DRAVO CEMETERY RIDE ON THE GAP
OUTDOOR SURVIVAL SKILLS
Ride from little Boston to West Newton and
back as we travel 30 miles along the Great
Allegheny Passage. We’ll stop at Dead Man’s
Hollow, the site of a thriving industrial area
100 years ago that contains only a few
remaining signs of its past industry, and the
isolated Old Dravo Cemetery with gravestones
that date back to 1812. In West Newton, we’ll
enjoy lunch at one of the local eateries.
(Lunch is not included in the outing fee.) Time
will be allotted to wander the town before
pedaling back. Minimum age 12. Bike rentals
are not available for this outing.
Spend a day in the woods of Riverview Park as
we learn basic outdoor skills. We’ve set up
different stations throughout the park to learn
different outdoor skills, like campfire building,
orienteering, and setting up camp. Come away
from the program with a better understanding
of the outdoors and some sweet skills that
you can teach your friends. This activity is
recommended for youth ages 8-18. At least
one parent or guardian is required to register
and attend the workshop with the child(ren)
they are registering.

WILDERNESS FIRST AID
RELAXED
This 16-hour course in Wilderness First Aid is
taught by the Wilderness Medicine Institute of
NOLS. The interactive course is designed to
provide outdoor enthusiasts, guides and
rangers with an introduction to First Aid and
patient care in remote settings. Emphasis is
placed on principles of treatment and
decision-making, not the memorization of
lists. All levels of training and experience are
welcome. Camping is free. Dorm room
lodging is available for $20 per evening.
Everyone has access to bathrooms, showers
and a full-service kitchen. Meals are not
provided. Minimum age 16.
OUTDOOR LEADERSHIP TRAINING: ONE DAY
This day-long, classroom-based training is
designed to improve your leadership skills.
The eight-hour course is a fast-paced mix of
skill training, awareness development and
fun. The curriculum is based on our popular
in-depth weekend training but scaled down to
cover just the basics. No leadership experience
is necessary. In fact, that’s what this course is
about – learning to be an excellent leader.
Topics include assessing the group, setting
expectations, and managing risk.

TRIP LEADER SPOTLIGHT ON ERIN McCORMICK
When did you start volunteering with
Venture Outdoors?
I started volunteering with Venture
Outdoors the summer of 2012. I had just
moved to Pittsburgh in January of that year
and got clued into all of the awesome
hiking and kayaking opportunities Venture
Outdoors offered. Going to multiple events
as a participant then led to the fun of
becoming a Trip Leader.
What is your favorite activity to lead? I can’t decide between Fireworks Paddles
and Beginner Paddles. Both of them give
me the opportunity to get people outside
and let them experience one of my favorite
parts of paddling: taking a moment to just
sit motionless on the water, breathe, look
around, and feel connected and at peace
with the world around me (this happens
whenever I get into a kayak). Fireworks
Paddles top that experience off with
dramatic explosions and vibrant colors,
and Beginner Paddles mix that moment
with the excitement of helping people
learn (or improve on) a physical skill that
will enable them to explore the world in
a new way.
Describe a happy / funny story from a
Venture Outdoors outing.
One of my favorite trips was a familyfocused tour of the Allegheny Commons.
The kids on the trip were all (surprisingly)
focused on the material and the group
had a great time. I had a great time
watching them gather around to stare at
the trees, listen for strange bird sounds
from the aviary, and ask questions about
the history of the area.
Where is your favorite place to be outside
in Pittsburgh?
Frick Park remains one of my favorite
locations to explore. It still boggles my
mind that such a large green space is
surrounded by city neighborhoods and
very accessible, but doesn’t feel urban
at all.
