Annual Gala
Raises Over
$3.1 Million!
On October 29th the Angel Ball raised
over $3.1 million for cancer research.
Held annually in the heart of the
Financial District at Cipriani Wall Street
and sponsored by celebrity jeweler
Lorraine Schwartz, the gala featured
“Entertainment Tonight’s” Rocsi Diaz
as host. The red carpet was packed
with paparazzi who snapped pictures
of celebs like Hugh Jackman, Rita
Ora, Debra Messing, Martha Stewart,
Salman Rushdie, Montel Williams,
Selita Ebanks, Dee and Tommy
Hilfiger, Donna Karan, Star Jones,
Clive Davis and many more. Dinner
Chairs Hugh Jackman and his wife
Deborra-Lee Furness presented an
award to her mother, Fay Duncan
for her life’s work as the Founder of
Australia’s Fight Cancer Foundation.
The night’s two other honorees were
legendary art world visionary and
philanthropist Simon de Pury who
also conducted the live auction and
Seattle Genetics’ CEO and Co-Founder,
Dr. Clay Siegall whose pioneering
work with the cancer drug Adcetris
is saving the lives of those living
with lymphoma including Angel
Ambassador Ethan Zohn. Co-Founder
Denise Rich welcomed the crowd with
daughter Ilona Rich Schachter by her
side. A beautiful hush fell over the
room during their candlelit moment
of silence in memory of all of those
whose lives have been touched
by cancer.
The gala included one of the best
live shows to date beginning with
a powerful set by R&B legend
Chaka Khan. Later in the evening

Pharrell Williams took the stage with
DJ Kiss to perform a medley of his
hits including “Blurred Lines” and
“Get Lucky.” The crowd flooded
the dance floor and went wild when
surprise musical guest, Usher, joined
him onstage (shown left) to perform
another full set of tunes including the
hit “Yeah.” A highlight of the evening’s
live auction came when Tommy
Hilfiger and Usher got into a bidding
war for the legendary Richard Avedon
photograph, “Dovima with Elephants”
and Board Member Lorraine Schwartz
outbid them both to take the prize
home. With event design by Hélène
Benhamou & Adriana Weiss and décor

Flowers and Blooms, Founding Board
Member and Gala Chair Michèle Rella
thanked the co-chair committee for
all of their hard work and support. At
night’s end, guests stepped out into
the gorgeous autumn night with a
canvas “Limited” gift bag overflowing
with donated goodies. Pharrell
Williams spoke movingly of family
members lost to cancer and told the
assembled “You guys are saving lives
tonight.” (For more photos of the

Five Top
Scientific
Investigators
Selected
for UK Grants
Gabrielle’s Angel Foundation UK announced new
Medical Research Awards totaling £125,000.00 to five of
the United Kingdom’s best and brightest young scientific
investigators. With the help of a team of the UK’s
foremost experts in the hematologic malignancies,
in conjunction with Stephen D. Nimer, MD of the
Foundation’s US Medical Advisory Board, the Foundation
awarded one-year grants in the amount of £25,000.00
to each of the following: (shown left, top to bottom)
Adam Mead, University of Oxford; Bella Patel,
University College London; Clodagh Keohane, Guy’s and
St. Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust; Karin Ottersbach,
The University of Cambridge and Nicola Potter,
The Institute of Cancer Research. Additional grants were
given to select programs at the Great Ormond Street
Hospital, the Macmillan Cancer Centre, and St. John’s
Hospice for a grand total of £165,000.00. Coupled with
the grants awarded in 2012, Gabrielle’s Angel Foundation
UK has awarded grants totaling £215,000.00.
Carl June Gives Keynote Speech at Symposium
Our Fourth Annual Medical Symposium & Luncheon, held November 20th at The Loeb Boathouse at Central Park, was by some
accounts our best yet. The Foundation hosted over 50 of our grantees who were welcomed by Medical Advisory Board Chairman
Stephen D. Nimer, MD. Grantees past and present heard 11 presentations on the latest cutting-edge advancements being made
by the nation’s best physician-scientists. Donors and select press joined the afternoon session and were treated to a special
presentation by Medical Advisory Board member and leukemia research scientist Dr. Carl June whose pioneering work at the
University of Pennsylvania is curing patients of their leukemia. Co-Founder Denise Rich beamed with pride calling the scientists
the “real rock stars” and the entire room gave a standing ovation to AML survivor Suleika Jaouad after she shared her moving
story of survivorship. Collaborative grant recipient Ross Levine of Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center remarked that it was
“inspirational and catalytic for all of us!” We agree 100%, Dr. Levine.

Gabrielle’s dream. Thank you for working so hard to make a difference for those living with
cancer. We are proud to support your research.”

Nimer Rides Again in Miami Bike Challenge
On November 2–3, Medical Advisory Board Chairman, Dr. Stephen D. Nimer
completed 170 miles on his second annual Dolphins Cycling Challenge in Miami,
Florida. This two-day tri-county event donates 100% of the profits raised by
participating cyclists to the Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center of which
Dr. Nimer serves as director. A “Top Team Member” for Team UM Sylvester, Nimer
raised an incredible $52,620.00 for DDC IV which brought in a total of over $3.1
million for the cancer center. Miami Dolphins owner Stephen Ross presented Nimer
with the check at a Dolphin’s pre-game ceremony (shown left). In his second year at
the University of Miami, Nimer remarked, “The ride was amazing and inspiring! I am
so proud to be a member of the South Florida community as we came together to
support life-saving research.” Congratulations on another job well done, Dr. Nimer!

Michaela de Pury Joins Board
In December, art world impresario and philanthropist Dr. Michaela de Pury joined
the Foundation’s Board of Directors. Dr. de Pury (shown right) currently serves as
Co-Founder and Partner of de Pury de Pury, a company specializing in private treaty
sales and advising major private collections. Until recently, she served as Senior
Director at Phillips de Pury & Company and was instrumental in securing major
consignments and private transactions surrounding key works in all sales categories
of Contemporary Art, Design and Photography. Her consignments include the Hoener
Collection of German Expressionist Art in 2001, the FER Collection in 2004, and the
largest-ever single owner collection of contemporary Russian art in February 2007.
Early in her career, Dr. de Pury served as CEO of Neumeister Auctions in New York,
the leading Munich auction company founded by her father Rudolf Neumeister.
She obtained her Ph.D. from the University of Hamburg and trained at Christie’s in
London, Sotheby’s in New York and at Taijan in Paris. Dr. de Pury is married to one of
the art world’s leading figures, Simon de Pury former Chairman of Phillips de Pury &

Ruddy Family Welcomes New Angel
On November 16th, newly minted Angel Ambassador Erin Zammett Ruddy and her husband Nick Ruddy welcomed their third
little angel, Molly Kate. Adding a baby sister to their family of four carries special meaning for the Ruddy clan, as Erin is a
12-year chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML) survivor and had to go off of her life-saving medication, Gleevec, for the duration
of each of her three pregnancies. In her recent Yahoo Shine! Column, Erin wrote about resuming her cancer treatment and
remarked, “The number one thing to me has always been family. I didn’t want cancer to take my chance to have kids away
from me and it didn’t. I may still be in treatment but I am a survivor. I am proof that there is life after cancer; life with cancer.
You don’t often hear “having cancer” and “being lucky” in the same sentence but as I swallow my pill today—with my
three kids sitting around me—that’s exactly how I will be feeling. I know that I have won big time. And I will never forget it.”
Jaouad Wins Emmy!
New York Times columnist, patient advocate and leukemia survivor Suleika Jaouad
(shown left) can now add Emmy-winner to her resume. The Angel Ambassador nabbed the
prestigious golden statue for the companion video series to her New York Times “Well”
column, “Life, Interrupted.” Editor Tara Parker-Pope was on hand to celebrate with Suleika
and series producer Shayla Harris. Jaouad, whose column chronicles her life as a young
adult cancer patient, called standing on stage accepting the award “one of the most surreal,
amazing moments of my life.”
In Memoriam Janet Davison Rowley, M.D., D. Sc. 1925–2013
Gabrielle’s Angel Foundation mourns the passing of Medical Advisory Board member and cancer
research pioneer Janet D. Rowley, M.D., D.Sc. who died December 17th at the age of 88 from
complications of ovarian cancer. Dr. Rowley’s research in the 1970’s focused on chromosomal
abnormalities and established that cancer is a genetic disease. This led the New York Times to dub
her “the Matriarch of Modern Cancer Genetics.” Dr. Rowley’s discoveries changed the way cancer was
understood and treated, paving the way for targeted therapies such as Gleevec. Humble, hardworking
and a hero to many, Dr. Rowley received numerous accolades throughout her career including the
prestigious Lasker Award, the National Medal of Science and the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
Medical Advisory Board member Jerome Groopman, M.D. remembered Dr. Rowley as “...both
a towering intellect and an extraordinary soul, brilliant in her work and unparalleled as a mentor
and inspiration. We honor her memory by doing the best we possibly can for so many in need.”

On September 12th, the Foundation held its first-ever patient advocacy
event, “Conversations About Cancer: Fertility, Intimacy & You” which
brought together patients and healthcare providers to address the
important issues patients deal with when faced with a cancer diagnosis.
The six-member panel included Dr. Sage Bolte as moderator and Angel
Ambassadors Suleika Jaouad and Ethan Zohn representing patient
perspectives. Other panelists included Christopher Anrig, LCSW-R,
Dr. Mercedes Castiel of Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center and
Foundation grantee Dr. Shari Goldfarb all of whom spoke from a medical
standpoint on topics exploring the effects of chemotherapy on fertility,
treatment-induced sexual dysfunction and dating after cancer. Also
emphasized was the need for patients and doctors to discuss openly
these important and sensitive issues. Special thanks to Judith R. King and
King + Co. for kindly donating their space. Gabrielle’s Angel Foundation
hopes this will be the first in a series of important discussions facing
cancer patients today.

offer to patients. It means so much to not only us as researchers, we are secondary in this, it means the world to the
