Welcome to the fall winter edition of the St. James
Village Biz newsletter.
In our most recent newsletter, I wrote that you would
see some physical transformation of Portage Avenue
by end of the summer. While my prediction was a bit
optimistic on the timing, I’m sure you have all noticed the
construction on the north side sidewalks. Our Streetscape
Chair provides the details of the project in her report.
Over the summer, the annual planting of the flowers
went off without a hitch and I am pleased to report that
we had no reports of vandalism to the flower beds.

The Biz also held our second annual “Meet and Greet
BBQ” on the lot beside Mortgage Logic which was
well received with approximately 40 Biz members in
attendance. We hope to hold the BBQ again in 2014.

A wonderful, most colorful Fall Season has now left us but
the start of Phase One of our Streetscape Living Canopy
Project will continue on. As some of you may have you
have noticed, we started construction for 7 of the Street
Tree Plazas for the St. James Biz Area. The First Phase
includes live trees, planting beds and seating in a Plaza on
six city blocks along the North Side of Portage Avenue.
Some of the D Planters on the North side were moved
to the South side of Portage as well as to other North
side non-plaza locations to help cover more of our BIZ
with flowers for next year.
We at the St. James Biz are looking forward to providing a
Living Canopy to help promote our community which will
now offer enhanced walking, socializing and resting areas
from which to enjoy our neighborhood. We would like
to thank two of our partners on this project, the City of
Winnipeg, and the Province of Manitoba because without
them this project could not have happened.
