Around Your Club
Time is running out on our Spring “Framily” Membership Drive! We are
offering a great springtime membership special, which will benefit you and your
friends. Call your friends, have them call their friends, and get everyone you can
into the Club to join! This is the time when you, the Member, have an even bigger
incentive to help bring in new members. Not only will you get that warm, fuzzy
feeling for doing something nice for a friend, you will also be helping to keep our
dues down by increasing the overall dues base, but best of all you get a $500.00
BYC credit for yourself and each member you sponsor will receive $500.00 off of
our already low Initiation Fee!
If you don’t know someone who is ready to commit to a regular membership,
suggest they try our Summer Membership Program. It runs from June 1,
2014 – September 30, 2014. The Initiation Fee is $461.71 ($450.00 plus $11.71
tax), Membership Dues are $410.61 ($385.62 plus $24.99 tax), and the Food/
Beverage Minimum is $280.00 for the four month period. All fees are plus 6.5%
sales tax. If your friend becomes a member during the Summer Membership
Program period, the minimum will be adjusted accordingly. The initiation paid
from the Summer Membership, will be applied to the Full Initiation if, and when,
the Summer Member converts.
Summer membership can only be used 2 times in a lifetime, and the initiation
fee paid is applicable to the full initiation at the transition. Our Summer
Membership is not a full membership, the individuals cannot vote, hold office, or
take advantage of our reciprocal clubs, but they can utilize our Club for all of the
fun family events that we do in the Clubhouse and around the pool!
Serving Manatee County for more than 45 years
APRIL 2014
We are heading into spring, and eyeing summer right around the
corner. Now is the time to call Wendy and set up those spring and
summer parties. We excel at doing birthday parties, anniversaries, pool
parties, office parties, surprise parties, weddings, rehearsal dinners, bah
and bar mitzvahs…just about any type of party you can think of really!
And, remember, you can sponsor a party for your friends. All you have to
do is make the introduction. Wendy and our Culinary Team are eager to
take your visions and turn them into reality!
New in April, we are changing up our Wednesday night offering.
Starting in April, Wednesdays will be Midweek Mexican. We will offer our
popular Taco Bar for only $9.99! And we will offer margarita specials, and
Gigante Margaritas, too!
Also in April, we will be busy with our First Friday and member favorite,
Seafood Buffet along with a special Sailor’s Box Wine event and Super
Sunday Brunch, all the first weekend! We have our Fat Boy Friday BBQ
night, the Hilarious Comedy Night and Ladies at the Helm Sail Regatta
the second weekend. The third week of April brings us the Great Mates,
Buns, Bread and Bunnies event, Shrimp & Suds, our Kids Easter Party
and Egg Hunt, and our very well attended Easter Sunday Brunch. We
round out the month with a Wine Tasting, our Fried Chicken Friday, and a
full day of tradition with the BYC Memorial Service, Blessing of the Fleet,
and our free to our members Founders Day Cookout. Lastly in April, we
are hosting the 5th Annual BYC Golf Classic at River Wilderness Golf and
Country Club! I am tired, just typing this!
As we have over the last four years, we will be sending out a list of Golf
Reciprocal Clubs at the end of April, with your statements. We are in
the process of hammering down some more great golfing opportunities
for you. We expect to finalize our May-October list to around 18 clubs,
including the 4 we have year round reciprocity with! This is a great benefit
for our full members. Not only can you use our great BYC, you can also
use the 36 FCYC Clubs, the 18 or so local Golf & Country Clubs, and some
700 clubs around the Country through the Yachting Clubs of America!
Spring and summer are great times to be a member of the BYC!!! See you
all around the Clubhouse! – Ken

Ken Sosville
Power Fleet
February’s Power Fleet’s dinner/meeting had 14 people in attendance. Those in
attendance were Ken & Jackie Sosville, Fred & Mary Smith, Ray & Elayne Barr, Jeff &
Pat Poulson, Ron Ciamaga, Roger & Jenifer Boldizsar and Tony & Karen Vanderburg
with a guest. February’s $35 gift certificate was won by Roger & Jennifer Boldizsar.
February’s cruise to Twin Dolphin Marina was on the 14th thru the 16th. The
following boats with their crew who attended this cruise: “Bold Move” with Roger
& Jennifer Boldizsar and their guests, Tom & Kathy Mayer; “My Turn” with John
& Bonnie Manny; “Mary’s Choice” with Fred & daughter Pam Smith (Mary was
home sick); “Island Time” with Jeff & Pat Poulson; “Polly Esther” with Tom & Janet
McGannon; and “Snowman” with Ken & Jackie Sosville.
Friday started off with great weather as Mary’s Choice and Snowman arrived
before noontime. The remaining boats arrived later in the afternoon. Friday night’s
group dinner (Valentine’s evening) was at Pier 22 in a banquet room with everyone in
attendance to help celebrate the event and to celebrate Jeff & Pat Poulson’s wedding
anniversary.
Saturday morning started off cold but clear skies. Around 9:30 that changed when
the front moved in with winds guesting to almost 50 mph. Most of the cruisers were
still on their boats recuperating from the night before. Later in the morning after the
winds died down to around 18 to 20 mph, most of us went to the farmers market. Some
of us hung around the Main Street bars in the afternoon while others went back to the
boats and played a few games of LCR. The Boldizsar’s and their guests had an early
dinner and then attended the play “Shrek” at the Players Club. Some of the group had
dinner at Pier 22 while the rest of us had dinner at FAV’s Italian Restaurant.
Sunday, everyone kind of left earlier than normal to make that long trip back to their
home ports, the BYC and Riviera Dunes.
Don’t forget the Power Fleet meetings are the second Tuesday of every month. Make
your reservations early. A $35 BYC gift certificate will be given away during the Power
Fleet meeting.

Investor’s Club
Jack Gorman, Treasurer
After 2 meetings, the BYC Investment Club
seems to be very popular. We have had an
average of 20 attendees at each meeting and a
survey indicates that they are pleased with the
dinner meeting format.
The direction of the Club is toward
education with a format of “Guest” financial
professional speaker and a “basics” piece led
by a club member. The talks are incorporated
into a dinner meeting format. During the
cocktail and dining periods, members also
have the time to exchange their investment
ideas with each other. We have already had
guests speak on the 2014 Economic Outlook
and the Use of Exchange Traded (ETF) funds
in a portfolio.
Our basics talks have included “Know
Thyself” and “Building a Portfolio.”
A survey of attendees indicated the
following topics will be put on our agenda:
Evaluating Investments
Asset allocation
Forecasting techniques
Taxation
Sector Allocation
Value Investing
Dividend Investing
Mutual funds
Using Limit & Stop Orders
Using Market Indexes
International Stocks & Bonds
Retirement planning tools
Income investing
Real Estate REITs
Common & Preferred Stocks
Social Security
Efficient Portfolio Theory
Growth investing

Email addresses of members are not shared and sales pitches are not allowed.
Meetings are on the 4th Wednesday at 6:30. The next meeting is March 26.

I hear that some members have already
found some fish that they think will make
them tournament champions. Hopefully,
everyone is getting ready because this will be
fun for all!
I have been getting some great fishing
reports and photos. The snook are hungry
and the redfish are schooling. The water
temperature is still a bit on the cool side, so the
close to shore and bay grouper bite is still red
hot. BYC Member Taylor Chadsey sent over
some photos of a great hogfish trip he went on
last month and I am hearing reports that the
fishing has been great farther offshore. So get
out there and do some fishing! When you do,
send over your photos and don’t forget to enter

Sail Fleet
John Izmirlian
Racing - On Saturday March 8th, BYC hosted its annual Around
Egmont Key Classic Regatta. Ten of the boats competing were from
BYC and the others from local area yacht clubs. The morning start
offered extremely light winds, which left the boats at the mercy
of the tide. The afternoon breezes of 10-14 knots filled in around
1400 hours and added a nice finishing touch for those boats that
persisted.
In the spinnaker class LIL gringo (John Izmirlian) barely
streaked by Silver Streak (Tom Grubb) for First Place honors.
This was an up and down tilt with Silver Streak leading LIL gringo
several times during the event and a very close finish of only 34
seconds separating the two boats over the seventeen mile course.
In non-spinn class, Windcaller ( Joe McClash) led overall
followed by Esconditas (Frank Wendt), Kate (Bill Casey), and
Special K (Bob Klement).
Visiting multi hulls Catraption (O.H. Rodgers) and Merlin (Phil
Smith) took the top two spots in their division.
Cruising - Our February cruise to Venice
Yacht Club was led by Mark and Lavonne
Dimitroff. Eight boats with 16 crew had a breezy
trip inside but were rewarded with a cozy cocktail
hour aboard Cricket. Dinner in the Club was
excellent as usual. After a potluck breakfast/
brunch Saturday morning, everyone was on their
own, biking or strolling to town for shopping
and lunch. Saturday evening we ventured to the
Charles Clifton
Crow’s Nest for another memorable dinner and
back to the Club for a private viewing of the movie, All Is Lost, starring
Robert Redford. Sunday’s return trip outside was very foggy with
visibility down to 500 feet, but with radar and horn, we safely sneaked
back into Passage Key Inlet without incident. Some boats came inside
preferring less fog in exchange for Sunday traffic and bridge openings.
We have had wonderful Sail Fleet Cruises in the last few years. Much
of the success is because each cruise is led by a different captain, who
arranges the dockage, dining venue and other activities. The variety has
been excellent. We have had varied events from pub crawls, boat shows,
gourmet restaurant trips to other entertainment. Please join us at our
Silver Streak leading LIL gringo in the Around Egmont Key Regatta.
Special thanks to the race committee of Chuck Goes (SPYC) and Peter
Robinson (CYC) and our members Kathy Kalitta (yacht Kathy) and
JoAnn Stewart (yacht JoJo) for providing the support power boats for
the event. We sailors do appreciate their work.
MARK YOUR CALENDARS…
SUNDAY, APRIL 13th, 2:00 is our
annual LADIES AT THE HELM race.
The rules are simple…only a lady may helm the
boat during the race. This is a fun event and all club
members are encouraged to participate. All women
who participate receive a free souvenir trophy.
monthly dinner meeting to learn
more about coming along!
April’s a busy month so our
cruising event will be an overnight
anchoring out. As we watch the
weather, more details will be
forthcoming online. If you’re
not on the email list for instant
updates, contact Charles at
[email protected].
On April 2, our meeting time
will be devoted to a program by
Orion returning home in dense fog Rick and Julie Petersen, past BYC
members and now world cruisers.
Rick will speak about their cruise from BYC, across the Atlantic and
northern Europe with special emphasis on their Norwegian segment.
They are now preparing to extend their cruise to St. Petersburg, Russia.
Rick is a great speaker for boaters and is speaking on a favorite subject.
The whole Club will find this interesting and there will be a special
menu. Please join us…be sure to call for reservations.

This and That
Wine Line
Members have been enjoying the Clos du Bois
special purchase we made consisting of five
different red and four different white varietals
for only $11.00 and $14.00 per bottle. Yes, this is a really great
deal; no, we can’t beat Publix prices. Yes, you can get this wine
and many others we sell at grocery and liquor stores for less
than we sell it for…likewise, for beer and liquor, too. Those retail
outlets don’t have to cover the costs to serve the beverages, keep in
stock nice glasses, cover costs of some wine going bad because we
opened a bottle and maybe don’t sell it all by the glass, etc. Believe
me, there are no other clubs or restaurants out there selling the
Clos for what we are. I hope you enjoy it as we will keep our eye
out for the next big deal, so we can transition into something
fun for summer! Remember, pour, swirl, nose, drink, swish and
swallow! Yum! - Ken

What a gorgeous spring we have been having. Our Fuel sales
are up, up, up, and I thank you all for keeping us busy. We are
looking for ways to make your late spring and early summer great.
We plan to add the capability to purchase refreshments at the
Fuel Dock. Certainly, most members can go to the Tiki Bar on the
weekends. But for those who don’t want to and for those who fuel
during the week, this will be a great opportunity to for us to service
you!
Remember as we get busy, hail us on VHF channel 16 or call
us on the Dock Master cell phone at 941-374-2310. The “blue
area” of the Transient Dock (closest to the boat ramp) is not for
overnight mooring. This is an area we hold for drop in boating
and loading and unloading. Likewise, we try to keep this area clear
for the Sailboat hoist. During the weekends, even if the wall looks
empty, we are probably waiting on boats that have reservations.
Whenever you pull in and tie off, even if just for lunch or a snack,
let us know please. We really need to know whose boat is where
and where on the property you are, so we can contact you if we
need to move you. Thanks for your understanding and for helping
us be efficient. - Brent Mitchell, Dockmaster
