PRESIDENT'S CORNER
H
ouston is a tough City and has proven once again that it can handle
whatever comes along. The recent historical rains inundated much of
our town, flooding cars, homes and businesses but not dampening the
spirit that makes this one of the best places to live.
Before the waters had begun to recede our neighbors were at work helping
those in need to minimize the damage and start the process of recovery.
Collection sites were set up and tons of food, clothing and other needed items
were donated. Businesses and individuals kicked in time and money to help
our fellow Houstonians. The differences in faith and politics were set aside as
we faced a common challenge. I am proud to be part of such a great City.
Our ASA Chapter is made up of these people; shop owners, technicians and
suppliers who help each other in good times and bad. It is the willingness to
give a hand up, to share and teach that makes this the best ASA Chapter in the
country.
The Chapter, with the help of our great Associate members has been able to
bring some very good meetings to the members lately and we have plans to
bring more. The May meeting will be hosted by Chastang Ford and feature a
Ford Power Stroke trainer. Also in May we will have a joint project with ASA
Texas to bring much needed training on network communications. We could all
use some help chasing down those U code problems.
If you have suggestions about what you would like to have as a topic of a
meeting please let us know.
Our efforts to work with the local Junior Colleges to recruit technicians is
showing progress and several shops have place applicants. We are collecting
more applications all the time and if you want access to find a new employee
for your shop contact Nancy.
In another article in this issue we talk about nominating the new board for the
2016-2017 ASA year. Please consider volunteering to keep the Chapter moving
ahead for all the membership.

APRIL MEETING RECAP
T
he April meeting was packed to hear Bob
Pattengale's presentation on common rail diesels.
Bob is the training manager for Bosch and came
prepared to share with the group many important rail
diesel tricks and traps.
Bob began by comparing diesel exhausts of today with
those of yesteryear. The black smoke that used to billow
from the pipes of many diesel powered vehicles has been
cleaned up by the use of particulate filters. The NOx has
been reduced to very low limits through the injection of
DFE fluid. Bob described it as a chemical treatment plant
behind any late model diesel. While he was on the DFE
subject, Bob cautioned that it was 67% water and should
never be mixed with diesel fuel.
For the first time OBDII data can be used to diagnose
diesel issues. Two very important PIDS named “FRPA
desired” and “FPRA actual” are very useful diagnostics
aids. Knowing the commanded fuel pressure verses the
delivered fuel pressure can help the technician diagnose
fuel delivery problems with nothing more than an OBD
capable scanner.

Through Bob's experience we
learned that the fuel rail pressure
sensor is rarely a cause of no start.
He explained that it would need to
be off by more than 40% to have a
significant impact. Instead of
attacking the pressure sensor, Bob
thought the pressure regulator was
a better place to start. He said there
was a screen that could be inspected for metal. If metal is
present, start looking for pump problems. Bob mentioned
that if you did need to replace a pump, they are timed, so
pay attention to the little marks.
Fuel quality and cleanliness was also discussed. Water and
debris are common rail enemies. The fuel tank should be
inspected for any pump related failures. There is an
excessive flow of diesel that returns back to the tank.
Sediment debris in return flow can quickly erode precision
machined components. Speaking of excessive flow,

One interesting point was the injector
code. Because no two injectors
perform the same, an injector profile
is created after a Bosch injector is
manufactured or rebuilt. Knowing
the profile, the engine computer can
make adjustments so they all fire the
same way. Any time an injector is
replaced or exchanged, the computer
needs to know.

ASA Houston is planning the next year's Board of Directors
Since the 1950's ASA has served the independent shops in Houston
helping them survive, and thrive through all of the changes to our
industry over those years. Now it is time for members to stand up
and help continue that great service to our industry.

carry on the work of the
association for the next year. That
election takes place in June. We
need volunteers to stand up and
help. The new President will be
Ford Rusk, of RMS Auto Care, but
we must also fill the vacancy for the
Secretary, Treasurer, President-Elect
and Shop Talk Editor. There are also
general board members who attend
our monthly board meetings, offer
advice, help carry out plans and vote
on the decisions necessary to move
forward. Here is what is required and
expected of a board member;
The Secretary will take notes at the
meetings, put them in a readable
form and email them to the board
before the next meeting. They could
be our webmaster too if they are
qualified and willing.
The Treasurer will enter the income
and expenditures into Quick Books
and print the P&L and Balance
Sheets for each board meeting
(someone else writes checks and
does tax reports). They also do the
annual billing for our associate
membership dues.
The President-Elect is the next
an outside event we will be part of.
All board members are expected to
attend as many board meetings and
regular meetings as possible, but we
understand that you also have
families and businesses to run.

Shop Talk each month.
A general board member attends
the board meetings and participates
in the decision making process of the
association. They may be asked to
volunteer to take on one area of
responsibility, such as Work Study or
A board meeting usually lasts about
an hour and half and they are held
the first Tuesday of each month
(except election days).
Many of the current board members
have been serving for a decade or
longer and it is time that fresh minds
and new ideas took the lead.
As a board member you will build
confidence, learn more about our
industry, meet people that you would
normally not get to interact with,
develop a strong network of shops
and owners to share ideas and
solutions with and help protect our
industry into the future. I strongly
encourage you to take the time to
investigate becoming a board
member, it is well worth the small
effort it takes.

ASA HOUSTON JOINS JOB FAIR AT HCC
A
pril 13 ASA Houston attended and participated in the annual job fair at Houston Community College. This was an
opportunity to introduce the young men and women enrolled in the Automotive Technology School to the
Automotive Service Association and talk with
them about the benefits of working for independent
shops.
It was estimated that about 100 students attended the
fair. ASA was able to speak with and get contact
information from 39 of these promising young techs.
We explained how to go to our website and complete
an application that would then be available to our
member shops. Our members can reach out to
prospects in their area.
The future of our industry depends on recruiting and
training qualified technicians. HCC has been great
about working with ASA, giving us access to the
students and encouraging them to speak with us.
Many of those we spoke with are near the end of their
college course and are ready to take their place in
shops as entry level techs or general service/lube techs.
Others are just starting their courses and will need to
find part time employment while they attend classes.
While these are young and inexperienced potential
employees, they are willing and very eager to learn,
having invested a lot of time in their education. They
are grateful for the opportunity to train with
professional techs in a real shop environment.
