What a night! What a day! What a weekend!
By now most of the volunteers who made our 10th Birthday celebrations such a
resounding success have probably recovered from their efforts. From the months
of planning leading up to the events of April 4th and 6th through to the immediate
preparation and cleanup that occupied some people for the best part of a week, the
effort put in by so many was outstanding.
Beginning with the 60’s and 70’s night at the Maffra Memorial hall, once again
the attendees strutted their stuff in some very imaginative finery and the Rusty
Rockers played their hearts out, a great night. We had wisely decided to hold this
event on the Friday night to have a recovery day and time to prepare for the big
10th Birthday open day on the Sunday. The weather on the Saturday was threatening at every turn and for a while it looked as though our big day might be a washout, but apart from a very light shower early in the day it remained clear and the
people came, boy did they come, an estimated 2-3000 of them, to enjoy our hospitality and our celebration.
The stalls, the events, the impressive display of club cars and individual vehicles,
the free sausages (until we eventually ran out), the Shannons “Big Rig”, which
alone saw 905 visitors, the almost non-stop activity at the second barbecue and
the busy canteen all added to the atmosphere. As ever, people who hadn’t been to
the shed before were most impressed by the vehicle display, which was further
enhanced on this occasion by a comprehensive display of period clothing by the
local history group.
Despite the publicity advertising this as free day, quite a few people were prepared to pay for their entry to the shed and were pleasantly surprised when they
didn’t have to. As publicized, this was our way of saying thank you to the wider
community for their support during the past 10 years, but also very much a celebration of our achievements and our pride in what we have developed during that
time from an idea put forward by three people. As Deputy Premier and GVC
member, Peter Ryan said to me, “I still can’t believe what has been achieved
here”.
I can’t begin to thank individually those that made this event a success and I
won’t try as this was a true team effort with 70-80 volunteers somehow coping
with the extraordinary numbers of people that came to the grounds and through
our doors. Well done to everyone who participated.

A husband went to the police station to file a “missing person” report for his missing wife:
Husband: I lost my wife, she went shopping and hasn’t come back.
Inspector: What is her Height?
Husband: I never checked
Inspector: Slim or healthy?
Husband: Not slim, can be healthy.
Inspector: Colour of Eyes?
Husband: Never noticed
Inspector: Colour of hair?
Husband: Changes according to season
Inspector: What was she wearing?
Husband: I think it was red, but not sure whether it was a dress or a suit.
Inspector: Was she driving?
Husband: Yes
Inspector: Tell me the make, model & colour of the vehicle *
Husband: She was driving a harvest tan CJ-3A with a buick V6 that generates 250 horsepower powering a Ford
Toploader 4 Speed. It has a full cage coloured a faux shade of aluminium. The winch on the front is a classic pre
-warn belleview winch held up by an ARB bumper that I customised. There’s a small scratch on the hood and a
dent on the rear quarter panel*.
The husband halted, then started crying*
Inspector: Don’t worry sir, *.. We will find your jeep.

AMMA Report
http://www.australasianmotormuseums.com.au/
The commiee of the Australasian Motor Museums Associaon (AMMA) have recently climbed into planes,
trains & automobiles to aend the Australian Motorlife Museum in Wollongong for our half yearly face to
face meeng.
With the assistance of Bob Williams (President – Motorlife), Wendy Muddell (honorary Curator - Motorlife)
and Andrew Grant (past Curator, now volunteer – Powerhouse Discovery Centre) we workshopped our business plan through to 2020 and held our regular meeng to complete the business of the associaon, before
taking a tour through this fantasc facility. I would recommend a visit.
The associaon is travelling very well at present having grown to 60 members again a.er some losses in previous years. We welcomed back the Geelong Museum of Motoring, formerly the Ford Discovery Centre collecon and have also welcomed our first NZ member this financial year. The updated Website and first Naonal Museums Brochure have been very well received and we have also found some service providers to try
and resolve issues such as insurance, which members had idenfied as problemac. We are currently exploring the opportunity to set up a buying group to see if we can cut the cost of common items of retail stock and
will likely join with the RACV to produce a Victorian Motor Museums brochure which they can be handed to
parcipants in RACV events.

Club Plate Scheme Update
PAGE
8
Graham Gunning & Peter Johnson attended an information meeting, organised by Association of Motoring Clubs (AOMC) held in Melbourne on 17th May 2014.
The focus of this meeting was to advise members of the outcomes of lengthy discussions between
AOMC & Vic Roads regarding the review of the Victorian Club Plate Scheme (CPS) commonly referred to as Red Plates.
Technical Changes
Vic Roads will be formally advising car clubs of new regulations & guidelines for the reviewed CPS
scheme within the coming months.
The major focus of these changes is an attempt to address the issue of CPS vehicles being registered
under incorrect categories.
The new regulations “Vehicle Standards Information” VSI-33 will work in conjunction with current
VSI-8 regulations & where applicable VSB-14 regulations.
Basic Summary of Changes proposed by Vic Roads to existing CPS scheme:
Club ‘safety inspections’ will be restricted to pre 1931 vehicles
Car clubs providing the CPS for its members will be required to keep photographic records of vehicles
under the scheme. Photographs of front, rear & sides of the vehicle, engine bay, driver’s compartment, vin plate if applicable, will be minimum requirement for all clubs to conduct the CPS.
A new category for modified vehicles with suffix “M” plate will be introduced.
New regulations will apply for Historic vehicles under new VSI-33 parameters.
VSI 33 regulations will be divided into three categories
Vehicles built pre 1 Jan 1949
Vehicles built post 1 Jan 1949 and pre 1 Jan 1969
Vehicles built post 31 Jan 1968
Application of Regulations:
Where a vehicle exceeds the requirements of VSI-33, they shall be required to meet the regulatory criteria laid down in VSI-8. Where the vehicle exceeds the requirements of VSI-8, they shall be required
to meet the regulatory criteria laid down in VSB-14.
The effective date for the introduction of the new VSI-33 regulations will be sometime before the end
2014 (proposed), including introduction of the M plate modified category, photographic evidence on
file new applicants & application of VSI 33. This does not prohibit clubs from introducing new processes in the current time frame, to administer the CPS as they see fit in the future.
VASS certification will be required for all Modified “M” plate vehicles. This will also be applicable
to all vehicles that need to be changed over from Historic plates to the Modified category if it does not
fit within VSI33 & VSI 8. Vic Roads will accept older engineer’s certification on applications, where
modified vehicles are currently registered, under another scheme & are required to move into the modified category.
Photographic evidence & official certification of vehicles on the scheme will initially apply to new
applicants. Current club plated vehicles will need to be aligned to the record keeping processes as
directed by Vic Roads.

10th Birthday Celebrations
Let it be said:
the Gippsland Vehicle Collection (GVC)
knows how to throw a party!
More than 2000 visitors from across Gippsland and beyond, converged on the
Maffra Motor Museum on Sunday, 6 April, to help the GVC celebrate its 10th
birthday.
The grounds were filled with display vehicles from across the region and visitors divided their time between those on show in the grounds, the permanent
display in the Museum and the huge range of other activities on offer.
The fashion through the ages exhibit helped to provide context to the periods
of the vehicles on show in the Museum, and the sewing memorabilia and huge
model train display also proved popular additions.
There was a constant stream of people posing for ‘selfies’ in display vehicle
‘photo booths’ and the Shannons Super Rig was inundated with people wanting to show off their driving skills in the gaming area or check out the vehicle
memorabilia.
The Mad Max vehicles and their costumed owners Alan and Karen Potter,
were a massive draw card, with Humungus fired up regularly to show off its
flames and significantly loud engine.
Meanwhile, the Holden vs Ford tug-o-war drew some highly competitive
teams, and some dubious helping hands from ‘Aunty Jack’, apparently a distant relative of Newry’s Steve Dwyer, and MC Darren McCubbin. The SES
‘jaws of life’ demonstration and the CFA’s smoke tent grabbed the crowd’s attention and the kids could barely be pulled away from the arcade games, the
wood working and badge making workshops, the jumping castles and the face
painting stand.
The day was capped off by the Heyfield Vintage Machinery display, the
Gippsland Armed Forces Museum, the team from the Stratford Shakespeare
Festival who circulated through the crowds adding to the festive atmosphere,
the great market stalls, some great food and coffee, and a fantastic flyover by
one of the RAAF Roulettes.
10th Birthday—Part 2
Both Deputy Premier of Victoria, and foundation member of the GVC, the Honourable Peter Ryan, and Wellington Shire Council Mayor, Councillor Scott Rosetti, attended the day and spoke at the official ceremonies, with Mr Ryan ruing the day he
got rid of his 1974 Ford Falcon GT.
Both congratulated the GVC on their milestone and on the various successes they’ve
had over the years, in which they’ve built the Maffra Motor Museum from a bare
building inhabited by pigeons to the Wellington Shire’s most popular non-naturebased attraction.
GVC President Duncan Malcolm thanked his Executive and the GVC’s team of volunteers for the work that had gone in to making the birthday celebrations possible,
with a special mention to event coordinator Sue Lawrence, Peter Quennell and Ian
Kennedy as well as the large group of volunteers from the Kingsway Church who
volunteered their time on the day.
“And we especially want to thank the community for all the support they have given
us over the years,” Mr Malcolm said.
“Without it, we wouldn’t be here. There is an Executive and a membership that
have worked hard to build the GVC and the Motor Museum to what they are today.
“But none of it would have been possible without the support of the community.
“The organisation runs predominantly on funds raised in the community and we
have held countless fund raising efforts through events like the Maffra Mardi Gras
and our own display days and one-offs like Tops off for Cancer.
“We have had enormous community support in all of these fund-raising efforts.
“We also had enormous community support in the building stage of the Museum,
with people dropping off things they didn’t need but thought we might find useful;
tradies volunteering with their respective skills and doing countless jobs for free –
there have been many, many in-kind donations as well as financial ones, and for all
of them we are extremely grateful.
“To everyone who has contributed, either with donations, or by visiting the Museum, attending one of our display days, or recommending the Museum to a friend,
we thank you wholeheartedly.”
The GVC also kicked off their birthday celebrations on Friday night with a ‘60s and
‘70s night at the Maffra Memorial Hall.
The evening featured ‘60s and ‘70s trivia, prizes for the best costumes from the era,
and great music from the GVC Rusty Rockers.
“Everyone had a great time, there was a lot of effort put into costumes, the music
was great and it was just a wonderful atmosphere,” event coordinator Sue Lawrence
said.
“It’s been a great celebration for us and the turn out on Sunday from the community,
showing their support for the GVC once again, has just exceeded all expectations.
We are thrilled with how the whole weekend went.”
The GVC is currently open every day for the school holidays.

Introducing: Kellie Willis—WillWrite Communications
The long road to Maffra and the GVC.
Hi members!
My name is Kellie Willis and I started working on publicity for the
GVC in January 2014.
I began my career as a journalist way back in 1998 working on my
local, The Forbes Advocate, in Central West NSW and went on to
The Land newspaper, where I had the opportunity to write an article about the evolution of Lamborghini from tractor to car manufacturer.
After two years of planes, trains, and all manner of automobiles
around Asia, including six months perched on the back of a sparkling purple Enfield in India, I returned to Sydney and worked for
a suite of legal affairs publications as features editor for Lawyers
Weekly, deputy editor for Lawyer2B and editor of the Australian
Corporate Lawyers Association Journal.
The travel bug bit again and this time I headed off around Australia
in a 1981 Troopy. A six-week stint in the Darwin office of Tourism
NT’s Global PR and Media division led to me spending five years
with the organisation and working my way up to the role of Director, overseeing public relations campaigns across Australia, the UK, Germany, France, Italy, Japan, China, Singapore and the US.
It was while in the tropical city of Darwin that a boy from the pretty town of Maffra stole my heart,
married me and helped out with the production of a 2012 model Alfie Rocket. Things change when
you start a family and while I was pregnant we decided that despite our deep love for Darwin and the
tropics, we wanted our child to grow up surrounded by family. When Alfie was three weeks old we
flew south and set about creating a new life here in my husband Tom’s hometown, and exploring
Gippsland as much as possible, heading off on camping trips whenever we get the chance.
I started WillWrite Communications last year and was really excited when the opportunity came up to
work with the Gippsland Vehicle Collection.
I can’t really call myself an enthusiast – we prioritise music and travel over what we’re driving – however, I really enjoy seeing the amazing vehicles that other people are devoting their time and hardearned money to, and hearing the stories behind them. Besides that, I’ve found everyone I’ve come
across at the GVC to be just wonderful – kind, happy, generous, helpful, funny and passionate – and
that alone makes it a great organisation to be involved with.
Since joining the team my main tasks have been to create publicity for the Travelling Through Time
Display day in March and the mammoth 10th birthday celebrations in April.
We’ve had some great hits with a regular presence in the Gippsland Times, including the front page
on Tuesday, April 8, East Gippsland News and La Trobe Valley Express; a great article in The Weekly
Times featuring the 1921 La France Speedster and coverage of the birthday celebrations on both Prime
and WIN News. Online coverage has also been significant and the social
media hype on Facebook in the lead up to 10th birthday celebrations, and
especially the free community day, was fantastic and another demonstration of the support the GVC has in its local community.
I am in the process of preparing a full report on the coverage that has been
received to date as well as finalising a publicity plan for the next four
months, which will include promotion of the next display day as well as
ongoing promotion of the Maffra Motor Museum.
As part of that process I’ll be profiling some of the members and their vehicles, so if you know of someone who has a great story, or think there’s
something great in the Museum that often gets missed, or have any other
story ideas or feedback,
please don’t hesitate to call on 0429 329 989 or
email [email protected]
I look forward to meeting you!
