Street Robbery Prevention
Take Responsibility for Your Personal Safety
 Stay in well-lit areas.
 Walk near the curb — away from shrubbery and places where someone could be hiding / Walk
against traffic, so that cars cannot surprise you from behind.
 Keep an arm’s length away from strangers.
 If you think someone suspicious is approaching or following you, cross to the other side of the
street and head for the nearest public place.
At Night, Avoid Public Parks, Vacant Lots, Alleys and Areas with Excessive Trees and Bushes
 Know which stores and other public places are open along your route.
 Look for anyone "hanging around" your car or your path to your car.
 Have your keys in your hand and be ready to open the car door.
Street Robbery: Dos and Don'ts
 Never wrap a purse strap around your wrist; forcible removal could result in serious injury.
 Keeping cash in a separate money clip or pouch will allow you to hand it over without sacrificing
your credit cards, identification, and personal papers.
 Obey the robber's instructions.
 Make a mental note of the robber's appearance, i.e., height, weight, hair color/style, clothing,
etc.
 If possible, take down the vehicle license plate number, a description of the vehicle, and the
direction the robber is fleeing.
 Then call 9-1-1 immediately!
Robbers are looking for CRAVED items:

6th Division Highlighted Officer of the Week
Detectives Lott and Dewitt have been serving our community since 06-29-2009. Both Officers are
assigned to the Detectives office of the 6th Division. They received a nomination for Officer of the Month
in October. Below is a portion of the letter they received for their efforts.
On 10-07-14 at approximately 2015 hours 6th Division Detectives were on an unrelated traffic stop near
Poplar Level and I-264 when they were flagged down by a passerby about an injured toddler in their
vehicle. As Detective Lott went to investigate further the mother of the toddler tried to advise him her
toddler had severe lacerations on his head, shoulder and hand but she spoke little English and a clear
language barrier existed. The toddler was wrapped in a towel and the bleeding was not controlled. It
was later learned a large aquarium had fallen on the child, which caused the severe lacerations.
Detectives knew they had to act quickly and the nearest ambulance was coming from downtown.
Detectives made the decision to transport the toddler to Kosair Hospital in their police vehicle due to
the severity of the injuries and provide the toddler with the best chance of survival. While en route Det.
Lott maintained constant pressure on the wounds while Det. Dewitt drove the vehicle and within
minutes detectives arrived at Kosair Hospital where staff were made aware and were there waiting to
treat the child. Hospital staff advised the toddler lost a lot of blood due to cuts on his head, arm and
hand but is expected to survive.
Detectives Lott and Dewitt have been recommended for the Distinguished Life Saving Award.
