The Battle of the Châteauguay National Historic
Site commemorates the importance of this feat in
Canadian military history, on October 26, 1813, and
the role that the combatants played in defending
Canada against the United States in the War of
1812. The interpretation centre, located on the actual
battlefield, comprises a lobby, two exhibition rooms
and an amphitheatre. An indoor lookout at the top
of the building offers a panoramic view. Using a
model representing the battlefield, the interpreterguides explain the highlights of the British victory over
the Americans.

The Beauharnois Generating Station was an
exceptional feat, the largest and most powerful station
of its kind from its construction in 1932 until 1979,
when the Robert-Bourassa station came on line at
James Bay. With its 38 turbine-generator sets lined
up over close to a kilometre, the venerable station
continues to play a key role in the Hydro-Québec
system. The Beauharnois station has been designated
a National Historic Site by the Historic Sites and
Monuments Board of Canada. You’ll be charmed by its
award-winning Art Deco architecture, and fascinated
by the story of its design and construction, begun with
pick and shovel over 80 years ago. You can start your
tour in the all-new interpretation centre, where you’ll
get to know the exceptional people involved, find out
why the station was built in three phases and learn
more about an amazing form of energy. Then tour
the station and explore one of the world’s largest runof-river generating stations, watch a turbine-generator
set in operation and gain a better grasp of electricity.

Park, Biophare is an Interpretation Center focused
on the development of human and environmental
factors associated with the Lake-St-Pierre Biosphere
Reserve. Recognized by UNESCO, Lake St-Pierre
represents an important international interest. Indeed,
this territory is as rich of its heritage that it is
of its exceptional natural environments. Biophare
also presents temporary exhibitions for the general
public and organizes cultural and educational
activities targeted for schools. Visitors can also
enjoy Randonnée nature, a cruise service that offers
unforgettable getaways. The cruise allows sometimes
to enter the “pays du Survenant” at the discovery of
the islands of Sorel and some other times, to dive at
the heart of the history of the region from the Richelieu

The Chambly Canal opened in 1843 and played a key
role in the forestry products industry in Quebec and
carrying lumber exports to the United States. Most of
the locks and bridges still operate manually, including
the step locks in Old Chambly, the only ones of their
kind in Quebec! There is also an exhibition in the
information centre on the history of the canal workers.

The Coteau-du-Lac National Historic Site highlights
the strategic, technological and economic importance
of the first attempts at building a canal to bypass
the St. Lawrence in the 18th and 19th centuries. It
looks at the role of the River in transportation and
communication with the interior of the continent, from
paleohistoric times to the present. As soon as you
arrive at the reception centre, interpreter-guides will
introduce you to the history of the site through the
permanent exhibition displaying the oldest artifacts
unearthed in the St. Lawrence Valley. On the site
itself, walking trails lead you to the archaeological
garden, where you can admire the remains of some
twenty military structures, the first lock canal built in
North America and the eight-sided blockhouse. The
peaceful countryside around Coteau-du-Lac promises
a delightfully relaxing time on the banks of the majestic
St. Lawrence River.

The Fort Chambly National Historic Site, located along
the Richelieu River in Chambly, introduces you to an
18th-century French fort. Built in 1711, this hulking
stone sentinel used to guard New France against
a possible British invasion. Restored in 1983, the
fort contains exhibitions relating the colony's key
moments. All summer long, several daily activities will
reveal the secrets of the military architecture, of the
French soldiers' uniform, and of the archaeology at the
fort. Moreover, every Sunday during the summer will
feature special activities, such as the presentation of
trades of yesteryear, military exercises, and musket
firing. The year of 2011 marks the 300th anniversary
of stone fort's construction. To celebrate the event, we
invite you to discover—or rediscover—this impressive
military building.

Fort Saint-Jean Museum offers about 350 years
of military history on the site of the Royal Military
College Saint-Jean, which witnessed the passage
of Amerindian warriors, French and British troops,
American revolutionaries, and several Canadian units.
Located alongside the Richelieu River, this site was
designated as a National Historic Site of Canada
because of the three forts it housed and of the major
role it played in the 1775 American invasion, during
which the fort withstood a 45-day siege. The Museum
retraces the history of this patrimonial site which,
along with Quebec City, has known the longest military
occupation since the French Regime in Canada. The
Museum presents this history through thematic maps,
models, uniforms, weapons, artefacts and archived
documents. An outdoor guided tour will allow you to
retrace the footsteps of past and present occupants
and discover the remains of the 1775 ramparts, as well
as the original British buildings built in 1839, all while
enjoying the scenic view of the Royal Military College
Saint-Jean.

The Galerie Renée-Blain, at the Centre socioculturel
de Brossard, promotes different styles of art and

Historical Park of Pointe-du-Moulin
The Parc historique de la Pointe-du-Moulin is a unique
heritage for the interpretation of our history. The mill
was built in 1705 and still works when the winds are
right. Inside the miller’s house (1790) is an oven where
the miller’s wife baked her bread. The interpretation
center presents interactive exhibitions on seigneuries,
farming techniques, flour milling and domestic life in
the 18th century.
Take our nature trail and enjoy the enchanting
environment and the magnificent view from the banks
of the St. Lawrence River, our beautiful picnic areas
and the cool summer breeze off Lake St. Louis.
Also, enjoy your visit to be a part of a rabaska canoe
trip, try archery or watch the drama show perform at 2
pm by our comedians.

In a charming setting on the slopes of Mont SaintHilaire, which the Abenaki call Wigwomadensis,
the Maison amérindienne introduces visitors to
First Nations heritage. To the sound of the drum
and traditional songs, you can explore exhibitions
reflecting the seasons: maple (spring), corn (summer)
and squash (fall). Entertainment with stories and
legends, movies, and a meal with Native dishes (by
reservation) enhance the experience. Visit a Native
vegetable garden and a berry garden, and the only
urban maple bush in Canada with interpretation
panels. There are exhibitions by Native artists
throughout the year, and a gift shop with traditional
souvenirs.

Explore the only remaining blockhouse in Quebec.
Built around 1871, the Lacolle Mills Blockhouse was
part of the defence network used by the British
colony. It was built to protect the sawmill and the
lighthouse, both located on the Lacolle River, and
as an outpost for the British garrisons stationed in
the Upper Richelieu area and Lake Champlain. Its
original appearance and unique nature intrigues and
fascinates passing visitors and history buffs alike. The
two-storey fortification, with its overhanging second
storey and pyramid-shaped roof, is made of squared
wooden timbers. Its walls have openings for guns and
cannons. It will take you back to the battle of March
30, 1814, between American and British troops. Come
experience a true historical adventure! The Lacolle
Mills Blockhouse, sitting next to the Richelieu River on
Saint-Paul-de-l’Ïle-aux-Noix, is a witness to 230 years
of history in the Upper Richelieu valley.

Louis-Hippolyte-La Fontaine House
Exhibition centre - History and society
The French-style Louis-Hippolyte-La Fontaine House,
dating from 1766, was declared a historic monument
in 1965. La Fontaine, Prime Minister of Lower Canada,
lived here for part of his childhood. It now presents a
permanent exhibition on the history of the house.
The permanent exhibition, entitled Mémoires d'une
maison ancestrale, opened in 2012 and was
updated in 2013. It presents the history of the
Louis-Hippolyte-La Fontaine House, its owners,
restoration and repurposing. The exhibition includes
some archaeological artifacts recently unearthed in
Boucherville, along with reproductions of period
photos. It also looks at different aspects of life in
Boucherville in the early 20th century.

Maison LePailleur
The Maison LePailleur is located in the heart of
Châteauguay, near the Saint-Joachim church, which
was declared a historic monument in 1957. The
Quebec-style stone home was built in 1792 to
serve as a general store. It retains its stone sink
and the impressively wide floorboards, giving it a
remarkable historical charm. Exhibitions on themes
related to regional heritage are presented. During
seniors mornings, elders explain old-time institutions
and crafts for the benefit of visitors.

Maison nationale des Patriotes
Discover the history of the Patriotes in Lower Canada
and the upheavals that marked the country in the first
half of the 19th century. The Maison nationale des
Patriotes is an interpretation centre that presents the
history of the Patriotes movement and the economic,
political and social context of the events of 18371838. Located on the banks of the Richelieu River in
the heart of the heritage village of Saint-Denis, the
centre offers a range of educational activities for young
and old alike, along with a varied program of cultural
activities and special events during the summer (talks,
nighttime walks, a farmers’ market and theme days).
Guides in period costume will take you back in history
to 1828 and tell you about the Patriotes' fight for
freedom and democracy.

Museum - History and society
The mission of the Musée de la Femme is to explain
the role played by women in Quebec history and to
promote the status of women. It showcases women’s
roles in our heritage through artifacts, exhibitions,
workshops and other visitor activities.
The permanent exhibition, Accès sur 400 ans
d'histoire au féminin, is designed around rooms
focusing on different themes in the history of women
and their civil rights, featuring artifacts ranging from
dresses to household objects, period furniture, videos
and photos.

Musée des beaux-arts de Mont-Saint-Hilaire
Museum - Art - Contemporary Art
The Musée d’art de Mont-Saint-Hilaire is dedicated
primarily to promoting the work of three prominent
artists from the region: Jordi Bonet, Paul-Émile
Borduas and Ozias Leduc. Each year, the museum
holds an exhibition on one of these artists in addition
to six or seven temporary exhibitions. This is the
only art museum in the Montérégie region and is a
major promoter of regional arts and culture through its
popular programs.
Along with exhibitions, the Museum’s education
department offers introductions to art for school
groups, art workshops for adults, and lectures and
meetings with artists.

Saint-Ours Canal National Historic Site
Interpretation site - History and society / Science and Technology
Opened in 1849, the Saint-Ours Canal is part of the
network making navigation possible between the Saint
Lawrence River, the Richelieu River, Lake Champlain
and the Hudson River, thereby connecting Montréal to
New York. You will be surprised by the innovation used
to construct this contemporary lock and dam, built on
either side of Darvard Island. In 2001, Parks Canada
inaugurated the Vianney-Legendre fish ladder. This
one-of-a-kind multi-species ladder is designed to
facilitate fish migration. It was built in accordance with
a plan for protecting threatened species, in particular
the Copper Redhorse, and contributes to maintaining
the biodiversity of the Richelieu River.

Religious Heritage
The Saint-Hyacinthe seminary hosts occasional
exhibitions, mainly in summer, explaining the religious
heritage of the diocese. The Seminary chapel or
lobby is transformed into an exhibition space. The
Seminary itself was built in 1927 to plans by architect
René Richer, and evokes the Gothic style of Amiens
Cathedral in France. Painter, architect, decorator
and master stained glass craftsman Guido Nincheri
created the stained glass windows in the choir of the
chapel, depicting the life of St. Anthony of Padua. The
two magnificent rose windows in the transept are the
work of the José Osterrath firm of Cowansville, while
the high altar and the Blessed Virgin and St. Joseph
altar were produced by Casavant et Frères.

Tsiionhiakwatha-Droulers Archaeological Site Interpretation Center

The Droulers-Tsiionhiakwatha archaeological site is
an outdoor museum in a lovely country setting.
The interpretation centre invites you to discover the
life of the pre-Columbian Iroquois in a historically
accurate recreation of a 15th-century village near
the archaeological remains of the largest Iroquoian
settlement discovered in Quebec. Enjoy a unique
museum experience as you visit the longhouses,
garden, lookouts and fish dryers in the company
of an experienced interpreter-guide. Learn about
early agricultural techniques through the permanent
exhibition on the "three sisters", featuring a collection
of original artifacts.
