to provide another fun-filled
evening.
We are excited to announce
that Matt Richardson, a
Councilor for the Municipality of North Perth, will be our
emcee for the evening. Matt,
and his wife Cathy, were both
born and raised in North
Perth and have been living in
Listowel for over 40 years.
Matt volunteered as a Firefighter with the North Perth
Fire Service at the Listowel
Station for nine years before
his retirement in 2009.
He
is currently employed with
Home Hardware in St. Jacobs. We are looking forward to seeing Matt in action
at our special evening.
As always the Social promises to be a night of entertain-
ment with a Silent Auction,
Chinese Auctions, and a
scrumptious light lunch to
round off the events.
Thank you to the Listowel
Golf Club and Alex Petter of
the Culinary Fool Catering

Hospice Donations ……..
At the time of death, many of our clients often request
that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to North
Perth Community Hospice.
This generosity is greatly appreciated, as it helps us
assure that the same compassionate support is available
to all in our community who are confronted with a lifelimiting illness or bereavement.
Please consider Hospice as your charity of choice if a
family has not stated a preferred recipient for memorial
donations.

Coordinator’s Comments
by Mary Kay MacKenzie,
Coordinator of Visiting Volunteers
“Volunteers are Part of the Ripple Effect” is the theme of National Volunteer
Week, 2015. What a perfect fit for the many volunteers who work so diligently
on behalf of NPCH!
The members of our Board of Directors who focus on the day to day operation
of our organization must be applauded. The time and energy they direct into
understanding the issues which influence the world of hospice palliative care as
well as the energy they devote to fundraising are definite contributors to the
successful operation of our organization.
Our Visiting Volunteers (VV’s) are true ambassadors of “The Ripple Effect”.
They faithfully share their personal time with individuals who have received a
life limiting diagnosis. The following examples provide proof of their positive
influence:
One of our VV’s provided care in a nursing home for one precious lady for
almost two years. Unknowingly, others were watching the tender care
and compassion demonstrated throughout the time they spent together.
Their laughter, their conversations, their activities, their outings and
their developing friendship were being monitored by patients and their
families in other rooms. When this lady’s health declined, our Volunteer was a presence at her cherished friend’s bedside during her last
days and hours.
The grandson of a dear lady who has received regular visits from several of
our Visiting Volunteers, entered a Twelve Days of Christmas contest.
A local business enlisted the community’s assistance in choosing
twelve deserving recipients, individuals or non-profit organizations, to
each receive a $500 donation from the company. This young man
wrote a compelling letter which described his reasons why North Perth
Community Hospice should be one of the non-profit organizations to
be chosen. Because he witnessed volunteerism firsthand, took the time
to sit down and submit his thoughts, NPCH received a much appreciated donation and folks in the community were further informed of the
value of hospice service.
Through these Visiting Volunteers, others were able to observe their sincere
interest and concern for whom they were visiting. Both scenarios prompted
those observers to call and inquire how NPCH might possibly provide for their
loved ones...truly triggering the Ripple Effect.

VOLUNTEERS ARE PART OF THE RIPPLE EFFECT
National Volunteer Week is a time to recognize, celebrate, and thank Canada’s volunteers.
A volunteer action is like a stone thrown in a lake: its effect has a direct impact. At the same
time, like ripples, volunteer efforts reach out far and wide to improve communities.
Undeniably, VOLUNTEERS ROCK!
NPCH staff members invite you to join in recognizing, celebrating, and thanking the hardworking volunteers who ensure quality programs and caring support are provided for our
community.

8th Annual Teddy Bear Toss a Success
The annual Teddy Bear Toss turned out to be a perfect day. The
weather cooperated and there was a good crowd to cheer for the Listowel Cyclones. Hospice asked five young Minor Hockey skaters to
lace up to help gather bears from the ice. There was a special moment as we waited near the change room. As the Junior B players
walked by the open door, our five young skaters stood watching.
At half the Junior B's size, they put out their
gloved hands for a good-luck hand
bump. Each Cyclone player took time to hand bump the young skaters on their way to the ice. We felt such respect for their thoughtfulness. Only a few moments into the second period, the Cyclones
scored a goal and all of the bears were tossed onto the ice to be collected. These bears will now be placed in the loving arms of children
needing a little comfort.

Coordinator’s Comments
by Susan Qureshi,
Coordinator of Hospice Services
As I reflect on this Spring message, I am mindful of feeling ‘low on
reserves’. It has been a long, hard winter and the snow banks are still
high, in spite of the arrival of warmer air. I have spent a small fortune
keeping all of the wild birds fed through the bitter cold days, but it is
my daily reward to enjoy their presence out my back window. I look
forward to the arrival of Spring with hope, and
I
am thankful for the friendships that are in my
life. These friendships remind me daily of how
important some people are in my life. They
also remind me that loss is something we all
have to live with, but there are some losses so
profound, that they shatter our world and knock us to the ground. Grief
can overwhelm us and it is so important to reach out for support and
find someone who will understand your pain. Expressions of grief and
mourning, are essential to help move you through the myriad of feelings such as sadness, guilt, anger, hopelessness, confusion, exhaustion,
and emptiness. If you have a friend who has lost someone important,
take time to call and stop by. By reaching out, you will remind them of
the friendships which can help them through. If you have lost someone
and are finding your grief overwhelming, and you don’t know where to
turn, call your doctor or Hospice; call someone, so you are not alone.
Every Spring we celebrate Volunteer Week and express appreciation
for the many volunteers making a difference in our community. Spring
also brings Mother’s Day and Father’s Day, giving us more opportunities to express our gratitude and appreciation for special people in our
lives. For many, honouring a mother or father who have died becomes
an important ritual because it comforts us to remember their lives and
their love. By being grateful for special people in our lives, we will
find peace and happiness this spring as we say good-bye to a long and
difficult winter.
“My mom is a never-ending song in my heart, of comfort, happiness,
and being. I may sometimes forget the words, but I always remember
the tune.”

Book Review - Adult
Nobody’s Child: How Older Women Say Good-Bye to Their Mothers
Written By: Diane Sher Lutovich
There are likely as many different mother-daughter relationships as
there are mothers and daughters. Nevertheless, the 45 frank and articulate women Diane Lutovich interviewed for Nobody's Child, span a
wide range of the possibilities; from intensely close to bitterly estranged. How we deal with the loss of the person who gave us life
involves summing up and evaluating our own lives as well as our
mothers' and reflecting on the differences, the similarities and, most
importantly, the connections. The book gives full value to the
importance of grief. This is no glib, self-help guide that promises to
lead us painlessly beyond a difficult life event. Beautifully written,
humorous, and poignant, it is rather like reading the conversations
one has with intimate and trusted friends. Lutovich, in working
through her own experience and capturing those of others, shows us
that there are many paths for finding and accepting what our mothers
have meant to us, what they have given us, and how we carry on
when they are gone.
Website Review - Children
http://www.dougy.org/grief-resources/podcasts/
Site Produced By: NetRaising
Based out of Oregon, The Dougy Center has an excellent online resource page offering age appropriate grief tips for children. Specific
challenges around special days are explained. Podcasts can be
downloaded or listened to on the computer. One podcast entitled
‘Somewhere Between’ addresses the teen grief experience. The text
for each podcast is written out and can be used as a hard copy for
reference. There are links to activities which may help a child or teen
through their grief. Many resources exist on the internet but the
Dougy Center website is easy to navigate and provides high quality
resources when you
need them.
