CANTERBURY, the town.
11
Canterbury, historic town and surrounding city in the administrative and historic
county of Kent, south eastern England.
The site of the town of Canterbury, which has been occupied since pre-Roman times,
was in ancient times the mouth of the River Stour, which broadened into an estuary
extending to the Wantsum Channel, the strait that once separated the Isle of Thanet
from the mainland.
The Roman town of Durovernum Cantacorum was established on the site after the invasion
of Claudius in 43 A.D. It was connected to London ( 55miles - 89km northwest ) and
to Dover ( 16miles – 26km southeast ).
The Town Wall was built by the Romans in about 200 and rebuilt in the Middle Ages :
parts of it still stand. Of the six medieval entrances to the town, only Westgate survives.

Maidstone : Leeds Castle and Park
A Norman Castle built on two islands on a lake and converted to a palace by Henry VIII.
It is often referred to as “ The Loveliest Castle in the World “ !
Over the centuries the castle has withheld sieges ; hosted the medieval Royal Courts of
Europe ; been a prison for witches, Kings and prisoners of war ; a munitions store and a
Hospital ; and welcomed some of the key figures in English history from Henry VIII to
Winston Churchill.
The castle has always been a palace to entertain and impress, with every generation leaving
its mark. Today’s interiors are the result of the massive refurbishment by European designers
throughout the 1920s and 30s for its last private owner, Lady Baillie.
