July in the Sky 2010 Page 3 Page 4 July in the Sky 2010 “July In The Sky” Downtown! D owntown Rockville will once again be a prime viewing area to observe the “July in the Sky” fireworks display on Thursday, July 1st. The Vernon Parks and Recreation Department will coordinate events at Fox Hill Tower and Henry Park, while the Rockville Downtown Association (RDA) will coordinate viewing activities in downtown Rockville and Central Park, along Park Place, East Main Street, West Main Street and St. Bernard Terrace. Activities in downtown will begin at 6:00pm and continue to the end of the fireworks display, which should be approximately 10:00pm. The events will begin with the very popular “Push, Pull, Pedal, Patriotic Parade,” which traditionally features children, teens and adults riding, pushing, pulling or rolling anything that can move down the street and can be decorated to display a patriotic theme. Participants can appear in costume in addition to decorating their tricycles, bicycles, unicycles, wagons, carts, carriages, scooters, skateboards or roller skates. Ribbons and prizes will be awarded for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners in each of several age categories. The procession will organize in front of Bank of America at approximately 6:15pm, with decorating assistance being provided by volunteers prior to the start of the parade at 7:00-7:30pm. “Uncle Sam” will help to lead the parade along East Main Street, through the downtown area, to Union and Elm Street, and then back again. Throughout the evening, there will be musical entertainment, beginning with a stirring rendition of “The Star Spangled Banner” sung by Dennis Nevin. Then the evening belongs to one of this area’s most popular and beloved local bands, the “Arizona Maid Band” who will play some of the best known southern rock & roll tracks of the past 40 years. They will play from 8:00pm till the fireworks begin, at around 9:40pm. Downtown Rockville provides an excellent viewing vista, as the fireworks rise high into the sky above the Fox Hill Tower. The distance from downtown and the elevation of the display create a wonderful viewing experience. There is a festive feeling with an estimated 3,000+ people gathered together in downtown Rockville enjoying the parade, the music, the fire- works and the varied refreshments available. Local restaurants and merchants will be open during the festival activities, and each will have special menus and sale items to offer. Russ’s Time Rock & Roll Diner will be serving Hot Dogs, cheddarwurst, hamburgers, fruit salads, steak & cheese subs, along with iced cappuccino and root beer floats, while great pizza dishes are available at Pizza Palace and Antonio’s Pizzeria, and a variety of snacks and treats can be purchased from Rockville Corner Market and the Buck or Two Convenience Store. There will also be selected vendor booths selling specialty food items such as fried dough, popcorn, and other savory treats to commemorate the special day. It is suggested that spectators arrive early to take advantage of the free parking available in downtown and to select a preferred seating location, and bring blankets and chairs to assure comfortable seating for an evening of fun and entertainment! Throughout the entire evening, contributions will be accepted by RDA volunteers to help underwrite the costs of the activities. If you would like to assist on this event, please drop by the RDA office at 30 Park Place in downtown and sign up for an activity. Your support will be greatly appreciated. T he Downtown Rockville Association (RDA) will host the annual Push, Pull & Pedal Patriotic Parade preceding the July in the Sky Fireworks display on July 1st. This very popular parade, for both participants and spectators, offers the great advantage of people of all ages being able to participate. This will be the first activity of the evening in Downtown Rockville, with tricycles, bicycles, unicycles, wagons, carts, carriages, scooters, skateboards, and roller skates assembling in front of the Bank of America at approximately 6:15 pm. Decorating assistance will be provided prior to the start of the parade at 7:30 pm. The parade is open to people of all ages, whether adults, teens, or children. It is suitable especially for the entire family to participate or groups of neighbors. The challenge is to find something that can be ridden, pushed, pulled, or rolled and which can be decorated to display a patriotic theme. In addition to decorating the vehicle, many participants will appear in costumes. The sole requirement is that there must be red, white, and blue decoration of the vehicles and/or the participant. Participants will receive ribbons. In addition, there will be prizes awarded for first, second, and third place winners within different age categories. The parade will progress along East and West Main Streets to Elm Street, where it will make a loop and return to the starting point. The Vernon Police Department advises parade participants and spectators that the use of bikes, scooters, skateboards, etc. will be restricted during the festival solely to the parade and may not be used otherwise in Downtown Rockville.
