Natural Elements Used in Storytelling Strands
Custom Jewelry Designs
Overview
Just like each of us, every rock in earth’s jewelry box has a
history and a story to tell. Raw minerals, crystals, gems, and
other natural elements are genuine and artful. They are earthy
and soulful. Stones can trigger memories we have from our past
such as places we’ve been or loved ones we want to keep close.
We may be drawn to certain gems because of color or texture, a
birthstone, or a healing quality they possess. When put on a
strand and worn as jewelry, they will not only give a finishing
touch to your wardrobe, but these Storytelling Strands can also
be conversation pieces that bring you great joy.
All of my jewelry creations are handmade and most pieces are
one of a kind. The stones are all natural and have been collected
from my travels all over the United States as well as other parts
of the world including Australia, New Zealand, and Peru. I
consciously try to honor these gemstones in order to let the
finished strands tell their stories. Please enjoy this book!

if exposed to heat. The crystal mostly forms in geodes in rock
cavities left by volcanic gas bubbles. Amethyst is found in

of Montana and North Carolina in the United States.

Milky Quartz
Color
Clear to white
History
Milky quartz, the most common variety of crystalline quartz, is
pure white, either opaque or translucent, and owes its color to
tiny bubbles of air or water contained within the quartz. When
other impurities, such as iron, slightly color the crystal, it is
known as common quartz. Areas of increased milkiness often
occur toward the base of clear quartz crystals – again the result
of tiny air or water bubbles. Common in mountainous regions,
veins of milky quartz can be seen threading their way across
exposed and eroded rock surfaces.

Rudraksha Seeds
Color
Various shades of brown
History
Rudraksha is a large evergreen broad-leaved tree whose seed is
traditionally used for prayer beads in Hinduism. Seeds from a
tree sacred to Shiva, rudraksha are often strung as beads for
malas. Rudraksha seeds are found mainly in Indonesia, Nepal,
and India.
Below are ways to determine if a rudraksha bead is authentic:
1. A real rudraksha bead will never float on water.
2. Even if you boil a real rudraksha in water for 6 hours, there
would be no effect on the bead. A fake will easily
disintegrate.
3. A good rudraksha bead will not be broken at any end.
4. A ‘healthy’ bead should have well defined and natural corns
and contours.
