Bike Path
Bike Route
Biking is a popular way to explore the Vineyard. An extensive
network of bicycle paths and routes links most down-Island
visitor destinations. There are no bike paths in Chilmark or
Aquinnah; riding conditions there are challenging with narrow,
curved, hilly roads. Bikes can be rented on the Island. Two
bikes can be carried on the front of each VTA bus.
Use bicycle paths whenever possible. On roads, ride single
file, on the pavement, close to the side of the road, avoiding
sandy shoulders. Be careful, bikes skid easily on sand. Leave
gaps to allow passing cars to pull in.

Mopeds
Mopeds can be rented on the Island. Exercise caution
if you choose to rent a moped since even the main
roads are narrow and congested; up-Island roads are
especially narrow, curved and hilly.
Ride single file, on the pavement, close to the side of
the road, avoiding sandy shoulders. Be careful, mopeds
skid easily on sand. Do not use bike paths.

Park & Ride
To avoid in-town congestion, use the
Park-and-Ride facilities located on
the outskirts of Edgartown and
Vineyard Haven. Daily parking is free
and the VTA operates frequent, free
shuttle service right into town. The
Tisbury (Vineyard Haven) Park and
Ride meets arriving and departing
SSA Vineyard Haven ferries. Note signs
advising of parking fees for longerterm parking.

Roads with summer-only buses shown in orange:
The Island offers reliable and affordable public transportation year round. Buses run on major
roads throughout the Island and may be flagged en route.
For in-season and off-season schedules:
• Pick up a map on any VTA bus, at the SSA,
Chamber of Commerce or Edgartown
Visitors Center.
• Visit online at www.vineyardtransit.com
• Call the VTA at 508-693-9440.
Passes:
The VTA offers cost-effective travel passes.
1,3 & 7-day passes are available on the bus,
or at the SSA and Edgartown Visitors Center.
Annual and 31-day passes are available at the
Edgartown Visitors Center, VTA office, and,
during the summer, from ticket sellers at the
OB and VH SSA bus stops.
G Gas Station
Taxi Stand
Taxi Stands
Taxis are plentiful on the Vineyard.
They can be found at the stands
indicated on this map or you can
telephone one of the many taxi
companies. In general, several
parties heading in the same
direction share a taxi van that
charges a fixed fee per party for
a given trip. Prices vary by company.
Vineyard taxis are not metered.

Martha’s Vineyard, New England’s largest island, was formed by glacial
action 10,000 years ago. Legend has it that the Vineyard was given its
name in 1602 by Bartholomew Gosnold who named it for one of his
little daughters and the wild grapes he found here.

The nature destinations numbers show the location
of parking close to the heads of walking trails.
Terrain can range from flat, soft sand to steep,
rocky outcroppings so wear solid footwear. If you
participate in outdoor activities, protect yourself
from ticks (e.g. wearing long pants and socks
when walking in tall grass, beach grass, or woods;
checking your body and clothes afterwards, etc.).
Further information about these and other nature
sites is available from various Vineyard
conservation organizations.
