The Faces You Can Trust
An Inside Look at A-A Island Auto Rental, MV Auto Rental & Island E Bike Rental, a Family Run Local Business
Chaiel Schaffel
I
t’s a lot easier to notice the wind whipping
through your hair when you don’t have to pedal.
This is the philosophy of Bryan Nelson, A-A Island
Auto Rental, MV Auto Rental and Island Electric
Bike Rental, all local businesses that rent everything
from his new electric bicycles and Mini-Coopers, to
jeeps to minivans and Full Size SUVs. In existence
since before Google, A-A Island Auto Rental prides
itself on how long its been around - and on the quality of its service. Nearly 20 years ago, an early version
of the rental business that serves the island today
opened up in Edgartown. The company has grown
considerably since then. A-A Island Rentals and it’s
sister brand, MV Auto Rentals now operates now
owns and operates four locations, in Edgartown,
Oak Bluffs, Vineyard Haven, and at the airport.
Bryan generously let me take one his newly purchased e-bikes for a ride around Vineyard Haven.
After exiting the shop and passing through the chaotic ‘Five Corners’ intersection in downtown Vineyard Haven, we were off. Nelson first led me along
a busy street by foot, and, after getting my bearings,
we speedily made our way to a steep hill that I could
now climb with remarkable ease. The experience
was exhilarating, as the bike gave a smooth and satisfying boost with every every stroke of the pedal.
Bryan shared behind-the-scenes details on his new
fleet of electric bicycles. The e-bikes have a built-in
pedal assist function which helps the rider pedal
uphill, and adds extra power to the rider’s pedaling.
Nelson told This Week that the bikes were a hot
item, and that not many other businesses had them
yet. With a range of 20 miles, the e-bikes accompany a wide variety of bikers. If the battery runs out,
riders need not despair: it can
be pedaled exactly like a regular
bicycle. Island Electric Bike &
AVIVA Bike is holding a demo
day for the new e-bikes on July
11th and 12th, where you can
come and feel the wind in your
own hair by giving these new
bikes a test drive.
Bryan’s business exists on the
solid pillars of two core values;
good service, and a friendly
staff with familiar faces. Since
their early days in Edgartown, it
was the service that made A-A
...and cool
signs for your
Vineyard
Home!
Large Selection of Sugar Free,
Vegan & Gluten Free
Chocolates and Candy
Island Auto Rental stand out. Hotels in and around
Edgartown started using the company close to their
inception. Bryan credits his success on the fact that
his company was consistently clean and dropped off
in a timely manner. The business also thrives on a
loyal, family oriented customer base. Thirty-eight
percent of the company’s business comes from repeat customers, and Nelson noted that the
customers like to see
“the friendly and familiar faces
that work here.”
Over the years, Bryan and his team have developed
a way for renting day-trippers to see most of the
Island’s most notable spots. Whimsically nicknamed
“The Three Hour Tour,” the renter drives from
Vineyard Haven to the Gay Head cliffs, and around
the entire island to hit the most popular spots with
enough time to catch the 6:00 ferries.
A-A Island Auto Rentals is a reliable, flexible and
customer friendly business that is dedicated, above
all, to you; the consumer.
More information about A-A Island Auto Rentals
can be found online at http://www.mvautorental.
com/ or by calling 508-696-5300.
Electric Bikes are available for rent at $39 for a half
day (2:00 PM-6:00PM) and $69 for a full day, or by
the week, while car prices range from $79 to $249 a

Dirk Leisure
Each production night for many many years
the staff of This Week on MV have slaved to put
this paper together while staying energized on
dinner provided to us by Edgartown Pizza. We
wanted to get a little info from our production
night sponsor so we stopped in and asked Danny a few questions.
This Week – What is the one thing that you
wish more people knew about Edgartown Pizza?
DS – We have done Seafood Pizza, and Portugese Pizza – so many that nothing really comes
across as not doable anymore
Danny Segal – First and foremost I wish people
knew more about our variety. We are so much
more than Pizza. We have great stuff for the
entire family from 2years old to 100, from Summer Salads to teriyaki steak tips. Our kids menu
is amazing too, nothing over $4.95
TW Where do you go to eat out when your not
working?
TW – Whats the secret to making a great Pizza?
TW – If you could dine with any 3 people from
history, who would they be?
DS – Good high end ingredients and lots and
lots of love!
DS – Albert Einstein, Barack Obama, and Jack
Nicholson.
TW – What is the strangest request you have
ever received for toppings?
You’re on vacation...why should you carry your bags?
Look out for Johnny Showtime on the bag cab hanging by the ferry docks. He will deliver your bags to
any OB area hotels. We hear if you tip him extra he
will fan you with leaves by the beach and feed you
grapes from the vine.
DS – I love going to the Lookout Tavern in
Oak Bluffs. They have a Lobster Dinner that is
fantastic

Vineyard Arts Project
Edgartown
Now in its fifth year, New Writers. New Plays.
is Vineyard Arts Project’s annual residency
program that fosters the development of new
works by emerging playwrights. “There’s
a House” written by Shaina Taub and Kim
Rosenstock and directed by Carolyn Cantor is
the story of one young woman’s physical and
spiritual journey home. An original folktale,
loosely inspired by the traditional Francis
James Child ballad, “The House Carpenter”
each chapter in this mystical travelogue enters
a new musical environment, with an ensemble
of actor/musicians creating the soundtrack for
the story.
NEW WRITERS. NEW PLAYS. Naperville
6:30 pm
“Naperville” written by Mat Smart and directed by Adam Knight tells the story after Candice
goes blind, when her 30-year-old son moves
back home to Naperville to help her transition
into her new life. A romantic comedy about
sight, an old high school crush, curfews for
your mother, and how beauty reveals itself in
the suburbs.
NEW WRITERS. NEW PLAYS. Small Mouth
Sounds
9:00 pm
“Small Mouth Sounds” written by Bess Wohl
and directed by Rachel Chavkin tells the story
of six refugees from city life embarking on a
week-long silent retreat deep in the woods
guided by a renowned new age guru. As they
begin to confront what ails them, from heartbreak to illness to overactive libidos, their vows
of silence bump up against their aching need
to connect-- and the ever-present threat of
bears. Funny, strange and provocative, SMALL
MOUTH SOUNDS is a new play that asks how
we solve life’s biggest questions when words
aren’t enough.

Shopping and a Show
Trader Fred’s new Vineyard Haven location houses more than just amazing deals.
Brittney Wright
T
hink about it: the first thing you do after picking up an
item that has caught your eye in whatever store you may be
shopping in, is check the price. In a dream world, the number on the tag would be even lower than our expectations,
which makes you jump for joy and rush to the cash register, overjoyed at how astonishing it is that you just scored
the ultimate deal. Whether you love shopping or not, one
thing everyone can agree on is that there is a certain thrill
in finding that ultimate deal; imagine coming across that
one leftover shirt on the sale rack that’s just your size, or
getting a deep discount on those shoes you’ve been wanting for forever. It feels so good you almost might want to
give yourself a pat on the back.
Amongst the trove of upscale boutiques and
quaint, but pricey, store fronts that dominate the shopping scene of so much of this island, there does exist that
‘dream world’ for those who want to flip over that price
tag and see an affordable price, instead of getting sticker
shock –– the island-famous Trader Fred’s in Vineyard Haven. While Trader Fred’s has always been known for deep
discounts, the new Vineyard Haven location includes
a unique feature –– an adjoining art gallery which also
functions as a real estate office. Whether you’re dropping
in to bargain hunt or searching for some seriously impressive art, this location offers a winning combination of
shopping and a show.
“If you’re used to seeing
a shirt at a speciality store for
$45, we have it for $11,” says
the one and only Trader Fred
himself.
And it’s true; Trader Fred’s newest location in Vineyard
Haven places a bigger emphasis on clothing, and their
selection includes many well-known brand names that
are otherwise almost impossible to get on the island. Here
you’ll find unique organic t-shirts, right next to the huge
collection of footwear for both men and women, from
sandals to Croc-like styles. There is an equally impressive display of sunglasses, ranging from the more stylish
designs to funky
colored frames.
A trip to Martha’s
Vineyard isn’t
complete without
that indispensable
island souvenir;
from t-shirts to
stickers, Trader
Fred’s has got
you covered. In
addition to clothing, this location
carries a few
beach essentials,
like sunblock and
beach towels. And
best of all, it’s all
at prices that won’t give you sticker shock.
Unique to the new Vineyard Haven location is an
adjoining art gallery and real estate office. “Both require
professional expertise, so they were a natural match,” says
Trader Fred. And indeed they are. The gallery features
many talented artists, including a few locals who you may
or may not already know of; Nathan Sheppard, an incredible painter, and Brandon Fisher, a talented old-world
style painter, are both local islanders who are featured in
the space. Richard Dunbrack, who creates salvaged art
sculptures that are both eye-catching and mind-bending
in their intriguing designs, and his daughter Sydney, an
artist who
masterfully
paints and
sketches
incredibly
intricate and
detailed
pieces of
art, are
both locals
who also have pieces in the gallery. Also housed inside the
gallery are the offices of Jane Brown Real Estate Associates, who have been operating on the island since 1968.
This newest Vineyard Haven location is something we can’t wait to see more of; with prices that make
you want to smile and seriously cool art, there isn’t any
reason not to stop by. After flipping through racks and
racks of brand-name clothing, at very non-brand-name
clothing prices, you’ll want to give Trader Fred that pat on
TW
the back.

Celebrate the Fourth
Style!
The Vineyard offers numerous 4th of July activities for people of all ages and interests.
Kendra Mills, Staff Writer
The Martha’s Vineyard community kicks off the an-
nual Fourth of July celebrations with a parade on the
main street of Edgartown. The island is swarmed during
these two upcoming weeks and the very height of summer activity culminates in downtown Edgartown.
The celebrations are exceptionally island-oriented. Past
years have included participants from long standing
island camps such as Felix Neck Wildlife Sanctuary’s
Summer Camp, Sail Martha’s Vineyard, and Camp
Jabberwocky. The holiday is a commemoration of national independence but possesses a decidedly intimate
and comfortable quality. Of course, spectators are also
given the chance to recognize military personnel from
the island’s residents.
Past highlights include, the historic fire engine, drawn
by the strength of runners, displaying how fires were
dealt with many, many years ago; gregarious congregations of island music, including an drum band
that often inspires impromptu dancing on part of the
spectators; real dancers, performing routines choreographed for the parade; and countless handcrafted
floats carrying children with flags and candy.
The parade is decidedly family-oriented, but after
its culmination most everyone barbeques and finds
a place to enjoy the fireworks show put on over the
Edgartown Harbor. Edgartown Meat and Fish offers an
excellent selection of goods for a Fourth of July picnic
on the beach and several restaurants and hotels host
parties.
When describing the festivities of this years
Fourth of July, parade director, Joe Sollitto, proudly
states,
and often last for over an hour. The rain date is the
following day. You don’t want to miss the town’s transformation into a party with streets and beaches being generally overrun with people having a good time
.
TW
“Ninety nine percent of the
people who participate in the
parade are people that either
live here year round or have
summer homes here.
I know we have two bands that come from off island
but thats about it. Everybody else is a local participant.”
However, if some feel as though the intensity of the
festivities are not to their liking, Murdick’s Fudge hosts
an annual five mile road race to benefit Big Brothers/
Big Sisters of Martha’s Vineyard. Alternatively, one can
find the Vineyard Streetball Classic 3 on 3 basketball
tournament at Niantic Park in Oak Bluffs.
To catch the aforementioned Edgartown festivities,
plan to arrive well before five and be prepared to walk
from your parking place. The fireworks begin at 8:45
The New Cool MV Logo to be Seen Wearing
SLIP 77
There are plenty of well established Vineyard products and logo’s that are worn far and wide but for the locals and the passionate Vineyarder’s these logo’s have become a bit main stream. We at This Week On MV are recommending that you all go
the store SLIP 77 in Oak Bluffs and Buy something with their very cool logo on it.
The logo and name are connected to the 1977 attempt by the Vineyard to secede from the state of MA. As told on their website www.slip77.com,
“The island proved its popularity in its rebellion, having been propositioned by no less than 5 states – Connecticut, Rhode
Island, New Hampshire, Vermont and Hawaii – to join them. While the island never actually became the 51st State of the
Union, to this day it remains a favorite destination for people from all over the world.”
That, combined with the incredibly comfortable and stylish cloths that they carry is why we LOVE this logo. Check them out

A New Collaborative Work by Local Authors Paints a Picture of Martha’s Vineyard in World War II
Chaiel Schaffel
A modern day visitor to the Gay
Head cliffs may not know that underneath one’s feet, buried in sand, lies
an abandoned military bunker. The
Martha’s Vineyard of 1939-1942 was
a far cry from the balmy, tourist-centric island we see today. Co-authors
Thomas Dresser, Herb Foster, and Jay
Schofield have decided to pry open
a window into World War Two era
Vineyard by penning their first collaborative work together, Martha’s
Vineyard in World War II.
In the book, the authors
discuss both the physical and social
effects of World War II on the
Island. This Week recently attended
a presentation by the three authors
on their book. There, the authors
discussed a few of the notable topics
in the new work. Among these
talking points were the abandoned
military structures on the island,
German U-Boat involvement in
Martha’s Vineyard, Army/Navy military drills. The social impact of the
war on the citizens of the island was
also discussed, as they experienced
a world war living in the test bed of
the United States military.
Tom Dresser noted in the
presentation that the East Coast
Command set up two military bunkers on the Island, both at Gay Head.
One of the bunkers has since fallen
into the sea, and the other was filled
with sand in the 1950’s. Herb Foster
added that the remains of the signal
and radio office on Peaked Hill, now
known as Radar Hill, are still visible,
while the site itself has been turned
into a Coast Guard run rescue station.
It may come as a surprise
to some that in the early years of
the war, there was high German
submarine involvement off of the
Martha’s Vineyard coast. Dresser
shared that throughout the war, a
total of 19 different submarines circled the island, and at one point, 15
submarines menaced the Vineyard
at one time. In order to train for the
invasion of Normandy, or D-Day,
the military ran training drills in and
around Martha’s Vineyard. Some
soldiers were shipped in by amphibious vehicles and ships, while some
parachuted in throughout the course
of the mock invasions.
The social impact of the
war on Martha’s Vineyard left a
changed island in its wake. The small,
isolated Vineyard of the past was
opened to new frontiers as servicemen streamed in from around the
country, and brought new cultures
and ideas with them. To ready
themselves for war, the people of the
Vineyard participated in readiness
drills in the event of a bombing
run by the Germans and rationing
was practiced heavily. Jay Schofield
mentioned that the war created
collaboration between the citizens on
the island. Specifically, the women of
different towns on the island would
volunteer to help other women when
they needed extra hands to sew blan-
kets for soldiers. Civilian spotters
were set up to report any disturbance
or possible U-Boat sighting.
The Co-authors kindly
agreed to sit down with This Week
and discuss themselves and their
book in an interview.
TW: What do you think was your
motivation behind writing this book?
What made you want to tell this
story?
TD: To be honest, in the beginning, I
wasn’t all that interested in it. It was
the other two guys in the beginning.
But Jay had written about it in the
past, and Herb wanted to write it.
That, combined with my publisher,
made me want to do it. We each
contributed something to the puzzle.
HF: I went to the library, and I was
looking under Martha’s Vineyard,
and there was just nothing there
about World War II! That’s what
made me want to write it, I think.
JS: It was the letters from my father
and uncles during the war that made
me want to write it.
TW: In what way do you think the
war changed the face of the vineyard
and the lives of its citizens?
TD: There was a very major impact
with all of the servicemen on the
island that changed the island from a
very isolationist place to a more open
one. Young servicemen from Kansas
and the [heartland] brought an
awareness to the Vineyard that other
things were going on in the country.
HF: It changed the Vineyard irrevocably, I think.
JS: Yes, it taught that you don’t need
to go to war to help out the cause.
Everybody did their part, and it
brought an awful lot of servicemen
to the Vineyard after the war. They
told their story and popularized the
Vineyard in the country.
TW: What do you think was the hardest part of writing this book?
TD: There was so much information, it was hard to zero in and limit
ourselves. We had to cut probably
five thousand words off of our manuscript.
JS: Hardest part about the book was
scaling back on the information
received. The flood of publicity we
received after we started to tour contributed to the information we had.
HF: It was a different America back
then. All of the information was hard
to handle. We’re even talking about
making a second edition!

For the Day’s Catch, Go To Edgartown Seafood
Where the Locals Go For All Things Seafood (and a Little Sweetness, Too!)
Alexandra Bassett
W
hat do Baked Stuffed Lobsters, Yellowfin Tuna
and Deep Dish Apple Pie have in common? Edgartown Seafood, of course. Located at 138 Cooke
Street just off of Upper Main Street (catty-corner to
the Mobil station), this tiny, family-owned, seafood
market packs a big whallop, offering everything
from the freshest, locally-caught fish and take-out
you can find, to mouth-watering, out-of-the-oven,
deep dish fruit pies of all kinds.
“You gotta eat fish to catch fish,” says proprietor and
islander Danny Larsen, who used to fish himself.
“We pride ourselves on offering fresh seafood, and
all the best local fishermen bring us what they’ve
caught.” From mild Codfish and tasty-sweet StripedBass, to sushi-grade Yellowtail and Yellowfin Tuna,
the day’s catch here is plentiful and varied, and also
one of the best deals in town.
“We’re a local favorite,” says chef Johnny Petrosinelli,
“because our prices are good and everything’s fresh
– our baked, stuffed lobsters are right out of the
waters of MV, and we even make our own tartar and
cocktail sauce. Plus, customers can call us 45-minutes before stopping by and have their lobsters
boiled and ready to go with warm butter and all the
fixings.”
In fact, Edgartown Seafood is a lobster-lover’s paradise: take your pick of live lobsters, Lobster Rolls,
Lobster Mac ‘n Cheese, or Baked Stuffed Lobsters
stuffed with scallops, shrimp, and lobster claws
in a sweet potatoe and vidalia onion base, topped
with a creamy, Newburg-Alfredo sauce. There’s also
steamers, mussels, and littlenecks boiled to order or
fresh on half-shell, and delicious, freshly-made dips
and pates including smoked Bluefish pate, jalapeno
crab dip, and tuna spread, perfect for the beach and
picnics.
Not hooked yet? Well, that’s just the beginning of
the take-out menu. Whether you like classic New
England like creamy clam chowder, stuffed quahogs,
and crabcakes; a little bit of Tex-Mex like decadent
seafood chimchangas and fish tacos with roasted red
pepper aioli; or southern-style fried oyster, shrimp,
and scallop Po’ Boy sandwiches on fresh baguette,
you can find it here. There’s also kid-friendly items
like Chicken Tenders with Fries and Captain Crunch
Fish Sticks, plus a Buffalo Chicken Wrap or Classic
Chicken Sandwich for those who prefer land food.
To top it all off, Johnny makes fresh, deep-dish,
fruit pies of every kind daily, from Dutch Apple and
Blueberry, to Key Lime and Apple Cranberry, that
sell out as fast as he can make them. He’ll even make
a custom pie. “All a customer has to do is call us
24-hours in advance, and if we can find the ingredients, we’ll make it,” says Johnny.
So whether you’re a die-hard seafood or pie-lover
alike, or just enjoy taking in some local flavor while
exploring the island, Edgartown Seafood is must-visit spot bound to satisfy your summer seafood cravings and more.

Oak Bluffs - 3 Canonicus Avenue $799,000
Located within 100 feet of one of the Vineyard’s top beaches and
with dramatic views of Vineyard sound all the way to Cape Pogue,
this property is not what it appears! Originally built in 1873 this
home has serviced many generations of the same family. In 1997
through 2003 an extensive renovation has been completed by
the owner who is a successful Island contractor. He started with
the removal of the old and the careful installation of a new title 5
septic. From there the home was re-suspended with new concrete
piers and supports. Rather than loose the old world charm of the
interior, all the walls were insulated on the outside of the home
with rigid foam, a new layer of sheathing, new shingles and new
windows. This type of renovation is more intricate and saves all
the interior space. The roof was re-sheathed, completely covered
in WR Grace Ice and Water shield and new Architectural roof
shingles installed. All this has created a home that still retains the
Old World charm yet is now structurally sound and insulated for
year round use! With the home warm and sound a much needed
garage with storage up above was added. Enjoy a glass of wine
with friends on your private widow’s walk pondering the stars
over the ocean and wake up to the sound and smell of the ocean,
make yourself a cup of coffee, walk to your morning swim and
enjoy your coffee, still hot on your own private covered porch,
because you are just steps to the water!

TALK
Aboard the Goodship Lollipop
Questions on a Kaleidoscope of Candy
Chaiel Schaffel
Walking into the Good Ship Lollipop on Circuit
Avenue of Oak Bluffs is a sensory delight. Before getting a good view of one’s surroundings, the scent of
vanilla extract and childhood nostalgia delights the
nose. Then, a virtual kaleidoscope of candy opens
into view, spilling over the shelves in every direction
and cascading color and light all over the homey
storefront. This Week interviewed Marguerite Cook,
owner of the Good Ship Lollipop. Here’s what she
said:
What made you want to get into the candy
business?
I used to work at the county tax office, and we always
had candy on the counter. When I retired after 23
years, people I would see in the street, and they
would always say, “there’s no candy for us any more!”
And I’d say,
“I’ll open up a candy store-but
you’ll have to pay me for it!”
When we were dismantling my family house after
my mother passed away, my sister found a picture
of my mother in her coveralls, holding a doll and
a big swirly lollipop! And that’s when I decided it
was meant to be. That was in 2005, and I moved
to this storefront in 2006. This used to be a candy
store called “Hilliards Kitchen-View Candies.” Mr.
Stacey, who owned the old business came to me and
asked me if I would move my candy store to the old
Hilliard building. If I would, he said, he would loan
me his daughter Brenda to teach me, and and loan
me his tempering kettles for chocolate, until I could
get my own.
If you had to choose one, and only one item
from your store, what would you eat?
I would eat...well, it’s a toss-up between the milk
chocolate pistachios and the almond turtle with sea
salt.
What inspired your store’s name?
I live on an island, they were decommissioning the
steamship Islander when I started, and I was a big
fan of Shirley Temple. One of her songs was, “The
Good Ship Lollipop,” and that’s where the name
came from.
Can any of your customers see over the counter?
I have trouble seeing over the counter! The children
seem to stretch their necks and see-and if they can’t,
there always seems to be a teenager or adult to help
them. They like seeing the candy-we carry dark,
milk, and white chocolate here, along with large selection of sugar free, vegan & gluten free chocolates
and candy.
Are you friendly with the local dentist?
Very! I’ve brought him a box of chocolates before!
The Good Ship Lollipop candy story can be found
on 61 Circuit Avenue in Oak Bluffs.
