When I started at CFCW back in 1989, the first event I
ever volunteered for was Country Music Week, which
came to Edmonton the following year. It has returned
four times since then and it’s been fun to watch the
event and the CCMA grow into such an incredible
celebration of Canadian country music.
A huge thank you to the Province of Alberta and the
City of Edmonton for believing in our dream of bringing
Country Music Week and the CCMA Awards to our city
for two consecutive years. We’d also like to recognize
our numerous local sponsors, please have a look at our
sponsor page and show them the love back.
Your local Host Committee; Ingrid Roffel, Jo-Ann
Yewchuk, Tracy & Leanne Telford, Marisa Jodoin, Chris

CCMA DISCOVERY PROGRAM
Now in its second year, the CCMA Discovery
Program was developed by the Canadian
Country Music Association® (CCMA®) to
educate and support Canadian country
music artists in their pursuit of a career in
the music industry. This year, the CCMA
was proud to announce a new partnership
with the Royal Bank of Canada, through
which the organization pledged to support
the Program through their RBC Emerging
Artists Project.
Over 180 applications from across the
country were submitted for the Program
this year. An industry-led jury whittled the
list down to six deserving finalists: David
James, The Lovelocks (Ali Raney and Zoe
Neuman), Jordan McIntosh, Emily Reid,
Tanya Ryan and Nicole Scott.

The Discovery journey began for these six
acts when they convened in Toronto this
past spring for Music Industry Discovery
Week. It was at this time that the finalists
learned, in-depth, about the music business
and artist development through industryled information sessions and seminars.
Performance coaching, a stylist appointment
and an industry-only showcase rounded out
the experience.
Over the course of the summer, each
act benefited from a mentorship with an
established Canadian country musical act.
Lisa Brokop, Chad Brownlee, Patricia Conroy,
Carolyn Dawn Johnson, Charlie Major and
the Small Town Pistols all lent their time and
expertise to the finalists and the program,
and for that the CCMA is truly thankful.
The Discovery Program elicits a special
bond among its finalists. Regardless of
the outcome, the six acts look forward to
meeting once again at Country Music Week,
when the 2014 CCMA Discovery Award

WHAT’S YOUR MOST MEMORABLE FAN INTERACTION
FROM THE PAST YEAR? We met a couple whose song
was “Anything At All”. It meant so much to them that
the guy had an anchor and the lyrics tattooed on his

WHEN DID YOU FIRST DEVELOP A LOVE OF COUNTRY
MUSIC? Tareya: I always loved country music; growing
up in Calgary, I developed a deep appreciation for it.
Mike: When I was a kid my dad used to play Johnny
Cash records. I became obsessed with country music
and its amazing guitarists like Vince Gill, Brent Mason
and Keith Urban.
WHAT WAS A CAREER HIGHLIGHT FOR YOU OVER
THE PAST YEAR? My first ever # 1 Billboard hit for
“When Your Lips Are So Close”.
WHAT’S YOUR MOST MEMORABLE FAN INTERACTION
FROM THE PAST YEAR? At all of our shows the fans
are so great, but I really love the charity side of my
job and making a difference in people’s lives – those
interactions mean the most.
WHEN DID YOU FIRST DEVELOP A LOVE OF
COUNTRY MUSIC? I loved music since the day I was
born, but it was the music in the early 1990s, and Garth
Brooks that made me fall in love with real country
music. “God Bless Chris Ledoux”.

FROM THE PAST YEAR? I met a fan at the Calgary

song just meant that much to her.
WHEN DID YOU FIRST DEVELOP A LOVE OF
COUNTRY MUSIC? I grew up with country radio,
TNN, CMT, The Grand Ole Opry and nights around the
campfire singing Garth, Alan, Brooks & Dunn, George
and more.
WHAT WAS A CAREER HIGHLIGHT FOR YOU OVER
THE PAST YEAR? [Ryan Langlois] It would have to
be our debut at Big Valley Jamboree this summer.
As a western Canadian kid growing up, BVJ was the
BIGGEST country music event going. To play the main
stage and receive a standing ovation, then to perform
at the songwriter tent with Russell deCarle (who is a
big inspiration for me) and sing “One Way Track” with
him, was truly incredible.

WHAT’S YOUR MOST MEMORABLE FAN INTERACTION
FROM THE PAST YEAR? It was around our third night
at Nashville North (Calgary Stampede) this year. The
place was jammed with a couple thousand rowdies and
when we started playing our single “Peace Of Mind”,
this guy rushed the stage with his girlfriend and started
singing, check that, screaming the song at the top of
his lungs, word for word. Pretty darn cool!
WHEN DID YOU FIRST DEVELOP A LOVE OF
COUNTRY MUSIC? Probably in the back-back seat of
my family’s old wood panelled Ford station wagon. My
folks listened to all kinds of music but always seemed
to end up back at country. Willie, Merle, Cash, Nitty

NOMINEE Q&A
WHAT WAS A CAREER HIGHLIGHT FOR YOU OVER
THE PAST YEAR? Hands down, without a doubt, being
nominated for the 12th time for the CCMA Fans’ Choice

received to my first single in over two years, “Forever
Summer”, and shows for the National Music Centre,
Prince Edward Island Celebration Zone, Boots and
Hearts and of course, the Full Circle concert event at
the Saddledome during The Calgary Stampede. But
mostly, the nomination.
WHAT’S YOUR MOST MEMORABLE FAN INTERACTION

That was cool.

WHEN DID YOU FIRST DEVELOP A LOVE OF COUNTRY
MUSIC? I was a Garth convert. I have a pretty broad
musical palette, and enjoy many genres and artists,
but when I saw the energy and rock music sensibilities
he brought to great storylines and traditional country
music, I suddenly found my own musical North Star in
country music as a writer and artist.
2014 NOMINEE & PERFORMER
WHAT WAS A CAREER HIGHLIGHT FOR YOU OVER
THE PAST YEAR? Making the transition from smaller
venues into the arenas was definitely a career milestone
for me. The advantage to smaller venues is that it’s
easier to connect with my fans. The challenge of going
to a larger stage is keeping that intimacy – a huge
challenge but one I feel we were able to accomplish. I
felt each night that the guys and I were still right there
with them.
WHAT’S YOUR MOST MEMORABLE FAN INTERACTION
FROM THE PAST YEAR? I met a little boy in an
autograph line in Barrie; he was a special little guy, full
of life. He waited over two hours to meet me. For some
reason we talked for a while that day. He pretended
to be disinterested at points and looking down at his
shoes with an ‘aw shucks’ kind of way about him…he
was very memorable. He passed away tragically just a
few months later. Life is fragile, he reminds me of that.
He reminds me that every person I meet has a very real
story behind the few seconds that I spend with them.

WHEN DID YOU FIRST DEVELOP A LOVE OF COUNTRY
MUSIC? When I was 5 years old I had a Mickey Mouse

I ran around the house in my coonskin hat and wore
that song out. That was the beginning of my love of
country music. My dad also listened to the radio a lot,
which opened the doors to artists like Dwight Yoakam,
who ultimately sealed the deal for me.

WHAT WAS A CAREER HIGHLIGHT FOR YOU OVER

WHAT’S YOUR MOST MEMORABLE FAN INTERACTION
FROM THE PAST YEAR? After one of my shows, I was
at my merch table saying hi to everyone who came out.
This one guy knew he couldn’t have much time because
there was a line-up; but he lined up repeatedly, buying

WHEN DID YOU FIRST DEVELOP A LOVE OF COUNTRY
MUSIC? When I was young, my grandpa used to always
play old country/western tunes. I remember listening
to the lyrics and falling in love with the storytelling
right away.
WHAT WAS A CAREER HIGHLIGHT FOR YOU OVER
THE PAST YEAR? The past year has been quite a
whirlwind; but some definite highlights have been
getting to hear my song on country radio for the first
time, playing over 50 shows on the We Are Pioneers
worldwide tour with The Band Perry, sharing the stage
with Keith Urban at the Calgary Stampede and getting
to make my debut at the Grand Ole Opry.
WHAT’S YOUR MOST MEMORABLE FAN INTERACTION
FROM THE PAST YEAR? I toured Europe for the first
time with The Band Perry this past year. There was a
group of girls from the UK that came to about 8 shows
on the tour. They would show up early at the venue to
be the first ones in line so the minute the doors would
open, they could rush up to the stage to be front row
center. By the second show they came to, they had
gone on YouTube and learned my whole set. Every
night they would be there, front row center, singing
along and doing actions to all the songs. Their passion
and excitement for music truly inspired me.

WHEN DID YOU FIRST DEVELOP A LOVE OF COUNTRY
MUSIC? I first developed my love for country music
when I was about 8 years old, traveling to bluegrass

that I could, listening to a lot of Chet Atkins and Tommy
Emmanuel. Starting on piano at age 6, a couple years
later all I wanted to do was be Shania Twain. I knew
every word to almost any Shania, Dixie Chicks and
Faith Hill song. From there I just listened to the radio
for hours on end, playing guitar solo after
guitar solo.

NOMINEE Q&A
WHAT WAS A CAREER HIGHLIGHT FOR YOU OVER
THE PAST YEAR? There have been so many highlights.
I think the thing that most stands out to me was playing
Boots and Hearts this year with Lee Brice and Luke
Bryan. It was really an emotional moment listening and
watching 35,000 people sing my songs back to me. It
was a thrill and a night I’ll never forget.
WHAT’S YOUR MOST MEMORABLE FAN INTERACTION

WHEN DID YOU FIRST DEVELOP A LOVE OF COUNTRY
MUSIC? I had an uncle that played acoustic guitar
when my brother and I were growing up. I thought he
was the world’s most brilliant songwriter... that is, until
he told me one day that all those songs were by Hank
Williams, Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson, and John Prine!
So I suppose my love for country came early and never
left my bones.
WHAT WAS A CAREER HIGHLIGHT FOR YOU OVER
THE PAST YEAR? I would have to say, getting to meet
and write with people in Nashville that I have always
looked up to has been a highlight in the past year. I feel
like I’ve grown as a person and as an artist.
WHAT’S YOUR MOST MEMORABLE FAN INTERACTION
FROM THE PAST YEAR? That would have to be on
my most recent promo tour out east: I met a girl from
Moncton who could unfortunately relate to my new
single “Quarterback” all too well. She was with her
mother who was very emotional, and she thanked me
for shedding light on a subject that she herself had felt
ashamed to even talk about. She had finally come to
peace with it and realized that none of it was her fault.

My mom grew up on a farm in Orangeville, and they
both lived in Calgary for a while when my father was in

WHAT WAS A CAREER HIGHLIGHT FOR YOU OVER
THE PAST YEAR? This has been an unbelievable year

the amazing shows I was able to perform at. There’s

WHEN DID YOU FIRST DEVELOP A LOVE OF

like Album of the Year is a dream come true.
WHAT’S YOUR MOST MEMORABLE FAN INTERACTION
FROM THE PAST YEAR? Hosting the 12-hour online CD
release party. On the day I released my fourth album
All Kinds Of Crazy, I performed 4 mini concerts via
u-stream and chatted with fans from all over the world
on Facebook and Twitter for 12 hours straight. It was
quite a marathon and with the help of my fans All Kinds
Of Crazy climbed to #6 on the iTunes Canada albums
chart!

WHEN DID YOU FIRST DEVELOP A LOVE OF COUNTRY
MUSIC? I remember watching my mom and uncle play
guitar at various functions while I was growing up. They
knew the basic guitar chords and would sing classic
country songs. I remember seeing the joy it brought
to people; that’s when I knew I wanted to make music
my career.

WHAT’S YOUR MOST MEMORABLE FAN INTERACTION
FROM THE PAST YEAR? Watching super-fan Serena’s
reaction when her BFF, Richard set up a surprise

WHEN DID YOU FIRST DEVELOP A LOVE OF
COUNTRY MUSIC? Country music is part of the fabric
of life where I grew up in Mabou, Cape Breton, and
I’ve been listening to it ever since I can remember. Kris
Kristofferson was probably one of the first Country
artists that I really tuned into.
WHAT WAS A CAREER HIGHLIGHT FOR YOU OVER
THE PAST YEAR? Performing and recording a duet
with Engelbert Humperdinck.
WHAT’S YOUR MOST MEMORABLE FAN INTERACTION
FROM THE PAST YEAR? Being part of and performing
for the children of the Music Heals program at the Sick
Kids Hospital. It is the reason I do what I do.
WHEN DID YOU FIRST DEVELOP A LOVE OF COUNTRY

Rich LPs. I was instantly drawn to the storytelling and
working class sensibilities of country music.

WHAT WAS A CAREER HIGHLIGHT FOR YOU OVER
THE PAST YEAR? I [Jason McCoy] think playing a rock
show with Korn and leaving the stage with the crowd
chanting “Hammers! Hammers!” was tops for us... It felt
good to play with such a unique line-up and be proud
of the identity the fans have allowed us to have.
The Road

WHAT’S YOUR MOST MEMORABLE FAN INTERACTION
FROM THE PAST YEAR? We had a fan recently get a
tattoo of The Road Hammer logo on their arm. We’ve
had that happen before, but this one said “Hammer
Fan For Life”. Pretty amazing to see that. Makes you
want to bring your ‘A’ game every time.
WHEN DID YOU FIRST DEVELOP A LOVE OF
COUNTRY MUSIC? I fell in love with country music
listening to CFCW when I was 6 years old in Bashaw,
Alberta.
2014 NOMINEES & PERFORMERS
WHAT WAS A CAREER HIGHLIGHT FOR YOU OVER
THE PAST YEAR? Having a 3-week #1 Country song in
America with a song I co-wrote, “Mine Would Be You”,
recorded by Blake Shelton; and being nominated for
both a GRAMMY (Best Country Song), and an ACM
(Song of the Year) for that song.
WHAT’S YOUR MOST MEMORABLE FAN INTERACTION
FROM THE PAST YEAR? On a couple of occasions,
I was singing “Main Street, 1979” on stage and felt a
special connection with someone in the crowd. You
can see them tear up, which usually makes me tear up.
After the show, people sometimes share their stories of
how that song was personal and meaningful for them,
which always reminds me of the potential power music
has to connect us all through shared experiences.
Deric

WHEN DID YOU FIRST DEVELOP A LOVE OF COUNTRY
MUSIC? It happened gradually for me. My mom had
an old 45 of a band called The Springfields singing
“Silver Threads And Golden Needles” that I loved as a
kid; hearing Gordon Lightfoot sing “Sundown” on my
parent’s car radio; listening to John Fogerty belt out
country-rooted songs like “Bad Moon Rising”, “Green
River”, and “Who’ll Stop The Rain” on my parent’s
record player; my dad playing Randy Travis around the
house. What pushed me over the edge and made me
want to chase this dream forever was hearing Steve
Earle’s Copperhead Road record for the first time.

WHAT’S YOUR MOST MEMORABLE FAN INTERACTION
FROM THE PAST YEAR? We recently wrote a song that
will be on our upcoming album that is very personal to
us both, about the honest feelings we are going through
embarking on being parents. We have been breaking
down our live show and playing it acoustically this
summer. To see how strongly people in the audience
identify with it has been amazing!
WHEN DID YOU FIRST DEVELOP A LOVE OF COUNTRY
MUSIC? Hearing Ricky Skaggs and Patsy Cline – those
are some of our earliest childhood memories of
listening to country music. We were hooked!
WHAT WAS A CAREER HIGHLIGHT FOR YOU OVER
THE PAST YEAR? There are a couple this year: Opening
up for Florida Georgia Line on their Western Canadian

they showed me was incredible. Of course, I can’t
forget having my single “Tippin’ Point” go Platinum!
WHAT’S YOUR MOST MEMORABLE FAN INTERACTION
FROM THE PAST YEAR? We had a fundraiser for a little
guy named Jakey near my hometown of Langley, BC.
Having him present me with a painting he made is
something I’ll never forget.
WHEN DID YOU FIRST DEVELOP A LOVE OF

memorable interactions of the past year was having
Western Swing Hall of Fame inductee, Carolyn Martin,
contact us and tell us she was a real fan of what we
were doing. We ended up getting to do some shows
together which was an amazing experience.
WHEN DID YOU FIRST DEVELOP A LOVE OF
COUNTRY MUSIC? For me [Shane Guse] it was at a
very early age. My parents used to have an old reel to
reel machine that played music for parties. One of the
songs on that reel was a recording of Merle Haggard
doing an old song called “Cherokee Maiden”. There
was just something about that song that I couldn’t get

to recognize two individuals who have left an
indelible mark on the industry, Wendell Ferguson
and Ron Sakamoto.
A JUNO-nominated performer, Ferguson is also
a multiple CCMA Award nominee, has won the
CCMA All Star Band – Guitar Award six times, and
served on the CCMA Board of Directors as well.
Ferguson was a leading force and songwriter for
the country group Coda The West in the ’80s, and
continues to be a highly sought producer, musical
director and band leader.
RON SAKAMOTO
As the 2014 Builder inductee, Ron Sakamoto will
receive the Canadian Country Music Hall of Fame
Stan Klees Builder Award in recognition of his
career in live event production and management
that spans an impressive 48 years. Working
tirelessly to create opportunity for Canadian
country music artists both in Canada, and the
U.S., Sakamoto has always advocated the benefits
of bringing acts to secondary markets, and
consistently gives back to those communities
himself.
Over the years, Sakamoto has won over 40 awards
in the music industry, including an unprecedented
17 consecutive CCMA Awards for Talent Buyer or

being named after him. Sakamoto has served
on the board of the Country Music Association
(CMA) in Nashville as well as the CCMA, and
currently sits on the International Entertainment
Buyers Association (IEBA) Board of Directors.

COUNTRY MUSIC WEEK 2014
AWARDS OF ACHIEVEMENT
SLAIGHT MUSIC
HUMANITARIAN
AWARD
“Beverley Mahood has long used the stage and her
talents to champion causes that need awareness,
support and give voice to philanthropic endeavors
she cares deeply about,” noted Ron Kitchener,
Chair of the CCMA Board of Directors, upon the
announcement that the multi-talented Beverley
Mahood would be the recipient of the 2014 Slaight
Music Humanitarian Award.
A successful singer, songwriter, actress, model
and television host, Beverley Mahood is wellknown as a popular and dynamic entertainer,
yet it’s Mahood’s unwavering commitment
to humanitarian work that has become her
indisputable calling card. With a passion for
community endeavors that nearly rivals her love
of music, Mahood has chosen to focus much of her
charitable efforts on causes that benefit children.
2014 marked Mahood’s 17th consecutive year cohosting the Kinsmen Telemiracle, which raises
Beverley Mahood
funds for families of children with disabilities and
people with special needs within the province
of Saskatchewan. Mahood devotes her time to
this 20-hour live event annually, often spending
up to a week in the province pre-show to promote
and engage the local community. Over $65
million dollars has been raised via the Kinsmen
Telemiracle since Mahood began co-hosting, an
impressive figure given the province’s one millionperson population.
HANK SMITH
AWARD OF
EXCELLENCE
Deane
Cameron
To commemorate his indelible impact on the
Canadian country music industry and his tenacity
for finding and mentoring great talent, Deane
Cameron is the 2014 recipent of the Hank Smith
Award of Excellence.
Cameron’s storied career began humbly, as he
worked his way up through the ranks of the music
industry. He eventually made history when he
became the youngest Canadian President of a
major music label in 1988.
In addition, Mahood is a long-time supporter of
Canada’s Food Banks, Corus Feeds Kids and
Tom Jackson’s The Huron Carole. She is also
the national spokesperson for the Pink Mitten
Campaign which supports breast cancer research,
a role she has happily filled since 2010. There
are at least a dozen other organizations and
programs she continues to support and make
time for, making her a worthy recipient of this
CCMA Award of Achievement.
He has played a significant role in the careers of
such Canadian artists as Susan Aglukark, Terri
Clark, Tom Cochrane, Stompin’ Tom Connors,
Rita MacNeil, John McDermott, Anne Murray,
The Rankin Family, Johnny Reid, Serena Ryder,
Buffy Sainte-Marie and many, many more. He
worked equally hard in developing international
musicians in Canada. Cameron has contributed to
the soundtrack of nearly four eras of great music
for Canadians.
During his 24 years as President of EMI Music
Canada, Cameron was a trailblazer when it
came to signing labels for distribution. In 2010
he became a Member of the Order of Canada
for his contributions to the arts and music, and
in 2011 he was the recipient of the Walt Grealis
Special Achievement Award at the JUNO Awards.
Cameron was on the CCMA Board of Directors for
12 years, has served on the CARAS board since
1985, played a key role in the development of
MusiCounts and currently sits on the board for
the Unison Benevolent Fund. It is for all of these
reasons, and more, that the CCMA is proud to
bestow upon Cameron a well-deserved Award of
Achievement.
