terms. The LAF serves its mission through advocacy,
public health, and research.
Levine Cancer Institute
The Levine Cancer Institute is changing the course of
cancer care by removing the barriers that separate patients from access to world- class research, breakthrough
treatments and quality care. Their cancer network consists of 13 cancer care locations across the Carolinas.
24 Hours of Booty funds the Genetics, Survivorship and
Wellness Program.
Levine Children’s Hospital
Levine Children’s Hospital is the most comprehensive
children’s hospital between Atlanta and Washington, DC,
helping children receive high-quality care close to home
and family, no matter their medical needs. The facility
treats more pediatric patients per day than any other hospital in North Carolina.
IU Simon Cancer Center
Located in Indianapolis, the IU Simon Cancer Center’s
mission is to advance the understanding, prevention and
treatment of cancer throughout Indiana and the world
with patient-centered care, acceleration of promising
science and collaborative educational programs.
The Ulman Cancer Fund for Young Adults (UCF)
The UCF was established in 1997 by Doug Ulman, a
three–time cancer survivor who now serves as President
and CEO of the Lance Armstrong Foundation. The UCF’s
mission is to support, educate, and connect young adults
affected by cancer.
THE EVENT
24 Hours of Booty is the
premier organization for
integrating community cancer fundraising and cycling
to engage communities in
support of cancer survivorship and navigation programs.
Originally founded in 2002
in Charlotte, North Carolina,
24 Hours of Booty has raised
more than $15 million dollars
to support local and national
cancer-fighting programs.
Now held on Booty Loops in
major cities across the United States, 24 Hours of Booty
hosts cyclists from around the
country as they ride in honor and support of the cancer
community.
The goal of each 24 Hours
of Booty is to provide an extraordinary event that is safe,
fun, and open to all levels of
cycling ability, while bringing
cancer awareness to the community, and raising funds for
noteworthy cancer charities.
Participants can ride as far
as their inspiration takes
them, in teams or solo. Riders
can cover three miles to 300
miles or more. Because the
course is situated on a two–
to three–mile loop, cyclists are
never far from the finish line.
The event features round–
the–clock road closure with
police support, fully–catered
meals and beverages, free
camping, free bike support,
great fundraising awards, and
many free products and samples. The fun and energizing
atmosphere is also perfect for
spectators, friends, families,
and supporters.

• Nearly 13.7 million Americans are currently living with, through or
beyond cancer.
• Cancer is the second most common cause of death in the US, exceeded
only by heart disease, accounting for nearly 1 of every 4 deaths.
• More than 1.6 million people in the U.S. (including 52,550 in North
Carolina; 26,390 in South Carolina; 30,680 in Maryland; 2,840 in D.C.;
and 35,560 in Indiana) will be diagnosed with cancer this year.
• Of adults diagnosed with cancer today, 67 percent will be living
five years from now.
• Nearly 1 in 2 men and 1 in 3 women will develop cancer during their lifetime.
• Three in four families will care for a family member with cancer.
• The National Institutes of Health (NIH) estimates that the overall costs
of cancer in 2009 were $216.6 billion.
• Cancer is expected to claim the lives of nearly 585,720 people in the U.S.
this year, including 18,980 lives in North Carolina; 9,950 lives in South Carolina; 10,500 lives in Maryland; 1,010 lives in D.C.; and 13,370 lives in Indiana.

• Today, cancer is the leading disease killer among 20- to 39-year olds. While
both younger and older patients are seeing improvements in survival rates,
the rates for young adults have improved far less, and the gap is worsening.
As a result of this lack of progress in survival improvement since 1975, young
adults diagnosed with cancer today have a worse prognosis than those
diagnosed 25 years ago.

A recent lung cancer diagnosis for a

(with my friend’s diagnosis) and it’s really
great for me to be able … to do something. I think that’s the appeal of becoming involved in events like this – you feel
like you’re making a difference.” After a

the BRCA 2 breast cancer gene. “The

strong and really alive,” she said. She
organized a Strides to Strength team for
the 24 Hours of Booty in July 2004, the
same year that Strides to Strength
became the first program in North
Carolina to receive recognition and funding from the Lance Armstrong
Foundation. “(The 24 Hours of Booty)
was everything I loved in one little package – cycling, the Lance Armstrong
Foundation, cancer awareness and fund
raising,” Weiss said. “Where else are you
going to find that?” She now serves as the
event’s executive director.
The ride has distinguished itself both
for its fund-raising efforts and prominence as a noncompetitive cycling event
that invites participation from experienced cyclists and dedicated individuals
who annually shake the dust from their
rust-lined Schwinns. “There’s a real community feeling that goes on within that little three-mile loop within that 24 hours,”
