Beaver Bank Kinsac Bulletin The Voice of the Beaver Bank Community Awareness Association January 2016 T Community Date Book Proudly sponsored by: Issue #117 Former Wellington Resident Travels to Beaver Bank to Take Part in Parade of Lights See us on the Web at www.barrettlumber.com January 1st –Happy New Year! 12th- Registration begins for Free Parenting Program 18th- MLA Office hours begin in Beaver Bank 21st-Kenners Membership Meeting February 26th-Deadline to apply for Legislative Page Program 27th –Monte Carlo Night March 15th –Deadline to apply for donation through Community Dividend Fund As a member of the Regional Firefighters Interpretation Centre, Fall River, Jim Lackie loves to drive the 1958 American LaFrance pumper. Although he moved from Wellington, NS to St John, New Brunswick, earlier in the year he vowed to be in the Beaver Bank Parade of Lights with his favourite pumper. Jim traveled from St. John, NB to drive his favourite fire truck, No. 17, in the Beaver Bank Parade of Lights. Jim was accompanied by Dave, Lewanne and Kim and special parade presenters Madison and Valkylerie who got to ride in the hose bed. The Interpretation Center, a non-profit association has a wonderful collection of firefighting memorabilia and equipment and the building at 3214 Highway #2, Fall River, Nova Scotia is open to the public for all to enjoy, learn and remember. The facility recently experienced some roofing problems and some water damage but will re-open in the spring. For further information, visit their website at www.rficns.com . -Special thanks to Ken Meisner for submitting this story. Beaver Bank Kinsac Bulletin Page 2 of 12 Because You Gave, We Can Give This letter was recently sent to my attention and I thought it would be nice to share with the community. “Thank you to those who have contributed in any way to the needs of the people who are supported by the Gateway Food Bank. Together with Feed Nova Scotia, we are supplying approximately 60 households with turkeys and food at this Christmastime. The food hampers include extras that help make this season a pleasant time for families and individuals! We have an “angel” tree for people to buy a small gift for children of those families, and we deliver the hampers to them. The working poor, senior citizens, people on disability, pensioners, single parents, people who have lost their jobs suddenly, and people with serious illnesses are but a few situations where we are able to help! And, it’s all because others have a heart to see needs met in our community that we can keep going. We really appreciate those who donate and because of you we can do so much more than we otherwise could. For those of us who volunteer we get great satisfaction from seeing joy brought to others. Special thanks go to: people and organizations and businesses who provide groceries; several churches in our community who collect and bring food; a school who collected food and gave; church attendees who give money on a regular basis and when special needs arise; individuals who drop off donations of money or food (including turkeys); people who help during the month of December; those who wrap the hamper boxes; those who have filled the hampers and those who have delivered them; and a great team of regular volunteers who faithfully show up every week to prepare orders for the clients. We also appreciate those who come to give back when they don’t need help from the food bank any longer!!! Our Pancake Breakfast fundraiser brought in more than $1500. Thanks for participating! Thank you to the Beaver Bank Kinsac Bulletin that featured us in the last issue, making us known in the community! Again many thanks to anyone who has helped in any way big or small all helps in the big picture. We could not do this without your help!” Kaye Migchelsen Coordinator, Gateway Food Bank Annual Monte Carlo Night Feb 27th at 7pm Beaver Bank Kinsac Community Centre 1583 Beaver Bank Road Cowboy & Western Theme Cash Bar In support of the Beaver Bank Kinsac Bulletin And the BBCAA Black Jack Balloon Pop Door Prize Auction Beaver Bank Kinsac Bulletin Page 3 of 12 Lions Club Raise the roof Campaign – Building for a better Tomorrow – Today The Beaver Bank – Kinsac Lions Club is about to undertake a challenging and most worthwhile project - expansion of the present building located at 40 Sandy Lake Road. This expansion will see an addition added to the front portion of the Club; the dimensions of which are 24 x 20. It will take many hands and donations, whether in the form of monetary or materials, not to mention the time and hard work to make this project a success. We have the can do attitude and at the same time are excited to get things started. As a non-profit organization, our funds are extremely limited as the monies that are raised throughout the year, go back into the community to support the community. Over the years, we have been known as the small Club with big hearts. Beaver Bank – Kinsac Lions Club is seeking your help. The plans are drawn up and we are not far from starting this project. With this in mind, we will be seeking donations: cash, materials, services, time, etc. This undertaking will not succeed without the kind generosity of many, many people and businesses. Our “Raise the roof Campaign” has gotten off to an exciting start at our monthly General Meeting held on 20 October 2015. The Club was presented with a cheque for $20,000.00. What a fantastic way to start, but a long way to the finish line. addition in recognition of their support. No donation, whether in the form of monetary, materials or services, is too small. We hope you can participate with us in the exciting campaign. Additionally, all donors will be invited to attend the grand opening once expansion is complete. To donate, please contact Lion Bob Trowsdale 902 441-6669 or Lion Bev Hubley 902 865-9415. Thanking you in advance for your participation. All persons or businesses donating to the “Raise the roof Campaign” will have their names engraved on a plaque which will be displayed on a wall of the new Beaver Bank 10th Annual Parade of Lights 2nd Beaver Bank Scouting entered 3 highly decorated floats in this year’s Parade of Lights. Happy New Year!!! I hope you and your family had a holiday that was filled with happiness and cheer. It has been an honour and a pleasure meeting and working with many of you throughout this past year. I wish you the best of holidays and a prosperous 2016. Office Hours in Beaver Bank I will continue to hold office hours in Beaver Bank at the Beaver Bank Kinsac Community Centre on Monday’s 1:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m. Our next scheduled date is January 18, 2016. If there are any government publications or applications that you would like us to bring, just let us know (902-5763411). You can look for our Constituency Office sign in the parking lot during these hours. I look forward to seeing you there Legislation to Ensure Financial Sustainability Last month, the Public Service Sustainability Act was introduced. This legislation provides public sector employees with fair, affordable wage packages. Nova Scotia and Nova Scotians cannot afford a more costly settlement than that contained in the legislation – period. The legislation also ensures newer or lower paid civil servants receive larger pay increases, some will see increases of as much as five per cent per year. This piece of legislation also ensures that collective bargaining can continue: everything is negotiable except the overall wage packages – we hope our partners will have these discussions at the table with us. Nova Scotia’s fiscal plan and our labour settlements are about preparing Nova Scotia for long-term progress. All Nova Scotians have to play their part as we position the province for a stronger future. We have to continue to make tough choices so we can invest in quality health care, deliver first-rate education, and build essential new infrastructure in the future. Winter Assistance Heating Assistance Rebate Program Applicants must be able to show proof of payment for heat and meet the income thresholds: Single households with a net income of $27,000 or less, and households with two or more people with a net income of $42,000 or less, qualify. Applicants who receive the Guaranteed Income Supplement or Income Assistance also qualify. The HARP program offers a rebate cheque of up to $200.00. Home Warming For homeowners who qualify, the HomeWarming team provides an energy audit and works with you to determine the energy efficiency upgrades that make the most sense for you and your loved ones. The HomeWarming team then takes care of managing sub-contractors to have the upgrades completed at no cost to you. To qualify you must own a single unit home and can provide proof of ownership. You live in your home year-round and you do not plan to sell it in the near future. Income Qualification is as follows: 1 person 2 – 4 people 5 + people $20,952 $38,931 $55,444 For further information on these programs, please contact our office at 902-576-3411. Remembrance Day Ceremony held in Beaver Bank Kinsac On November 11th, 2015, on the anniversary of the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month of the Great War, Beaver Bank Kinsac joined the nation in remembrance of our Veterans. The ceremony began with the march to the Cenotaph and words of welcome by Master of Ceremonies, Lisa Blackburn. The prayer was led by Reverend Mike Zottarelli and Chief Petty Officer Second Class Ron Rideout recited “In Flanders Fields”. Many wreaths were then laid beginning with Joanne Pasha who laid a wreath on behalf of Walter Lively, one of the founders of our Cenotaph. The following officials were on hand to lay wreaths: representing the Government of Canada, Daniel Campagna, representing the Government of Nova Scotia, Bill Horne and Stephen Gough. Personal wreaths were then laid by Judy Barkhouse, Karen Bungay, Christine and Darlene Thomas, Jim & Marlene Cullen, Grayson Peters and Constable Saxon Peters, Joanne Pasha, Fred Gallop, Lathum DeWolf, Kelly Potter and Sandra Tanner, Nathalie Bowden, Kathlene Shunamon, Jenny Barlow, Jessica Davison, and Dianna Doherty. Wreaths laid by community groups and organizations included: the Beaver Bank Community Policing Volunteer Association, 4th Sackville Scouting, 2nd Beaver Bank A Colony Beaver Scouts, 2nd Beaver Bank Scouting Group, 2nd Beaver Bank Cubs, 8th Sackville Colony, Kinette Club of Sackville, Lions Club of Beaver Bank Kinsac, St. John’s United Church Beaver Bank, 6th Sackville Beavers, Beaver Bank Kinsac Community Centre, Girl Guides of Canada (Carter District), Kinsman Club of Sackville, Beaver Bank Kinsac Fire Department, and the 2nd Beaver Bank Beaver Scouts. Following the wreath laying ceremony there was a reading of “Why Wear a Poppy?”. The playing of the last post followed with the moment of silence. Thank you to all those who participated and helped prepare this year’s ceremony. Beaver Bank Kinsac Bulletin Page 8 of 12 Update from Station 48 – Happy New Year! Happy New Year from the members of the Beaver Bank – Kinsac Volunteer Fire Department, proudly serving our community for over 50 years. On behalf of the members, I would like to thank the community for your support in 2015 and we wish everyone a safe and prosperous 2016. Your fire department continues to be busy training and responding to calls within our community. Since the last update, we have responded to 19 calls; 11 medical assists, 3 motor vehicle accidents, 2 alarms activated, 1 carbon monoxide alarm, and 2 structure fires. This brings our total to 119 responses for assistance. By the time the Bulletin gets published we should be above our normal average of 120 responses per year. With winter finally here, here are a few safety tips from your friendly neighborhood firefighters that will hopefully help prevent a call for us to visit your home. Driving Habits – Our road conditions can change quickly with the winter weather. Black ice, snow covered roads, and longer hours of darkness during our regular commute are a real concern. Some suggestions are the use of appropriate winter tires, a roadside emergency kit, a blanket, and a good snowbrush to keep your windshield and windows clear of that dirty ice and snow. The main tip is to drive for the conditions showing, slow and steady will always get you safely home. If you don’t have to be on the roads, then relax at home. Ice Safety – With the temperature dropping, the ponds will start to freeze over and turn to ice covered playgrounds for everyone. Before you venture out on the ice, have a responsible person check the thickness of the ice. Some of our ponds in the area (Barrett Lake & Tucker Lake) have the ice thickness measured by HRM. You can check out the HRM website for these Ice Thickness Reports and safety notes about activities on frozen ponds and lakes. As a general guide – a person skating alone on ice requires 15 cm of ice thickness. For a skating party or group – 20 cm. For a snowmobile or ATV – 25 cm of ice thickness is recommended. Adopt A Hydrant – For our residents who have a fire hydrant near their property, the fire department would like you to “adopt” the hydrant this winter. If you have the time and opportunity, why not keep it clear of ice and snow. This not only helps the fire department in protecting your home in the event we are called there, but the homes of your fellow neighbors. January and February will continue to be busy months for the volunteers of your fire department. Besides the regular training and call outs for emergencies, the Fire Department will be taking some extra refresher training to keep our members up to date and current in our skills. On behalf of the members of the Fire Department, from our families to yours, we would like to wish everyone in the community a Happy New Year and a safe 2016. Until next time – stay and play safe.
