Dear Forester Colleagues and Orienteering Sportsman Friends!
As the host of the 22nd European Foresters’ Orienteering Championships I am
delighted to welcome you.
It’s a great honor that after 1998 and 2004 Hungary could host this long standing traditional event again. After Bugac and Eger/Szilvásvárad in cooperation
with the Hungarian Forestry Association and the Orienteering-Pécs Foundation
we try to do our best to organise a high-standard and memorable event in Pécs.
During the six days 350 competitors from 15 countries will line up to match their
preparedness and endurance. But these six days are not only about
competition. EFOL events are always special for us foresters to leave the
everyday’s treadmill; to meet friends not seen for long and to see our beloved
forests with a different eye.
I can assure you that also this year professional and cultural programs will be
held in beautiful natural environment and in attentive and friendly atmosphere. The
preparedness, dedication and hospitality of my organizer colleagues is a guarantee for this event,
which will have an effect on the international cooperation, personal and professional
relationships of the forestry specialties.
In this spirit, I would like to wish you successful, fair and good competitions! I am confident that
this EFOL event will generate good impressions and we could welcome you as guest at
Mecsekerdő in the future again.

Dear participants! Dear Colleagues!
In recent years the number of tourists, hikers and forest visitors has increased
significantly in Hungary. More and more of them are coming specifically for sports
in the woods. Runners, trail runners, cyclists, horse riders. “The forest is the largest
stadium” – this is the hungarian foresters’ message for all of you.
Welcome to you now in this Hungarian stadium! I hope beside the excitement of
sport and the competition you will also have the time and energy to get to know
the region's forests. In addition to natural assets you should get to know the forest
management practices, which preserve these values. Over the last century Hungary
doubled its total forested area, and we are confident that this work continues in the
future.
Our professional community, the Hungarian Forestry Association will celebrate its
150th anniversary next year. During this long period we have witnessed a lot of
good initiatives. The sports events organized for forester professionals belong to these good
initiatives which represent long-term values. EFOL and EFNS races develop friendships and
professional relationships as well. We are pleased that after many years we are again hosting an
important event of the European foresters’ community.

During the 22 year history of EFOL we have the privilege to be the first ones to visit
the forests in a country hosting the event already for the third time. This fact and
the entries from over 350 competitors from 15 countries is an evidence of the strong
EFOL tradition. We nevertheless have a challenge to increase the number of
participants and to expand our geographic area.
I can say with confidence that we shall once again derive satisfaction from the welltended forests around the scenic Orfű in the Mecsek mountains, benefit from the
presence of highly competent forestry professionals, enjoy social gatherings,
friendly people and excellent food, and, last but not the least, compete in a quality
orienteering event in all EFOL races: be it sprint or middle distance, individual or a
relay race.
I thank all the organisers of the 22nd EFOL and wish the entire EFOL family to

Parking: In the Youth Camp of Orfű – opposite the Mayor’s Office, and near the EC
Staff will be available at the EC Information Desk to answer any questions and hand out the
team packages. These should be collected preferably by the team leader. All teams must pay any
remaining charges before they can collect their packages. Payment is possible both by credit card and
cash in the Event Centre.

Identification
Please always wear your ID-card (badge). The badge gives you access to the competitions,
seminar, excursion, opening and closing ceremonies.
Parking
In the official parking areas, parking is only possible with the parking tickets. Parking tickets
can be collected at the Event Centre. Please place the parking passes on the windscreen in a
visible place during the whole period of the event.
The Assembly Areas are accessible on foot from the parking lot.

Rented SI card
Rented SPORTident cards (SI-cards) requested upon entry can be found in your competition
bag. A deposit of 40 EUR will be required at the EC for each rented SI-card. Please return the
SI-card to the Information Desk after your last race where you can reclaim the 40EUR deposit.
Team leaders meetings
There will be team leaders meetings in the evenings before the races in the EC.
Accommodation
Upon arrival at the Event Centre, our colleagues will show you where you can
find the reserved accommodation, they give you the invoice of the prepayment, and inform the accommodation about your arrival.
Meals are not provided at the accommodation (breakfast, lunch, dinner, etc.).
In case of a late arrival, or when the Event Office is closed, please contact us
at [email protected] or at +36 30 858 7265 in order to inform the
accommodation about your late arrival. You should leave your accommodation
until 10:00 on the departure day. We wish you a pleasant stay!
Meals
Take advantage of our organized breakfast and dinner services in the Event Centre (7677 Orfű
Széchenyi square 1). Tickets for breakfast and dinner are available at the EC, but are limited to
available places. In case you require catering services please indicate it at registration (until 11
August at latest).

Climate
In August in Pécs (200 m above sea level), you can expect temperatures from 20° to 34° Celsius
during the day. In the Mecsek, the climate can be the same at this time of year. Long periods
of rain are unlikely but quick showers may occur.

Let’s make orienteering, the “green sport”, really green
This competition is part of a project that aims to reduce the ecological
footprint of orienteering in Hungary. We encourage you to choose
environmentally friendly means of transportation when coming to
Pécs/Orfű. To reduce waste, you will receive a reusable cup before the
first day of the competition. Before each race please put it into the
designated cup holders in the refreshment area and use them after
finishing the course. No disposable cups will be available. Waste generated
elsewhere will be segregated. Please put plastics, organic waste, metal, paper and
other waste into the appropriate containers. Waste from the buffet will be
segragated as well - we ask you to pay attention to the rules. To further improve
environmental practice, you are welcome to enjoy meatless dishes at the buffet.

merged the W20 category into W21

2-leg relays: W14, W18, W65, M14, M18, M20, M65, M75, Open

We ask all team leaders to send the quantitative relay entries to
us before 05/08/2015.
The deadline for giving the names for the relay is 13/08/2015.

The relay entry forms will be available in the accreditation

Start bibs
Every competitor will be issued with a number bib which
must be worn on the chest for each competition.
Information on bibs will consist of the competitor’s
name, SI-card number, country, category, and start
times.
Clothes and Shoes
Start bib
Sprint, clothing: Shorts and running shirts are recommended. Dobbed spikes and spike shoes
are not allowed to be used.
Middle Distance and relay, clothing: Regular orienteering clothing with long trousers and leg
protection is recommended.
Shoe: dobbed spikes and spiked shoes are allowed to be used.

Terrains
The forest terrains are natural reserve areas. Please take extra care to keep the competition areas
clean.

The race takes place within
the old city walls of Pécs.
This is typical urban terrain,
with some moderate climbs.
The competition terrain is
the historical, old part of the
city with public parks, where
city life reflects a typical
weekend with open–air restaurants and cafés. Around
the Finish area, strong pedestrian traffic is likely to occur.
The courses reach inner
courtyards, underpasses and
crossings. We prepare a competition with a special atmosphere, offering a quick sightseeing.
One of the most famous and
definitely the most beautiful
terrain of the Mecsek Mountains awaits the competitors
of the Middle Distance competition. The terrain is located between 250 m and 400 m
above sea level. Many depressions (dolinas) – some of
which may be 25 m deep
characterize the terrain. The
mixed beech and oak forests
are of high runnability. A
dense path and forestry road
network among the depressions can assist navigation.
We would like to give the
competitors a real taste of
orienteering in the Mecsek
Mountains.
The competition terrain is a
hilly area at a height of 200380m, typical of the centre
part of the Mecsek Mountains. The Finish Area is located at the Forestry centre
and Mecsextrém Adventure
Park. Countless gullies, valley
systems of various size and
several depressions render
the terrain versatile thus presenting a challenge for navigation. The vegetation also
reflects the diverse nature of
the terrain with areas of recent fellings, elderly beech
forests, various deciduous
forests, with some undergrowth. The versatile terrain
has a dense path and road
network.

Maps
The maps have been drawn according to IOF map norms. Maps are digitally
printed.
Sprint: 1:4.000 / 2.5m (ISSOM 2007). Surveyed in 2011, revised in 2015.
Middle Distance and Relay: 1:10.000 / 5m (ISOM 2000). Surveyed in 2011,
revised in 2015.
All competition maps are printed on pretex paper, thus they are unglossy and
fully waterproof. Protective plastic bags for the maps will be available at every
start area.
Maximum map dimensions are 315 x 210mm.
Control descriptions are printed on the front side of the maps and loose
control description (not water resistant) will also be available in the start
lanes.
All competition maps will be collected at the finish. After the last start of each
competition, the maps will be available at the Information Desk in the
Assembly Area. Each group leader should bring their Accreditation card to
collect them.

On the individual competition days, the last
control is an artificial well, marked on the map
by a black cross.
Each control is equipped with a control flag,
electronic punching stations (SPORTident
boxes), and a pin punch (for use in the rare case
that neither electronic unit works).
Time keeping system
During the event, the SPORTident timekeeping system will be used. In case the SI box
does not beep or flash, competitors must punch
on the map with the traditional pin punches
mounted on all controls. The team leaders have
to return the rented SI-card to the Information
Desk after the last race. The fee to be paid after
a lost SI card is 40EUR.

On-line results in the Finish area
We will be operating an experimental on-line results service in the finish area. A free WIFI
network will be accessible with any wireless capable device. You only need to have a WEB browser on it to use the service. The network will not be connected to the internet, only to our local
network for the live results.
Technical parameters:
SSID: result (open network, does not need any password)
Web address: type http://result.hu into the address bar of your browser, where you will find the
simplified WEB page of the event. Click on the on-line results link, choose your category and set
an update interval of your choice (30 sec, 1 min, 2 min, or 5 min). You cannot use the internet
with this method. Should you have any questions, please contact the organizers.
Refreshments
After every competition, water will be available
at the finish. Please do not forget to use your
“green glass”. Before each competiton, please
put it into the designated cup holders in the
refreshment area and use them after finishing
the course.
First Aid
There will be medical first aid facilities at the
finish of all the races.
Occurrence of ticks is likely in the forested areas. As they may carry bacteria, please pay attention to the prevention, scrutiny of bites and
removal of ticks.
Toilets, Showers
There will be toilets and showers in every Assembly Area. Please use “green” shower gels.

Forbidden Area
After 12.00 The West part of Pécs city centre is forbidden to
enter for every EFOL participants.
The Assembly Area can be approached from the East (Király st.)

Parking
The competition parking place is near the Knowledge Centre of
Pécs (GPS: 46.073874, 18.242701). This is where you can park for
free. Shuttle buses depart at 12:00, 12:30, 13:00 and 13:30 from
Centre for Learning to Széchenyi square. The shuttle service is
free of charge for the EFOL participants. Please leave in time!
You can park at other place too, but parking is subject to
payment in most areas.

Quarantine:
There is a quarantine zone in the Sprint competition. The competitors have to enter the
quarantine area before 14.00. There is a dressing room, toilets, refreshment, and a warm up area
inside the quarantine. Clothes will be returned from the quarantine to the Assembly Area.
Terrain:
Typical urban terrain with occasional labyrinths of narrow streets, inner courtyards and parks.
Altitude is between 130 and 190 m above sea level.
The area has restricted traffic, you can expect some cars moving in the area. Officials will assist
with traffic. Please be careful when running on the streets and always respect the traffic rules.
The use of spikes and dobbed spike shoes is not allowed.

Opening Ceremony and Prize Giving Ceremony
The Opening Ceremony and Prize Giving Ceremony will take place on
Wednesday, 12 August at the Széchenyi Square in Pécs just after the
Sprint Competition. Competitors are invited to join their fellow
countrymen and march behind their flag. We hope that you will all join
us in the Opening Ceremony of the EFOL. We ask all nations to delegate
one flag-bearer for the Opening Ceremony at Jókai Square!
Competitors should meet at the Jókai Square meeting point at 16:30 pm.
The parade will start at 17.00 pm and the Opening Ceremony and the
Sprint Prize Giving will end at around 18:00 pm.
Welcome speech will be given by:

Excursions
competition
General Information
The buses depart from the Event Centre at 8.00 a.m., the expected return is at about 5-6 p.m.
Apart from the professional programmes, during the excursions you will see some interesting
tourist spectacle of this area. The professional programmes will be lead by the foresters of
Mecsekerdő Co. Ltd. and they will offer lunch in the forest as well.
Please dress suitable for the weather and the occasion.
Excursion A: Zselic
The trip takes place at the Zselic hills, west of the Mecsek Mountains. During the forestry
programmes, visitors will see the deer farm of Bőszénfa, its collection of trophies and they can
also taste the local products of the farm.
Main topics of the excursion:
From clear-cut system to single-tree selection through transformation
The management of silver lime (Tilia argentea)
The importance and management of the sessile oak (Quercus petraea)
Natural regeneration methods of the sessile oak (Quercus petraea)
A ride on a former forest railroad will follow, and the excursion ends with the visit of one of the
most important historical places in Hungarian history. The excursion will take place at the
Forestry of Szigetvár, will be guided by Ferenc Sajgó, manager of the Forestry, and Attila Mohácsi,
forestry engineer.

Excursion B: West-Mecsek
This program will involve a trip to the PannonPower biomass
energy power plant near Pécs and to the centre of Pécs where
early-Christian burial sites are located from the 4th century. In
the afternoon the group will arrive for lunch to the Sás-valley and
will visit the forestry school and the forestry program.
The main topic of the excursion will be a continuous cover
forestry experiment which takes place in a beech-hornbeam-oak
stand. The excursion will take place at the Forestry of Árpádtető
with the guidance of János Szőnyi, manager of the Forestry and
Miklós Kincses, forestry engineer at the local Forestry.
Policy of Pannonpower: The use of safety equipment – helmet, Christogram, Early christian burial sites, Pécs
visibility vest – provided by Pannonpower is mandatory. Visitors
should wear appropriate clothes. Regardless of the weather, the wear of closed, flat shoes and
trousers is highly recommended. In the power plant, visitors are not allowed to take any photos
or record videos.
Excursion C: East-Mecsek
This group will visit the former Zsolnay factory, the historically
famous porcelain manufactory and the 1861 Gloves Manufactory in the
centre of Pécs. Afterwards, the forestry programme will begin with
some sub-topics regarding the history of the area, such as glassproduction in the forest or the industries in the small villages.
Main topics of the excursion:
Continuous cover forestry in beech stands in Mecsek Mountains
Transformation of even-aged structure based on the next generation
During the excursion the group can climb up to the look-out tower of
Cigány-hill and enjoy a beautiful sight from the mountain.
The excursion will take place at the Forestry of Pécsvárad and will be
guided by Atilla Nagy, manager of the Forestry Kálmán Partos and
Attila Szily, forestry engineers of the local Forestry.

Excursion D: Drava plain
This programme will begin with a pleasant boat trip on the river
Dráva and will be followed by the forestry programme in the local
Forestry.
Main topics of the excursion:
forest management in the Bükkhát forest reserve
managing pedunculate oak (Quercus robur) stands, natural
regeneration methods
After this, the excursion continues with lunch, wine tasting and
visiting the GERE winery at the Villány Mountains.
The excursion will take place at the Forestry of Sellye and will be
guided by Tamás Molnár, manager of the Forestry, and Gábor Miklós, forestry engineer.

The competition terrain is a hilly area at the height of
200-380m, typical of the centre part of the Mecsek
Mountains. Countless gullies, valley systems of various
size and several depressions render the terrain versatile thus presenting a challenge for navigation. The
vegetation also reflects the diverse nature of the terrain with areas of recent fellings, elderly beech
forests, various deciduous forests, with some undergrowth. The versatile terrain has a dense path and
road network.
