My reason to Relay!
Why Relay overnight?
In Honor of
James “Kurt” Sutton
I joined a Relay for Life Team this year in hopes
that someday cancer will be no more.
My husband Kurt was diagnosed in December
of 2014, with invasive melanoma. Excision surgery
and lymph nodes were removed and he is now
cancer free!!! I live in faith everyday that the
melanoma will not return.
This really hit me hard, I could not think of
anything for a month, but what we were facing.
When you hear the words cancer, radiation and
chemo, it feels like your heart is going to break into
and you cannot do anything but put it in God’s
James “Kurt” Sutton
hands.
I work at Cornerstone Funeral Home of
Nashville. We to often see cancer take people of all
ages from their families. Cancer does not discriminate.
I have met many families, that their loved one lost their battle with melanoma.
When I meet these families and they talk of their loved one, I remind myself just
how blessed my husband and I have been.
My husband can never wear short sleeves or go outside without a hat. He has
to keep covered all the time. So please stay out of the sun and tanning beds!!
Love yourself!!!
I love you Kurt, my friend, my companion and my love.
SOCIAL UNION MISSIONARY BAPTIST CHURCH – WHY WE RELAY
For over ten-years, Social Union has been a part of the Nash County Relay for Life.
Pictured are a few of our survivors who range from 1 year to 40 plus years as a survivor.
We relay in celebration of them. We relay in remembrance of love ones we have lost
and we relay to keep fighting. We honor our survivors for their fight and we praise
GOD for being there with them through it all. Social Union Baptist is in this fight and
we hope and pray that others will be with us. Join us on April 22nd to “Celebrate…
Remember… Fight Back”.

RELAY
SNAP-SHOT
By Sherry Harris
2016 Relay for Life of Nash County Event Co-Lead
The list of reasons why I relay are truly endless, but
for time, let me be more specific and share with you
a few special ones. Their names are Taylor, Trevor,
Collin, Addison, Carson, Ramsey and Bryton. These
seven names are my babies; (even though they don’t
think they are babies anymore) my sweet, precious
grandchildren. They are the reason that I talk “Relay”
all the time, not just one weekend every year. They
are the reason that I volunteer endless hours, selling
literally anything that someone else may want to buy,
hanging purple bows all over Nash County, and asking everyone I see to join me in my efforts to eradicate
cancer.
They are the reason that I will continue to do these
things to raise money for research to find a cure in hope
that they will never have to hear, “You have cancer.”
I have been Relaying for 22 years. Both my dad and
Granddaddy died from cancer….so you would think
that’s reason enough to want to find a cure –– Well
now…
Crystal Johnson and I have been best friends for
over 26 years, we have raised our children together
and the day she called me and said, ”My bladder infection didn’t go away with treatment so the doctors
did a CAT scan and I have a tumor in my stomach”
that day was life changing for me. A week later on
July 20, 2010 Crystal was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma B-Cell in her stomach and went thru
3 years of chemotherapy. That was a life changing day
for me.
When I think about how things have changed with
cancer research and treatments, (due in large to the
money we raise), since the deaths of my Granddaddy
and Dad, no one has to ask me twice to volunteer my
time, to raise money or to walk around a track at an
overnight event.
No other event is like it. Nothing will ever take
the place of that special, grateful, humble feeling that
I will inevitably get when I see my best friend, Crystal and all of our other survivors walking that first lap
at opening ceremonies or the stillness in the air during the luminary ceremony where survivors, as well
as those who have lost their battle with cancer are remembered.
From where I stand, raising money and walking
around a track are small prices to pay to help find a
cure for cancer. And just in case you need any other
reasons why I do this… Again….their names are Taylor Mills, Trevor Mills, Collin Tadlock, Addison Brumfield, Carson Tadlock, Ramsey Harris, and Bryton
Harris.
Please consider joining Crystal and me at the Nash
County Relay for Life on April 22 – April 23, 2016 as
all of our friends and family join us as we “Celebrate
another Birthday of all of our cancer survivors.”
Don’s Body Shop
salutes those that fought a courageous fight and those that
continue to be brave and courageous in the fight today!

RELAY FOR LIFE
Friday & Saturday
April 22-23
Rocky Mount
Athletic Complex
RELAY FOR LIFE starts at dusk and ends during the next day. The
light and darkness of the day and night parallel the physical effects,
emotion, and mental state of a cancer patient while undergoing treatment.
The RELAY is in full swing when the sun is setting. This symbolizes
the time that the person has been diagnosed as having cancer. The
day is getting darker and this represents the cancer patient’s state of
mind as their journey begins.
As the evening goes on it gets colder and darker, just as the emotions of the cancer patient does. Around 1-2 a.m. represents the time
when the cancer patient starts treatment. They become exhausted,
some sick, not wanting to go on, possibly wanting to give up. As a
participant, you have been walking and feel much the same way. You
are tired, want to sleep, maybe even want to go home, but you cannot
stop or give up.
Around 4-5 a.m. symbolizes the coming of the end of treatment
for the cancer patient. Once again they are tired, but they know they
will make it.
The sun rising represents the end of treatment for the cancer patient. They see the light at the end of the tunnel and know that life will
go on. The morning light brings on a new day full of life and excitement for new beginnings for the cancer patient. As a participant, you
will feel the brightness of the morning and know that the end of the
RELAY is close at hand.
When you leave the RELAY, think of the cancer patient leaving their
last treatment. Just as you are exhausted and weak, so is that person
after treatment. If you know a cancer survivor, this is their story. They
are your “Reason to Relay” and become our reason to Relay as well.
The many reasons I relay!

Let’s make cancer a thing of the past! THANK YOU!
By Barbara Gill
Why do I Relay? Good question. For
years after my father died of Leukemia, I
always purchased luminaries for him and
my grandmother who died 2 years before
my dad of stomach cancer. I really never
knew what Relay was. Many, many years
later maybe about fifteen. I was working
for a company that was a corporate sponsor For Relay for Life, and was asked to
get a team together. WOW, what a learn-
ing experience. But I have been Relaying
ever since.
In the few years I have been a Relayer, I
have seen how much dedication, time and
love goes into just the event. Volunteers
do it for the cause. About 4 years ago in a
Relay meeting, our ACS staff partner was
updating us on what some of the funds
go to and that night I found out there is
now a cure for the type of Leukemia that
my father had. I got real quiet for the rest
of the meeting. And if you know me that
don’t happen. After the meeting the staff
partner asked me what was wrong? I said
that was the type of Leukemia my father
had. The next day I called my mom and
told her about the meeting and her response was unforgettable “well it’s about
time” I will never forget that.
I relay because one day there will be a
cure for all cancers!! And then cancer will
be something that no one remembers. So,
come out and join us for fun and raising
money for a CURE!!!
Relay helps us celebrate more birthdays!
Crystal Johnson
2016 Relay for Life
of Nash County Event Co-Lead
I was first introduced to the Nash
County Relay for Life 18 years ago
when my best friend, Sherry Harris asked me to participate with her
on her company (Sprint) team at the
Nash County Relay for Life. Me, my
husband Wayne and my children
Amy and Heather joined Sherry’s
team that first year and remained
loyal team members for 12 years, we
sold hot dogs, slushies, popcorn, cotton candy and at the 25th Anniversary of Relay, we started selling Funnel Cakes. My whole family became
dedicated to finding a cure for cancer
and in 2008; we started our own family team “Huntin for a Cure.” We are
now known as the “Funnel Cake”
team, selling over 300+ Funnel Cakes
in one night at the Relay. My children and grandchildren have grown
up doing Relay so forming a family
team seemed like the logical thing to
do. Little did we know that in July of
2010, I, myself would be diagnosed
with Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma BCell in my stomach. I went through
3 years of chemotherapy and today I
remain cancer free. That has been almost 6 years ago and I couldn’t have
made it through this chapter of my
life without the support of my family,
my friends and my Relay family.
I look forward to seeing you as I
proudly walk in the Survivor Lap at
the beginning of our Relay on Friday
April 22nd, 2016 as I celebrate my 6th
birthday as a survivor.
Your support goes a long way!
By Frances Watson
Nash County Relay is in full force
which will be held April 22 and 23
at the Sport Complex Stadium in
Rocky Mount. The Kids Walk will
be at 5 p.m., opening ceremonies
will be at 6 p.m., then the survivors
are honored as they walk around
the track. If unable to walk, other
means will be provided. We want
to “honor you.” We walk all night,
food, games, music - we may doze,
but never close.
When 2016 Relay is complete,
yep - 2017 is started. We must find
a cure. But without your money and
support, we can’t reach our goal.
Please come out, there will be plenty
of food for sale, T-shirts and lots of
other items.
I have been in Nash County Relay
for 20 years and it is my prayers that
the word cancer will not be heard.
Since last year, I have lost a precious niece and a dear friend with
cancer. You see my reason for Relaying.
You may want to start a team for
2017. Just ask someone at the Relay.
I know you will be blessed and to
know you trying to find a cure. Any
amount you collect will help someone and you know it may be yourself.
Cancer doesn’t show favorites.
Babies, moms, dads, teenagers.
“Cancer” is an ugly word and it is
my prayers that one day we will not
hear, “you have cancer.”
Please give any amount. It will be
going to a good cause.
Crystal, Dale and I would like to take
this opportunity to thank everyone who
has helped us during this 2016 Relay
season. No job was too small… each
plays an intricate part in the success of
our Relay. To our corporate sponsors,
we certainly wouldn’t be able to meet
our goals without your donations. All of
our in-kind sponsors, we can’t say thank
you enough for all that you do to support our efforts. Our Relay Committee
Leads, we certainly couldn’t put on the
huge, fun-filled event that we do every
year without your passion and dedication. And, last but certainly not least, we
want to thank our community, the citizens of Nash County for your continued
support as we raise funds to support research in hopes of finding a cure for cancer.
Your 2016 Relay for Life Event Leads,

Joe Baker
We relay in honor of
Joe Baker
When I had the opportunity to have
a part in the Relay For Life event,
There was no way I could say no.
As many other families, our family
has been touched by cancer several
times. I am so honored to be able to
be a part of this event I will be doing
this in honor of my step dad Joe Baker
who had stomach cancer. He has been
cancer free for many years.
My husband and I own An Everlasting Memory Monument Company. In
this type of company you see so many
families going through the same
issues. It is my hope that one day there
will be a cure for this terrible disease.
Thank you Joe for all you do for our
family. We love you!

The Nash County Bark for Life
event honors the contributions of
canine caregivers. Canine caregivers include canine companions,
guide dogs, service dogs, rescue
dogs, therapy dogs, police dogs,
cancer survivor dogs and diagnostic dogs. All proceeds from the Bark
for Life event go to the American
Cancer Society.
Nash County raised $23,382.11 at
the 2015 event which was held in
Nashville at the Stoney Creek Environmental Park. The event typically
includes a Blessing of the Dogs and
other festivities such as a look-alike contest (dogs and owners), a
dress up contest for dogs, cancer
survivors walk a special lap with
their dogs, a best trick contest, musical sit contest, along with other
community services and special
productions.
A luminary service is also held at
the end of the event. Last year, participants released purple balloons
in honor of canine friends, cancer
survivors or those who lost their
lives to cancer.

WHY DO I RELAY?
Because nobody should ever lose their loved ones to cancer.

I joined Relay for Life to carry
on my brother’s memory
My name is Linda Weaver Pete with Linda’s Nail and Hair
Salon, this year I was asked to join Dancing Stars of Rocky
Mount for Relay for Life.
No was not an option, I needed to carry on my brother’s
memory. His sickness taught our family so much. So thru this
I will be Remembering my brother...Raymond “Ray” Weaver.
He was only 53 years old when he passed away from leukemia. He fought a long hard battle with dignity and courage.
He was always tough on the outside but a heart of gold on
the inside, he would do anything for anybody in need. He
was a avid Nascar and Corvette fan. He drove stock car #11
for several years and earned several trophies for his wins.
He has left behind a family and many friends that loves
and misses him deeply.

MY STORY
I relay for myself and
in memory of my Mom,
who lost her battle with
lung cancer in February of this year. I relay
for my friends affected
by this horrible disease,
I relay for you, your
mom and dad, your
grandparents,
your
spouse, friends as well
as others. I relay for
everyone.
For every story like
mine, there are thousands and thousands
of people that have to
endure things that I
couldn’t even imagine.
Because of your
donations, my bout
with cancer was a very
easy one. Because of
these donations, people
have a higher likelihood of beating cancer.
Because of these donations, I no longer have
to drink chalky contrast
for my CT scans every 3
months during the first
2 years, every 4 months
during year 3 and then
every 6 months for
the last 2 years, and
now I’m 100 percent
CANCER FREE.
I relay so that there
are more cases like
mine and far less cases
where people have to
suffer so much more
than I ever did. So that
one day we all can have
way more birthdays
than ever before.
The American Cancer
Society’s Relay For Life
is more than just an
event to me. It is my
personal opportunity
to help save lives from
cancer by supporting
the American Cancer
Society.
I EASILY won my
battle as I’m now 6
years cancer free, but
there are others who
didn’t unfortunately. I
am a 6-year Testicular
Cancer Survivor as of
October 2014. Cancer
has affected my life
for both the good and
the bad. No one ever
wants to hear they
have cancer, but it has
changed my outlook on
life greatly and made
me realize how many
others I can help who
are going through this
battle.
I’m confident my support goes a long way in
the fight against cancer and helping others
By Denise Batts
At first I joined Relay
because my Grannie had
colon cancer in 1984, followed years later by my
sister-in-law’s
mother
getting brain cancer,
then my Grannie having
bladder cancer. After
the first year of participating, I saw the many
people besides myself
and my family that are
impacted by this dreadful disease and so I kept
coming back. In 2004
my Dad was diagnosed
with lung cancer. It was
stage four by the time we
knew he had it. It was a
horrible year of watching him falter from the
strong,
hard-headed
man I had always known
to the shell of a man he
had become. Chemo and
radiation are the tools of
the trade to heal and kill
the disease that shred
the lives of so many
with cancer. They drain
the life out of our loved
ones but without these
devices, we may not get
the time we need to say
and do the things we
may not have had the
chance to do without the
time they give us with
the ones we love who
get stricken with this disease.
I just read a post on
Facebook about supporting causes such as
Relay for Life. It was
negative about where
all the money goes and
that those of us who do
this are foolish because
the organizations that
we support do not use
the money we raise for
the cause we support.
I say to that post and
those ideals that if only
$5 of the money I help
raise for cancer goes to a
family to help pay a hotel
bill while they wait for a
loved one to get chemo,
goes to a parent to stay
one more night with
their child getting radiation, to a research grant
on the verge of a breakthrough in lung cancer,
or anything else related
to fighting cancer, then
my time has been well
spent. Anyone can find
out where the money
raised goes and what
for, so do your research
before you make acusations.
I will support Relay,
I will donate my time
to help fight, and I will
continue to pray and ask
God to provide the cure
in His time that I know
He holds in his hands.
May God bless everyone
involved with Relay for
Life and bless anyone
fighting or supporting
someone fighting cancer.
I Relay because I am a two time breast cancer survivor
and I also honor all survivors and those who have lost the
battle with cancer. I walk and fundraise for Relay For Life
in hopes that my efforts will help provide a cure and no
one else will ever receive the unfortunate news of having
cancer. Praying for a cure for cancer!!!
