Welcome
A Welcome from City Mayor Tom Bednarek
I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for reading the Fox Lake Visitors Guide. We are very
proud of our community and hope that you will enjoy learning about Fox Lake. We strive to provide a
clean, healthy, and safe environment and are committed to preserving an exceptional “quality of life”
for everyone who visits.
If you decide to stay in our community, either temporarily or permanently, I hope you will have an opportunity to take advantage of your favorite water sport on the lake or at our aquatic center, golfing at our
18-hole golf course, dining at one of our restaurants, enjoying one of our many beautiful parks or library,
and shopping at our many downtown businesses. If you have any questions about the Fox Lake area, feel
free to stop in at City Hall, and one of our friendly staff members will be happy to answer those for you.
Sincerely, Mayor Tom Bednarek

A Welcome from Town Chairperson Dean Streich
We would like to welcome you to the Town of Fox Lake and our neighbor, the City of Fox Lake.
We would like you to take a drive and view our beautiful lake from the following roads: Chief Kuno,
Howard Dr., Black Hawk Trail and Indian Point Rd., like our ancestors did in the 1800s by horseback
to make this their home.
We invite you to visit our lake for swimming, boating and fishing, or just a relaxing day on the water.
This is a place your children can enjoy and talk about for years.
While you are here, be sure to visit our fine dining establishments on the lake – Hayes Resort, Boat House,
The Shores or Schaumburg Supper Club on Lake Emily, and the Fox Lake Golf Club. In the City of Fox Lake,
we also have the legendary Moose Mullin’s Drive-In (75 years plus) along with other fine restaurants.
We all invite you to the best kept secret in Wisconsin.
Sincerely, Dean A. Streich, Town of Fox Lake Chairman

A Welcome from Chamber President Keri Seiler
The Fox Lake Chamber of Commerce enthusiastically welcomes you to our small-town
community.
While you may hear a fish tale or two, Fox Lake has a unique experience to offer all those who find
themselves friends for a day, or for a lifetime.
From the ripple of a wave to the roar of a snowmobile, the lake has many activities for all interests
in all seasons.
Our resorts and lakeside community continually host fishing events, ice races, and guided or rented
boat tours.
If you find that one day just isn’t enough time to enjoy the repose of the lake atmosphere, rent a cabin
on the water and let the crickets serenade you to sleep.
While visiting our lake community, be sure to venture

Parks
Recreation and relaxation are very important to this community, as shown through the
number of parks maintained. The Fox Lake community offers its residents and guests
more parks than many far larger localities.
Adams Spring Park, located on Highway 33 on the south end of the city, features a
memorial to Bunny Berigan, a famous jazz trumpeter from Fox Lake who performed
with some of the best bands of yesteryear.
Clausen Park, located on the north end of the City of Fox Lake, features a 60-foottall Memorial Tower, donated to the city by Leon Clausen in 1955. Public restrooms are
at the base of the tower. Clausen Park is the site of the annual Memorial Day Observances, as well as other activities.
Riverside Park is immediately west of Clausen Park. It
features a large playground,
BBQ grills, and a shelter for
picnickers and other guests. It
also has a public boat launch,
with parking for vehicles, as
well as a handicap-accessible
pier for fishing. It is the location for the Concerts in the
Park series of live music events
during the summer months.
Fireman’s Park offers baseball diamonds, as well as volleyball and basketball courts.
It is located adjacent to the
City of Fox Lake offices, fire department, police department and community center.
Town Park, located between Blackhawk Trail and the northwest corner of the lake,
is in the Town of Fox Lake.
It has a handicap-accessible pier, public access for boating, and a shelter with restrooms.
The Fox Lake Aquatic Park is located just east of the Fox Lake Community Center,
and features pools to keep kids and adults cool on those hot summer days.
The John ‘Red’ Solis Memorial Park is the newest addition on the west end of the
city, and is located on Forest Street in the City of Fox Lake. Colorful playground equipment to challenge and exercise our young people is featured.
Veterans’ Memorial Park is a small park on the corner of College and State streets
in the City of Fox Lake. It was constructed in 2002 to honor all area veterans.
The West Crocker Street Park in the center of the city has a newly built 1/2 basketball court besides playground equipment and a softball area.
Fox Lake Loop Walking Trail
Winter, summer, spring and fall; the Loop Trail has it all!
Spring: Walking briskly on the trail, you may come across iris, daffodils, tulips, crocus,
grape hyacinth and pansies.
Summer: Sitting on a bench or jogging the trail, you may see flowering trees and bushes,
black-eyed Susan, purple cone flowers, marigolds, purple sage, or Queen Anne’s lace.
Fall: Walking your dog, you can see burning bushes along the perimeter or mums.
Winter: Cross-country skiing or sledding, you can find pampas grasses waving in the
breeze.
The bushes, trees and prairie gardens that have been planted around the Loop Walking Trail
are providing us with great splendor. The Beautification Committee volunteers do the maintenance and upkeep of the trail. Thanks for all of the contributions throughout the year.
Any time, any season, enjoy the trail – it is a mile of walking pleasure!

Lake Golf Club
The Fox Lake Golf Club, established in
1922, is a beautiful 18-hole facility located
on the shores of Fox Lake. The course and
clubhouse are able to accommodate all sizes
of group golf outings, receptions, parties
and family reunions.
The golf course is open to the public from
April to November. The dining room is open
from May through September on Monday,
Tuesday, Thursday and Friday evenings. All
types of golf memberships are available.
The Fox Lake Golf Club is located at
N10500 Indian Point Road, Fox Lake.

Fox Lake Property
Owners Golf Outing
On the second Saturday of August the Fox Lake Property Owners Association holds its annual golf outing which is open to the public and is played as
a four-member team scramble.
This golfing extravaganza features great weather, a very “attentive” beverage cart for thirsty golfers, a complimentary lunch served at the turn and the
19th hole “scene” of swapping golf stories, and drawing for many golf prizes
and raffle items.
A date has not been set for the 2013 outing, so please check the website,
www.townoffoxlake.org/flpo/about_us for updates and information on participating in this event.
Aquatic Center
When visiting Fox Lake during the summer, make a point
of checking out the city’s sparkling Aquatic Center. The zerodepth entry – or “beach entry” – is handicap-accessible along
with several bubble jets and a swirling slide to go down. A
large umbrella area is perfect for taking a break and relaxing
in the shade.
They offer swimming lessons for all ages; and, for a workout,
try the water aerobic classes.
For more information, please call the City of Fox Lake at

Fishing / Hunting
Fox Lake is continuing to earn its reputation as one of the
top 10 of fishing lakes in the state of Wisconsin. Abundant fish
include perch, crappies, bluegills, muskie, northern and bass.
Fishing is a year-round sport in Fox Lake, either from boats,
docks or public piers at the Town of Fox Lake Park/Boat Launch
on Blackhawk Trail or the City of Fox Lake, Clausen-Riverside
Park/Boat Launch. Winter ice doesn’t stop us either. Ice fishing is alive and well! The aeration system, installed in 1970,
is still keeping the lake from completely freezing, allowing
for healthy year-round fishing. You may pick up a map of Fox
Lake, courtesy of the Fox Lake Chamber of Commerce, at area
resorts and businesses.
Fox Lake isn’t the only lake, either. Lake Emily is just northwest of Fox Lake and Beaver Dam Lake is just south. Each
have public launches.
Fox Lake Property Owners
Fish Stocking on Fox Lake
To promote the recreational use of Fox Lake for fishing, the Fox Lake Property Owners (FLPO) organization in conjunction
with the DNR continues to commit itself to an extensive yearly fish-stocking program.
In late September 2012 the FLPO released 1,000 perch, 1,076 walleye, 450 northern, and 150 “true” musky. At the DNR’s
recommendation, the number of northern released increased by 150 over the prior year to compensate for the summer kill
caused by drought, hot weather and shallow water.
The cost to the FLPO was $7,200, an approximate $2,500 increase over the 2011 cost. The success of the annual fish-stocking program is made possible by fundraising events, donations and FLPO membership dues.
Mill Creek
and the Mill Creek Dam
Mill Creek is a canoeing and kayaking dream. You will hear nature’s
sounds and observe some of the most interesting wildlife imaginable.
Of course, slow pontoon rides have become quite popular, too. Whatever your pleasure, this spot will be a relaxing place for a picnic and
an amazing area for children to discover and enjoy.
The Mill Creek Dam is also a favorite spot for fishing throughout the
entire spring and summer. Located at the end of Mill Street, this dam
controls water flow from Fox Lake to neighboring Beaver Dam Lake.
The Mill Creek Restoration project provides a handicap fishing and
picnicking area with a handicap-accessible table by Riverside Park.
For more information regarding the Mill Creek Restoration project,
call the Fox Lake City Hall at (920) 928-2280.
Hunting in the Fox Lake Area
Each fall, deer hunters gather in and around Fox Lake, Dodge
County, to take home that special trophy. Many public hunting areas
are available. For more information, contact the Horicon DNR at

Nine years ago, the Fox Lake Chamber decided to bring
back their Annual Ice Fisheree. Since then, the fisheree has
averaged anywhere from 50 to 125 ice fishermen. Hosted at
the Boat House Pub & Eatery by Vicki Matheys, the 2013
event will be held on Saturday, February 2. Starting at 6:00
a.m., ice fishermen have a great chance for the early morning
walleye. And with the fishing ending at 3:00 p.m., there’s a
full day for catching northern or the many pan fish available
in Fox Lake. With a chance to win prizes for the largest fish
in any of the legal categories, the Fox Lake Chamber has seen
many trophy fish reminding them every year what Fox Lake
has to offer our winter fishermen.
Not into winter sports? This event is not just for ice fishermen. All afternoon, those who prefer the indoors have a chance
to participate in the silent auction and the many raffles put
on by the Chamber.
All award-winning fish entries are announced and prizes
are awarded at 4:00 p.m., along with an invite to stay into the
evening to enjoy some musical entertainment.

Events
Friends of the Lake Outing
The Fox Lake Property Owners Association has invited people with special
needs to be their guests for pontoon boat excursions on Fox Lake. Snacks and
beverages are provided “on board.” After several hours of fishing or simply
touring the lake, the guests return to Town Park for a cookout lunch.
This popular event, held for 21 years, takes many volunteers with pontoon
boats, plus cooks and servers. It is traditionally held on the last Saturday in
June. Please call Louie Leizinger at (920) 928-2567 for further information.
4th of July Celebration Features Free Concert and Fireworks
Sponsored by the Fox Lake Chamber of Commerce – Saturday, July 6
A Fox Lake Chamber of Commerce FREE Concert in the Park kicks off the evening at Riverside Park with music. The start
time will be announced as plans are set. Food and refreshments will be served. Bring your family and friends, a lawn chair or
a blanket. Come by car or boat. One of the area’s best fireworks displays begins at dusk. Watching the fireworks on the lake
gives the viewer a “double-whammie” as the fireworks reflect on the water. Riverside Park and the public boat launch area at
the Riverside Park offer excellent viewing. The west and north shores of the lake also offer great viewing opportunities. Many
people board boats and go out to the “small” lake to watch the show. When the fireworks come to an end, stick around and
watch the “parade” on the lake as all the lighted boats head for home. Alternate rain date for fireworks is July 7.
Concerts in the Park
The summer months in Fox Lake also mean Saturday night concerts presented by the Fox Lake
Chamber of Commerce. The 2013 concert series
will host one FREE concert in Riverside Park in
the City of Fox Lake on Saturday evening July 6,
specific time to be announced. Go north off State
Street on N. College Avenue toward the golf club
– left side shelter/park area, or come by boat on
Mill Creek.
Another FREE concert will be held in the Town
of Fox Lake Shelter on Saturday evening, August
24. Take Blackhawk Drive off Highway A, the
shelter is on the south side, or come by boat on
Fox Lake.
Food and beverages will be available. Bring
your family and friends, a lawn chair or a blanket
and get ready to enjoy the night’s FREE concert.
Contact (920) 928-3777 for more information.

Two Lakes Chapter Of Ducks Unlimited Supports Conservation
Ducks Unlimited (DU), the original “unlimited,” is a conservation organization dedicated to conserving wetlands and associated habitat for the benefit of waterfowl with subsequent benefits to other wildlife and people. Over 900 species of birds,
fish, amphibians and mammals benefit from these efforts.
DU was founded in 1937 by sportsmen who recognized that conserving wetlands helps to ensure the future of waterfowl
populations. Today, DU is strongly supported by both hunters and non-hunters who recognized the many benefits associated
with the habitat conservation program.
These traditions have been carried on locally by the Two Lakes Chapter of Ducks Unlimited since 1985. To support this
effort, Two Lakes DU has two fundraising activities each year. The first is a Mardi Gras dinner party, held during the Mardi
Gras season; a fun time during the winter. This year’s Mardi Gras Party will be held on Monday, February 11, 2013 at
Schaumburg Supper Club. Doors open at 5:30 p.m.; dinner is at 7:00 p.m. Tickets are $25 per person.
The second event is held in the summer. This year’s Annual (28th) Event will be held at Schaumburg Supper Club (date to
be determined – June or July).
The public is invited to both events. It is not necessary to be a Ducks Unlimited member to attend. For additional information on either of these events, call Ron at (920) 928-2482 or Dave at (920) 928-3348.

Post is always trying to raise monies to help with this worthy cause.
The Post has a bar which is open to the public as well as veterans,
and a hall available for use at a nominal charge. This hall is provided
free of charge to non-profit groups and returning active duty military
personnel.
We invite you to come see our in-the-works remodeling projects

History
Fox Lake History
Fox Lake was first settled by the “white man” in 1838 when Mr. Jacob P. Brower, accompanied by his father and two sons,
settled on a homestead claim on the north shore of Fox Lake. Other members of the family soon joined him and they became
the first family to settle in Dodge County. In November of 1838, Mr. Brower gave up his north shore claim and entered a claim
on the south shore within the limits of the present city and on Mill Creek.
The name of the city changed three times: in 1839 it was called Frankfort and in 1840 it was changed to Waushara. Waushara
was the name for sixteen years when it was changed to Fox Lake. On April 7, 1846 the town government was organized with
Dr. Stoddard Judd elected as the first chairman. The first village plat was made in 1849.
By 1860, the population had reached a combined total for the village and township of 2,643 of whom nearly 2,000 were
residents of the village. Small industries such as wagon shops, blacksmiths, carpenter shops, banks, barber shops, grocery
stores, millinery shops, meat markets, ice houses, furniture stores, hardware stores, saloons and churches dotted the landscape
of Fox Lake. Schools were important including the first Wisconsin school for women called the Wisconsin Female Academy,
later to be known as Downer College.
Fox Lake also played an important part in the Civil War, sending three full companies of infantrymen to famous duty, including the “Iron Brigade” and the “Eagle Regiment.” Fox Lake also made a significant contribution to Berdan’s Sharpshooters
– sending ten local men to fight in this way for the Union. Other individual contributions also occurred, and Fox Lake men
fought from 1st Bull Run to Appomattox.
In 1909, the Fox Lake Public Library was started and through the years many important Wisconsin figures and events have
emerged out of Fox Lake.
Riverside Memorial Cemetery, the immediate area’s most prominent cemetery, contains the remains of numerous military
veterans, from the Civil War to the present. It is also the final resting place of William Shore, who it is said, was the rejected
lover of Florence Nightingale.
Harriet R. O’Connell Historical Room
The Harriet R. O’Connell Historical Room was established to preserve historical material relating to the City of Fox Lake
and the surrounding area and to honor the memory of Harriet R. O’Connell, who devoted much of her time and energy to the
preservation of existing material. The Fox Lake Public Library houses the room in the lower level of the library.
The room is a huge collection of Fox Lake history and it has been cited by members of the Wisconsin State Historical Society
as the “largest collection of small-town history in the state.”
From the very beginning of Fox Lake, someone has saved our history. The very first land office registration book for the
whole region has been saved and is now preserved for all time by a grant from the Fox Lake Chamber of Commerce. In a lot
of cases, the various non-profit groups in Fox Lake, as well as other communities, have helped in whatever way possible to
save the materials in the room for the future. At the present time, there is an army of retired persons who are indexing the tax
records, scrapbooks and newspapers dating back to the mid-1800s.
With past funding from a private source, cataloging the room resources has made great strides. There are thousands of entries
leading researchers back to information about the people, places and events of Fox Lake.
Due to the huge project of putting the room in order, it is not possible for the library staff to do personal research for people.
For further information, patrons can contact the library at (920) 928-3223.
Come see us at the Fox Lake Historical Society
The Fox Lake Historical Society invites you to visit our museum the summer of 2013. We have new displays for all to enjoy,
and some of the old favorites for the whole family.
New to the society for 2013 are the Sinclair Gas Station and the First Congregational United Church Building. Both will be
in the process of restoration and reconfiguration over the summer, so that they can be enjoyed by the community.
Our engine shed still houses the 1940’s Fairmont gas engine powered track car used for checking and repairing tracks as
well as other antique equipment used by the railroad, local farmers and merchants to do the work required every day for the
better of the community. The working blacksmith shop will continue to turn out the metal fabrications required to keep horses
and equipment fit for service. The summer kitchen is also welcoming you to come in and see how the mothers of the past
provided for their families.
Displays include railroad artifacts and tools, Native American arrowheads, tools and weapons, a model of Fox Lake’s famous
loop, local business artifacts, and military uniforms and equipment. Many photos of all stages of Fox Lake’s history are also
on display for all to see what our past looked like.
The museum is open on the first and third Sundays each month from June to the first weekend in October. Museum hours
are from 1 to 4 p.m. We look forward to seeing you this summer!
