Thank you Madame Speaker
The Kiwanis Club of Brandon received its Charter from Kiwanis
International on February 7, 1919 and was only the second club
formed in Manitoba. The bond of fellowship is cemented by the
fundraisers used to support a variety of community service projects.

For example, in 1919 the Kiwanis Club of Brandon built the largest
cash register in the world, mounted it on a truck, and collected funds
for the Kiwanis Thrift Stamp and War Savings Stamp drive. For many
years the club sold baskets of apples, followed by cans of peanuts
door-to-door to raise funds. It was a special time, when you knew
your neighbour and your neighbour was expecting you.
This past Saturday on Rideau Street in Brandon East, one could
witness their favorite young driver, aged 8 to 14, race their home
made kar down the hilly street. This particular fund raiser started in
1986 has grown to be a special event for children, parents and
grandparents. Kar Kits are purchased by supporting Businesses or
individuals and includes first year registration for one child. Trophies
are presented to the winners and runners up in each age group and
are awarded for the Best Design, Most Original and Best decorated.
It is a fun filled day where you can visit the Kiwanis Kitchen to enjoy a
Hot Dog, a Smoky, a cold drinks and other tasty goodies.
Madame Speaker, funds raised from this event are used to support
community projects such as the Learn not to burn fire safety program
in conjunction with the Brandon Fire Dept., support for the School
division food for thought program, support for the Helping hands
soup kitchen, the Westman Kiwanis Court and many more. Kiwanis
newest Centennial Project, in progress, is the design and build of a
new family picnic, wedding and event pavilion for Rideau Park.

Dear Len,
At today's meeting of the Kiwanis Club of Brandon, member Keith Scott
gave a short presentation about his experience at the Manitoba
Legislature. He also read a portion of your "Kiwanis Club Members
Statement" of June 7, 2016, and presented us with the Commemorative
Document that you provided. We will scan and publish this document in
full in an upcoming Kiwanis Bulletin which will be sent to all members and
supporters. Keith was quite overwhelmed by the experience, and in
particular the standing ovation from the legislature after you introduced the
members of Kiwanis who were present.
On behalf of all Kiwanis members, we thank you from the bottom of our
hearts for recognizing our activities in this manner. Certainly, in my time
with Kiwanis, this is the most wonderful recognition that anyone has given
to our club and activities. It is with renewed spirit and vigor that we press
forward in our humble attempts to serve our community better.
With your permission, I would like to ask our Club to consider making you
an Honorary Member of the Kiwanis Club of Brandon.
With our deepest appreciation,
Hamid Mumin
President
Kiwanis Club of Brandon
Please note Len has accepted the this offer

Today’s Speaker
Our Speaker today was Jim McCrae who generously volunteered to
step in on very short notice. Jim among other endeavors in his life
was MLA for Brandon West for a number of terms reaching the rank
of Justus Minister with the Gary Fillman Government. Since his leaving
Government he was a Real-estate person for a few years and was
eventually appointed to a three year term as “Immigration Judge”
and that is what he spoke on today.
He had a few great stories to relate to us about the very satisfying
experience as Immigration Judge.
Thanks Jim for sharing those experiences and speaking on short
notice with your Kiwanian Friends.
Vern Gilbertson, Jim McCrae and Rob Holland
