PRESIDENT'S CORNER
J
uly's Meeting was a great meeting at Fratelli's. We were able to
accomplish a great deal of important ASA business while hearing from
an excellent speaker, Mark Sloan, on Harris County's emergency
management. John Miller, multiple time president of ASA, owner of
Freedom Automotive, and good friend to us all was honored by many
attendees. We had told John that we wouldn't lay the praise and
appreciation on too thick, but by the time we
brought out cake, John realized that we were not
going to allow our great friend and president to get
away quietly.
Dan Risley, our National President, addressed
appreciation for John's work and also spoke
enthusiastically about the organization on a
national level. For those who haven't met Dan he is
very forthright about national ASA business. Two
of the topics he brought up are NACE/CARS trade

show taking place August 9-13 in Anaheim, CA,
and of legislation being supported by ASA that
benefits the industry. Dan's presence along with the members of our local
chapter who affiliate with national will bring local and national closer for
the benefit of all involved. As a chapter we wish Dan well and look forward
to seeing him again when possible for him.
A new Board was sworn into office last meeting as customary every July. I
myself am very excited about what the new board can bring to the chapter
and therefrom the industry as a whole. We look to make what the chapter
has already accomplished more efficient and even more successful. As a
new board we look forward to bringing a broad and well balanced slate of
speakers and topics from technical to inspirational to business oriented so
that all members benefit from attending meetings.
The board looks forward to expanding and honing our outreach to HCC and
other technical schools for recruitment of the next generation of standard
bearers in our car repair industry. For this program I give special thanks to
Chuck Stasny, our new board's President Elect, and all who have stepped up
to help him by attending the Lunch & Learn with students. This program is
very successful in getting applicants. It is incumbent on our members to
hire these kids we have slated.
As we turn a new leaf with a new board I leave all members with this: it is
my priority as new President not to alter what has been built before me, but
to grow on what has been accomplished. Our board will make you proud to
be a part of ASA Houston.
Thank you all, and one last time, thank you John Miller for your 30 years of
leadership.

would have badly hurt our business. She has
also held every post in our local Chapter and
is currently a Regional Director for the State
association.
t the last ASA Houston meeting a
rather big fuss was made about
the years I have spent active in
ASA. I didn't think any special notice
should be paid to the small part I have
done over those years. Here's why.
I am not special in the length of time I
have spent working with ASA. Just in
our small chapter there are several who
have many more years than I in service
to our association. They include; Glenn
Young of Young's Automotive who has
spent close to 40 years in the group and
has held many local offices and has been
our State President, a State District
Representative and has participated in
several National efforts to help our industry. Betty Jo
Young, Glenn's wife and partner, has held every local
office, many State positions, including State President, and
has been on the National board. Chris Newhouse of Ray's
Auto Electric has been a member for more than 35 years
has held most of the local Chapter offices and has recruited
more members than anyone other than the Youngs for our
association. He has been one of the most influential voices
on our board for decades. Many others have more years of
service or membership including; Byron Rusk, RMS Auto
Care, Johnny Bang, Johnny's Bangs and Bumps, Ed Jones,
Jones Auto & Marine Service, Tony Montebano,
Montebano Tire and Auto, and Mike Kacal of Kacal's Auto
and Truck Service. There are more and forgive me if that
includes you and I didn't list you here.
It was said that some of the things I worked
on, with other members, were significant to
our industry. True enough, but I was not being
altruistic. I have a vested interest in protecting
and improving our industry. The projects I
was involved in were all aimed at improving
conditions for our businesses, mine included.
As a case in point; the efforts put into revising
the Franchise Tax have saved me over $7000
per years since the law was changed. That tax was cut in
half due primarily to the efforts of ASA Houston and State.
The savings pays more than 11 years of ASA dues each
year I remain in business.
Every member is a value to the organization, whether they
serve as an active board member, participate in industry
issue actions or just provide more “strength of numbers” to
help us influence the direction of our industry.
Singling me out as anything special among this flock of
Eagles is a compliment, but in error. There is nothing
special about me, or my efforts, when compared to that of
others.

hat have you done to
prepare for the next
natural disaster? If you are
like most Houstonians,
you probably have not
done anything, according
to Mark Sloan. Mark is
the Homeland Security &
Emergency Management
Coordinator for Harris
County.
last several years, it has been
evacuations due to flooding and
hurricane force winds. He shared that
many Houstonians felt they were safe
because they have lived here all
their life and never had a problem
with flooding. But, when 21
inches of rain fall in a 12 hour
period, flooding is inevitable.
One of Mark's frequently used
statements is “run from the water
and hide from the wind.” He
wanted us to be very cautious of
rising water and the storm surge. He
said more and more deaths are related
to driving into high water. In some
cases, drivers have moved barricades
to drive into very high water and
drowned because they lost all
electrical power and were locked in
the vehicle.

Harris County spans
across 1,777 square miles, with
population of 4.4 million people, and
a size larger than the state of Rhode
Island. Within the boundaries of
Harris County, there are 34 cities with
56 different fire departments and 120
different law enforcement agencies.
Needless to say, there is a lot to
coordinate during any declared
emergency. Mark reports to Judge Ed
Emmett, the county's chief executive
officer who is responsible for
mandatory evacuations across the
county.
Mark explained that in the past, most
of the natural disasters Harris County
had to endure were winter related snow and ice conditions - but for the

the need to be prepared. If you
assume one gallon of water per
person, per day, a family of four
would need over 20 gallons of water
for just 4 days (and that is for
drinking only). He also suggested
owning a map because you might not
have a working cell phone to use for
directions. As you are planning for
the next natural disaster, remember to
establish a contact outside the
Houston area. This becomes
important so that you have someone
you can contact to advise of your
situation, can relay your condition to
relatives, and can also be used by
friends and family living within
Houston trying to evacuate to find
each other. The reason most people
left after the last hurricane was
because there was no electricity, and
therefore no air conditioning.
Mark also mentioned the Harris
County app which delivers real time
weather alerts, hosts a step-by-step
guide to building a personalized
family disaster plan, offers survival
tip sheets, maps evacuation routes
and locates local emergency services.
The app is available in both English
and Spanish and is free. It can be
downloaded on iTunes and Google
Play as “ReadyHarris.” For more

Spring Auto Pros’ Key to Their Success
A
s a new business owner, I
can honestly say that
running a business takes a
lot of discipline. I have always had
an entrepreneur spirit and have
wondered since I was a small girl
how companies know what to do. I
am, of course, speaking about the
small companies, not those who
have a person for each facet of
operating; marketing director;
director of sales; parts managers;
HR and the list goes on. How does
one or maybe 2 individuals keep it
all together? How do they know
what to do next? How do they see
it from the outside?
Jeremy Owen and I, opened Spring
Auto Pros on March 15, 2015. We
had 1750 sq ft of space; 2 lifts; old
equipment and Jeremy's tools from
his 15+ years in the industry.
Forty-five days later we signed an
upgrade lease to almost 6000 sq ft,
which might I add, scared Jeremy
half to death. We have now, about
one year later, out grown that space
as well, although, we plan to make
it work for at least another 12-18
months. The one big question we
have been asked numerous times
from other small and new
businesses has been “how are you
doing it?”
It is not a secret; it's just not as well
understood as it should be by
business owners. The “it” I am
referring to is a business coach. I
will admit that the initial hiring of
our coach was incredibly scary due
to the financial investment and
commitment. I mean what were we
thinking? Some of our peers
cautioned us on not being able to
“measure” our results since we
were brand new, but my argument
was why would I hold myself back
from a year or more of growth
when I really need it rather than
struggle through it blind? A coach
is there to see what you cannot, or
know what you do not and guide
you. Why would I not want that
from the first day?
Our coach, David Smith, was also
carefully chosen. I wanted
someone who had worked with
larger companies but not someone
involved in an MLM or corporation
as the “mother” to their coaching. I
wanted someone who knew the
importance of customer service;
being paid on time; having a good
working relationship with others...
I wanted a small business owner.
Immediate Velocity was just that.
From the first initial visit I knew the
limits Jeremy and I put on ourselves
and the company had just dissolved
and the future was going to be an
incredible journey. The best way I
can describe the coaching to you
would be “He keeps the blinders on
us, just like you do on a horse at
work.” We are not distracted by the
shiny new things or tempted to
make poor business decisions. He
literally keeps us focused and
moving as a team toward our goals.
So how does this help those of you
that have years and decades in the
industry? Those of you who
don't want to make changes
and are comfortable where you
are? My answer would be
“planning”… There is always
something that needs to be seen
from the outside and planned
for. Having a coach on your
side line is the best way to do
just that.
I encourage each of you to, at
least, chat with Jeremy or me
about all of the experiences we
have with our coach. We
would not be where we are in
such comfort and short time
without him.
