Hello friends!
It’s hard to believe that we’re already a
decade into the new century! Over the
past ten years, Big Brothers Big Sisters has
experienced extraordinary growth in terms of
service capacity and in the relationships we
share with the communities we serve. There
have been challenges and growing pains, but
our dedication to the mission has remained
steadfast. Big Brothers Big Sisters realizes that during these times of
economic hardship and social insecurity, our children need more positive
support than ever before. We can’t control the stock market and we
may never see world peace in our lives, but we can pursue a better
future for our children.
It is determination, resiliency, and positive attitudes that make
Big Brothers Big Sisters not just an agency, but a movement.
I am happy to report that our 2010 efforts to regroup from two years of
economic downturn have helped Big Brothers Big Sisters maintain high
levels of quality service and develop important agency infrastructure
needed for success in the coming years. We resolved to “do more with
less” in 2010—despite a slump in donations, we were able to match 1,673
children with a Big Brother or a Big Sister. In addition to strong match
numbers, I’d like to highlight the phenomenal success of our Mentoring
Children of Prisoners program. This specialized initiative provides extra
training and support for matches in which a child has a parent currently
incarcerated in a corrections facility. Nearly a quarter of the “Littles” we
served in 2010 qualified for this program and these matches lasted, on
average, 2 to 3 months longer than our traditional match relationships.
Youth outcomes were also significantly higher than in 2009 as our
“Littles” demonstrated better relationships and visions for the future.
Our mentors are truly making a difference in the lives of children who
simply need a friend and role model. On behalf of the Big Brothers
Big Sisters family, I’d like to thank all who supported our work in 2010.
This year proved to be an important transition period as our Board of
Directors and management staff worked together to develop agency
infrastructure in preparation for the coming years. Changes in Big
Brothers Big Sisters staff include new faces for our outlying counties and
consolidated positions for greater efficiency. Our central office building
on Fairfield Avenue also underwent a major facelift: our HQ now sports
a shiny new roof thanks to funding from the McMillian Foundation and
NIPSCO. I’d also like to take this opportunity to congratulate our Board
President, Dr. Andy O’Shaughnessy, who received this year’s national
Board Member of the Year award. We are proud of the work we’ve
accomplished in 2010 and we look forward to serving even more
children in 2011.
Big Brothers Big Sisters is more than just an agency. Thanks to support
from you, our donors and volunteers, we’ve started a movement towards
a vision in which every child has access to positive, caring role models.
As we begin another year, I want to encourage you to “Start Something”
for children in your community. You have the power to make a real
difference and I invite you to join us as we celebrate another year of
youth mentoring!

When I first got involved with Big Brothers
Big Sisters in college, I could have never
imagined how much this organization
and its mission would come to mean to
me. Looking back, I was just like so many
other new volunteers—excited to do good
in meaningful way, but also a little naïve
and a lot nervous. While my nerves settled
quickly, I’ve never lost the exhilarating
sense of warm satisfaction that Big Brothers
Big Sisters provides to our communities. Next to my family and my
work, serving this agency as a mentor and as a member of the Board
has been one of the greatest blessings I’ve ever known.
Despite the challenges that accompany any leadership position
(I’d love to meet whoever said non-profit management is easy),
leading the Board of Directors this year has been extremely

rewarding and I am honored to have served with such a
distinguished group. I am humbled by the board’s wise counsel
and the agency’s growing successes speak to the tremendous work
our dedicated staff performs daily. Of course, we could not operate
if it not for the goodwill and pure generosity of our corporate and
community partners. I can never forget how fortunate we are to
serve in communities that are so willing to donate time, money, and
energy to helping children reach their full potential.
I’ve seen firsthand the obvious passion that is common among all of
us—Bigs, Littles, donors, staff, teachers, parents—and I feel strongly
that such a dynamic sense of duty and compassion is unique to Big
Brothers Big Sisters. I foresee great things for this agency: we should
always celebrate the little moments that define us and we must
always pursue opportunity on our horizon.

When Big Brother Mike and Little Brother Jeremy first met
in 2005, they started something that would create a lasting
impact on both of their lives.
My Big Brother Mike challenges me to
do better in school and encourages me
to try new things.
My Big Sister Angelique has been
such an inspiration to me, I couldn’t
imagine my life without her.
Big Sister Angelique & Little
Sister Andrea – matched since 2006
Many Bigs and Littles feel so connected that the terms
“Big Brother” and “Big Sister” take on a different meaning.
Once so shy and lonely that she refused to leave the house,
Andrea credits her Big for helping her realize that her dreams
and goals are always within reach. Big Sister Angelique helped
Andrea develop personality, self-confidence, and a sense of
humor. Little Sister Andrea is now at the top of her high school
class and she speaks to parents in her community about how
she has stayed in school and out of trouble.
Angelique and Andrea have become so close over the years
that they talk to each other every day on the phone, through
text messaging, and their extra-creative Facebook conversations
(ttyl, lol, LYLAS!). They make each other laugh, they challenge
each other to achieve goals, and they’ve become the best of
friends. Angelique and Andrea don’t just tell people they’re
sisters—they believe it!
Thanks to Mike’s constant support and encouragement,
Jeremy has made big strides in the classroom and is more
self confident. Over the past 7 years, Mike has become more
than just a Big Brother to Jeremy - he has become a role
model, a foundation for growth, and – most importantly –
one of his Little Brother’s closest friends.

listen to me.

& Little Brother Nicholas –
matched since 2006
Through our Big Couples program, helping children reach
their potential is an experience for the entire family. Big Couple
Eric and Lauren have been matched with Little Brother Nicholas
for five years. From the very beginning, Eric and Lauren focused
their energies toward helping their Little Brother improve
academically - often spending time reading books at the library.
Eric and Lauren tell us, “Our relationship with Nicholas has grown
immensely over the past five years – Nicholas has become a
part of our family.” In that time, this trio has grown especially
close – Nicholas even makes an appearance on Eric and
Lauren’s Christmas cards!
Apart from the usual pizza dinners and homework help,
Lauren has found that she and Nicholas really connect
in the kitchen when making dinner together.
