Pastor’s Column
I have been working out with a group since
November 2015. We have sweated and ached
together. We have unrepentantly harassed our
fitness trainer together when workout tasks
seemed too hard. We have rejoiced together
when new fitness goals were achieved. I am so
thankful to know these people and to have
become ‘partners in fitness crime’ together!

Our latest endeavor—the Warrior Dash! The
Warrior Dash is a 5k Mud run with 12 obstacles
like the Goliath and Fisherman’s Catch. Goliath
is a giant slide into a pit of muddy water.
Fisherman’s catch is a giant fish net stretched
across a pit. Our group has been signed up for
the Warrior Dash in New Lawrence, Ohio since
early May. All summer I have waffled between
being excited
because frankly I
love to play in the
mud and thrive on
overcoming
physical
challenges, and
being anxious
because I have had
an injured left
shoulder since
early June and was
afraid I wouldn’t be
able to do all the
obstacles.
So, I was incredibly
anxious as my workout buddies and I headed
up Interstate 76 early Sunday morning on
August 21st. As we drew closer to the race
sight, the tension in the vehicle mounted. “How
long do you think it will take us to do the race?”
someone asked. “I’m most worried about the
mud. I don’t like getting dirty,” said someone
else. “My challenge is heights,” said a couple
more people. “I’m worried about re-injuring my
shoulder. It’s just starting to feel good again,” I
said. The whole group was nervous, each in
our own way, about the physical and metal
challenges ahead of us.
We finally arrived, got our registration packets,
checked our bags into the bag check, and
headed for the start line. Crowded together like
cattle with about 50 other people, we waited for
the start signal. I suddenly recalled what our
fitness coach said once during a workout, “Are
you ready?” “No,” I said. “Well, you’re next. Get
going,” he replied. When the start signal
blared, we did just that. Together we got going,
together we ran the race set before us, and
together we conquered each obstacle.
That was my favorite part-the sense of
comradery. We functioned as a community, as
a team who looked out for one another. I mean
we ran at different paces because of differing
physical abilities so we often arrived at each
obstacle apart. BUT, once there, the group
waited on the other side until everyone had
made it over or under or through the obstacles
before taking off again. It was as if the
unspoken creed we collectively agreed upon
was: leave no woman or man behind to face
these challenges alone. We’re in this together!
Crossing the finish line
was AWESOME! We all
made it! Mud soaked and
smelling pretty ripe, we
immediately began
chattering about the
more memorable, funny,
scary, and favorite
moments of the race. We
laughed and
commiserated about the
mud and the smell! We
asked a stranger to take
our picture and text it to
us because we just had
to capture the moment!
What a great day of fellowship and fun and
friendship!
On the ride home, I kept thinking of Hebrews
2:1: Therefore, since we are surrounded by so
great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside
every weight and sin that clings so closely, and
let us run the race that is set before us…
Dear people of God, whatever challenges—
physical, mental, emotional, spiritual—that are
weighing on you, I pray you find yourselves
surrounded and supported by friends, family or
a community who will help and encourage you
to run the race set before you with courage and
faith!
Blessings,
Pastor Kara

ELCA Churchwide Assembly key
actions
Voting members of the Evangelical Lutheran
Church in America (ELCA) approved a number
of key actions during the 2016 ELCA
Churchwide Assembly held in New Orleans
Aug. 8-13. The assembly is the highest
legislative authority of the church.
The 945 voting members:
•
Elected William B. Horne II of St. Paul's
Lutheran Church, Clearwater, Fla., vice
president of the ELCA. Horne was
installed during closing worship Aug. 13.
•
Accepted the "Declaration on the Way,"
a unique ecumenical document that
marks a path toward greater unity
between Catholics and Lutherans. At the
heart of the document are 32
"Statements of Agreement" that state
where Lutherans and Catholics do not
have church-dividing differences on
topics about church, ministry and the
Eucharist. The document also presents
the differences that remain.
•
Approved AMMPARO – the ELCA's
strategy to Accompany Migrant Minors
with Protection, Advocacy,
Representation and Opportunities. The
ELCA developed this strategy based on
commitments to uphold and guarantee
the basic human rights and safety of
migrant children and their families; to
address the root causes of migration in
countries from Central America's
Northern Triangle and Mexico and the
treatment of migrants in transit; to work
toward just and humane policies
affecting migrants in and outside the
U.S.; to engage as a church with all of
its companions, affiliates and partners to
respond to the migration situation and its

•
causes; and to advocate for migrant children
and their families.
Approved the Ministry of Word and Service
roster. Beginning Jan. 1, 2017, ELCA
associates in ministry, deaconesses and
diaconal ministers will be a single, unified
roster of Ministry of Word and Service. The
accompanying constitutional amendments
related to the roster were also considered
and approved by the assembly.
Approved the 2017-2019 budget proposal.
The budget includes a 2017 current fund
spending authorization of $65,296,005 and a
2017 ELCA World Hunger spending
authorization of $24.8 million; a 2018 current
fund income proposal of $64,057,220 and a
2018 ELCA World Hunger income proposal
of $25 million; a 2019 current fund income
proposal of $64,151,175 and a 2019 ELCA
World Hunger income proposal of $25
million; and authorizes the Church Council to
establish a spending authorization after
periodic review of revised income estimates.
Approved various memorials – or proposals –
from the ELCA's 65 synods. In addition to
memorials considered "en bloc," the
assembly separately approved the following:
deepening relationships with historic Black
churches; toward a responsible energy
future; repudiation of the Doctrine of
Discovery; peace with justice in the Holy
Land; justice for the Holy Land through
responsible investment; African Descent
Lutherans; call to discernment on U.S.
foreign and military policy; welcoming
refugees; and supporting military personnel,
veterans and their families.
Elected members to serve on: Church
Council, Portico Benefits Services, Mission
Investment Fund, Augsburg Fortress,
Committee on Appeals, Committee on
Discipline and Nominating Committee.
Adopted amendments to the ELCA
Constitution, Bylaws and Continuing
Resolutions.

CROP Walk “Fun Run”
What does CROP stand for?
When CROP began in 1947 (under the wing of
Church World Service, which was founded in
1946), CROP was an acronym for the Christian
Rural Overseas Program. Its primary mission
was to help Midwest farm families to share their
grain with hungry neighbors in post-World War
II Europe and Asia.
Today, we’ve outgrown the acronym but we
retain it as the historic name of the program.
CROP Hunger Walks are interfaith hunger
education and fundraising events sponsored by
Church World Service and organized by CWS
local offices across the U.S.
People of all ages are invited to participate
Sunday, October 9, 3 pm. This year, the Delmont Ministerial Association
is reviving the Delmont Area CROP Walk, but
with a twist. Rather than gathering sponsors,
folks are invited to register for a Fun Run/Fun
Walk - either the 1 mile route, or a 5k route,
and bring nonperishable food items along with
their donations and registration fee to
participate. More details about the walk are coming, such
as the route details. The 25% that will return to the community will
go the Food Bank at Grace United Church of
Christ in Jeannette, which serves families
throughout our area, including Delmont and
Salem Township. In a world of floods and crop failures, drought
and overwhelmed refugee camps, we can help
end hunger, one step at a time. To donate or register online, go to
crophungerwalk.org, look for the Delmont
PA Walk and then choose the Delmont
Dashes Hunger Team. Or register yourself
and then ask friends and family to donate online to you.

Beyond Our Walls
2016 SWPA Synod Assembly
The 2016 Synod Assembly was held on June
17-18, 2016 at California University of
Pennsylvania. The theme was “We Are
Stewards of the Gospel." Pastor Kara attended
along with Ron Painter and Ronna Yeager as
representatives of Salem Lutheran Church.
Highlights and Actions of the 2016 Synod
Assembly:
- Adopted the proposed Synod budget for
2017 with 48% level of support to the ELCA.
- Adopted the following Mission support
formula: As congregations we ask our
members to give proportionally according to the
gifts God has entrusted to them. As the Church,
we ask our synods to give proportionally as
they have been blessed. As the SWPA Synod,
we encourage each congregation to give
proportionally. Each congregation is asked to
give a minimum of 12% of its current operating
expense to synodical Mission Support. If you
are below 12%, please set a goal for your
congregation to grow to at least 12%,
according to the gifts God has entrusted to you.
If it will take more than 1 year, take a faithful
step toward that goal in 2017. The Synod
Council may request consultation with
congregations which have decreased their
commitment from the previous year.
- Adopted changes to the Minimum
Compensation Guidelines for Full-Time and
Part-Time Ordained Ministers, for Associates in
Ministry, Diaconal Ministers, and Deaconesses,
and for Interim Ministry for 2017. Adopted an
increase of $50 for continuing education for
Full-Time and Part-Time Ordained Ministers,
for Associates in Ministry, Diaconal Ministers,
and Deaconesses in 2017.
PAGE 10
- Adopted a resolution in Support of the
Unification of Pennsylvania Seminaries
expressing affirmation and encouragement to the
Lutheran Theological Seminary at Gettysburg and
the Lutheran Theological Seminary at
Philadelphia as they continue in this process of
unification; encouraging care and concern with
faculty and staff who may be personally impacted
by this unification that their years of service be
honored appropriately; encouraging all our
congregations and other ministries to redouble
their efforts to identify, nurture, and support those
who sense a call to public rostered ministries; and
pledged its strongest possible continuing financial
support and encouraged all congregations and
individuals to likewise continue and expand their
generous support.
- Adopted a memorial directing the Synod
Council to develop a pilot program to equip a
group of congregations of this synod to
develop and implement triennial ROSE
statements (Rationale, Clear Objectives,
Strategies, Evaluation) as a practical
assessment of both viability and fidelity to the
Gospel mission.
ELCA Representative, Ms. Dana Dutcher,
Manager for Relationships, Asia Pacific and
Madagascar, West and Central Africa, Global
Mission Unit of the Evangelical Lutheran Church
in America, addressed the assembly speaking
about evangelism through her work in Singapore
and in China.

Stewardship principle of the month “ Give proportionately.”
In his book Giving to God: the Bible’s Good News about Living a Generous Life, Dr. Mark Allan Powell, biblical
scholar and professor at Trinity Lutheran Seminary in Columbus, OH writes:
Churches cost money to operate and, in most cases they depend on the
“if the eagerness is there,
contributions of their members to meet these expenses. One duty or
the gift is acceptable
responsibility of belonging to a church is supporting that church financially;
according
to what one
all church members should contribute fairly to meet the costs of the
has - not according to what
community’s life and mission. As for the amount, the Bible says that
one does not have.”
everyone is to give “according to means” (2 Corinthians 8:3,11). This means
that Christian communities are committed to egalitarianism: giving should
2 Corinthians 8:12
be proportionate to one’s assets and those who are able to give much are
never to be esteemed above those who are only able to give a little.
In church ministry, every penny, dollar, hundred dollars, or more that a child, teenager, or adult chooses to give
counts! Furthermore, giving much or giving little does not add or diminish God’s regard or favor or blessing or
love for a person. God, I believe, simply asks us to give joyfully as we are able as an expression of gratitude and
trust in the One who loves us all equally. God receives whatever we can give and uses it to accomplish God’s
purposes for God’s people. The Bible is quite clear that God has the power and creativity and might to do this—
to take whatever we can give, much or little, and use it to support the many and varied ministries that happen
inside and outside our church walls. What good news this has always been to me!--Pastor Kara

“Learning to Walk in the Dark”
by Barbara Brown Taylor
What does Taylor mean by darkness? Darkness,
she writes, is “shorthand for anything that scares
me.” That could include something
as profound as the absence of
God to the fear of dementia to the
loss of family and friends, as well
as that “nagging” question of
“what it will feel like to die.” She
recounts how she became
impatient with church teachings
that accentuated the light while
denying the existence of
darkness, and comments on the
difference between faith and
belief, certainty and trust. An
elegant writer with the common
touch, Taylor is always a
wonderful guide to the spiritual
world, and this book is no exception. Here she
encourages us to turn out the lights and embrace
the spiritual darkness, for it is in the dark, she
maintains, that one can truly see. --June Sawyers
