Our Mission
Maine Cancer Foundation improves the health
and well-being of Maine people by funding:
•Scientific laboratory, clinical and outcomes cancer research
•Professional and public education regarding knowledge and advances in cancer medicine
•Support programs for patients, survivors, their family and friends
100% of funds raised remain in Maine.
Since 1976, Maine Cancer Foundation has funded projects in Maine dedicated
to reducing and eventually eliminating the devastating impact of cancer. In the past
ten years, we have awarded nearly $4.4 million in grants to Maine organizations for
research, education and patient support programs. Three of them are highlighted in
this report, but all have made a valuable contribution to the fight against cancer.
We are proud of our Maine heritage and the fact that we invest all of our funds
here in our state. There are many individuals and organizations that have made a
measurable difference, and we are honored to be a part of that success. We look
forward to continuing this important work until cancer no longer devastates our
families, our neighbors, our workplaces. We hope we can count on your support

Research Grants
Maine is home to world-class research facilities and scientists who are studying
promising new ideas in cancer research. MCF focuses on funding the initial work
that will establish a study and enable it to qualify for larger, national grants.
In 2011, ten grants totaling $830,300 were awarded to cancer research projects
in Maine. After a competitive, peer-review process, 10 proposals were selected
from the 19 requests received by the Foundation. Scientists at Husson University,
Maine Institute for Human Genetics and Health, Maine Medical Center, MDI
Biological Lab, The Jackson Laboratory, and the University of New England will
use the funds to study the causes, prevention, and treatment of cancer.
Kevin Mills, Ph.D., a scientist at The Jackson Laboratory, recently said, “The
Maine Cancer Foundation makes a very big difference to the quality and the type
and the amount of cancer research that happens in the state.”
In recent years, Maine Cancer Foundation seed grants have enabled scientists,
including Dr. Mills, to compete and succeed on the national stage. He received an
initial grant in 2008 to identify and investigate the cellular processes that normally
protect against cancer-related chromosome rearrangements. His results were so
promising that Dr. Mills received a four-year, $800,000 grant from the National
Cancer Institute to continue his study.
Each year, Maine Cancer Foundation invests in the most promising ideas from
Maine scientists. Each one is a step on the road that may lead to the cure we
all seek.
Like many others in Maine, Nathan and Helen Brackett’s family
has been impacted by cancer. “We appreciate Maine Cancer
Foundation’s leadership in the funding of Maine based research
initiatives seeking to find a new understanding about cancer,” said
Helen. It was this focus that led the Bracketts to name Maine Cancer
Foundation as the recipient of a charitable annuity in their will.

Cancer Research Profile:

Breast cancer is the second leading cause of death in women with nearly
200,000 diagnoses each year in the U.S. Bone is the most common site for
breast cancer metastases, resulting in bone loss, fractures, anemia and pain.
Despite marked advances in chemotherapy treatments for early stage breast
cancer, once the tumor has metastasized to the bone, few new therapies are
effective in slowing disease progression and increasing survival. Dr. Vanderah’s
team at the University of New England is investigating the use of novel
compounds that both inhibit the growth of the breast cancer cells and reduce
the cancer induced bone pain and bone loss. Their studies so far suggest that
these new medicines may provide advanced-stage breast cancer patients with an
excellent option in slowing the progression of a debilitating and ultimately
fatal disease.
Maine Cancer Foundation
Education Grants
Each year, Maine Cancer Foundation provides funding to organizations seeking to
educate professionals and the public about the causes and treatments of cancer as
well as the screening and lifestyle changes that can prevent the disease altogether.
In 2010-11, we awarded 7 grants totaling $68,265. Some of the programs that
these funds provided support for include:
•cancer prevention and detection in Franklin County
•increased screening for immigrant women in Cumberland County
•improved patient information services in Waldo County
•information on cancer genetics to Maine health providers
•educational opportunities for radiation technicians
This past spring, we awarded grants to 25 oncology nurses enabling them
to attend the annual Oncology Nurse Society Congress in Boston. The nurses
represented 11 facilities in six Maine counties. They received the most up-to-date
information available and had the opportunity to collaborate with nurses from
around the country. Upon returning, the nurses shared the information with
their coworkers both formally and informally.
Cancer Education Profile:
Cancer Education in the Community, Healthy Community Coalition,
Farmington
Each of the educational programs we fund are critical for preventing cancer or
detecting it early, making treatments more successful. Thank you for enabling
Maine Cancer Foundation to fund more every year.
Farmington’s Healthy Community Coalition saw a need to better educate the
economically disenfranchised, rural residents of Greater Franklin County about
cancer prevention and screening. Maine Cancer Foundation funding gave them
the opportunity to launch a highly coordinated effort that has reached over 3,500
people and saved countless lives.
The Susan Donnell Konkel Student Scholarship Fund Award
The program utilizes several strategies including: a mobile health unit; workplace
presentations; door-to-door visits; and the utilization of Facebook to disseminate
information about prevention and screenings.
Made possible by a bequest received from the estate of long-time
MCF friend and donor, Susan D. Konkel.
This year, the award went to Michael Neilson at the Summer Student Research Program
at Maine Medical Center Research Institute. The focus of his research project has been
assessing the effectiveness of prediction models to help prostate cancer patients make
better decisions regarding their treatment and their quality of life. “The skill of risk communication and fostering patient centered decision-making is universal in the medical
profession, and as such the experiences I am having this summer are invaluable,” said
Mike, a rising second year medical student at Tufts University School of Medicine.
“We’re really trying to reach people in quite a variety of ways in the community
that might not be seeking healthcare in a traditional way through their doctor’s
offices,” says Jennifer McCormack, RN, Program Coordinator. “It’s rewarding to
have people either send us letters or tell us their stories of how they wouldn’t
have done a screening if it weren’t for their interactions with us.”
Utilizing a variety of strategies, Healthy Community Coalition is persuading residents
of Franklin County that knowing about cancer is the first step to preventing cancer.

Maine Buddy Program,
Cancer Community Center
Fourteen organizations across the state received $94,724 in grant awards during
the past year. Examples include:
•wellness and nutritional support in Androscoggin, Cumberland and
York Counties
Maine Buddy Program was established in 2001
to connect recently diagnosed cancer patients
with buddies who have travelled the same path.
Maine Cancer Foundation provides critical funds
that enable the program to thrive, matching
about 100 patients every year.
•transportation services in Oxford County and the Lakes Region
•new approaches for prostate cancer patients managing their
emotional journey
•support programs for children dealing with cancer in the family
•cancer survivorship programming
•cancer support groups across the state
These programs serve families in Maine who have been touched by cancer and
have needs beyond the medical treatment they are undergoing.

Tender Living Care program,” said Susan Giambalvo, Program Director for
The Center for Grieving Children. “The peer support program for families facing
serious illness serves more children and families every day. The generous support
of the Foundation ensures that the Center remains a place where the entire family
can get support, for as long as needed and at no cost.”
“I lost my Dad to cancer and then a year later discovered that I also had
cancer. I was very grateful and amazed that people I will never meet
raised money and did the research that enabled me to survive and live a
normal life, something that might not have been possible 10 years earlier.
Being a school teacher, I quickly came to the realization that I had a great
opportunity to not only involve an entire generation of future cancer
fighters, but hopefully get an entire community involved in a fight that we
must, and will, win. Each March when I do Mary’s Walk, I feel a strong
connection to my Dad and it keeps me motivated to find a cure for cancer
that I know will come.”

“Maine Buddy Program gives people a
tremendous amount of hope,” says Michele
Johns, Executive Director of Cancer Community
Center which directs the program. “Your friends
and your family can give you support and love,
but only somebody who has actually walked
in your shoes can give you that kind of hope
and courage.”
Many volunteers were former Buddies
themselves and find that giving back is an
important step in their healing. Michele says
one measure of the program’s success is just
how many of those Buddies return to help other
patients. Another is a milestone reached this
past summer - the 1,000th request for
a Buddy match.

In the 35 years that Maine Cancer Foundation has been funding the fight against
cancer, there have been both successes and challenges. We have made inroads
through research and education, and the death rate from cancer in Maine is on
the decline. However, Maine continues to have the highest annual death rate of all
the New England states, ranked 13th highest in the U.S. which tells us that there
is still work to do.
Maine Cancer Foundation is committed to improving the health and well-being of
Maine people – people like you, your family, your neighbors, and friends. As you
saw on the previous pages, we have supported programs across the state that
are making an important difference each and every day.
We are able to make a significant impact because of your vital support.

On Sunday, March 13, nearly 4,000 walkers
and runners converged on Saco to celebrate
the 13th annual Mary’s Walk and Kerrymen Pub
5K. These hardy souls from southern Maine,
New Hampshire and Massachusetts came to
honor the memory of lives lost to cancer and to
encourage and support those who are currently
coping with the disease.
Mary’s Walk was founded in 1999 as a unique
way to recognize Mary Kerry Libby’s spirit and the
joie de vivre she warmly shared with friends, family
and the community of Saco. What first began as
a 427 person stroll through town has evolved into
a major community happening that has attracted
an estimated 35,000 or more participants during
its 13 year span. In 2011, Mary’s Walk raised
$180,000 for the Maine Cancer Foundation,
bringing the total amount of funds raised since its
inception to over $1.7 million.
Thanks go to the many dedicated supporters who host their own fundraising
events to benefit MCF. Each one is committed to ensuring that we are able to
continue supporting cancer research, education and patient support in Maine.

The 4th Annual Tri for a Cure was held under sunny skies on
July 31, 2011 and raised a record $1.1 million for Maine
Cancer Foundation. This year, the all women’s triathlon sold
out in about 4 minutes, highlighting the popularity of the three
sport event. Each participant was required to raise $350, but
many raised much more.
The Twilight 5K offers women the opportunity to get a taste
for the race, running the same beautiful waterfront course at Southern Maine
Community College. While there was no minimum donation to participate in this
race, participants still raised nearly $30,000 to fight all cancers in Maine.
Tri for a Cure has quickly become a premier event in Maine and an opportunity for
women to challenge themselves physically while raising funds that will help their
family, friends and neighbors who are battling cancer.

The 10th annual Cure Breast Cancer for ME
Luncheon on October 5, 2011 was a tremendous
success! Nearly 600 people packed the ballroom at the Holiday Inn by the Bay
in Portland to support survivors, remember those we have lost, and celebrate the
progress we have made in fighting breast cancer. Event founder, Meredith Strang
Burgess and Susan Bowden, event chair for the past two years, put on a wonderful
program which included a look back at past luncheons along with a compelling video
of physicians and scientists talking about how far we have come in just 10 years.
The awards ceremony honored the following individuals:

The highlight of the Luncheon for many was the final cheer, led by dancers
from Dance Studio of Maine celebrating the end to another year of hope and
inspiration. This year’s event raised over $70,000 for the Women’s Cancer Fund
which ensures that funds will always be available for cancers affecting women.

MCF Women’s Cancer Fund
The Women’s Cancer Fund was established in 2002 to ensure that resources
would always be available for cancers that affect women. All funds raised from
the Cure Breast Cancer for ME Luncheon and Pink Tulip Project support the fund
which has provided over $1,000,000 in funding to date.
Pink Tulip Project has been blooming
in Maine gardens for six years and
continues to spread across the state.
This year, we added the opportunity to
purchase bulbs to the traditional public
and community fundraising gardens, and
over 30,000 pink tulips and daffodils
were planted in Maine and beyond. From
the planting parties with school children
to the bloom parties in the cool spring
air, we celebrated with gardens of hope
that fewer women will be diagnosed
with cancer.
It is planting time again for the 2012
season. As the snow begins to fall,
we will anticipate the flowers that will
bloom in the spring symbolizing hope for
those suffering from cancer and raising
awareness in communities everywhere.
