This was the big one for our club. The 24th annual F-100 Western
nationals has a rich history on the west coast as one of the premier events of it’s type. Where else can you gather so many Ford
trucks that your senses go on overload?
Bill Lee was the event chairman and once again out did himself.
Our group started early, in fact the night before. Tables were unloaded, raffle prizes were sorted, all before the mandatory movie
night compete with munchies, drinks and of course, cherries. The
good thing about those cherries is that they seem to keep the
mosquitoes away!
Saturday morning came much faster than most of us wanted.
Dusty and Jim took up their post at the gate to begin the registration process, then the trucks began to roll in. Carlos, Ed, Jeff,
Rich and a few others did a great job helping me to park everybody in an orderly fashion; Titan Graphics took some photos of
each truck as they arrived; Larry and Maryanne had the help of Gib and Marsha with
the raffle; DJ Dan made sure that The Music
Played On, and everybody else that I may not
have mentioned worked their fanny off to be
sure that all attendees felt welcomed and that
everything ran smoothly. And it did.
It was plenty warm for the event but the park
trees made for lots of comfortable shade. In
fact, it was difficult to find
enough sun to get a tan.
The club supplied bottled
water to keep everybody
hydrated throughout the
day.

The Pres Says...
by Jeff Hornsby - President
Wow is all I can say about the 24th annual Western Nationals. It
was the best yet. The members of Orange Count Pickups Limited,
all pulled together to put on an outstanding event. It was great how
the club became a well oiled machine from parking to the trophy
presentation and everything in between. I hope someone got a picture of the water wagon. That cold water was appreciated by everyone. As most of you know June 23 is the date for next year so
mark your calendar. Many new things are going to help make the
25th edition of the Western Nationals bigger and more enjoyable
than ever.
After the Western Nationals, some of us went to John Force’s Race
Station for his monthly cruise night and Rich Miller, Ron Smith and
Dale Hadfield all walked away with a trophy. It goes without saying
that after all of that, I was ready to relax so Deb and I went back to
our cabin at Canyon R.V. Park. No TV or phone (well I did have my
cell phone) and went home the next day. Speaking of the R.V. Park
if you want a R.V. space or cabin for next year you need to call them
soon as these go fast.
The July meeting at Zito’s Pizza was not what I had planned being
noisy with no privacy, so for August we tested Main Street Pizza
in Garden Grove (right where the Friday night cruise is). The food
was good but our allotted space on the patio was a bit cramped.
They do have a large building so maybe that is the answer. Since
the club is growing so fast, it seems like once a new meeting place
is found it is already too small, but we must endeavor to persevere - what movie is that from? Trust me, Pickups Limited will find a good home (sounds like I am running for office).
At the last meeting there was a little going away party for Bill and Bonnie Lee. We had cake and gifts for them
and their new home in Utah. We are going to miss both of them but Bill assured us he won’t be a stranger. It’s
hard to put into words how much this club and the F-100 community owe to Bill. Thank you from all of us
The Club outing for July was the monthly John Force Cruise Night. I was running late because of slow play at the
golf course. The members waited for me at McDonald’s but that meant that they gave away the space that was
saved for us and we had to park in the back but we were in good company. It was the biggest turn out this year
and there were seven trucks from the Orange County Chapter, one from Pomona and one non-member but at
least he brought “The Cherry’s” and also won best of show. Way to go Walt…they tried to give it to Rich but he
won last month.
I spent a little time with Ed working on his to do list for the North/South Run in Santa Maria. He can check one off
the list. Wait till you see that new shifter! My truck is getting the front end rebuilt as I write this and we are planning our trip to the North/South Run. We can’t wait to get going.
The membership is growing every month as we voted in a new member each of the last two meetings. Be sure
to greet any one that is new when you see them. It goes a long way if we make new people feel welcomed. You
can greet the old members too.
That’s about it for now I have to email this to Chris.

Mad, Mad World…..Cured with Good Friends
by Ed Oe - Vice President
We all work hard, to enjoy the
good things in life. Since joining
PUL I have met many people
who do just that. Some have
already made their mark and
are enjoying their retirement
years trucking a long. Many
are like me who continue to
work hard each day, trying to
do all the right things, enjoying
every minute with our families
and hobby.
Finding that balance is hard
with the demands in our days
and I find myself talking to
many of my F-100 family during the day, which takes the
stress off. I have found a very
talented group of guys among
PUL who are always willing to
help when a problem arises.
It’s been a pleasure and learning experience getting to know
everyone.
The Super Tour was one of my
best life experiences! In fact,
Steve and Autumn from Ohio will be traveling in their F-100 to Santa Maria to capture that experience again.
Anthony is taking the trip from New York City in his ‘55 panel. I’ll get a chance to DRIVE my 56 to the show and
hang with my extended family. It’s all good!

Our Western Nationals for 2006 was sponsored by Blue Oval
Truck Parts. Larry was on hand to work with the vendors and to
award a few special pick awards to some high quality rides. This
event is opened to all Ford trucks so there was just everything
from late model Lightnings to the classic “T” Bucket to flat beds to
the classic panels and even a few ‘Rat Rod” style trucks. Yes there
was something for everybody and it was all good.
As the day progressed and the great music from DJ Dan played
on, Dale and his son were quite busy roaming around the crowd
doing interviews and making recordings of the day. Dale is currently busy editing hours of video to create a first class memory for
us to enjoy. You can find information on purchasing this video on
the Pickups Limited, Orange County web site at http://www.pickupslimited.com/Links/Main/Recent/WN06/WnVideo.html The cost
for this video will be $12 plus shipping so get yours today.

Several special interest trucks attended our event this
year. Gib’s son arranged to bring out a cherry ‘56 big
window named Moonstruck which was owned by Cher
and Rob from no limit trailered the F-100 Supernationals truck for everybody to drool over that had not already done so during the Super Tour 4.
There were a ton of awards to go along with a nice
raffle and 50/50 drawing. Blue Oval had some special
awards that Larry himself picked and the remaining
of the awards were voted on by a committee of members. All tabulation was controlled by the unflappable
Bill Beverley who kept everything above board. After
the dust had settled, Bill DeGaine walked away with
the Ultimate Truck award. Bill Lee then took special
photos of each winning truck which was placed into
the award plaque for a first class keepsake.
Planning is already in the works for the 2007 event
which will be held again at Featherly Park on June 23,
2007. With Bill Lee now in Utah, there will be some
new things in the works with as much of the tradition
as possible retained. It’s hard to replace someone like
Bill and to top the job that he has done over the years,
but at least he is only a phone call away and willing to
stay involved. Remember that Orange County does
reach all the way into Utah! Plans call for a special
celebration for this 25th anniversary event which will
make it bigger and better than ever.

Donut Derilicts...
AKA “The Donut Shop”
...a unique collection of gear heads and run what you brung vehicles
by Chris Travers
One of the great things about our group is how spontaneous we have become. A quick phone call or web posting can
produce a group of 8 to 15 F-100’s and their supporting cast.
Just ask Ed, Jeff, Chris, Dale, Ron, Gib, Dusty and Carl what
goes on.
Adams Avenue Donuts serves up some of the best “gut
bombs” anywhere, but what makes this establishment world
famous is not the donuts, but the cars that they attract and
have done so vor over 30 years. On any given Saturday morning you will find as many as 200 cars, trucks motorcycles and
who knows what, arriving as early as 5:00am, just to spend
a few hours with their buddies bench racing. That’s right, 5:
ooam, the butt crack of dawn!
One of the nice things especially for us early risers is the fact
that everything is over by 8:00am or so which gets everybody
home in time for those “honey do’s” that seem to appear every weekend.
Oh and one more thing...don’t be late or else you may just be
the one who has to buy for everybody.

John Force Race Station...
by Ed Oe
Our club cruise event for july was
the monthly event at the John Force
Race Station. It was Saturday the
29th and we started out meeting at
the near by McDonalds at 4:00pm
so we could enter the Race Station Cruise Night together. We had
8 trucks as we made our entrance
into the front gate. All eyes were on
us as we rolled past everyone.
The O.C. Mustang club was hosting the night with PUL member Rich
Miller waving us in. Rich is the VP of the Mustang
club and had his hot California Special on display,
along with his Bad Ass 56!
With all trucks parked, doors and hoods open we
set up our chairs and marked our spot. Talk quickly
when to the North / South run on the 17th of August. Plans were made for caravans with groups
for the cruise to Santa Maria. Walt Pocock passed
the cherries and everyone settled into an awesome bench racing
session with each other.
Raffle time came fast and the chairs were moved to the raffle area.
We had our ticket stubs out as they called off the numbers. Carl
and Pam won a car cleaning set with Dee Pocock winning a signed
John Force connecting rod. The best part was seeing Walt accept
his award for “Best of Show”.

Rollin’ for the Kids at the Fender Center
By the editors of TEN magazines
When it comes to educating kids on music, we think no one does it better than the Fender Center For The
Performing Arts. The center offers free music lessons to local children who are interested in playing the guitar,
drums, bass, keyboard and other instruments with a talented staff of musicians and teachers. The center operates purely off of donations and one of the fund-raising events is the Rollin’ 4 The Kids Show.
The show attracts many Southern California vehicles to help raise money for the center and many of the participants were members of the California Chapters of DodgeTruckWorld.com, FordTruckWorld.com and ClassicTruckWorld.com websites. These members showed up with their vehicles prepped and ready for display. But
more importantly, they were willing to donate their time and money for music education.
Among the members of the TEN network of websites, there were also club members from the Southern California chapter of Pickups Limited and No Sympathy. The variety of these vehicles, as well as other vehicles that
attended the show was quite impressive. Vehicles from Classic Hot Rods to muscle cars and even a dropped
Chrysler 300 C were in attendance, along with lifted and lowered trucks that made up a majority of the vehicles
in attendance.
The show was sponsored by Lucas Oil, The Enthusiast Network, and Mequires but a host of other vendors willing
to contribute to the cause were also in attendance. Along with participating in the show, both vendors and vehicle
participants were able to walk through the Fender Center museum, where the rich history of the Fender guitar
can be seen and appreciated.
Although the museum is a great attraction in itself, the music played a large part of the overall success of the
show. One would imagine that a show put on by an organization associated with Fender would have great bands.
The fact was, that the bands that played during the show were fantastic, but the most impressive was band put
together by the students of the center. The group was called Half Stack and the six member group of kids rocked
to a multitude of Eagle and Steve Miller tunes and more that highlighted the show.
By the end of the day, there were 20 awards given out to the vehicle participants who entered their vehicles to be
judged. This, along with a multitude of door prizes that included such items as music CDs, a Fender guitar and
even a set of custom wheels. The Rolling 4 The Kids show is still in its infancy but the popularity of the event is
growing far beyond the capacity of the Fender Center parking lot. Next year, the center’s director of operations
Debbie Rodriquez says that they hope to expand the show to accommodate a larger amount of vehicles and
vendors that have shown interest in attending the show again.

Annual Braille Rally...
July 8th
by Chris Travers
As hopelessly certified car geeks, we all enjoy it when the sound our cool ride
turns a head and the head nod that follows, but what if that visual contact was
missing. Yes it is hard to imagine, but that is exactly the reality of the Braille
Rally. This is an event that pairs the cool vehicle and it’s owner with an energetic
teenager that happens to be blind. Your partner is also your navigator during this
genuine road rally that had us wandering from Hollywood down through the beach
cities of Orange County. Since this was a genuine rally event, all of the sports car
types arrived with their Corvettes, Ferraris, Deloreans and MGs all with timing
equipment while the old F-100 guy forgot his watch and was using his cell phone
as the only timer. Oh yes, my partner did have her braille watch that was a big
help. The end result was a massive burn out at the starting line, a spot on the 10
o’clock news AND an overall first place! I guess that turned a few heads.
Good Shepherd Car Show...
July 15th
by Chris Travers
Remember how hot is was in mid July? Yes it was 100°+
but not too hot for a good car show. The annual Good
Shepherd car show in Downey was is always more than
just another show that is not only top quality, but one of
those down home type of events that we all wish for.
Tons was tons of food, a large raffle, great t-shirts, a big
50/50 and generous trophies to make this a memorable
event. This year F-100 owner Rodger Young walked
away with top honors in the custom category for his blue
chop top / slant cab. I guess that will show those Chevy
guys now won’t it!

Spray Can Alley...
by Larry Lopez - Safety Chairman
Well if you haven’t been out lately,
you didn’t experience the heat wave
we had a few weeks ago. It was real
hot in the So Cal area, so hot that
I had no interest in working on the
truck. It did inspire me to start installing the Vintage Air A/C kit I got
back in April. It just needed to get
hot enough to get me going, not to
mention the wife chewing at my ear.
Before I could install the kit I found
that I had some surface rust under
the dash. Using a Scotch Brite®
pad, I was able to remove all of the
big rust flakes. I then sprayed some
Rust-Oleum® primer and paint afterwards.
The kit that I got was a complete kit.
It even came with a generic compressor bracket. The instructions
start with installing condenser first
but I opted to install the evaporator unit in first. Taking the advise of
Chris and Steve, I started by shortening the passenger side defrost
duct about 1”. I needed to modify the
driver side duct because its shape
and the direction the hose connection pointed. After taking it over to
a steel pole, I reshaped the duct so
that the top matched the dash outlet
and the connection points towards
the passenger side making things
much better.
Mounting the evaporator proved to
be a little challenge. I didn’t have
anyone to hold it as I positioned it
under the dash. The supplied brackets seem to do the job, I didn’t want
to drill any additional holes so taking the advice of others, I used one
of the mounting holes that will hold
the plastic outlet that the A.C. lines
and heater hose exit the body thru.
Once I’m happy with its position,
then I can move on to make hose
connection that lead from the cab.
12
www.pickupslimited.com
That’s as far as I’ve gotten so far;
not much but it’s a start. In the next
issue, I hope to have a few more
pictures and a complete article on
the installation of the kit.
A while back some of you might have
read a little about LED tail lights that
are becoming more popular. At the
last Long Beach swap meet, I came
across some LED tail lites for our
trucks. I was a little surprised at
how cheap they are, but that might
be because there made in China
or some third world country. The
complete lens assembly is only $28
each. The installation is straight forward, you start by removing your
old lens and bulb, then connect the
LED bulb lead into the socket, bolt
the lens into place and you’re done.
They really stand out during the day
and especially at night. One extra
note is that you may need a low resistance (no load) signal flasher to
make the LED lights work properly.
You can find these at NAPA Auto
Parts or other quality parts houses
By the time you read this, the North/
South Run will be happening. I know
that many of you will be driving your
trucks and I’ve seen check lists being developed to help with all the
necessary items, and you wouldn’t
want to forget your favorite shirt. As
those that went to the F-100 Super
Nationals back east got to experience, hidden problems tend to pop
up when you least expect. Things
like a transmission overheating
and fuel systems that vapor lock,
plagued a few trucks, so take the
time to check your truck thoroughly.
Be sure that your hoses and lines
are routed correctly and away from
heat generating items like heater
and radiator hoses, exhaust and
your A.C. compressor. All of these
items generate their own heat and
you don’t need that added to the
temperature of your fuel or other
fluids.
Make sure those you fluids are
at the proper level. If you haven’t
changed the oil or coolant in the last
year, now would be a good time to
do it. I hope everyone has a wonderful and safe trip and keep the
rubber side down!
Larry

Are your lights this bright?
Editors Ramblings...
This column is always the last item to go into the newsletter. I like to get the feel of the various stories and
events over the previous two months and enjoy seeing what the other guys have to add to this newsletter.
It’s always refreshing to see what my other contributors have to write about and I think we all enjoy seeing
what the camera lens has captured too. There is a constant is what we do and that is trucks...heck, it’s not
just trucks is all things motorized...scratch that to now read all things mechanical that include wheels. Let’s
face it, we are all hopeless gear heads that can’t resist not only a great looking car or truck, but the strange
and obscure also. You can’t tell me that the thought of watching carpolcalypse hasn’t crossed your mind can
you? You know, that program on the SPIKE Network that features southern Destruction Derby drivers racing
with refrigerators and stoves on top of their “vehicles” while towing a boat. Now that’s racing! maybe not but
is sure is fun.
Other parts of the country would call this the peak of the “outdoor” show season but to us this is the essence
of life itself. We are lucky that we can choose from events on almost a daily basis. From the mega shows that
have upwards of 3,000 vehicles to our favorite Saturday Donut Shop cruise, we are truly in the hot
bed of street rod activity and we can see it all. Look for the Pickups Limited “Official Event” icon in the
event guide so you can see which event we will attend that mongh as a club.
Through my travels as a Marketing Director for a major bicycle component manufacturer I always seem to
come across some of the more interesting and unique vehicles you could imagine. The thing that I always
say to myself is that ‘someone did this on purpose’. Here are a few “special” shots from my collection. Some
of you may have seen a few of these shots
before, but they are among my favorites
so enjoy and ask yourself, am I really that
hopeless?

DUSTY’s Corner...
by Dusty Peetoom
Well, the Western Nationals have come and gone and I was very impressed with the later-truck turnout. There
were some almost stock and some that were in no way stock. With great paint, upholstery, bed covers, and
engine dress ups everywhere, it made me wonder
what ever could cause some one to do that to one
truck. All I could really think of was good job everybody! The run seemed to come off smoothly with
Bill Degane getting Top Truck and Barb Baxter getting four best of awards. It’s funny how the voting
process made it come out that way, but all in all,
things did work out for the best. The Western Nationals staffing was great! The raffle went off with
out a hitch and I would like to point out that none
other than our editor Gunga Din, handled the life
saving water chores. That was a last minute addition and well received. Atta boy Chris!
The last meeting at the Zieto’s Pizza place was also
the sendoff for Bill and Bonnie Lee to Utah. I am
very sorry to see them go. Having Bill out there in
Corona was like a safety net for a great many people and I’m way up at the top of that list. Bill, everyone will miss you much more than they can say.
At the end of Bill Lee’s presidency Jeff and Ed stepped in and started a run on new members and the momentum
just kept going. We are in an almost unstoppable upswing and I think we have to try to get as many of these new
playmates as possible. A few of the late model guys have expressed an interest in coming in and I am totally
in favor of that. Remember when the Good Guys went with pre 1948 only? It didn’t last tool long and rightly so.
Limitations are limits. Get up some Saturday morning, get a donut and look around. It’s a variety out there and
that’s a good thing. I’d like to see our club to include all the like minded people. We can get together and do all the
dumb stuff that makes life worth going through. Going places and doing things is what this is all about. We should
be doing things outside the box. Any one can pay twenty to fifty bucks to park and sit in a folding chair. Heck I
can park at home for free and I’ll have goodies in the fridge! We should try to see where the old speed shops are
and maybe go to the races at Ventura or Paris. Racing is done in the dirt! Drag racing is done on pavement and
Driving in circles on pavement is the result of being lost.
We could try for a tour at Edelbrock if we could get enough bodies or new members, OK I’ll stop beating that
drum. There are engine shops upholstery shops plating and paint shops. How about getting in with Meguiars or
Mothers and have a real demonstration on how to really take care of paint and what to do about problems. There
are a lot of businesses out there that pay a good portion of their profits for advertising and we are the target audience and we want to see what they have.
What could be better!
