MANY GOOD TURNS
CHAPTER OF THE AMERICAN ASSOCIATION OF WOODTURNERS
SUMMER ACTIVITIESAND NEWS BRIEFS...
Message From President Paul Courtright:
As we approach the halfway point of the summer, we
have had a good first half which began with the AAW
symposium and included the open shop and the tree identification. There are still a lot of activities to come.
The State Fair demonstration is right around the corner.
The dates are August 1,2 &3. If you are interested please
see/contact Bruce Kerns very soon. The open spots to be
a demonstrator are filling up. If you have not demonstrated before at the fair, it is a great opportunity to just make
wood chips and then go see the fair ( why not make a day
out of?) If you don’t feel comfortable demoing you can
always be the spokesperson for the club.
Just after the fair, our rent will be due at the church. So
please make a few bowls or whatever you feel the urge to
make, to give/donate to the church for their auction that
will be held on August 7,8 & 9. Please get the items to
Mike Truco, Wood craft or Wood Werks by August 1.
This is our way of showing our thanks to Holy Spirit Church for giving us a great place to hold our meetings.
Feel free to make more than two pieces (the more the merrier).
The last activity for the summer will be the Paul Bunyan show near Cambridge, Ohio, to be held on October
3,4 &5. Our club will be doing demonstrations once again this year. If you have not demonstrated or attended
the Paul Bunyan show, it is must see show to attend. While you at the Paul Bunyan show, why not spend some
time showing off your skills. To be a part of the show please contact Freddie Dutton and he will put you on the
list to be a demonstrator. There will be more information to come as we get closer to the date.
Don’t forget that we will be starting our regular monthly meetings in September. We are finalizing the schedule
for the year and it is packed with lots of fun. So finish that piece you have been working on over the summer
and bring it to our first meeting for show & tell. I will say that it looks like we have quite the program line up.
If you have any question please contact one of your officers.

Central Ohio Woodturners Shine Again at The Ohio State Fair by Bruce Kerns
The Central Ohio Wood turners were at the Ohio State Fair again this year, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, August 1st, 2nd, and 3rd, demonstrating their amazing feats of wood artistry for the crowd. Many of the onlookers
were truly awestruck as they watched a piece of raw tree, with bark, transform before their eyes into a bowl or a
cowboy hat. Others, kids and adults alike, were mystified as a piece of raw lumber became a colorful, spinning
toy shooting across the floor. Both the demonstrators and the crowd had fun and that always makes the venture
worthwhile. Items made included spin tops, bowls, pens, goblets, hats, etc. and one unfortunate Christmas tree
which broke and fell to the floor only to be stepped on (that was mine). Demonstrators included Mike Trucco,
Bob Pfister, Robin Moro, Walt Betley, Floyd Anstaett, Max Kackstetter, Paul Courtright, Dennis DeVendra, Bill
Ramsey, Nancy Kerns, and me. Thanks to Mike Trucco who transported the equipment to and from the fair and
set the equipment in place. Also thanks to those who cleaned up the “circus” Sunday evening; I don’t believe
we have ever gotten torn down and left an event as quickly. Photos of the participants were provided by my
wife Nancy who turned a “snow woman” for the first time. With the new policy that you don’t have to be an
AAW member to demonstrate, everyone should look at volunteering to show off their skills. Believe me, most
of the people are amazed at just the shavings coming off the wood, so there is no pressure to produce a beautiful
finished piece. The real fun is talking with the people and answering their questions about woodturning and the
club and promoting both, when you aren’t making tops for the kids. We demonstrated in the DiSalle Creative
Arts Bldg. where items from across the state which were entered in the creative arts categories, including woodturning, were displayed. Some were from our own club members. Put it on your calendar for next year to enter
and volunteer so you don’t miss out.

Redemption at The Holy Spirit Church An Overwhelming Success
All of your gifts to Holy Spirit have been delivered. Our best count is that approximately 42 members gave 91
items for the silent auction (plus a few who didn't leave their names). This note is a big Thank you to all those
who responded to our emails and phone reminders. Our best response ever, tells Holy Spirit how grateful we
are for their generous hospitality. Best of all, they are really pleased with our contributions. The Holy Spirit
Festival ran from Friday through Sunday last week. The Festival hosted a silent auction of COW member donated crafts. The auction raised a healthy sum of money and the woodturners are happy to have made a significant donation as gratitude for the church's services towards the club. Again, a heartfelt Thank You to all who
gave; we really appreciate your generosity. (Pictures courtesy of Teri Rockwell Khan)

Tree Identification Nature Walk and COW Club Picnic:
COW club Tree Identification talk/walk at Blendon Woods Metro Park on July 12 was led by Kathy Smith, a
Forester at OSU. Kathy knew her subject well and helped identify over 30 tree species using leaf patterns and
arrangements on twigs. Her presentation was well received by 25 members and their families in attendance.
Following which a pot-luck lunch and games capped a refreshing day at the park in the presence of host turkeys. Our sincere thanks to Kathy Smith for educating the membership on native and invasive species.

The Arromont Experience - (with the oldest recorded student)
By Walt Betley and Bob Pfister
Advanced pen making: Barry Gross
We arrived on Sunday afternoon and went immediately to the registration desk. We were greeted by friendly
employees who helped us locate our living quarters. For those of you who have never been to Arromont , it is
an art and craft school which is located in Gatlinburg Tennessee. The school sits on the side of a mountain and
is in a very rural appearing location. Walt and my living quarters were in a fairly large dormitory up the hill.
We had two rooms and a bathroom which we shared. The space was clean and roomy, not fancy but more than
adequate. Meals were served in a cafeteria style as a buffet. There were no special seating arrangements so one
could enjoy meeting many new people.
After dinner on Sunday we went to the shop where we met with the shop teacher, Barry Gross and the other 13
folks who were there to take the course. The class was made up of people from New Zealand, California, Illinois, Texas, Ohio and Pennsylvania. Walt was introduced to the entire school as the oldest (93) student they
have ever had.
The shop was beautiful and well-equipped. Each student had his own lathe and we were issued a bag full of
supplies for the future work that was to be done. We started right away preparing to make an imbedded acrylic
resin pen of our own choice. During the following week we made a variety of very interesting and difficult to
make pens. These will be on display during our first fall meeting.
Each day breakfast was at 7:30 in the morning, lunch at noon, and dinner at 6 PM. The shop was open at 8 AM
until 10 PM and we had free use of all the facilities. There was usually a meeting of the whole school at 7 PM
to review what was going on. Walter and I generally worked until 9:30 PM, drove back up the hill and collapsed. We both had a wonderful community and learning experience.
We should mention that a number of club (COW) members have attended the Arromont School in previous
years. Walt Betley, Jim Burrowes and Barbra Crockett took a specialized two week “off center turning “ course
with J.F. Escoulen.
Don't miss the first club meeting of the season on September 9, 2014. Max Kackstetter is leading the
first club meeting this fall. He will talk about how to cut a log to get the grain pattern you want in a
bowl.
