Newsletter 8 - Confraria do Vinho do Porto
Nr. 8 – December 2009 – www.confrariavinhodoporto.com
As my third term as Chancellor of the Confraria do Vinho do Porto was coming to a
close, I felt that the time had come for me to entrust my embassy to a new team that
would ensure the continuation of the Confraria’s mission - the defence of the prestige
and expansion of the image of our Wine - and introduce youthful energy in support of
this endeavour.
This is why, it was with joy and confidence in the future, that I welcomed our Treasurer,
George Sandeman’s readiness to head the new Chancellery and the introduction of two
young members, David Fonseca Guimaraens and Jorge Rosas, whose highly successful
professional careers and total dedication to Port Wine are a guarantee for the future
success of our Confraria’s governing body, which shall continue to count with the
experience and dedication of our fellow confrades, António Vasconcelos and Manuel
Magalhães Ferreira.
My entire professional life was and continues to be dedicated to Port Wine and the
Douro, a family tradition that has been handed down for generations. It is for this reason
that I was extremely honoured and pleased to have been chosen to lead such an
esteemed institution as the Confraria. As I look back to what we accomplished during
my tenure as Chancellor, although it saddens me that we were unable to attain all the
objectives we had set for ourselves, I am most appreciative of our having added several
significant accomplishments to the list of those achieved by my illustrious predecessors,
namely:
-
the new model for the Annual Enthronement Ceremony, which now includes a
formal parade along the riverside to the Museu dos Transportes, the venue for
the Gala Dinner and Ball;
-
the changes to the model for the Ceremony of the Declaration of the Confraria
Vintage, which now includes a tasting of all Vintage Ports declared that year;
-
the amendment to our Customs whereby all confrades who propose new
members are required to attend their Enthronement;
-
the admission of numerous individuals of note as honorary confrades. Our
already exceptional Roll of Honorary Chancellors (Heads of State) was enriched
with 11 new members.

In addition to the dedicated and enlightened cooperation of my Chancellery colleagues,
to whom I express my most sincere and heartfelt thanks, I would also like to express my
appreciation to the following persons and entities for their significant contribution to the
success of our mission:
-
The Port and Douro Wines Institute (IVDP), who always understood the
importance of the Confraria as a vital instrument for promoting Port, for its
precious backing of our initiatives.
-
The Port Wine Shippers who have always been on hand in support of the
Confraria and espoused it as an integral part of their being, which it truly is.
-
The Association of Port Wine Companies (AEVP) with whom we have a close,
friendly and fruitful relationship.
-
Isabel Marrana, Director General of the AEVP, for her invaluable, permanent
and eminently competent support of all of the Confraria’s initiatives.
-
The Municipalities of Vila Nova de Gaia and Porto that, whenever an
opportunity arose, always assisted the Confraria in attaining its objectives.
-
To all our Confrades, because without them there would be no purpose in our
being and because it is by walking hand-in-hand that our Confraria will continue
to grow in stature and distinction.
Francisco Javier Olazabal, Chancellor

XXVI RABELO BOAT REGATTA
The 26th Annual CVP Rabelo Boat Regatta was held on 28 June at 5 p.m. Despite the
slightly cloudy afternoon, the race began on time, followed alongside by some 300
guests on the Douro Azul river cruiser.
On both banks of the river, hundreds of happy onlookers cheered the boats on their way,
adding to the excitement of the most traditional event of its kind that the cities of Porto
and Gaia offer their citizens at this time of the year.
The crews of 16 Rabelo boats representing several Port Wine Shippers (Cockburn, Gran
Cruz, Quinta and Vineyard Bottlers, Sogevinus, Sogrape Vinhos, Symington Family
Estates, Rozès) battled a following wind as they raced upriver with their sails unfurled,
each striving to be the first to reach the finishing line.
Rio Torto of Dow’s, Symington Family Estates, and Quinta dos Canais of Cockburn’s
were the joint winners this year. In effect, although Rio Torto crossed the finishing line
in first place, it suffered a 10 seconds penalty for an incorrect procedure at the starting
line, which tied its time with the second to arrive, Quinta dos Canais.
The prizes were awarded by the Chancellor to the warm applause of all present,
followed by the usual group photographs, accompanied by dancing and singing by the
Lavradeiras Santa Maria Adelaide Folk Dancing Group.
Crews and guests then made their way to Sandeman’s Lodges where they enjoyed
dinner.
