The Potentate’s Message
Greetings Nobles:
As our Summer draws to an end our Shrine activities start to ramp up. The lull is
over.
Time for everyone to get your working clothes on and hunker down to the tasks
at hand, which are many.
First and foremost we have our September Temple meeting on the ninth which
will be held in the A La Carte Pavilion at 7:30PM. The first part of this meeting will be open to the public
as we will be presenting our annual Community Service award. After this presentation all non-Shriners
will be asked to exit the meeting area and our Stated meeting will be opened in due form.
During this portion of the meeting the matters dealing with our property issues will be discussed
and balloted upon. This is YOUR Temple and these matters affect YOU, so make every effort to be in
attendance and help make these important decisions for OUR beloved Temple.
Always check your calendar, which is on the next page to see what is happening. The 12th is the First Ladies
fund raiser, in the Activities Building at 4PM with
Dinner at 6:30. Make your reservations by calling
the office. 18th at 7PM is the MIA/POW Ceremony,
Yours in The Faith,
in the Activities Building. Guest speaker, Maj Gen
M. T. Smith, USAF Retired. What a Ceremony to
Luther
witness. 26TH at 6PM Leigh Dittman’s Birthday
Luther G. Baker, Jr

MEMBERSHIP
5 for 5 Membership Program Guidelines
‘The Noble’ is the top-line signer (T.L.S.) for FIVE New
Candidates who become EGYPT Shriners and each of
whom remains current in their payment of dues for a
period of FIVE years.
The TLS must have remained current in paying HIS
own dues for that same period and not have been
suspended during that same period for non-payment
of dues.
A ‘new noble’ must remain Egypt Shriners for at least
one year prior to transferring membership to another
Shrine Center to qualify under the program.
Should any of the ‘new Nobles’ resign their membership
or be suspended for non-payment of dues, that ‘new
noble’ will no longer be included in this incentive
program. The TLS must nominate a new candidate
and that replacement candidate must remain a Noble
as described above for 5 years, as well as the TLS’s
other candidates.
When the TLS has nominated five Shriners who remain
current in the payment of their dues for five years, he
will receive a Life Membership at a stated meeting.
This program will commence January 1, 2015. It is
NOT retroactive!

By Worshipful Casey Fletcher 32°, KCCH
Empedocles of Acragas was a Greek, pre-Socratic
philosopher living around 450 BC. He is one of the
earliest of a very long list of philosophers and religious
leaders throughout history endeavoring to explain the
origin and operation of the world and define the role
of the individual man in it. He lived in the Age of
Pericles and was likely a contemporary of Protagoras,
Diogenes and the historian Herodotus. Many
fragments of his writings are extant. His full works
were referenced by Aristotle often.
He was the first to develop the theory of the four
elements – earth, water, fire and air – to explain the
macrocosm, how the world was created, what it is made
of and how it works. The theory, over the centuries,
has probably been applied too literally for a scientific
explanation of how the world works. Empedocles,
however, used the elements more esoterically as
symbols for other characteristics, attributes or
phenomenon.
Developing his theory, he suggested there were two
basic laws of Nature. The Law of Love was the first.
It unifies and stabilizes. The other law was the Law
of Strife. It is impedes development. It destroys and
harms.
Empedocles uses the symbolism of the four elements
to explain the functioning of the two laws. To the extent
the four elements are balanced and in proportion, the
world moves toward a state of Love. To the extent one
or more of elements either dominates or is suppressed,
the world moves toward Strife. He saw the world in a
constant cycle of four stages – “the rule of love, the
period of increasing strife, the rule of strife, and the
period of increasing love.”
Not to be satisfied with only applying these ideas
to the universe, Empedocles asserted they also
explained the microcosm, the individual. As the four
elements, symbolically, become well-balanced and
well-proportioned in our lives, we grow toward Love,
unity, knowledge, understanding and wisdom. Further
he suggests, “an equal proportion of the elements is
responsible for clear thinking.”
To the extent a man acts wisely, controls his passion,
“judiciously uses his senses,” thinks solidly and
balanced, he can learn “the truth about the world” and
about his role in it.
Empedocles’ ideas appear frequently in Masonic ritual.
The principle of the Law of Love is the crux of the 18th
degree, Knight of Rose Croix. And the four elements?
References to them are scattered throughout our
degrees, to good effect. The idea of balance and
proportion of the (symbolic) elements in our lives
might just be the focus in one of the higher numbered
degrees.
The Scottish Rite’s degrees will next be conferred
on October 17th and 24th. Petitions are available at
http://tampascottishrite.org.
The Valley of Tampa regularly meets at its Center in
Tampa on the 2nd Monday of each month at 7:30
PM, preceded by a 5:45 PM dinner. Our September
14th meeting is Worshipful Master and Masonic Youth
organization recognition night. An open meeting,
visitors are welcome.
Casey Fletcher is Past Master of Tuscan Lodge No. 6
in Bartow, Florida. On more than one occasion, it has
been suggested he is unbalanced.
Hospital Tour
Guide News
By Noble Frank Harmon, Chief Tour Guide
Our tour ends in front of the Twin Palms display which
fittingly is also part of the beginning of our hospital.
The palm trees shown are being straightened and
supported by cables wrapped around a large pole.
However crude the device may seem, it represents our
mission of helping children with orthopedic needs in
any way we can. This particular symbol is an adaptation
of the symbol for the National Pediatric Orthopedic
Society which is a bent and gnarled oak tree strapped
by cables to a vertical pole. In 1985 when this hospital
was dedicated, the national symbol was adapted by
the mother of our first Chief of Staff, Dr. John Ogden
to represent Florida, hence the palm trees.
Now that you have been on a tour with us, we are
proud and happy to present you with a replica pin of
Sands Magazine - September 2015 • 7
the Twins Palms for your enjoyment.
Please tell your friends and family about us and our
mission. We thank you for visiting the Shriners Hospital
for Children in Tampa.
Note to Sands readers:
Over the last several months, it has been our pleasure
and our design to give you a written walking tour of
your children’s hospital Reading about the hospital
only scratches the surface of the experience you gain
from a visit here. As a Shriner, your involvement in
Shrine activities necessarily supports the hospital;
that’s why it is your hospital.
Consider becoming a Hospital Tour Guide. It does not
conflict with any unit responsibilities, does not have
any annual dues and gives you an incredible feeling of
satisfaction at the end of your day.
Next month we will begin to highlight some of the
incredible people who work behind the scenes here at
Shriners Hospital for Children Tampa.

By Noble David Jones
Citrus Shrine Club
By Noble Robert “Slim” Owen 33°
Greetings Nobles, August has been a good
month for the BSC. We had a wonderful turn out
for our Birthday Luncheon honoring our Birthday
Nobles which are as follows: Herb Whisenant,
Richard Woodruff, Mark Sills Sr., Clinton Crabtree,
Wells Berry, Roger Langston, Geoffrey McLeod
and Carl Vincent Sr.. Happy Birthday Nobles!
How fortunate we are to be “High-&-Dry”!
At the August Temple Meeting club President
Miguel Viruet & a delegation of club Nobles
presented to the Potentate a check of $ 1250.00
collected from Fez Tip boxes which we placed
and harvest for the Transportation fund. These
tips were collected over the past quarter. The
Fez tip boxes was the transformative idea of
collecting funds for the Transportation Fund by
Illustrious Sir Tom Robinson and has turned out
the be a great success.
Over the last twenty (20) years or so, probably
much longer than that, members of the Citrus
Shrine Club have provided transportation
whenever needed.
On Monday August 31st at 7:00 the BSC will hold
a Social with our Ladies at Romano’s Macaroni
Grill Restaurant in Brandon. It should be a
wonderful evening of fellowship and dining.
Nobles are invited to visit to attend the Brandon
Shrine Club which meets the last Monday of the
month.
Our hearts go out to those less fortunate than us,
especially all the children we provide assistance
for at all Shriners Hospitals. We had only one call
this last month to provide transportation to the
Tampa Unit.
When I came on the scene, back in 1994, Noble
Ken Miller was the Hospital Services go-to man
for Citrus County and “Waki the Wizard” was the
Hospital Services Chairman. As time progressed,
Waki asked me if I would like to help, and of
course I said I would, that was a long time ago,
or at least it seems that way. I’ve been at it ever
since and there isn’t much of anything else that
gives one a feeling of accomplishment. Many
thanks to all the drivers, I’d list them here but I
know I’d miss a few. Without their dedication of
time and talent we would be up the well known
creek, so a BIG THANKS to them all.
Our last meeting was well attended, Ill. Sir Rich
On even numbered months a social dinner is Leger was in attendance as well as a new Egypt
held with our Ladies.
Shriner, Phil Phoel. Both were welcomed in the
usual manner and made to feel “at home”.
On odd numbered months a dinner/business
meeting is held at our clubhouse located at:
The Bushnell Fall Festival is just around the
corner and we will have a food booth and hope
125 Skywood Dr. in Seffner, 33584
to participate in the parade as we have in past
years.
Nobles only, cocktail at 6:00, dinner/meeting
7:00 p.m.

Fun N’ Frolic
By Noble Brian “Pops” Hamwey
Here’s hoping everyone had an outstanding summer,
clowns!! Now it’s time to get busy again.
In September there are a host of activities, including what
is being billed as the final installation of Leigh Dittman’s
Birthday Party on September 26th. That is immediately
followed on October 3rd by the 30th birthday bash for our
very own Shriner’s Hospital for Children – Tampa. That will
be a full day of festivities, and clowns are being requested
to participate in face.
Our biggest event of the year – besides of course the
Circus – is this year’s BYC Halloween Party on October 31st
at the Stu Lang Activities Building. The festivities start at
6 pm and will run through midnight. Admission for the
event is $30 for singles, $50 for couples and includes food
and drink. Plans for the evening include multiple costume
contests and the drawing of the Cash Clown winners (three
drawings for a total of $1000).
As always, Stated Meetings are on the second Wednesday
of every month. The September meeting (on the 9th) will
be especially important due to the vote of the Nobility on
the future of our current property. Please, if you attend any

Just a reminder the Legion of Honor will be dark will
reopen on the first Thursday in September. We look
forward to seeing all the Nobles back after the summer
break.
Even though we have been dark for the summer, LOH still
has activities going on:
From 10/8/2015 to 10/12/2015- LOH and the Fun and
Frolic Unit will be jointly conducting a paper drive to
collect money for the hospital at the antique auto show.
Anyone that can make it please come, we can always use
the extra help.
LOH will also be entering the Chili Cook Off. Watch out, we
have a secret weapon this year and expect to win it going
away!
The LOH always conducts a yearly event to memorialize
MIA/POW’s and will be doing in again this year. If you
have never been too one in the past, it really is a great
ceremony. Again, all the participation that we can get will
be greatly appreciated.
Check your upcoming Sands for more information on
these events. See you in September.

The pickle is now riding with Andy Foster. Yes, the pickle
has changed hands quite frequently over the last few
months. Feel free to ask Andy his story. We all have one. If
you guess what happened, I (he) will buy you a drink or at
least owe you one.
The Motor Corps has had several wonderful rides these
past few months, and we have some exciting rides coming
up. All riders are welcome to come out and enjoy the
fellowship. Please visit us at “Egypt Shrine Motor Corps”

Oriental Band
By Noble Robert E. Stihler
Where did the summer go ????? I trust all had a relaxing
summer.
Hopefully, some of the new Nobles created at the June
Ceremonial, if not already committed to a Unit, would
consider the Oriental Band. We need new members!! If
you enjoy music, enjoy camaraderie, you would enjoy the
Band. You do not need an advanced degree in Music, as we
provide free lessons, free instruments, and free uniforms.
What could be better??? If you have any questions,
please call President Bill Martin, (813) 681-5361, or e-mail
[email protected]; or me at (407-657,7521 or

Provost Guard
By Noble Tom Edwards PP
We celebrate Labor Day in September and have for over a
hundred years to highlight the social and economic
achievements of the American worker. It is a yearly tribute
to the many contributions workers have made to the
strength, prosperity, and well-being of this great country.
It is indeed appropriate that we pay tribute on “Labor Day”
to the Great Architect for this nation’s strength, freedom,
and leadership – the American Worker.
And if you haven’t stopped by the Egypt Shrine
“Memorabilia Room” it is alive and well due to the great
response of so many Nobles and families who have
donated some unique items of history. A special display
has been completed to highlight items of Imperial Sir Jack
H. Jones during his year as Imperial Potentate and an area
for Illustrious Sir Edmond L. Bidoul Jr. Come by and enjoy.
This month we celebrate with our quarterly Covered Dish
Dinner. Nobles Brent and Don will be preparing the main
course and the Marshal has requested that everyone bring
appetizers, a side dish, or dessert. Come out and enjoy the
good times!
Get them cowboy hats out and these boots are for
walking and come on down to the Annual Provost Guard
Country Western Dance on Saturday, September 26, 2015
beginning at 8:00 P.M. till “The Keg Floats”. This is a date
change to the Calendar Book! Due to the popularity of “J.T.
Curtis and the Florida Scoundrels” seating will be limited
to 300 paid tickets. Get your tickets from any Provost
Guard member for $10.00 now. BYOB, Set-ups Available,
with complimentary drafts while they last. The Pope will be
there so bring it on! Thank you for all your support.
As the Guard continues to support “The 5 for 5 Membership”
theme this year we stand ready to achieve our goal. The
Fall Ceremonial will be here soon so get those petitions
into the office and remember that the initiation fee is $175
and includes 2015 dues. Get out and support your Shrine.
This month we are busy again with the Labor Day Degree,
Table Lodge, MIA/POW Table for One, Leigh Dittman’s
Birthday Party, Paper Drives, Luncheons, Circus Banquet,
Stated Meeting and the numerous Committee Meetings.
All Nobles in good standing are welcome to join with
the Egypt Shrine Provost Guard. We meet on the third
Thursday of each month at 7:30 P.M. in the Unit Room.
Come out and join us.

Shriners Hospitals for Children invites patients to race to adventure at the 2016 Rose Parade
Shriners Hospitals for Children is proud to participate in
the 127th Rose Parade® presented by Honda on Friday,

the third consecutive Rose Parade appearance for Fezzy,
the popular mascot and honorary member of Shriners

This year’s float will feature a gigantic fire truck driven by

illustrates the commitment of Shriners Hospitals for
Children to the overall health and well-being of their
patients. The staff is committed to providing both hope and healing, helping patients to overcome challenges
and become as confident and independent as possible. They encourage children them to dream big and “race
to the adventures” that the future will bring.
“We are excited to be able to participate once again in the Rose Parade,” said Jerry G. Gantt, Chairman of the
Board of Directors for Shriners Hospitals for Children.
“Our float, Fezzy Races to Adventure, is a great way to show the public our commitment to providing healing in a
way that is fun and child-friendly. I believe the children riding on the float will enjoy it and so will the audience.”

Editor’s Notes
Fellow Nobles:
Please make sure to check the flyers in this issue of the Sands to confirm dates and times for any
events you plan on attending. There have been multiple scheduling changes and we certainly
don’t want anyone missing out on these great activities.
It’s hard to believe how quickly the year is flying by. Kids are back in school, the summer heat is
(thankfully) getting somewhat ready to give way to a ‘Florida Fall’ season and before you know it
Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas will be upon us.
As you’ve seen in this issue of the Sands, there are a lot of events coming up at Egypt Shrine. If you
haven’t been to an event in a while you certainly have plenty to choose from. Come on by and say
hello, we would all love to see you.
Until next month, have a safe and wonderful September.
