How It Works
The M-VAC simultaneously
sprays a DNA-free buffer
solution onto a surface of
interest while a vacuum is
applied around the spray
pattern to collect the buffer and
extracted particles in an attached
sample collection bottle.
The user then filters the solution
through a 0.45 micron filtration
system to separate the DNA
from the buffer. Once filtration
of the sampled solution is
complete, the filter can be
packaged and submitted to the
crime lab for DNA processing
using their preferred method.
DNA Collection
M-VAC DNA Retrieval System
The M-VAC DNA Retrieval System uses a patented
wet vacuum and separation filter to retrieve
DNA from all types of surfaces, including
porous (clothing, dry wall, bedding,
towels, etc.) and non-porous surfaces.
This method of retrieval has been proven,
through independent studies, to capture
significantly more DNA than traditional
swabbing methods on porous surfaces.
M-VAC is also a great method for
DNA retrieval for large sampling
areas where the potential DNA
evidence is not visible.
The M-VAC includes an attached heavy-duty
cart for transport and use at the crime scene.
DNA collection of suspected physiological
fluids from porous surfaces such as clothing.
The sterile,
DNA-free buffer
solution comes
in hermetically
sealed bags
and is sold in
cases of 10
each.
Touch DNA collection from non-porous surfaces
is possible with the M-VAC.
The Collection Head and Bottle are shipped in a hermetically
sealed package and sold in cases of 10 each.
After area of interest is swept for DNA, pour
the collected buffer solution through the filter,
seal filter in provided breathable pouch with
integrity tape, and send to lab for analysis.
4
The DNA Filtration Unit comes hermetically sealed and is sold with a breathable evidence pouch and
(2) evidence intergrity strips for sealing the filter and pouch after DNA collection.

Case History & Independent Studies
The M-VAC System was used in a case involving a homicide/possible sexual
assault of a female child victim found partially submerged in water. Her body
was recovered within 10 hours of the last confirmed contact with victim; thus,
victim was not in water for an extensive period of time. Victim shows signs of
sexual penetration including extensive trauma to vaginal area. Examination by
both coroner and subsequent serological testing revealed no sign of semen
and/or spermatozoa, limiting potential for probative DNA testing.
An independent forensic lab received panties removed from the victim.
With no potential sperm cells to test, the panties were processed for touch/
contact DNA using the M-VAC. Male DNA was recovered from the crotch
area of the panties. Despite an extreme ratio and limited male DNA, a partial
Y-STR profile (9 of 17 loci) from a single male contributor was obtained after
consumption and subsequent amplification of the male component.
In the Boston University study,
traditional biological collection
methods, including the double
swab method and taping, are
compared to M-VAC through
the collection of different
volumes of blood (0.075 - 75
μL) on denim, carpet, and tile.
Results from Boston University
Study for blood on denim
Subsequent testing excluded investigators and crime scene personnel as the
source of this profile.
The lab’s opinion was that the male DNA profile obtained from the evidence
is likely from contact with the perpetrator during the assault. Processing with
the M-VAC allowed the minimal amounts of male DNA to be collected despite
overwhelming female/victim DNA, exposure to the effects of water and
limited amount of cellular material (contact and/or “touch” DNA). A suspect
was identified through the DNA profile and the resulting case is now in the
court system for adjudication.
Independent evaluation studies have been completed by Boston University
and Sorenson Forensics that conclude that the M-VAC method of DNA
retrieval collects significantly more DNA than traditional swabbing methods
on surfaces typically encountered in the processing of violent crimes.
In summary, in the Sorenson Forensics study the M-VAC was compared to
the double swab method in the collection of saliva and blood DNA material
from cotton, denim, polyester and nylon. The M-VAC collected more DNA
material with saliva on all the materials. It collected more DNA material with
blood on every material except for polyester. With saliva, it collected 41 times
more DNA material from polyester and 96 times more from nylon. The M-VAC
procedure provided DNA of quality suitable to obtain excellent DNA profile
results using a commonly used STR multiplex kit (AB Identifier). No inhibitors
or sample degradation attributable to the M-VAC was detected. No DNA
inhibition was detected in any of the M-VAC samples quantified by QPCR.

comPHOTOfit® + COLOR III
Facial Composite Software
The above composite was created using the five basic feature types along with accessory eyeglasses, mustache and
beard. A scar was added afterward using the Wrinkle/Scar Tool.
Photo-Realistic, Color Composites
An eyewitness description of a suspect is often the only lead an investigator
has, and the recall of a witness is better when he or she has realistic, color
images from which to choose.
comPHOTOfit®
+ COLOR III utilizes extensive databases with hundreds of
features from actual color photographs of people—billions of combinations
are possible! With comPHOTOfit®, you build composites using five basic
components: foreheads, eyes, noses, mouths and chins. The resulting
composites look like people, not generic sketches!
Customize Your Composite
Once you’ve assembled the five basic features of your composite, you
can further modify it with accessory databases such as headwear, glasses,
mustaches, beards, and an impressive arsenal of image editing tools. Adding
wrinkles, scars, bruises and beard stubble is an easy task. You’ll also be able
to warp, nudge, adjust or change color, and lighten or darken portions of
your composite, allowing you to fine-tune the image to meet your witness’s
description.
New and Improved Features with Version 3
It’s now even easier to turn an eyewitness
description into a photo-realistic, color
composite with comPHOTOfit® + COLOR III.
10
The look and feel of comPHOTOfit® + COLOR III has been enhanced to make it
more user friendly, including tabbed menus, automatic merge, multiple levels
of redo in case you change your mind, and “fly over” text descriptions of all of
the control buttons. There are new tools, like layer erase, where you can edit
any of the layers without affecting others. The improved Capture Tool makes
capturing features from existing photographs simpler.

Ballistics Investigation
LTF200 Advanced Laser Trajectory Finder Kit
Whenever a firearm is discharged, it leaves evidence behind including
cartridges, gunshot residue, and physical artifacts where the projectile passes
through or embeds itself in surrounding objects. Trajectory analysis uses
these artifacts to reconstruct, through observation and measurement, how a
shooting most likely occurred, and determine the originating location of the
shooter.
Use the penetration rods, markers, strings, and
laser to show angle of entry, trajectory, and
bullet path. Green laser, yellow and orange

Penetration rod, SirchMark™ marker held by
Stikki Dot identifying location and angle of entry
The new LTF200 Advanced Laser Trajectory Kit incorporates advances in
lasers and digital measurement to provide the officer with the most accurate
measurement and tools available today. This kit allows a single investigator
to do a detailed ballistics or shooting reconstruction.
Measure angle of entry with the No. DRP10

LTF200 includes four anodized aluminum penetrating rods, centering cones,
and grommets. These are placed in holes created by the projectiles, allowing
the investigator to photograph the trajectory, measure the various angles of
entry, and also attach strings or lasers to further reconstruct the path of the
bullet. In addition, there are four more rods that can be used to extend the
penetration rods, allowing the rods to be passed through hard to string areas,
such as car seats. The centering cones are held in place by rubber grommets,
which are easy to install and much harder to lose than the small o-rings
typically found in these kits.
LTF200 contains two digital angle finders, the DMANGLE, which with an
adapter, can be placed directly on penetration rods to determine the angle
of trajectory, and the DRP10, a digital protractor that measures any angle by
simply placing the bottom edge at the measurement point, and opening the
other leg to the point of measurement. The digital read out is accurate to 0.2
degrees.

Ballistics Investigation
Finally, for documenting the trajectory path beyond the rods, the kit provides
for two methods, stringing and laser trajectory. For stringing, LTF200 includes
elastic string, which when tightened does not sag like conventional string.
Included are 6 spools (2 bright yellow, 2 bright orange, 1 neon green, and 1
highly reflective silver). For laser trajectory, LTF200 contains two lasers, a red
laser and a new 5 mw green laser. The lasers can be attached to the trajectory
rods or placed on an included tripod mount to project the path of the bullet.
The kit also includes marking cones and triangles for identifying shell casings
or other evidence locations, adhesive decals printed with a 2 cm scale and a
blank space for custom manual labeling of bullet holes, a tape measure, and
reusable Stikki-Dots and Stikki-Clips that can be used to attach markers and
string to any smooth surface. This kit is contained in an easy to carry and easy
to deploy 5.11 Tactical Rush 24 backpack, and contains everything needed to
execute a sound ballistics or shooting reconstruction.

NARK® II Presumptive
Narcotic Field Tests

SIRCHIE ®
NARK® II Presumptive Drug Test Pouches
NARK® II drug identification pouches have the capability of presumptively
identifying several families of substances suspected of being abused drugs.
Designed to function as a transportable narcotics laboratory, NARK® II
pouches are available for use wherever the need for their capability might
arise. Each of the tests is comprised of one or more chemical reagents.
When a predictable color or series of colors occur within a specific testing
sequence, a positive confirmation may be presumed.
Presumptive identification is generally recognized within our legal
system as a component of probable cause. There is no drug identification
system presently in use which completely eliminates the occurrence of
false positives and false negatives. A forensic laboratory is required to
qualitatively and quantitatively identify an unknown substance.
