PLANNING A RELIABLE ENERGY FUTURE
Co-op to break ground on new headquarters in Kenton
This summer, Mid-Ohio Energy breaks ground on new
facilities to serve as the co-op’s headquarters in Kenton.
As announced at the cooperative’s annual meeting of
members in April, the building project comes as a result
of a 2013 building assessment study that identified a
need for more office and warehouse space. The comprehensive study also
noted several areas of

employees.
In 2015: Over 8,000 meters served;
1,350 miles of line; Kenton office
houses 15 of the co-op’s 25
employees.
In comparison, it would cost over $4 million to renovate the current facilities to meet building codes, which
would still leave the co-op with an aging structure that
no room for growth. The cost is similar to typical distribution investments, such as substation maintenance or
line replacement. A portion of the cost will be offset by
the sale of the co-op’s existing facilities.
The new headquarters location will allow us to better
serve the needs of our members and local communities.
A dedicated gathering room will be able to accommodate member meetings and gatherings. Energy efficiency
will be considered throughout the building process, including the use of natural lighting. Geothermal systems
will be used for heating and cooling.
The new building is expected to be completed and
open to members in summer 2016. Track the project’s
progress in Mid-Ohio Energy’s local pages of Country
Living and online at MidOhioEnergy.com.
NEW KENTON OFFICE: ARCHITECTURAL RENDERINGS
The new Kenton office will be located in the western boundary of Kenton, on the north side of
State Route 309 (across from Hardin Hills Health Center). The new facilities will be set on 16
acres of land owned by the co-op and will allow us to meet the needs of a modern utility.

Increase efficiency,
receive energy credits
Mid-Ohio Energy Cooperative, Inc.
BY SAMANTHA RHODES
We all know what accompanies summertime —
humidity and hot temperatures. But there’s another
summertime element that affects your wallet: higher
electric bills.
Electric power is usually received from baseload
power plants, which are the most reliable and cost
the least to operate. But when more electricity is
needed — like during the hot summer months, usually
between 2 and 7 p.m. — your electric cooperative is
forced to use power from inefficient “peaking” plants,
which costs more. When demand for electricity is
high, the cost can skyrocket for members.
The solution? Participating in “load management”
programs from Mid-Ohio Energy, which encourage
the purchase of efficient appliances like geothermal
systeams, air-to-air heat pumps, and water heaters
to be equipped with radio-controlled switches. The
switch can then be used to lower the demand for electricity from cooling systems and water heaters.
From July 2013 to June 2014 alone, Ohio electric
cooperatives participating in load management programs cumulatively saved over 5 million kilowatthours of energy. That’s the equivalent of the power use
of 5,586 Ohio homes in one month, according to the
U.S. Energy Administration. Saving that much keeps
electricity costs lower for everyone over the entire system.
Mid-Ohio Energy will provide, at no cost to you, a
radio-controlled switch for your new appliance. The
cooperative will install the switch on water heaters. In
the case of a new heat pump or goethermal system,
the switch must be installed by the unit’s contractor.
This does not control your home’s thermostat or harm
your cooling system; it simply cycles the unit’s compressor during peak conditions for about 30 minutes
of every hour in 15-minute intervals.
“Cycling the air-conditioning units, instead of just
turning them off for an extended period, allows us to
reduce costs on hot, summer days while continuing to
cool members’ homes,” says Kevin Zemanek, director
of system operations at Buckeye Power, Mid-Ohio Energy’s cooperative wholesale power supplier.
These cost reductions are passed on to co-op mem24
MidOhio0815.indd 2
bers as savings on their electric bills. Geothermal
systems and air-to-air heat pumps are eligible for a
one-time energy credit of $400. Qualifying new water
heater installations are eligible for an energy credit for
half of the purchase price (up to $200
rebate).
No maintenance or upkeep is required on your
part, and to see if the switch has been activated, simply check for a red indicator light. The switch will only
be activated during peak demand situations.
Member satisfaction
We know what you’re thinking — will I feel a difference in temperature?
Because the fan isn’t controlled, cool air still circulates in your home when the switch is activated.
Despite factors like how well your home is insulated,
most participants report they don’t notice a change in
comfort.
“The switch is designed to operate in a manner that
will result in little to no difference in home comfort,”
says Brian Barger, manager of special projects at MidOhio Energy. Similar considerations are made before
placing a switch on a water heater. To qualify for a
rebate and control switch, a water heater must have at
least 50-gallon capacity. This helps ensure members
will have an adequate supply of hot water available
during peak hours.
The co-op has more than 4,500 load management
switches installed on heating/cooling systems and
water heaters throughout its system.
Moving forward
If you’re planning to install a new geothermal system, air-to-air heat pump or water heater, give us a
call or stop by our offices to enroll in the program.
For more information on load management and
program qualifications, please visit our rebate page at

Formulating strategies
BY T.J. KIRK
Winning means using less
Most people
agree that using
energy wisely is
a smart decision.
It’s good for your
wallet, and it’s good for the planet.
But let’s be honest — it can be
pretty boring.
That’s why some utilities have
turned to friendly competitions to
get people excited about energy
efficiency, and it’s easy to recreate
the idea among groups or even
just one family. The best part? Everyone saves energy and money in
the long run.
To get in on the fun, you’ll need
to start by comparing your electricity use this month to the same
month last year. That gives a more
accurate account of your use. If
you don’t want to compare to the
same month as last year, you can
also do a month-to-month or even

Your monthly bill shows your kilowatt-hour use for the current month
along with energy use info for the
past 12 months. However, if you’re
curious about past or present energy
use, there’s no need to wait for your
statement to arrive in the mail. You
can access energy use information anytime via our app or online Energy
Center customer portal. View daily
use breakdowns or energy use for a
specified date range.
week-to-week comparison. Just
use data that you can easily access,
and remember, this is meant to
be fun.
Let’s use a competition between
two neighbors as an example.
Both neighbors will need to know
what their baseline energy use
is. You can contact Mid-Ohio
Energy if you do not have this
information handy. Ideally, use
the month from the prior year;
this is the number that you will be
competing against. The goal of the
competition is to have the greatest percentage reduction for the
month against that baseline.
Then you can get started on the
saving. Figure out ways to reduce
your energy use by the largest
amount without spending more
than $50 — you shouldn’t have to
spend hundreds or thousands of
dollars on improvements to make
a positive impact.
The secret weapon to winning
will be your kids because they are
amazingly creative and have a
unique way of looking at things.
Here are some suggestions for
winning strategies:
• Go camping outside for a few
days instead of living inside the
house.
• Cook meals on a grill instead
of in the kitchen.
• Watch less TV, disconnect the
video game system or turn off the
computer.
• Unscrew some lightbulbs.
• Unplug battery and cellphone chargers.
• Cut down on washing
by using washing machines
and dishwashers only when they
are truly full.
• “Fine” family members for
leaving the lights on in an empty
room or a door to the outside
open.
Once the competition starts,
engage everyone in your home to
brainstorm ideas, and challenge
them to develop a to-do list. The
person with the longest list could
win a small prize. Then complete
the items on the list. Try to turn
everything into a game or a race.
What does the winner of the
competition get? In this sort of
competition, everyone wins because they are saving energy and
saving money. But the prize can
be as simple as a pizza party for
the winner.
How much energy can you save
doing a competition like this? Electric co-ops that have engaged their
members in these sorts of competitions have reported energy savings ranging from 9 to 58 percent.
Those who saved the most made
more drastic changes, such as grilling or camping. The energy savings
do go down once the competition
ends. But co-ops have found that
even when the competition is over,
those who played the game are still
using less energy than before the
competition, and some of the easier behaviors stick, such as running
only a full dishwasher or unscrewing lightbulbs. 

CO-OP PRINCIPLE: CONCERN FOR COMMUNITY
Mid-Ohio sponsors local students’ trip to D.C.
Mid-Ohio Energy Cooperative, Inc.
Becky Scott of Belle Center and William Trihaft of LaRue were
among 39 high school winners from throughout Ohio and West Virginia who visited Washington, D.C., June 12-18 as part of Ohio Rural
Electric Cooperatives’ Youth Tour to the nation’s capital. The weeklong trip included visits to the U.S. Capitol, many of the memorials
and museums, and other important sites.
The students were awarded the tour in a scholastic competition
sponsored by Mid-Ohio Energy. They joined about 1,700 representing
electric cooperatives in 43 states. As part of their tour of the nation’s
capital, students met with members of their Congressional delegation,
visited Arlington National Cemetery and attended a performance at
the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts.
Becky is the daughter of David and Lori Scott, and Andrew is the
son of David and Kimberly Trihaft.
ELGIN ELEMENTARY HOSTS CO-OP
EMPLOYEES FOR ‘LEADER IN ME’ LUNCH
Before the end of last school year, a group of employees from Mid-Ohio Energy attended a ‘Leader In Me’
program luncheon at Elgin Elementary School. Elgin staff
and students hosted co-op employees and took time
to explain the program’s seven guiding habits that set
students up for success. Employees were honored to
visit with such a bright and enthusiastic group of local
students. Co-op employees attending were, left to right,
Kathy Sherman, Mark Terrill, Brent Ransome, Kip Luikart
and Brian Barger.

Unclaimed capital patronage
Mid-Ohio Energy Cooperative, Inc.
The following members have unclaimed capital that we declared in 2010. These amounts represent the members’
share of margins that were generated by the cooperative during the years these people were living in the cooperative’s service areas and purchasing electricity from Mid-Ohio Energy Cooperative, Inc. (or formely United Rural
Electric or Marion Rural Electric). Attempts to reach these people by mail were returned because of incorrect or insufficient addresses. These names have appeared in Country Living Magazine in 2010 and several times since then.
As required by Mid-Ohio Energy’s Code of Regulations, four years following the mailing of notices and 60 days after
two consecutive notices in Country Living, the unclaimed funds revert to the cooperative to be reallocated to patrons. This is the first notice.
