Choices
O
ne of our favorite fictional characters once
said that it is not our abilities that show us
who we truly are, but rather our choices.
This annual report is a testament to choices; first and
foremost the choices made by our clients — whose
problems can seem so overwhelming and whose
lives can seem so broken — to come to The Women’s
Center and begin the difficult journey toward change.
With great courage, they have chosen to face a crisis
or to confront the problems created by rape, child
sexual abuse, poverty, mental illness, or emotional
paralysis in the face of overwhelming responsibilities
and complex difficulties.
These clients are women, men and children from
all walks of life and from every neighborhood in our
community. The Women’s Center’s job has always
been to inspire and support their work here, and
to help them see, believe in and achieve happy,
healthy, productive futures. In doing so, we never
cease to be moved by what people can accomplish
if someone will only invest in their capacity to heal
and grow. And so at The Women’s Center, year
after year, an exceptionally talented and tenured
staff, a committed and involved Board, almost 500
volunteers, and a generous community of donors
choose to give their time, talent and treasure to
support the work of changing lives.
As you review this annual report, we hope you will
find our work worthy of your choosing.

Crisis into Confidence
oldest child was in the drug scene – stealing,

her daughter with me for weeks
at a time, associating with scary people. I was
trying everything I knew to do in order to help
her while working full time and I was completely
overwhelmed. Then I lost my only living parent
and my anxiety escalated from there. I was so sad,
and at the same time constantly worrying that my
three-year-old granddaughter wasn’t safe. I was
leery about coming to The Women’s Center, but I
knew I needed help and couldn’t go on by myself.
The Women’s Center helped me more than I could
have imagined. My counselor helped me get over
the guilt I had as a parent and understand that I
have the power to take care of my situation. The
Women’s Center gave me confidence, knowledge
to deal with the stressors in my life, and a belief in
myself again. My daughter is now drug free and
getting back on her feet. The Women’s Center
helped me become a better parent and in turn I
have healthier children. There is no telling where
we would be without The Women’s Center and I’m
very glad we never have to find out.”

Children and Adults Served:
1,807
1,561 people called the Helpline for crisis counseling and
problem solving assistance.
163 people received therapy.
134 homeless children and their 65 parents living in shelters
received support services.
105 people received assistance through the Legal Clinic.

Struggle into Success
the caregiver for my father for 7 years before
“I was
he passed away in January of 2014. For almost a
year, I had not worked and I didn’t know what I was
going to do. I tried to get back into the workforce
but found myself working temporary jobs to make
ends meet. I heard about The Women’s Center and
enrolled in the Jobs Now! program. With the eyeopening information provided, I started considering
a career change. I have my Master’s Degree in
Business Administration but I was really struggling for
anyone to even look at my resume.
Jobs Now! helped me hone in on my skills, do
research to learn about what I really could do with
my life and tweak my resume to get the interviews.
Within 5 months, I went from making less than $10
an hour working three temporary jobs at a time, to
stable full-time employment, making over $20 an
hour. Doubling my salary has allowed me to start
playing catch up, stop worrying about how I am going
to pay my bills, and has given me the confidence to
move forward. When I came to The Women’s Center,
I was in tears because they were about to turn off my
electricity. Now, I am encouraged to do what I need
to do to make sure I am successful and can support
myself. It was through the grace of God and The
Women’s Center that I made it. I am very grateful.”

Average wage at placement was $13.91 per hour.

70% of Jobs Now! clients became employed.
93% of clients who found jobs were still employed
after one year.
238 people completed training and learned skills
to advance on the job.

Victim Services
Trauma into Triumph
committed suicide when I was 6 years
“Myold.mother
My father remarried when I was 7, and my
sister and I were physically and sexually abused by my
new stepfamily. At age 14, I ended up in foster care.
By age 16, I had my first daughter and was married by
age 17. Shortly after we were married, my husband was
convicted of sexual assault and abuse of three family
members, the youngest being 3 years old. He went to
prison and my family tried to move forward. We saw
professional counselors and moved to another state. I
got a bachelor’s degree then a master’s degree in legal
studies and started making a life for my family.
Fast forward 20 years to 2013, and my ex-husband was
challenging his sentence. I flew down to testify, and told
the story about what he had done to my family and the
magnitude of the repercussions. Eight months later, he was
released from prison. I started having flashbacks; flashbacks
of my childhood, remembrances of what had been done to
my own children. An influx of negative feelings hit me, and
I was wandering around helpless. Every day I wondered if
I would end up doing what my mother did and committing
suicide. Then I heard about The Women’s Center, and I
realize now, it was the answer to my prayers. My counselor
helped me put my life into a new perspective, regain control,
and freed me from the past. I now don’t have to wonder if I
will ever follow in my mother’s footsteps, and for that, I give
all the praise to The Women’s Center.”

Children and Adults Served:
2,883
1,490 people called the Rape Crisis and Victim Services Hotline.
109 children and 394 adults and their 377 significant others were counseled
at local hospital rape exam sites.
338 abused and victimized children and their significant others received therapy.
349 adult victims of sexual assault and other violent crime and their significant
others received therapy.
32 victims received legal representation by a new in-house attorney.
67 children and adults were accompanied through the criminal justice process.

Prevention & Education
Pain into Possibilities
A
fter the completion of 14 new
movies in 2014, the demand for
Play it Safe!® has continued to increase
in Tarrant County. Over 16,000 more
children received Play it Safe!® risk
reduction programs from January
through September 2015 than in the
same period of 2014. The need for
addressing the difficult topic of sexual
abuse and sexual assault continues to
be critical in schools.
As a result of the continued growth of
Play it Safe!® the number of outcries
has also climbed. From January through
September of 2015, 167 children
disclosed their current or past abuse to
a Women’s Center trainer, with only 64
during the same period in 2014 — a 160%
increase! The success of the program’s
ability to teach children how to recognize
abusive behavior and encourage them
to report abuse has resulted in five local
school districts mandating Play it Safe!®.
When every student receives the same
message across the district, this creates
a culture in which abuse is recognized
and not tolerated. By educating
students, districts are able to empower
communities to stop the silence that
perpetuates violence against children.

Children and Adults Served:
74,143
67,961 children and adolescents participated in child abuse and sexual
assault prevention programs.
As a result, 167 children disclosed their current or past abuse to a
Women’s Center trainer (does not include children who may have disclosed
to another trusted adult).
4,755 adults received sexual assault prevention training.
1,427 professionals were trained in issues regarding sexual assault and
child abuse.
