Ponca City tourist attractions will be set up in the State Capitol, 4th floor Rotunda
promoting our city on Wednesday, May 15th from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. We hope
to have all of our local attractions participating.
Items promoting our city tourist attractions will be given away during the day
and information on our events will also be distributed.
Every legislator will receive a bottle of Head Country BBQ Sauce as a gift
from Ponca City.
We are excited to show the state legislature and capitol staff what we have to
see and do in Ponca City! This day also highlights to the state that tourism is a
major industry right here in Ponca City!

27th Leadership Ponca City Class to Graduate!
The 27th Class of Leadership Ponca City will graduate on Thursday, May 9th at the
Marland Mansion. The dinner and graduation program will start at 6:30 p.m.
This year’s class has 18 participants. Their class project was the successful “Standing
Tall to Help All” food and clothing donation drive. It was incredible!!
Natalie Fraser, 2013 Chamber Chair, will address the group during graduation.
Cost to attend is $28.00 per person and you must RSVP by phoning 765-4400 on or
before May 3rd.
The 2013 Leadership Chairs for this important project include Rhonda Stolhand,
Joe DeNoya, Arlene Stauffer and MaryBeth Moore. They were assisted by Chamber
staff, Nancy Kruckeberg.
Rhonda Stolhand will be recognized as she will be ending her term as a Leadership
Chair.
Education and Workforce Committee
Host School Support Staff Appreciation Reception
The Education and Workforce Development Committee of the Ponca City Area
Chamber of Commerce will host a come-and-go reception for all School Support Staff
on Wednesday, May 8th from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. with refreshments and door prizes.
School “support staff ” includes anyone that is not an in-room educator.
This fun, come-and-go event is in recognition of the work these individuals do for our
students everyday. It is hoped that all support staff will take time out of their day and
come by the Chamber Office, 5th and Grand, and let us honor them with some super
refreshments and a chance to win some outstanding door prizes.
If you would like to donate a door prize please bring it by our Chamber Office.

Leadership Alumni to Have Luncheon!
Ponca City Leadership Alumni will have a luncheon on Friday, May 17th at Zino’s located at
2nd and Cleveland, from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Leadership Alumni officers, Katy Muller and
Maggi Hutchason, invite everyone to attend this fun luncheon.
This is a great opportunity to join other classmates and also discuss Leadership Alumni
projects including Ponca’s Big Clean-up, Teen Pep PIE partners, and Backpacks for Kids.
A Chamber update will also be given.
Both Katy and Maggi are working hard to reconnect Ponca City Leadership Alumni and
provide both educational luncheons and fun socials for all to enjoy.

Spring is a very busy time at the Chamber. Our Leadership class will wrap up this month with their
graduation on May 9. This year’s class has many outstanding people and they just completed their
class service project. The “Standing Tall to Help All” project collected many items for many local
agencies in our community.
Ponca City Leadership Alumni had Ponca’s Big Clean-up the same weekend. Over 400 volunteers
cleaned up 45 properties for those that needed assistance. This clean-up project is in its second year,
and was the service project of last year’s class.
In its 27th year, we should be very proud of the leaders and the projects that have emerged from this
Chamber program. I personally am very grateful to have been through this class. It introduced me to
the ways to get active in our community and has given me many opportunities to make a difference in
Ponca City.
I would like to thank all of the businesses that have agreed to sponsor the Chamber Auction. Since
we only have one fundraiser every other year, it is very important to have a successful auction. We are
actively seeking auction items now. Our focus is to offer amazing experiences in addition to donated
items. If you have something unique to offer, please let us know. Lee Evans donated 2 Club Level
seats to any OSU Football game this upcoming season, with the exception of the OSU-OU game. I
am sure that will be a memorable experience for some Cowboy fans! If you have something amazing
of your own that you'd be willing to donate, we'd love to have it!

The smell of fresh cut grass is always a sign to me that spring has officially arrived. The April Showers will soon
cause the May Flowers to bloom. Spring is a great time for Ponca City Tourism as it is beautiful travel weather,
which means lots of visitors stopping in to inquire about all the hidden beauties in Ponca City. The Visitor Center
recently greeted visitors from around the state of Oklahoma and other states including Minnesota, North Dakota,
Texas, Oregon and Arkansas. We also had the opportunity to greet visitors from Scotland during April. It is always
fun to meet these folks and hear about their plans while visiting Ponca City.
I recently had the opportunity to give a presentation to the Ponca City Noon Lions about Ponca City Tourism. It
was a great opportunity to speak to approximately 35 of Ponca City’s longtime residents and to educate them about
the accomplishments of Ponca City Tourism during 2012, as well as all the great things there are to do and see in
Ponca City. Each attendee received the latest Ponca City Tourism Visitor Guide along with a fun promotional gift
from Ponca City Tourism. Do you have your copy of the latest Ponca City Tourism Visitor Guide?
I shared with you last month that Ponca City Tourism was gearing up for the 2013 Spring Road Shows that were
scheduled to begin in April. Rich Cantillon recently had the opportunity to represent Ponca City Tourism at the
first road show held at American Fidelity in Oklahoma City on April 15th. He was able to promote Ponca City to
over 400 American Fidelity employees by providing each of them with the Ponca City Tourism Visitor Guide
along with a memento gift from Ponca City Tourism. It appears our Ponca City Tourism Visitor Guides are flying
out the door; don’t forget to get your copy!
I am traveling this week with the Oklahoma Tourism and Recreation Department to the 2013 Red Hat Society
International Convention in Atlanta, Georgia to promote Ponca City Tourism, as well as promoting the great state
of Oklahoma. I will be sharing all the unique things there are to see and do in Ponca City to over 1,500 Red Hat
Ladies who are ready to travel, relax, shop and just have a FUN time; all things Ponca City can provide!
Don’t forget Ponca City Tourism is preparing for our 6th annual Ponca City Day at the State Capitol on May 15th.
The event will be held on the 4th floor Rotunda of the State Capitol Building from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. We are
inviting all of our attractions, hotels and city departments to join us for this great event and represent Ponca City in
a GRAND way! If your attraction, hotel or city department is interested in attending please let me know today via

14th annual American Legion Golf Tournament presented by American Legion Post 14, the 20 th Annual Memorial
Golf Tournament presented by Hospice of North Central Oklahoma, the play “Little Shop of Horrors” presented
by Ponca Playhouse and Cruzin Grand presented by the Schooners Car Club of Ponca City.

TO BE A TRULY LIVABLE COMMUNITY

The predominant mindset in the United States for the past two decades is the nation is divided into two spheres, politically
at least, red states and blue states. The presidential election of 2012, however, shows clearly that it is now a rural vs. urban split. As
evidence, consider that in 2012 President Obama won only 20% of America’s 3,077 counties. You read correctly. Challenger Mitt
Romney carried 73% of America’s counties and on average Mr. Romney won these counties with a higher percentage of the vote.
It doesn’t take a social scientist or a math genius to figure out how Mr. Obama was still able to squeeze out a 50.6% edge in
the popular vote. The counties he carried were urban, which by definition means more densely populated. Mr. Romney was more
successful in less densely populated areas including Kay County.
This suggests that people in urban areas see the world much differently than people in non-urban areas. It is more likely
that this is a result of the influence of having more people sharing your living space as opposed to actual differences in people. But
people, we all know, are different and want different things.
I thought about this at an economic development conference held recently in a large, east coast city. I thought about it as I
walked around during breaks, looking at the large, “new urbanist” designs on apartment buildings which are supposedly so popular
this day. I thought about it as I noted how close these new developments were to transit stations, (“transit oriented” development)
and I thought about it as I sat in the coffee shops that are apparently required on every block. I thought about it, too, as I had no
trouble finding seats in these coffee shops and as I had the sidewalk to myself most of the time. I thought about it when I had to
be very, very careful crossing the street, lest I get run over by the cars driven by residents of this new walkable utopia.
I thought about it as I went to the airport, noting the mass of people commuting in from the suburbs. I thought about it as
I read a debate between a proponent of higher density living and a demographer who was simply pointing out that more people
continued to opt for the suburbs over the inner city, regardless of how “cool” or “hip” these new urban places were supposed to
be. I thought about it during several of the economic development sessions as the word “livable” was being thrown around like the
buzz words it has become.
You rarely hear anyone talk about making Ponca City more livable. That we are livable is something of a given here. Sure,
we want the community to continue to improve and have taken steps to insure that it does. Scores of communities look on with
envy at our aquatic center, our museums, our cultural amenities and so forth. There is little doubt there are additional amenities
that would make Ponca City more attractive but a limited population, a drastically changing retail landscape and skewed perceptions
of Ponca City as a “one horse town” (economically speaking) present challenges. The bottom line is that with a limited population,
you can only have so much.
Which begs the question, if Ponca City wants to grow, how do we attract some of these urban people who apparently want
a more “livable” environment?
There is no question that a large reason many people live in big cities is that there are more economic opportunities. It is a
challenge, at times, to recruit people to a smaller community for a job when they know that if that job doesn’t work out there are
not six other similar companies hiring for the level of skill and pay. It is equally a challenge when a spouse needs to work and is
concerned that even though a good job for their wife may exist in Ponca City, there does not appear to be much in their skills area
available.
Then there are those for whom the availability of a Starbucks on every corner is important. Others want to feel that they
are living in a “cool” place, regardless of the actual quality of life. Some are simply rooted where they are as their families have been
there for generations while others may not have the option to move.
We know that Ponca City has a great quality of life, at least as we define quality of life. We know that there are things we
would like to see added. We also know that we have to sell Ponca City to a world that largely does not know we exist, bucking the
head winds of an urban-centered media elite that largely (and wrongly) continuously churns out a message that non-urbanites,
(residents of red states) are unsophisticated.
Taking control of your destiny, something Ponca City has proven we can do, lies at the heart of a truly livable community.
It’s a great story to tell and there are apparently a lot of people who would be open to this message. When you have the chance to
tell the Ponca City story, take it, for if we don’t, who will?

Ponca Politics at City Hall
With Senator Fields and Representative Vaughan
The next Ponca Politics of the year with Senator Fields and Representative Vaughan will be held at City
Hall in the City Commission Chambers on Friday, May 24th starting at 11:30 a.m. if the legislature is not
in session that day.
Several important topics were discussed during our previous forums including state budget, education,
taxes, workers compensation, infrastructure and other state items.
These events are open to the public and are sponsored by the Governmental Affairs Committee of the
Ponca City Area Chamber of Commerce.
Remember, our forums with Senator Eddie Fields and Representative Steven Vaughan are re-broadcast
on the Ponca City Cable Channel 22 the following week.
We thank the City Staff for letting us use the Commission Chambers and for taping the forums.
