Check updates and “like us.” Use this to invite
others for upcoming events and share your sense
of God working in your day.
We invite you to join with our local
corporate helpers in supporting the
children
of
the
Domestic Violence
Services of Lancaster.
Beginning now, the collection will
culminate on September 27, in
conjunction with the Thrivent Build.
The shelter is in need of the following items to fill
their welcome bags with: night light, each child is
given a night light to help make them feel safe;
fleece blankets; shampoo/conditioner/body wash/
lotions; small stuffed animal; paperback books - all
ages from small (from as young as 2 and 3
year olds) to books suitable for teens; "take-along"
style games; puzzle books; color books, crayons;
pens/pencils. Local corporate helpers are donating
toothpaste, tooth brushes and floss!
When a child is in the shelter, and their special day
comes around, the shelter tries to make each child
feel special and not forgotten. One way they do this
is to celebrate their birthday if it occurs during
their stay at the shelter. A local bakery donates a
cake for each child as needed, but the shelter
needs help to make it a true party for the child. They
need: decorated paper plates, in designs suitable
for toddlers (ex: Sesame Street, Disney, etc.) up
to teenagers; decorated napkins; decorated cups;
party hats; balloons; crepe paper.
The Choir will gather for the first
rehearsal of the Fall Season on
Thursday, September 4 at
7:30 PM.
Anyone who enjoys singing is
welcome to attend and see what all the
excitement is about.

A Moment
May I observe: attendance has been down and
giving is not helping sustain the budget the
congregation approved. The probable response is
to wring our hands and if we ignore it long enough
maybe it will “auto correct” come Christmas.
(Maybe that’s true…but would you count on a gas
station in the middle of a desert you’ve never
traveled if you want to get out?) The “visioning” I
ask us to consider is to be purposeful in our
choices for a future. The vision I’m talking about is
NOT a money item, but is about the attitude we
bring to defining our sense of call plus serving the
church now and for the future.
The IT Group is an example: we knew we MUST
use technology—so…1. What is needed and 2.
Who can help set a course to accomplish that
“future” which we need? That is as true in working
with our families and children, how the building
needs to change to conform to our needs, the use
of social media, inviting people into our gathering,
using the festivals of Christmas and Easter,
considering Peter’s Porch and its related
opportunities, etc. But I sense that is the problem; I
should not be defining this. The critical first step
may be an updated church directory done in new
and more flexible formats (hardcopy and
electronic); but I don’t know that. Yet, I sense it is
time to think into our future. We have to be like a
football team—we play the game we face but aim
at the Super Bowl. There is the immediate aspect
to what is the future. Let’s start now. Let’s start a
visioning process.
With blessings…Pastor Joe
Matthew 16:22 “God forbid it, Lord! This
must never happen to you.” 23But he turned
and said to Peter, “Get behind me Satan.”
It is the end of summer…what a bummer. No
doubt the kids are thinking it, the adults are
experiencing it, and the seniors are pondering:
“one more summer done and gone.” Do we have a
problem with what we put “behind us?” Jesus
clearly needs to have a forward focus. Of
“necessity” (literally the Greek word “dei” is that) is
why Jesus has to go to Jerusalem and face the
cross. What he places behind was necessary to
the events that come ahead.
That is where I think we are. I live on the basis of
what is ahead: I’m thinking about Christmas and
“The Build” and All Saints Sunday and the
Blessing of the Animals and starting catechism
(yes—a reminder to students and parents). Now,
the other part is like Peter: we are prone to say
what can’t or shouldn’t be done. There is a lot of
Peter in Joe Veres when judging what is
“possible.” I suspect many of us (if candid about
our choices) would agree. We are predisposed to
nix what is viewed as beyond reach, too difficult, or
(more likely) what “I really don’t want to have
happen.” We are “counter-cross” people. (I’ll leave
you to read Matthew 16:21-28 to figure that one
out if you are not here Sunday, August 31st.) We
are not cross bearers – at least willingly – because
of the association to suffering and death. The
reality is the life portion…the cross is also about
the third day where Jesus is raised from the bad,
icky thing called death.
I am working out of step with what I am about to
do. Normally, I’d float this in front of Council and
start there. I sense this needs to be a “macro
conversation”…a discussion of the whole
(including those of you who have been less
present this summer). We have to ask, “What is
our future?” Where is the road leading Faith
United? What is our vision?
Help! I need somebody…
not just anybody...
Pastor Joe is learning Facebook and other
social media. He needs some tutoring. Will
you help… and maybe help guide using
social media at Faith United?
Peter’s Porch gives school supplies to the
children of the participants. To replenish
funds for next year, please mark your
envelope “Pastor’s Discretionary Fund School Supplies.”
The normal response to so broad a question:
‘that’s why we have a pastor…so tell us!’ No, my
friends, our future is in what WE are doing. Yes, I
know that the pastor is a guide and maybe a voice
to help focus on such things. Yet, necessity
dictates the question: “What do you think we need
to be doing?” That hinges on our seeing inside the
life of the church; then what that means to our
reaching to the community outside the church.
MOOVELOUS MOO MONEY!
On the cabinet,
there is a basket and poster on the wall. Please drop
off your Turkey Hill milk caps to help Kiddie Korner.
Turkey Hill donates money to the pre-school for each cap!

Congregation Council Report
July 2, 2014
Attendance: Mitch Arment, Bruce Carpenter, Lew Demler, Brad
Fichthorn, Dawn Frees, Scott Gola, Traci Krick, Tracy Nissly, Lori
Stover and Pastor Joe.
Traci began the meeting by reading several articles with an
emphasis on service for others and paying it forward.
Minutes of the June meeting were approved with no corrections.
Unfinished Business – Lori reviewed the agenda for the August 24
Congregational Meeting. It will include a financial update, Salem
campus update, and a vote regarding rescinding or not rescinding the
sell vote from the December 2013 Congregational Meeting.
After discussion, Council decided to have the same offering
envelopes ordered for 2015.
The Salem utility bills, including PPL, Good’s Disposal, and
Windstream were forwarded to Luthercare by Brad. Todd Stewart
will follow up with Kurt Evans from Luthercare.
Newspaper Ad – Traci reported that the INTELLIGENCER
JOURNAL has a 75,000 hard copy circulation and has website
viewers. One event a week will be given free ad space for one week.
The cost of running a church ad is $1.91per week per line, to be paid
monthly. A decision on the ad will be added to the September agenda.
Sound System – Dave Brumbach provided three handouts regarding
the sound system. Council discussed the continuing issues, including
the humming, especially on the webcam. Lew has some ideas to
decrease the humming. Mitch also submitted a written report of
issues that he identified as corrected and uncorrected. The nursery
still needs worship access.
Constitution – Dawn finally finished the total update of the FUEL
constitution. It is now in line with the ELCA recommendations. Most of
the changes were needed to bring it in line with the electronic age.
All agreed to bring the changes to the congregation for approval with
60 days notice. The vote on the changes will be called at the
December Congregational Meeting.
IT – Mitch said that photos are still needed for the website. Lew will
buy two identical computers. (This purchase was previously
approved.) Lew suggested that Skye be used instead of the webcam
until the problems can be identified and resolved.
Treasurer’s Report – Scott commented on the finances. Faith’s
income is $20,000 under budget. Fortunately expenses are under
budget too. The budget will be relieved with the removal of Salem’s
utility bills. These expenses are now absorbed by Luthercare. Faith
no longer gets rent from the Salem sanctuary. Moving forward,
expenses versus current versus benevolence offerings will be
published in the bulletin.
All approved to spend the already budgeted money for the two
computers mentioned in the IT report.
Scott was given the authority to establish such new accounts as
necessary for the operational business of the church with the proper
signatories on these accounts subject to Scott’s discretion and the
Executive Committee.
Fellowship – Traci reported on Fellowship for Tim Hegeman. The
Church Picnic was a success. There will be a meeting in July. Snacks
will be needed for the Congregational Meeting in August. Food will be
served during the Habitat Build. The Committee is considering a
dinner for men during October. Any questions or comments will be
welcomed by Tim.
Traci will coordinate gathering supplies for children’s birthday
celebrations at the Lancaster Domestic Shelter. She plans to do this
twice a year. Different organizations cover this other months.
Lew reported that Windstream will upgrade their services to us at
no charge.
New business – The next meeting will be August 6 at 7:00 PM. Lori
will be on vacation. Brad will conduct the meeting. Dawn will be on
vacation and Tracy will write the minutes.
Meeting adjourned.
Dawn O. Frees, Council Secretary
June 4, 2014
Attendance: Dave Brumbach, Bruce Carpenter, Brad Fichthorn,
Dawn Frees, Steve Gerhart, Traci Krick, Tracy Nissly, Lori Stover and
Pastor Joe. Terry Burkholder was present to give the quarterly Peter’s
Porch Report.
Steve began the meeting with a recitation of Franklin Delano
Roosevelt’s prayer concerning D Day. He pointed out the prayer’s
relevance for today’s world.
Peter’s Porch Three Month Update From Terry – A Peter’s Porch
recipient will recycle the cardboard; a Cocalico student was honored
for his work with the school food bank and Peter’s Porch, Terry was
pleased to attend; Sharp Shopper will help when food is needed;
$196.80 in grant money will be spent by the deadline of July 1;
$5,895.94 is the current balance in the Peter’s Porch fund; Millersville
University students want to have meeting times with Peter’s Porch
clients for health teaching; Muddy Creek Church is having a Porch
Sale of non-perishable items with the proceeds coming to Peter’s
Porch; Espenshade’s will donate plants; the Denver Lions will give
extra bread; Reading Body, a company from Bowmansville, donated
the leftovers from their Company Picnic; there was a donation of new
shoes and groceries; Vicki Meckley is teaching the clients to make
homemade laundry soap, cheaply; Fruitastic donates vegetables.
The Worlines are picking up 1,000 pounds of potatoes for
distribution. There is a CAP meeting on June 24. The cost of packing
a 40 pound bag of groceries ranges from $2.40 to $3.11. Inexpensive
meat is scarce because of the ongoing drought. Terry calculated
about 142 hours a month of volunteer time is spent on Peter’s Porch.
Minutes of the May meeting, approved with no corrections.
Unfinished business – Dave reported for Lew on the internet. The
internet provider change is still in flux, Windstream versus Pen-TeleData. There needs to be an IT meeting, a jobs list compiled, and the
items divided among Committee members.
Council had lots of discussion about the sound system. The
warranty ends in August. It was decided that a check list of faulty
items needs to be compiled. Lori will appoint a coordinator to deal with
the issues with the company.
Security – There was discussion on the pros and cons of locking the
doors to the nave when unoccupied. The decision on the type of lock
will be up to the Property Committee.
Pastor’s report – Acts of Love begins on Monday.
Vacation Bible School is on track.
CAP wants Faith’s Peter’s Porch’s spread sheet to use as an
example.
The pastor will be attending Synod Assembly on Friday and
Saturday.
IT – Mitch asked that the website compiler gets photos for the
website promptly.
No Treasurer’s Report
Fellowship – Traci K. suggested that we list Faith’s information in the
INTELLIGENCER JOURNAL. She will call the paper to check on the
procedure and the cost.
She suggested a fund-raiser for the future, a friendly competition
among teams from other churches.
The Committee is planning an October Fest for the men because
of the success of the Women’s Banquet.
Care Of Members – The Committee will follow up with phone calls to
the inactives who did not respond to the letters.
Worship And Music – The inventory of the sanctuary items will be
done by the end of the month.
Miscellaneous Items – A Council member was visiting other
churches and noticed that the bulletins were shorter and the hymnals
were used more than just for hymns. Food for Thought. He also noted
that the weekly offering and attendance were listed in the bulletin. All
agreed to this idea. Dawn will speak with Shirley to ask her to add
this.
The pastor is asking for special ideas for summer.
The pastor took Todd Stewart’s idea of electricity savings to the
Synod. He got a positive response from the treasurer with regards to
sharing the idea with other congregations.
Salem Task Force – Council decided on a Congregational Meeting
with an update on the Task Force’s research. Lori will ask that an
update from the Task Force be added to the next newsletter. At the
meeting, the Task Force will recommend a vote to rescind the
previous vote from December 2013. The meeting will be scheduled for
August 24 after the combined service.
New business – none

Take A Load Off...Your
Child’s Back
Consider the following suggestions
when
selecting
your
child’s
backpack:
 Buy a backpack with two wide,
padded straps that go over the
shoulders. Make sure your child
uses both straps.
 Choose a backpack with a
padded waist or chest belt. This distributes weight
more evenly across the body. Multiple
compartments also help distribute the weight.
 Your child’s backpack should not be wider than
his body.
 Consider choosing a backpack with a metal frame
like hikers use or on wheels, like a flight
attendant’s bag. Check with your child’s school
first to see if these types of bags are allowed.
 When fully loaded, your child’s backpack should
weigh less than 15 percent of his body weight.
Use your bathroom scale to measure the
maximum backpack load so your child can know
what it should feel like.
 Make sure your child isn’t toting unnecessary
items like laptops, CD players and video games.
These can add a lot of pounds.
 Heavier items should be placed closer to the back
of the backpack, near the body.
 Picking up the backpack properly is important. As
with any heavy object, your child should bend at
the knees and grab the pack with both hands
when lifting it to his shoulders.
Maybe this will help lighten the load on your child’s
back.

Faith United Evangelical Lutheran Church
Hey Kids and Parents!
Pizza Olympics
Get ready for the start of this year’s
Sunday School Program.
One of the ideas that was generated as we
looked back on last year was to create
some extra days of fun activities during the
Sunday School hour. We will use this year
to test drive the idea by scheduling some
“Sunday Fun Days” throughout the year.
We will begin on Sunday, September
7th. Classes will meet from 9:00-9:45
AM each Sunday. Our Youth Choir
will practice from 9:45-10:10 AM.
What better way to kick-off Sunday School
than to do it with our first “Fun Day”!
We are using a new and very exciting
curriculum this year called “The Story”.
It is a series of lessons related to bible
stories and will encourage both kids
and parents to engage by reading the
bible here at church and at home!
The Pizza Olympics will be held on
Sunday, September 7th. We will be playing
pizza related games and making and eating
our own pizzas!
Winters Scholarship
The Olympics will include all Sunday
School and Catechism students and their
family members. It should be a great
opportunity to meet each other as we
organize our Sunday School Classes.
Congratulations to Emma Frees and
Sarah Kreider who have been selected
as recipients of the Sara Winters
Scholarship for the 2014-15 school
year. Emma will be starting her
freshman year at Ursinus College and
Sarah is heading back to Elizabethtown
College for her second year. Best of
Luck to both girls in there collegiate
endeavors!
Hope to see you all there!!!

PETER’S PORCH
OCTOBER 4, 2014
“Laundry Soap Demonstration”
We will be doing a “step-by-step demonstration”
of making your own laundry liquid detergent.
Weather permitting, we will do this on the
parking lot. If you have never done this before or
tried to do it and it didn’t work so well - this
demo is for you! You can learn to make 10
gallons of super clean smelling, low suds, and
great cleaning product for only $2.50. Save
money and have a great product to use.
Bring your teens, friends, relatives, or a spouse.
Help your budget to cover more expenses and
make grocery bills go down.
A recipe will be handed out and a sample for
you to try.
INGATHERING
The Social Ministry Committee is preparing for
Lutheran World Relief’s Annual Ingathering
Sunday. A display of examples of each type of kit
(Personal Care Kits, Baby Kits, Fabric Kits, School
Kits—the Committee provides the backpacks—
and bars of soap) will be on a table at the back of
the Sanctuary with a list of the requested items
beginning Sunday, September 7, 2014.
Cozy Comforters will supply the comforters.
All the kit supplies must be
brought to the Church by
Ingathering Sunday, October 5.
Watch the Newsletter for the dates of our
Comforter Auction, Soup and Bake Sales,
and Christmas Giving Tree.

learning to dance in the rain.”
Memorial Garden Contributions
After much hard work by the Memorial Garden
Committee, we have a beautiful new space to enjoy
and share with the community. As planned, the
plant sponsorships have significantly helped to
defray some of the cost of this project. Like
many good projects, this one has cost beyond what
was originally planned.
If you would like to continue to support the
Memorial Garden project through your weekly
offering, please simply write 'Memorial Garden' on
your offering envelope. Thank you!

Heart Offering
Memorial Garden
Helpers
Our entrances are places of welcome. There are
vases at the back of the Church. We
invite you to provide cut flowers from
your garden this summer to welcome
everyone coming to Church.
Simply take a vase one week,
fill it and bring it back the
following week and place it at
one entry. If you wish to
offer a larger bouquet, still take a vase,
but you may need to use a personal
vase to fit your arrangement.
Helpers are needed to water and
weed the Memorial Garden. This is an
easy chore when done weekly to
keep it ready for us and guests.
Please sign the chart on the cabinet to help.
Remote Access To Worship
If you have a health condition that prevents you from
attending Sunday Worship and have a computer,
you can have remote access set up so you can “attend”
the Worship Service.
If you are interested in this feature, please call the
Church Office at 717-336-2141, Monday-Friday, 9:00 AM
to 1:00 PM.
Fair Trade Coffee, Tea, and Cocoa are
available for purchase on the table at the back of
