Aloha Mililani!
It’s September and I
hope the summer was a
pleasant one for you and
your family. Kids are back
at school now and our
normal routine is back.
My family and I traveled
some this past summer.
We headed back to the
east coast to visit my wife’s aging and ailing
parents. We do this every summer now because
it is not possible for them to travel to Hawaii any
more, it’s just too far.
Now traveling has two major components
associated with it that are relatively new for me.
For one, our son is now 16 and we treat a trip
somewhere as an opportunity to take college tours.
We have been on 4 in the last 6 months and there
are more to come, that is for sure. We have agreed
to send him to a college that is one flight away.
He is our only child and if we need to get to him
quickly we can. It just makes us feel better. I would
file this under “My Kid is Smarter than I Give Him
Credit For” because he was quick to point out that
Hawaiian now flies nonstop to Australia and New
York, so they should still qualify for the one flight
rule. I have since modified the rule until he comes
up with another loop hole!
The other moving part that I have to deal with
after a trip, is detox. See, I have to watch what I
eat—at least according to my doctor and his blood
pressure machine! It’s not easy to watch your diet
when you are on the road and eating out 2 or 3
times a day. So when I return, it’s back to yogurt
and fruit for breakfast and a healthy dinner. My
lunch is not always the best but I do try to make the
best choices I can.
This all started about 18 months ago when my
doctor told me that if I don’t control my blood
pressure with diet and exercise, he was going to
have to put me on even more hypertension meds.
So I set out, with my wife’s help, to cut as much
sodium from my diet as possible. You see, they
call Hypertension the silent killer. My heart doctor
explained it this way, “you feel fine and then you’re
dead”. That was enough motivation for me!
So I thought I’d share a few of my health tips. When
I go to a restaurant to eat, I look up their nutritional
information on my smartphone so I can make an
educated selection. And I always read the labels on
packaged food. It was shocking to learn how much
salt is added to the foods we eat (which is why I try
to avoid processed foods as much as possible). For
instance, a “healthy” bread will have about 150mg
of sodium per slice. Make a sandwich and without
anything on it, you already start with 300mg of
sodium. Add cold cuts, cheese and condiments and
you can easily surpass your recommended daily
intake in just one sandwich! But my wife can bake
a whole loaf of bread that has less than 20 mg of
sodium in the whole loaf! She has even got it down
to 0 for a loaf of very good tasting bread.
So you have to work at it and you may need help,
but watching my sodium resulted in lower blood
pressure, 20 pounds lighter and a better night’s
sleep. Overall I’m much healthier and this was
all achieved with diet and exercise, and a loving
spouse!
Aloha,
Bob Barrett

Paving the Way for
Seniors and Caregivers
St. Francis Healthcare System provides quality
care wherever it is needed. This 130-plus year
legacy of caring began with Saint Marianne Cope
and the Sisters of St. Francis, who willingly came
to Hawaii to serve those afflicted with Hansen’s
disease, ready to break through barriers and
with a hunger to serve others.
Although St. Francis Healthcare System no
longer operates hospitals today, that same
legacy of caring continues. St. Francis offers inhome Bathing Services, Adult Day Care in Ewa
and in Manoa and Home Hospice Care, serving
Hawaii families islandwide, from Waianae to
Mililani to Hawaii Kai.
St. Francis is also transforming its Liliha
campus into the St. Francis Kupuna Village,
an innovative, one-stop health and wellness
community for seniors and caregivers. The
campus features the Clarence T. C. Ching Villas,
a 119-bed skilled nursing facility, and in the
future will offer a senior community center, an
assisted living center, and senior independent
living.

“We’re concerned
the bathtub in my
parents’ home is
a potential hazard
as they age. What
can be done?”
One of the most
common bathroom
renovations
we
see is converting
a bathtub to a shower. Showers are
becoming extremely popular, not just
for aesthetic reasons, but for functional
purposes as well. We can usually make
the curb as high or low as the owner
requests, sometimes with no curb
at all, which is considered a roll-in
shower. If the owner is wheelchair
or walker bound, even the slightest
step over is dangerous. Showers can
be constructed from many different
types of materials such as tile, solid
surface (acr ylic), stone, or fiberglass.
Many owners request glass enclosures,
while other prefer curtains. How we
construct the shower is entirely up to
the homeowner(s).
“What other renovations should we
consider for my aging parents?”
There are many basic renovations that
are possible that can make any home
safer and more accessible. Here are a
few examples:
•
Install a wheelchair ramp or
stair way lift
•
Ensure all interior and exterior
stair ways have sturdy railings
•
Install and maintain smoke
detectors at all bedrooms and
hallways
•
Change your toilet to an ADA
compliant seat height
•
Change old door knobs to a lever
style
•
Fix old, cracked, or uneven
sidewalks around the house and
driveway
•
Install
and
maintain
air
conditioning units
•
Install grab bars throughout the
house, especially in or around the
shower or bathtub

Mililani, HI 96789.
SurePay Payment Plan - SurePay

a voided check with your form.
Pay Online - To safely pay your
assessment online, homeowners must
go through the official MTA website
(www.mililanitown.org). Once on the

amplified music are prohibited. All pavilion
users must exit the recreation center at the
end of the reservation. No refunds are given

Yard of the
Quarter Contest
The Mililani Town Association announced the
Yard of the Quarter Contest in January 2015.
In an effort to recognize homeowners who
keep their yards looking beautiful, which
enhances their neighborhood, our Covenants
Specialists will nominate front yards that
catch their eye. There will be six yards
nominated each quarter. The winner will
receive $400 in cash or cash equivalent from
the Yard of the Quarter sponsor. They will be
pictured in the MTA newsletter as follows:
January – nominees pictured
March – winner pictured
April – nominees pictured
June – winner pictured
July – nominees pictured
September – winner pictured
October – nominees pictured
December – winner pictured
There is no limit to the number of times a yard
can be nominated, but a yard can only win
once per year. To be eligible to be nominated,
the property must be owner occupied and
in good standing with the Association. In
addition, the owner must agree to have
a picture of their yard shown in the MTA
newsletter and on the MTA web site. The
winner will be published in a picture with the
Sponsor and nominating Covenant Specialist.
Good luck to all the nominees, and thank you
for helping to keep Mililani beautiful!

Monthly Covenants
Inspections
In an effort to be proactive with our
homeowners, MTA wants to inform
everyone of the areas that are being
inspected each month. The areas
highlighted on this map are the areas
scheduled for routine Covenant inspections
this month.
We hope to reduce the amount of violation
letters we have to send out by giving you
advanced notice of where we will be. We
are not trying to do our inspections in
secret. If you have any questions, please
feel free to ask. We are very friendly and
very willing to talk to you.
