THE MISSION OF CHRIST CHURCH is
to bring all persons to the saving
knowledge of Jesus Christ through Word,
Sacraments, and instruction, as taught
through the Episcopal tradition, that all
may know the joy and grace of faith, and
to share that grace through outreach.

A Rule You Will Want to Keep
Lent is looming. Seems like Christmas just happened, and I guess it did. Since Easter is
almost as early as is possible this year—March 27, while March 22 is the earliest—here (in
January!) we find ourselves contemplating the annual conundrum: what will I give up for Lent?
Take heart, dear parishioner, I have just the thing. It’s actually not something for you to give up.
It is something for you to take on. But don’t worry, it is something that will be for you
individually, not a one-size-fits-all kind of thing. I am talking about creating for yourself a rule
of life.
“Oh no,” you’re thinking, “I hate rules. They’re so restricting.” Well, it’s not that kind
of rule. In the monastic tradition, the Rule is the thing that gives shape and form to life. It
comes from the Latin root regula, which is the same root as ‘regulate’ or ‘regular’. A rule of life
defines how folks in a monastery spend their time; it lays out how work, rest, prayer, worship,
study, and socializing will take place. Obviously, if you were joining a monastery or convent
you’d be expected to live according to their rule. Again, I know what you’re thinking: “I’m not
joining a monastery or a convent.” You’re right. So, this Lent you are invited to work on
creating a rule of life for yourself, just for you, not for anybody else, a rule that fits your life,
your personality, your interests, your goals, your needs.
“How do I do that?” I’m glad you asked. This will be the topic of our Friday Pizza
Nights this Lent. We’ll be using a program called Growing a Rule of Life. The image employed
here is that God is the master gardener, and we are the plants that God is nurturing. Certain
plants need some kind of trellis, something to support the plant as it grows in order for it to get
enough sunlight, water, air, etc. Without the proper support these plants, such as beans or
tomatoes, don’t grow properly. They don’t produce their fruit. They don’t thrive at all. The
personal rule of life is intended to be that which gives structure to your life, just like a trellis, to
support you so that you can grow in God’s grace as God intends.
This Lent instead of stressing over what to give up, take a journey with us through this
process known as Growing a Rule of Life. This Lenten work could bear fruit for you, not just
for the rest of the year, but for the rest of your life. You can give up chocolate next year if you
want. This year invest a little time and energy to work on your relationships with God, with
others, with yourself, and with God’s creation. You won’t regret it. Join us on Friday evenings
6:00 to 7:30 starting February 19. I’ll bring the pizza.

CONGRATULATIONS
To Betsy Warne whose first grandchild, Gillian Elizabeth Ferguson, was born
on January 8, 2016 to Betsy’s daughter, Cate and son-in-law, Brian Ferguson. Gillian weighed in at 8 lbs.,
6 oz. and 21 1/2 “ long. Everyone in the family is thrilled with Gillian’s birth and all are doing well.
Our Christ Church family extends their sympathy to Joan Gurniak and her family on
the death of Joan’s husband, Ted, who passed on January 19. A celebration of Ted’s
life was held in the church on January 27 with burial to be at a later date in the church
yard cemetery. A reception, hosted by the Episcopal Church Women, followed in the
Great Hall.
“May his soul and the souls of all the departed, by the mercy of God, rest in peace.”

Episcopal Church Women ~ After a busy holiday season, ECW met in January for our
"giving" meeting when we vote on which charities in the diocese to support. We enjoyed a
presentation by Elaine Wyant on Saint Lydia and a delicious dessert and fresh fruit thanks to
Ellen Johnson. Though January and February are generally the slower months for ECW, this
February is an exception. We'll be busy with the Bishop's visit and confirmation on February 7.
As always we'll host a reception following the 10:30 AM service. Meeting-wise, we'll continue
with our study on Saints. Come join us on the third Tuesday of each month at 11:30 AM in the
Great Hall of All Saints Hall.
Episcopal Church Men
Shrove Tuesday Pancake & Chili Dinner ~ February 9
You can go to any church on Shrove Tuesday to get pancakes, but ask them for chili, and they’ll
say, “Huh!?!” The Episcopal Church Men’s group will once again present their Shrove Tuesday
Pancake & Chili dinner from 5:30 to 7:00 PM on Tuesday, February 9. Cost will be $7 per
person, or $25 for a family, for all you can eat pancakes, sausage, chili, and drinks. Plan on
joining us, and bring a friend! Look for signup sheets in the Communications Center to help set
up, cook, and clean up. The youth group will be helping to serve the meal. Bring your palms
from last Palm Sunday to be burned for the ashes to be imposed the next day on Ash Wednesday.
Annual Episcopal Visitation
February 7, 2016
The Rt. Rev. Susan E. Goff, bishop suffragan of the Diocese of Virginia, will
preside and preach at the 10:30 service on the morning of Sunday, February 7.
She will celebrate confirmations, receptions, and reaffirmations. The service will
be followed by a special fellowship hour in honor of the confirmands and the
bishop. Our annual visit from a bishop reminds us that we are part of a Church
that is bigger than ourselves. We are part of the greater Body of Christ that has
influence and challenges beyond any we know of here in Spotsylvania. The bishop
not only represents the diocese and the concerns of the diocese to us, but she
represents us and our concerns to the greater Church as well. You may notice that
this will be Super Bowl Sunday. We promise that if you come to church in the
morning you will be home in plenty of time to enjoy the game.
Ash Wednesday Services, February 10
Ashes are a symbol of our humility, penance, and
mortality. We begin our Lenten journey toward the
joyous season of Easter with Ash Wednesday on
February 10.
There will be two opportunities for
worship, at Noon and 7:30 PM. At both services ashes
will be imposed on those who wish to receive them.
This is an appropriate way to begin the holy season of
Lent during which we prepare for Easter through selfdenial, prayer and fasting.

Looking for a Lenten discipline? How about daily Morning Prayer? The morning office is read in
the church every Monday through Thursday at 8:30 AM. Please join us. Maybe come one day a
week, like every Tuesday. Maybe commit to every day for one week. Or maybe try to be there
every day during the whole season. Who knows, you may like it so much that you continue to come
even after Lent is over. It has happened before.
Healing Prayer Ministry Team training will be held Monday mornings February 15, 22, and
29 beginning with Morning Prayer with Fr. Jeff at 8:30 and ending at 11:00 AM. Please see Fr. Jeff
or Deacon Margaret for information and/or to sign up. If this is not a good time for you and you
would like to be part of the healing team, please let us know and another training session will be
offered in the future.
