Welcome to the Spring edition of the Archery GB Development newsletter, in which you will find updates
on what the team has been up to recently and their plans over the coming months.
NEW INSTRUCTOR AWARD
The Archery GB Instructor Award has now been
launched with Sports Structures as the official
delivery partner. The
course is available
nationwide and is the
entry level training
course for instructing
beginners. From 31
December 2014, the Leader Award will no longer
be available.

THE BIGGEST BIG
WEEKEND YET
Bigger and better than
ever, this year’s Archery
Big Weekend was a
huge success, despite the glorious British weather!
Around 80 clubs introduced thousands of people,
of all ages and abilities, to the great sport of archery
over the Spring Bank Holiday weekend, having lots
of fun in the process!

ACTIVE PEOPLE SURVEY
Sport England’s Active People Survey (APS7)
shows the number of archers participating
once a week has risen from 34,900 to 36,300.
The first Active People Survey in 2006
recorded 23,400 once a week archers, so you
can see that the number of people shooting
regularly has increased quite considerably
over the last eight years.
Archery was only one of five sports that
recorded an increase, with many sports
recording a decrease. The challenge for the
future remains to sustain this growth and
develop all aspects of the sport so it can cope
with the increase.
WORKFORCE PLAN
PROTECTING PLAYING FIELDS
For the first time, archery is eligible for
Sport England’s Protecting Playing Fields
funding scheme.
The sport’s inclusion follows the creation
of Archery GB’s Facility Strategy and the
facility audit conducted in 2013. More than
65 percent of clubs returned information
which allowed Archery GB to prove to
Sport England that archery is a playing field
sport.
In 2014 Archery GB aims to increase coach and
judge training opportunities. To read the

NEW COMPETITION FORMAT FOR
SCHOOLS
The team are delighted to announce the launch of
a new team archery competition format aimed at
11-14 year olds. The aim of the School v School
Challenge is to engage more schools at L2 of the
School Games. They have also developed an
inclusive archery format which will increase
opportunities for young people with disabilities to
compete on a local and regional level. Visit the

MONEY MONEY MONEY
Nearly £7,000 from the first round of the FE/HE
Funding Scheme has been awarded to seven
educational establishments to increase existing
archery activity. Round 2 will be launched in
September.
Five FE colleges have been awarded £1,800
each to develop archery satellite clubs linking
with a local archery club.
Five universities have been awarded £2,000
each to develop new archery clubs as part of
our year one HE programme.
INCREASING PARTICIPATION
DEVELOPMENT
WORKSHOP
PROGRAMME
Earlier in the year
the Development
team held a series
of
workshops,
offering more indepth support to
those interested in
learning
more
about the specified
topics.
65 volunteers took part in the programme, which
included Pass it On: Disability Awareness, Deliver
Archery as a Business and Better Club Coaching.
Given the positive feedback received, the team are
looking to offer more workshops like these in the
near future.

The team are working with five clubs over the next
12-18 months that are willing to investigate ways
to increase regular participation of archers at club
level.
Clubs will receive support from Archery GB and
other organisations where applicable. They will be
willing to embrace new ideas and create a
development plan designed to increase regular
participation. In return for increasing regular
participation, Archery GB will provide funding to
help achieve the club’s aims and development.

COUNTY DEVELOPMENT COORDINATORS
The Development team held another annual CDC
workshop in March. With more CDCs attending than
ever before, it allowed the event to be the best yet.
Everyone in attendance contributed to the positive
‘can do’ atmosphere and went away the better for
attending. A packed weekend dealt with issues like
growing participation, facilities, County issues and
clubs working together. For more information about

SUMMER STARS
This
summer
a new
archery
programme called Archery Summer Stars is being
launched. It is a fun way to introduce young people
to archery, using Arrows or traditional equipment.
It is a summer holiday scheme for clubs, local
authorities and leisure centres to run archery for 814 year olds, and each course can be tailored
towards the needs of the participants.

DISABILITY PLAN
“An extremely enjoyable;
informative and inspirational
weekend!”
INSPIRED FACILITIES
Clubs (with a minimum seven-year lease) can bid
for grants of between £20,000 and £75,000.
Inspired
Facilities
funding has
already had a
positive
effect
on
archery
clubs. Valley
Bowmen of Huddersfield used the funding to
create a secure store, kitchen and a toilet block
including all necessary services and with provision
for access for all. More recently, Tockington
Archers (£24,359), Redhill Archers and Derwent
Bowmen (both £50,000) have benefited from the
funding.
With the benefit of funding from Sport
England and the Worshipful Company of
Fletchers, Archery GB has, for the first time,
the resources to initiate purposeful
development in grassroots disability archery.
The new Disability Plan for 2014-17 will
shortly be launched which aims to
demonstrate a ‘growth in participation’ by
disabled people and ensure that more
disabled people have the opportunity to
participate in archery. This will also include
small scale disability delivery funding for local
clubs and organisations to bid for.
ontarget AWARDS
Winners of the 2013 ontarget Club & Volunteer
Awards have been announced. The awards aim to
celebrate those clubs working hard to promote and
grow archery and also honour the dedicated
volunteers who give up their spare time to archery.

ontarget CLUB COMPETITION
The ontarget Club Competition is aiming to boost
the idea that competition can be fun!
The Arrows programme is growing in popularity
and there are now 220 schools and organisations
that have purchased packs and are delivering this
‘mini version’ of archery to young people in a fun
and safe way. Visit www.archerygb.org/arrows for

In June, we will launch Archery GBs new ‘Arrows
Young Leader Award’. The course prepares young
people aged 14-19 years of age to become the
driving force in setting up their own archery club!
In order to
encourage
more clubs to
enter, all
ontarget clubs
(excluding
school and
university
clubs) are
automatically
entered into
the 2014
competition.

CALLING ALL FIELD ARCHERS
Courses can be delivered by teachers or coaches
who have a good knowledge of ‘Arrows Archery’.

EXTERNAL PROVIDERS
This year, as well as renewing the Target
Archery Facilities Strategy, a field archery
strategy will also be created. This will be a
first for the organisation. All field archers,
including potential or lapsed field archers,
are being asked to complete a short survey
before the 30 May 2014. The survey can be

The team are looking to build up their knowledge
on external providers, businesses, leisure centres
and coaches that are delivering archery outside of
the Archery GB club network.
