Ed’s Bit….
You will hopefully notice a theme to
this issue – MCAC are out and about
quite a bit over the next few months!
The summer months see us displaying/visiting/running events that will all
showcase the club and what we do.
From a Competition Car Night at Uxbridge Cricket Club, to Wings and
Wheels, with the Ace Café and Uxbridge Autoshow amongst others in
between, we have never had such an
opportunity to publicise the club like
this.
I’ve included as much detail around
time and dates as possible in this issue but, as ever, keep an eye out for
Brian’s MCAC.net emails for final details and any last minute changes.
While on that subject, can everyone
make sure that Brian has an up-todate email address for you, as it’s
going to be even more important than
ever soon.
Why? I hear you ask.
Well, this is the last issue of the mag
that is going to be distributed in a
printed format by default. As discussed at the AGM in April, the printing and postage costs for our mag
have now become astronomical –
with the recent stamp price increases
being the final straw – and following a
straw poll on the night, an overwhelming majority were happy to receive an electronic copy.
Now I completely understand that a
‘real’ copy is nice to have, but it
seems that we are now one of the
few clubs that still ‘prints’ their mag,
and it looks really good on an iPad! If
you are unable to receive an electronic copy, please let either Brian or
myself know, and we’ll make sure
that you still receive a printed copy
but please only ask if you’re not
‘connected’, not because you just
want a paper copy. For now there will
be no increase in subs if you do want
to still receive a printed version, but
this will be reviewed for next year.
As promised last time, I’ve included a
couple of articles on memories of
Christine. The Council are looking
into the best way to remember her,
and whilst we have some ideas, all
suggestions from club members
would be greatly appreciated.
Right, just to finish on a really high
note, I’ve fixed the 205 – yippee!!!!
After replacing just about everything
between the fuel pump and the crank
sensor (and I mean everything), a
track day at Bedford Autodrome in
early May proved that after 100 miles
of hard work, she didn’t miss a beat.
Bedford was a great track (albeit a bit
wet on the day…) and I’d recommended it to anyone for a day’s thoroughly enjoyable driving. Anyone
fancy a ‘club’ day out? Let me know,
and I’ll see what I can do if there is
enough interest…
Page 5

Oh, and I finally managed to take Fi
out in the car at ‘battle’ speeds, and
do you know what, she thoroughly
enjoyed it. Maybe a new co-driver in
the making? She’s certainly a lot better looking than the current one….. 
Chris
Contributions and/or pictures for inclusion in the next issue of the magazine
should be submitted to Chris Keys at
[email protected]
The closing date for the next issue is
15th July, so don’t leave it to the last
minute before the Olympics start...
C h a i r m a n ‘ s
Unfortunately, I was unable to attend
the AGM but understand that it was
fairly well attended and the business
was completed without any awkward
questions for Chris! As there were no
volunteers for the vacancy on the
Council, the same incumbents continue
to look after the Club for another year. I
also missed the Brakefast – a rather
wet day I understand – which saw several new members joining the Club in
order to compete. We extend a warm
welcome to them all.
Thanks to Pete F for organising the
Beer and Skittles Evening which,
somehow, I managed to win! Where
was all the opposition? The following
weekend, we had the IPB Motor Services MiddleWick Stages. Numbers
were down, which means we may have
made a small loss, but those that attended had a good day and enjoyed
around 75 miles of competitive motoring over the 8 stages.
With various shows over the summer
months, we are hoping that as many
members as possible will help and display their cars to publicise the Club.

Guy is the man to contact regarding
the two main events – the Uxbridge
Autoshow on 15th July and MCAC
at the Ace Café, the following Saturday (21st July).
Graham and I are again venturing
to Belgium this year but decided not
to register for the championship as
they wanted €200 each to register!
Sods Law means that we have
been having better results this year,
finishing 3rd Historic and 1st in Class
on the Haspengouw Rally at the
end of February. In March we were
offered a free entry on the
Moorslede Rallysprint, run by the
same club that organizes the Tour
of Flanders Rally, so we had to
journey to Ypres for the weekend –
what a shame!! Two punctures
meant we dropped down the field to
finish 6th Historic and 4th in Class –
we should have been 2nd or
3rd again without the loss of some
of the black stuff! We missed the
TAC Rally, as that was over the
Easter weekend, so next was the
Rallye de Wallonie at the end of
April, which meant that we missed

both the AGM and the Brakefast,
where we were 3rd in Class and
8th Historic. We achieved another
1st in Class and 7th Historic on the
Sezoens Rally but the event was
marred by a fatal accident involving a
local crew in an EvoX, which resulted
in the event being curtailed after 4
stages! Everyone’s thoughts were
with the unfortunate crew.
Happy and safe motoring.

Forthcoming Events For Your Diary….
Club Night—Thursday, 21st June
We have agreed with UCC that we can display some of our competition cars
on the grass area by the main bar on the evening of Thursday 21st June, and
whilst we will have quite a bit of space available, can you let Andrew, Guy or
Tony know that you’re intending to bring your car.
This is a fantastic chance to show who we are to both UCC and to the other
members, so please make every effort to come down, even if you can’t bring
your competition car…
Uxbridge Autoshow —Sunday, 15th July
We have our usual LARGE pitch at this year’s show, and after the giddy
heights of winning the ‘Best Club Stand’ trophy last year, we need to pull out
all the stops to keep it! If you have a car to put on display let either Guy or
Chris know. Oh, and don’t forget your sunscreen/umbrella (or both!)
Ace Café Evening — Saturday, 21st July
After last year’s huge success, not only have the Ace Café asked us back,
but they have given us one of the prime Saturday slots in July! As last year,
come down, show your car, have a bite to eat and enjoy probably the best
social evening you’re likely to have in 2012! Guy is again looking after the
bookings, so make sure you let him know ASAP if you want to put your car
on display.
Classics on the Green — Wednesday, 1st August
We hope to have our usual pitch at this fantastic event (although probably
sans barbeque this year,,,). Anyhow, it all starts early afternoon, but most of
us are there by about 6pm, so let Tony or Brian know if you’re intending to
pop down with your pride and joy….
Simply Sideways AutoSolo — Sunday, 5th August
If last year’s event is anything to go by, this is definitely one not to be missed.
Check the website for regs etc. but Guy and Peter Cox are the men in charge
this year as I’m off to a stadium in East London to watch some blokes run
100m as quickly as they can… 

Christine Mary Poxon
Christine was a country girl, being a Rector’s daughter living in Norfolk, who
met husband Harry in 1955, when both were recuperating in the Norfolk &
Norwich hospital – she from breaking her back in three place, after crashing
her motorbike through a hedge, and he from losing a leg whilst marshalling at
Snetterton when a car left the track. Thus started Christine’s involvement in
Motor Sport!
Following her marriage in 1956, the Poxons became active members of
MCAC – Harry being Hon. Secretary for 12 years, during which he was instrumental in turning the club into a Limited Company. The Registered office
is still at their address and the Club’s equipment shed resides in the garden.
After Harry’s death in 1975 Christine was elected to the MCAC council and
served conscientiously until 1987 when she became a vice-president. But this
honour by no means meant the end of her Club involvement . As hitherto,
she would often be found in some lonely spot at midnight on Night Trials, as
well as on many a Club Rally – even being hidden up a tree on one event!
Also, do not forget “Harry’s Caf” caravan, dishing up tasty meals, or tea and
coffee, on many events including Welsh, Scottish and RAC Rallies.
Serving on the MG Car Club Committee would often find her somewhere in
North Wales, carrying out tasks on the RAC Rally and she was also in charge
of the Cuckfield checkpoint on the annual London to Brighton Veteran Car
Run. Another motoring interest was the West Middlesex Amateur Motor Cycle Club, regularly attending their meetings – as with all motoring activities,
following on after Harry.
Christine was elected to the RAC General Committee, where she represented us as an Associate Club, until the demise of that organisation upon its
sale.
In a nutshell, she would help at every event possible in the Motoring world –
not to mention driving for Chorleywood Care, helping in the local church,
singing, towing a caravan all over the country and how she found time to tend
her beautiful garden, I cannot imagine.
Christine’s passing has left a huge vacuum to be filled and many folk will
miss her greatly, none more so than her son Joe, to whom we extend our
deepest sympathy.
John Williams, President, MCAC

Our Christine!
Here are some excerpts of member’s reactions, to the sad passing of
Christine Poxon:Very sad. An inspiration to anyone on how to make the most of your life. Paul
H
An end of a Motorsporting Era! Hazel H.
Very sad news... Guy.
We were really sorry to hear of Christine’s passing and would appreciate it if
you can pass our condolences on to her family. A sad day indeed. Malc &
Rose F.
Gutted to hear this sad news. Cut her in half and Christine would have had
MCAC running through her (and MGCC). The club must do something to
celebrate the life of this special lady. I think that my lasting memory of Christine was standing by a table with cakes, biscuits and a tea urn. Nothing unusual about that except that this was in the middle of the woods at Marlow
Triangle, late at night / early (very) in the morning while club members were
out enjoying themselves on a 12 car. I would have been dubious of congregating there with one companion, but Christine did it all on her own. Pete F
I'm really shocked... I knew she was receiving treatment but I spoke to her
the other day and really thought everything would be fine. This is such sad
news. My thoughts are with Joe now who has been looking after her, and all
her family and friends. May she rest in peace. She will be missed by everyone... Martin Lush
I can remember Christine’s welcome to Steve Spooner and myself when we
joined the club back in 1977 or was it 1978. Her interest in the club and its
members was a true inspiration. My lasting memory? There are so many to
list. Maybe giving her a tabard with her name on it . Or was it when I took
over from her as the MCAC rep on the RAC General Council. Her advice was
‘I always like to say something – keeps the club’s name to the fore’. Thinking
on, it was actually a box of Rose’s chocolates that she brought me in Hospital
after my acute peritonitis a couple of years ago. So sorry that I did not have
the opportunity to visit her recently. Mike H.
Number: 302
Page 15
Christine was such a warm welcoming person. Last year was my first year
with MCAC and she made me so welcome on events, always came over &
talked & gave up her seat at Classics on the Green. She will be sadly
missed. Helen Hulme.
Very sad news everyone had a place in their heart for Christine she will be
sorely missed. My memory is of her telling us off after we nearly hit her on the
Essex Charity Stages. It was very funny - I felt like a naughty school
kid. Richard’s fondest memory was of an auto show where she held one end
of a Middlesex banner on a pole and he did donuts around her! He was missing her by inches and she never flinched. A very brave lady. Paul Brown.
I can only echo everybody's thoughts on this very sad news. Christine was a
very special lady and will be much missed but also much remembered. I'm
sure we will all have our own particular memories. Mine are of bumping into
Christine when she was marshalling a stage on the RAC Rally in the depths
of Wales, it is hard to believe it was 20 years ago. They are also of those post
-club night coffees at hers that were so important in making the club what it is
and was and in many lasting friendships being formed. She should be an inspiration to us all, in fact, I don't doubt she is already busy setting up a time
control on some distant star! Andrew Williamson.
Christine was definitely an institution and I'm sure she will be sorely missed
by all. My condolences go to her family and friends, I know for one that I will
miss her. Kevin F.
Very sad news indeed. She was a true motor sport fan through and through.
An inspiration for all of us and amazingly active still. I remember many a fun
evening at Christine’s house for coffee after club with Andy Inskip always trying to nick the chocolate biscuits first. She was always extremely generous
with her hospitality. We will all miss her. My condolences to her family. Martin
M.
Christine was always interested in what was happening within the club and a
true club supporter throughout the many years of her involvement. She was
always willing to help on events, be they Autotests, night trials, 12-cars or
stage events and was upset not to be able to run the passage control at
Rockingham last year due to her increasing health problems. She was a
strong woman and it was amazing that she was still able to attend events
with her caravan and cope with jobs given to her so competently. At the many
after Club coffee nights, she not only produced coffee and biscuits but often

some archive or puzzle to keep us amused! Her enthusiasm and interest over
such a long period will be difficult for anyone to follow. She will be sadly
missed. Tony, Val and family.
“Very sad news everyone had a place in their heart for Christine, she will be
sorely missed”
“Always thinking of others & making strangers feel welcome”
“I can only echo everybody's thoughts on this very sad news. Christine was a
very special lady and will be much missed, but also much remembered”
”She should be an inspiration to us all, in fact, I don't doubt she is already
busy setting up a time control on some distant star”
You will always be with us on our events Christine!
All who knew Christine were invited to attend her funeral on Saturday 31st
March at the Chilterns Crematorium in Amersham, which was followed by a
reception at Christine's home, St Joseph's.
Joe said, “My Mother would not have wanted us to be sad for too long, so
please attend in celebration of her life and with fond memories. Christine requested no flowers at her funeral, but welcomed donations in support of either of her chosen charity - The Caister Volunteer Lifeboat Service in Norfolk
(cheques to Caister Lifeboat) or The Peace Hospice, Watford, where she
died. Cheques can be forwarded to Joe at Christine's address or sent to
James Peddle, 10 Moneyhill Parade, Rickmansworth WD3 7BE.
Christine would have thoroughly enjoyed the day, which we know she had
some planning in. The Funeral service was a very personal account of a very
special lifetime, some things we already knew, but some we didn’t, but it was
definitely a celebration of a long, challenging, but happy life. We all spent a
lovely few hours in her beloved garden, remembering where those “Cuttings”
came from etc.

Our heartfelt condolences go to Christine’s family and friends.

some cars on a club stand at a show. About 4 cars would be good, and there
will be live bands ,BBQ etc.

of the event, the club is able to have a stand at the show, so please let me
know if you would like to attend.
Saturday 1st & Sunday 2nd September

with the running of the weekend activates - any help would be
very gratefully part full day or 1 day.
I’m not sure if everyone knows, but there is NO Richard Burns Memorial Rally

MCAC.Net &
Club Magazine Distribution
As most of you know, Brian Catt operates a Net News using member's e-mail
addresses. This allows the club to communicate messages, appeals and
reminders in the most efficient time scale.
If you are not receiving these Net mails and would like to, please e-mail him
on [email protected] to be added to the lists. All messages are sent as
blind copies to prevent copying of individual addresses and no attachments
are involved. Some people may need to adjust their Spam filter to allow these
messages, but most get them without this step.
As per the detailed explanation in the Ed’s Bit, we also need your email address to distribute an electronic copy of the club magazine from the next issue, so make sure Brian knows!!
