[ Message from the CEO ]
Don’t just
get a job,
build a career
C
areer colleges across
Canada offer students
the opportunity to make
an important decision: do you
want a job, or do you want a
career?
Canada’s career colleges offer
accelerated programs and the
kind of hands-on experience
that employers are looking for. This
helps students get better jobs, sooner.
Condensed programs and flexible class
time make it easy to finish your classes
while taking care of other responsibilities.
What’s more, career colleges are able to
adapt quickly to labour market changes,
altering existing programs and creating
new ones to appeal to industries facing
labour shortages. This gives students the
training they need to fill the jobs that are
in demand now.
Since the 1800s, career colleges in
Canada have been providing students
with quality education to succeed in
the job market. The numbers speak for
themselves: every year, across Canada,
more than 150,000 students choose career
colleges.
Canada’s career colleges are also working to help Canadians and the Canadian
economy in other ways, such as through
the work we do at NACC’s Alterna-
tive Career Pathways initiative.
Through this program, NACC
members are helping Canadian
newcomers utilize the workplace skills and experiences
they developed before immigrating to Canada. This helps
them overcome credential-recognition barriers and allows them
to use their skills here in Canada.
For newcomers who have used this
program, the career college courses they
enrolled in were not just a chance to pad
their resumes with Canadian education
credentials – they were an open door to a
better and brighter career.
Canada’s career colleges are teaching
students how to thrive in exciting new
careers. Don’t settle for just another job.

How to get
an education that will
get you
a job
For almost two centuries, career colleges
have been a key aspect of Canada’s
post-secondary educational landscape.
In today’s economy, the training
provided by these institutions remains
as relevant and important as ever.
[ 6 ] www.nacc.ca

Whether you are a recent high
school graduate, a newcomer to
Canada or an adult seeking retraining or skills upgrading, there are
myriad programs in some of the most
high-demand fields available at the
over 500 career colleges across the
country. The benefit of these targeted
programs is that they are specifically
designed to get you into the workplace quickly and to make you effective and productive on the job.
The Canadian Chamber of Commerce recognizes the importance of
job-focused training. It estimates
there will be 550,000 unskilled workers who won’t be able to find work
by 2016 and by 2021 the number
could be well over a million. But for
the skilled sector, it’s a very different
story; estimates suggest there will be
1.5 million skilled job vacancies in
2016, and 2.6 million by 2021.
The Government of Canada maintains a commitment to job creation,
economic growth and long-term
prosperity as three of its highest priorities. “By bringing employers to the
table, career colleges across Canada
are helping Canadians get the skills
in demand in today’s economy,”
said The Honourable Jason Ken-
ney, then-Minister of Employment
and Social Development. “Through
measures like the Canada Apprentice Loan, Canada Job Grant and
apprenticeship grants, the Government of Canada is helping Canadians
get well-paying jobs and helping
employers get the skilled workforce
they need.”
The value of career-focused education is further highlighted by recent
studies which identify the projected
highest-demand jobs. For example, a
Globe and Mail article presents data
quantifying the anticipated demands
for various trades in the coming
years in British Columbia, which is
comparable to the picture all across
Canada. Training for nine of the top
ten jobs is available through Canada’s
extensive network of accredited
career colleges. The Globe’s findings are easily mapped to the career
colleges in Canada offering relevant
programs.
It’s evident that an investment in
accredited trade training is extremely
likely to be time and money well
spent. Career colleges are provincially
approved and regulated, so you can
have confidence that both program

standards and quality are scrutinized and
continually enhanced.
There is compelling data that further
supports the value of a career college
education. A survey undertaken by R.A.
Malatest & Associates Ltd. discovered
that 79 per cent of graduates enjoy higher
income than they were earning prior to
their career college training. In addition,
89 per cent of graduates are participating in the workforce and of those, 80 per
cent are working in sectors related to their
training.
“This is clear proof that career college
graduates are workplace-ready,” notes
Serge Buy, CEO of the National Association of Career Colleges (NACC).
Our member colleges understand how
important it is for the employers of some
of today’s fastest-growing sectors to secure
quality employees who are competitive,
trainable and retainable. Career colleges
offer hands-on training programs that
definitely prepare our students to succeed
in today’s competitive world.”
As the focus on hiring properly trained
employees intensifies in many sectors,
Canadian career colleges offer a number
of benefits. In addition to flexible training options to fit students’ schedules, they
present a practical cost-effective alternative approach to post-secondary education
and skills training. As well, like most other
post-secondary educational institutions, financial aid may be available for some students and programs. Students interested
in a career in the trades might also want
to explore the possibility of participating
in the Red Seal program. Red Seal is a set
of interprovincial standards established to
provide greater mobility for skilled workers across Canada. Over fifty trades are
included in the program, and many of the
schools under the NACC umbrella offer
Red Seal training.
Due to the specialized, focused nature
of career colleges, they are able to adapt
quickly and respond to changing job markets. This ensures that students are able
to gain the education and practical work
experience they need, leading to meaningful employment opportunities in Canada
or abroad.

Brenda Miklos, an education
supervisor in the PSW
program at Medix College of
Healthcare

Providing essential
care in changing times
Canada’s evolving demographics and healthcare
practices are leading to a steady increase in the
demand for personal support workers (PSWs).
This rewarding career path offers an opportunity to provide a wide range of care services
for post-surgical or post-illness patients as well
as for the elderly. At a career college, students
embark on a comprehensive 26-week program
giving them concrete skills to succeed in this
challenging yet fulfilling field.
Currently offered in Ontario, Nova Scotia
and New Brunswick, the PSW curriculum,
developed by the National Association of
Career Colleges (NACC), covers a wide range
of topics. Students gain practical knowledge of
physical and mental health, ethics, household
management, care planning, mobility issues,
and more. This includes knowledge about
various debilitating or chronic medical conditions, how to care for everyone from infants to
the elderly, assisting with medication, palliative care support and liaising with medical
professionals. Students benefit tremendously
from supervised clinical placements and at the
completion of the program, they write a comprehensive final exam set by NACC.
The job prospects in this field are varied
and abundant, with workers making valued
contributions in both community and institutional settings, including hospitals, educational
facilities, day programs, long-term care (LTC)
facilities and more.
“People suited to the role of the Personal
Support Worker are people with compassion,
empathy and strong work ethic,” explains
Brenda Miklos, and education supervisor
in the PSW program at Medix College of
Healthcare. “We look for students who love
working with people and respect the dignity
and self-worth of others. Our most successful
students are also dedicated and committed to
professional and personal growth.”
Miklos notes that there are many opportunities for PSWs to have fulfilling careers in
a wide range of environments. “The work is
there if you want it and will continue for many
years to come,” she adds. Salaries vary from
community to community with averages from
$12.00 per hour in a community setting to
approximately $25.00 per hour in hospital or
LTC Facilities.
As a PSW, you can set your own path depending on the type and pace of work that you
are interested in. LTC and hospital settings
provide a faster paced environment with an
interdisciplinary team, while community home
care is more independent, working one-onone with clients. Whichever route you go, the
Personal Support Worker program is reflective
of the new standards of care and will be both
rewarding and challenging, providing a firm
foundation of knowledge and skills to lead you
into a new and satisfying career. [ Career Spotlight ]
Residential

our Residential
Framing Technician
Program will benefit in
two ways. In developing
the program, we had
subject matter experts
from CHBA-NL review
and advise us on the
curriculum to ensure it
meets the need of the
local home builders,”
Des Whelan,
President of Keyin College
Building your future
in home construction
If you’re seeking a bright future with
abundant job prospects, look no further than the construction sector. The
Government of Canada has stated that
it is anticipated that there will be as
many as 300,000 new workers needed
in the construction trades over the next
ten years.
Career colleges offer many different kinds of skilled trades programs;
among the most popular today is Residential Framing Technician. Developed in response to demand from the
residential home building and renovating industry, the program offers practical training that helps workers provide
essential services on any homebuilding
job site.
The residential framing technician
program is comprehensive, commencing with an orientation to the residential construction industry, including
vital skills such as workplace safety.
Students then get thorough exposure
to construction tools and equipment,
drawings specifications and layout and
other important theoretical elements.
The third component is hands-on
experience in multiple aspects of construction technique, including renovation skills. A typical residential framing technician program comprises 600
hours of technical training followed by
500 hours of work-based training.
While the anticipated salary range
varies depending on experience that
the graduates might have had prior
to the program of study, new entrants
could expect to earn $25 to $30 per
hour. Ideally an entrant to this program should like to work with their
hands, be interested in working in a
team environment and be the kind of
person who takes pride in their work. Close contact with homebuilders’
associations serve to keep residential
framing technician programs relevant
to the demands of the workplace. For
example, Keyin College in St. John’s
and the Canadian Home Builders’ Association-Newfoundland and
Labrador (CHBA-NL) work together
to increase professionalism and provide
quality training in the residential home
building sector.
“Graduates of our Residential Framing Technician Program will benefit in
two ways. In developing the program,
we had subject matter experts from
CHBA-NL review and advise us on
the curriculum to ensure it meets
the need of the local home builders,”
says Des Whelan, President of Keyin
College. “As students graduate they
will be able to take advantage of direct
relationships with the home building
community to get access to both work
term assignments and employment in
the sector.”

Information Technology
skills in high demand
across all industries
Job prospects for skilled Information Technology (IT) professionals are strong in
virtually all industries today. Companies
both large and small seek highly trained
professionals to handle a wide range of duties including computer support, database
management, network administration and
more. To meet this demand, many Canadian
career colleges now offer targeted, concentrated programs in Information Technology
and Network Administration with a focus on
developing highly specialized technical skill
sets to ensure success in the workplace.
Most programs are about one year in duration, offering an ideal blend of theoretical and
practical learning. The curriculum includes
lectures and workshops led by industry experts with real-world experience.
Those well suited to this program include
students with an aptitude for problem solving. Being technologically savvy and having
excellent research skills is also important.
Good communication skills are essential, not
only for interacting with the users requiring assistance but also to forge an effective,
productive working relationship with team
members. Organizational and time management skills are a must as well, given that
in today’s fast-paced business world, some
problems cannot wait to be solved.
To ensure the continued relevancy of their
IT programs, career colleges typically seek
out and obtain affiliations with recognized,
reputable industry leaders, to ensure their
offerings will be recognized by employers as
being of the highest calibre. Once students
have obtained their IT or Network Administration diploma, they are well positioned
to pursue vital industry certification requirements which enable further advancement in
their chosen field.
As Jessica Hurford, Brighton College’s
marketing coordinator, explains, “Brighton
is a Microsoft IT Academy (ITA) Member.
The goal of this program is to train students
to an exceptionally high standard in network
planning, implementation, administration
and support. Students also achieve requisite
skills in computer maintenance and management. Our program is based on industry
certification requirements as determined by
Microsoft, CompTIA, and Cisco and the
course of study maps directly to numerous
certification pathways for recognized designations.”
“The prospects are bright for graduates of
the IT/Network Administration program,”
adds Jessica. “The median wage for this
career is $27 per hour, with an average annual
salary in the $53,000 to $66,000 range. In
addition, 85 per cent of Brighton’s graduates
have found jobs recently upon completion of
this program.”

Career
Asking key questions
an important part
of the selection process
[ 18 ] www.nacc.ca
Choosing a career path can be confusing, intimidating and even overwhelming, but
Canada’s many career colleges have a great deal of experience helping students
of all ages make the right choices for their future. Whether you’re looking at career
college as an option straight out of high school or considering it to retrain or
upgrade your skills, there are a number of factors you’ll want to consider as you do
your research. While it may sound like a lot to think about, the more you learn, the
better prepared you’ll be to choose the right program at the right school for you.
Examine your talents and interests
At the outset, it’s essential to take a serious look at your own talents and interests.
If you like working with your hands, perhaps the skilled trades are a good option.
If you’re a people person, there are many
possibilities, ranging from business to
esthetics to law and much more. Is math
your thing? If so, accounting or computing might be right up your alley. If you’re
squeamish, health care related fields might
not be the best choice, but culinary arts
might be a fit. Think about what qualities
you have that you would like to apply to
your career. What have you enjoyed about
previous jobs or volunteering experiences?
When you have brainstormed to develop a
short list of programs that you feel might
be a good fit, it’s a good idea to make an
appointment to speak to one or more college officials to get the answers and details
you need to make an informed decision.
Instructors and administrators at career
colleges share a common goal: they want
to see every student achieve career success.
Make room for growth
Speaking of career success, remember
that you should be thinking both short
and long term. Many fields have room for
growth, so it’s important to consider both
entry level and more advanced positions.
Does a higher level position in management, for example, appeal to you? Be
mindful that your interests and strengths
could change as you accumulate knowledge and experience, so it’s best to keep all
your options open at the outset. Whatever
your aspirations, it’s important to find out
if you’ll be able to gain skills at the career
college to not only help you get a job
quickly upon graduation, but also have the
necessary skills to advance in that field.
Campus visits worthwhile
If feasible, it’s worthwhile to visit the colleges on your short list to see if you get a
good feeling from visiting the campus. If
possible, arrange ahead of time to sit in on
a class or two in the program(s) you are
interested in; this will help you get a better
sense of what to expect. Is it a place where
you would feel at ease attending classes?
Are you comfortable with the class size?
If you have an opportunity to look at the
text books or other course materials, are
they written in a way that you can follow
with ease? It can also be very worthwhile
to ask to speak with students currently
attending the college in a program of
interest to you, to find out about their
experience and to ask them what they like
and don’t like about the college, bearing in
mind, of course, that every person’s experience will be different.
Applying and interviews
When you’ve narrowed down the possibilities, you need to look at the application
process for the colleges you’re interested
in. What are the deadlines? Do you need
to provide transcripts from previous education? Is a high school diploma or GED
required? What about a letter of recommendation? Is there an admissions test?
Most career colleges require applicants
to participate in at least one interview so

ach year, the National
Association of Career Colleges
(NACC) celebrates along with the
thousands of graduates who are completing their programs and entering the workforce. It’s an exciting time for all involved,
including the students, their families and
the educators who have helped them gain
vital skills, experience and confidence.
NACC annually solicits nominations for
both the Graduate of the Year as well as
the Educator of the Year. Both awards pay
tribute to the hard work and dedication
that make a career college education so
rewarding and fruitful.
This year, Andres Perera was named
Graduate of the Year. His story is a
familiar one in the world of career college
students: he arrived in Canada from Cuba
in 1993, grateful for the opportunity of
a better life for himself and his family.
While they struggled initially to make
ends meet, in 2012 Perera decided it was
finally time to pursue his goal of working
in Information Technology. His research
led him to triOS College in Mississauga,
Ontario, where his perseverance and commitment to his studies led him to graduate
with honours – his average was above 90
percent – and with a perfect attendance
record.
“Andres was a leader in his class,” says
campus director Uzma Bhatti. “The other
students looked up to him as a mentor
and a role model. He took charge in group
settings. He enjoyed learning and assisting
his classmates who were struggling.”
Bhatti adds that Perera looked for new
ways to think outside the box in the classroom, ensuring that he absorbed all the
knowledge being conveyed. Outside the
classroom, he completed an internship and

“This pioneering program encourages
students to become aware of the impact of
their professional practice on the environment,” says Christian Pagé, the director
of students at Herzing. “Students

Who
A new pathway
for some
A valued option
for retraining
While many of today’s
practical-minded students
are seeking a job-focused
post-secondary education,
the age profile of career
college students is actually
much more varied than
you might have thought.
Those seeking to upgrade
their skills to open new
career pathways are well
represented, as are immigrants to Canada wishing
to build upon international
accreditation. All students
[ 26 ] www.nacc.ca
share in the many benefits
that come from choosing a
career college for retraining.
All member institutions of the National
Association of Career Colleges (NACC) offer new
Canadians the same wide
range of options including
various trades, information technology, health
care, business, culinary arts,
technical or scientific work,
and many more.
Not only are most
programs condensed

and therefore faster to
complete, the calibre of
the programs offered is
extremely high, with many
accredited by third parties.
On top of this, career colleges recognize that fulltime, daytime studies may
not be possible for working
adults, so many offer flexible schedules to accommodate jobs and other
commitments. In addition,
colleges are typically conveniently located with easy
access via public transit.
NACC is further adding
to the diversity of career
college student communities through the Alternative Career Pathway (ACP)
initiative. Funded by the

We have the whole gamut here.
High school students are looking
at all their options, including career
colleges, which is great.”
Debbie Scott,
Career Services Advisorr
with Algonquin Careers Academy
federal government’s Foreign Credential Recognition Program, ACP offers
a range of supports to new
Canadians schooled abroad
and having difficulty finding employment in their
areas of expertise.
With support from
NACC’s national office in
Ottawa, regional co-ordinators can refer prospective
students to career college
programs and provide
information on alternative career options that
will allow them to make
use of their training in the
workforce.
Osvaldo Bolanos Medina
is a recent career college
success story. The GTA
resident arrived in Canada
Osvaldo Bolanos Medina
from Cuba with a master’s
degree in Kinesiology. After several years of factory
work, Medina determined
that he would need further
schooling in order to find
work equivalent to what
he’d been doing in Cuba.
Debbie Scott
At Bryan College in North
York, Medina found a
massage therapy program
that was a good match
with his previous experience. He completed the
program in 18 months,
at about half the cost of
university tuition.
Upon graduation,
Medina was able to secure
employment as a massage therapist. In addition,
he was very proud to be
selected to work with athletes at the 2015 Pan Am
Games in Toronto.
A great option
for high school
graduates
While career colleges are
largely viewed as places for
those seeking a change in
career or to upgrade their
skills, in fact, they are gaining in popularity among
younger students with a
clear vision for their future.
Those seeking to enter
the workforce quickly and
with in-demand skills are
choosing career college
with increasing frequency.
Debbie Scott, a career
services advisor with Algonquin Careers Academy
in Ottawa, confirms that
she is seeing an increase in
students enrolling straight
out of high school. “We
have the whole gamut here.
High school students are
looking at all their options,
including career colleges,
which is great,” she says.
Scott adds that the advantages to a career college
education are the same
whatever a student’s age.
The path to graduation
from a career college is led
by instructors who bring
real-world work experience to the classroom.
Students graduate with
highly marketable skills
and receive job placement
and career management
support. Nearly 90 per cent
of graduates are active in
the workforce and 80 per
cent are working in sectors
directly related to their
training.
The cost of post-secondary education is a challenge for many and career
colleges offer the opportunity to graduate in a year
or less, as opposed to the
two- to four-year span of a
college diploma or university degree. And, with
more than 1,000 career
colleges to choose from
across Canada, there’s very
likely one near enough to
your home town that you’ll
save significantly on living
expenses.

Eligibility
Expanded
for Canada Student Grants
A
long with many of the
tens of thousands of
students that attend
career colleges each year,
National Association of Career
Colleges (NACC) was very
pleased with a recent announcement by the Government of Canada to expand
eligibility for the grant portion
of the Canada Student Loans
Program. The funding announcement clearly recognizes that facilitating access
to education and training are
key factors in building a strong
economy and workforce.
Making post-secondary education – especially career college programs – more accessible will help those entering the
workforce or seeking retraining
for a new career path. Under
the new system which will be
implemented in time for the
2016 – 2017 fiscal school year,
Canada Student Grants will
be made available to qualifying
low- and middle-income students enrolled in educational
programs with a minimum
duration of 34 weeks. This is a
significant enhancement given
that currently, students must
be enrolled in an educational
program with a minimum duration of 60 weeks to qualify.
It is expected that the expansion will help approximately
42,000 additional students per
year gain eligibility to Canada
Student Grants, including
approximately 22,000 students attending private career
colleges. Full-time students
from low-income families
could qualify to receive a grant
amount of $125 per month
Making post-secondary
education – especially career
college programs – more

the workforce or seeking retraining
for a new career path.”
while those from middleincome families could receive
$50 per month in grant money
which does not need to be
repaid.
Canada Student Grants
are also available for students
with permanent disabilities.
These students are entitled to
a grant of $2,000 per academic
year. Additional funding up to
$8,000 is available for those
who require special services or
equipment.
Canada Student Grants are
available to students from
most provinces and territories
with the exception of Québec,
Nunavut and the Northwest
Territories, whose governments have their own student
financial assistance programs.

Ask about the details
You’ll have other logistical considerations.
What is the duration of the program and
how much does it cost? If you’ll need to
work part-time, ask if classes are offered
during the day, evening or both. What
is included and excluded in the tuition
(books, uniforms, tools, etc.)? What is the
college’s policy on issues like attendance
and repeating a class if you don’t complete it successfully? Is there financial aid
available? What are the placement rates
for graduates, and in what sorts of jobs?
What is the anticipated salary range in the
field(s) you are considering? How much of
the program is theoretical versus handson? Are there work placements and if so,
are they arranged by the college? Is there
external certification or licensing required
to work in your chosen field? Does the
college provide assistance to help graduates find employment? Once again, college
officers should be able to answer most, if
not all, of these questions.
The process
of choosing
a program and a
college may seem
like a lot of work, but
it’s worth taking the
time to do so carefully,
to make the best
possible decisions
and set yourself on an
interesting, rewarding
career path.”
Planning pays off
Remember that career colleges focus on
providing quality training so you will be
a satisfied customer of theirs, as well as
a successful employee in the future. The
process of choosing a program and a college may seem like a lot of work, but it’s
worth taking the time to do so carefully,
to make the best possible decisions and
set yourself on an interesting, rewarding
career path.
