An acoustic piano with a volume control, or a digital piano with strings?
Yamaha’s latest development stretches the imagination and opens up a whole
new world of possibilities.
TransAcoustic is the name we have given to the technology that will power a new breed
of piano. At its most basic level, it turns the soundboard into a “loudspeaker”. This
means that any sound can be delivered through this naturally resonant piano component.
But there’s much more to TransAcoustic technology. Using a mechanism similar to that
of the well-proven Silent Series, it is possible to prevent the hammers from striking the
strings and, instead, to play back digital samples. Unlike the Silent instruments,
however, there is no need for headphones or external amplification. The sound is
played back though the soundboard. You can control the volume and select the sound
- from a sampled CFX concert grand, or a choice of electric pianos to a marimba and
harpsichord. And perhaps the most scintillating sounds are generated when you combine the acoustic and digital properties of the instrument - gentle orchestral strings
under a natural piano, for example. You can even play back pre-recorded accompaniment tracks as you perform. Because the instrument is a real, fully strung and resonant
piano, the natural, sympathetic vibrations of both the soundboard, case and, significantly, strings, add a completely new dimension to performance. The sampled sounds
come to life with a brilliant realism no other instrument has approached. Currently
TransAcoustic technology is still in its conceptual phase.

The Bösendorfer Beethoven model is launched in 2013 to celebrate the 14th International Beethoven Competition in Vienna and our 185th anniversary.
Beethoven composed all of his immortal masterpieces in Vienna, living there from 1792
to his death in 1827. Ignaz Bösendorfer started his piano factory in 1828 and his ideas
of sound were very much shaped by Vienna’s cultural environment that was profoundly
influenced by Beethoven. Many distinguished artists have chosen Bösendorfer pianos
for their performance of Beethoven’s works. The model is limited to the number of
sonatas (32) and features the use of mother of pearl elements. Thanks to the close
cooperation of Beethoven-Haus Bonn we have been able to silk screen onto the inside
of the grand piano lid the opening measures of the Presto Agitato from the original autograph of the “ M o o n l i g h t ” sonata. Available in size 200 and 214.

The Bösendorfer Hummingbirds model showcases the use of marquetry inlay – a very
skilled and time consuming process – and pays tribute to the exotic world of Empire
and fantasy epitomised by the ornamental Bergl murals in Schloss Schönbrunn in
Vienna that were commissioned by Empress Maria Theresa. The extraordinary three
dimensional effect is achieved by the use of the traditional sand shading technique on

A duet of tradition and technology
The most notable news on the YCL-450M is the introduction of the Duet+ technology
from our oboes.
The upper joint body is drilled out slightly larger around the bore and tone-holes. Thermoplastic ABS resin is injected into the cavity, instantly forming the inner shape.
It is designed to preserve as much as 90% of the wooden portion, while its natural
appearance is hardly distinguishable from conventional allwooden models.
Due to this kind of bore treatment this clarinet has a lighter resistance and an open
sound with a mild timbre while also protecting and stabilising the inner surface of the
upper joint.
The new adjustable thumb-rest with strap ring makes it much more comfortable to hold
the instrument.

The YCR-8620S Eb-Cornet has a one-piece bell design with a thinner shape and modified taper allowing the sound to resonate and project very freely. The curved leadpipe
with sleeve and redesigned bell braces provide the instrument with a balanced amount
of resistance which helps this instrument to perfectly complement the new Neo Bb
cornet, without the need to make any changes to its design. To bring it firmly into the
Neo family, the YCR-8620 has now been updated with ‘Neo’ engraving on the bell and
a new ‘Neo’ branded single case.
