City Review
One thing us City Dwellers
enjoy most about our
choice of residency is
having an array of bars
and restaurants on our
doorsteps to frequent
whenever we like, and for
me nothing beats an after
work drink and bite to eat
with my friends.
On hearing that Toast Bar (a past
Friday night haunt of mine) had
come under new management,
and has launched a sparkling
new menu, I couldn’t wait to take
an old pal along to check it out.
Toast (situated minutes from
the train station on Wellington
Street) has always been a
popular bar for a post work
beverage, and it attracts regular
custom from a mix of people,
including the office suits to the
day off casuals. For me I have
always found that Toast has a
relaxed and welcoming, with a
splash of cosmopolitan, feel to it,
and I’ve always left having made
a new mate or two.
On the Wednesday evening my
friend and I visited we had the
intention of a good old catch
up over fine food and drink,
and lucky for us there just so
happened to be 241 cocktails.
Our bar man and waiter for
the night knew both the drinks
and food menus inside out, and
was on point with his cocktail
recommendations, for me

City Dweller and socialite, Rachel Flynn checks out Toast Bar to ignite old

it was the fresh Elderflower
and Cucumber Fizz, and my
friend the delicately flavoured
Strawberry Margarita.
The Toast food menu has special
offers galore from the 241
Monday Meal Deal, the Tuesday
Steak Nights, to the Football
food and a pint, however what
we were in the mood for was
mixing it up a little and trying
out a few different options, and
perfect for such occasions are
the cold platters to share. We
had our platter of 4 options
for £6.00 to start, which came
with homemade chutney, salad
garnish and fresh bread as
standard, and had 12 delicacies
from which to choose, we opted
for Cajun Chicken, Marinated
Mozzarella Balls, hummus, and
Oven Roasted Vine Tomatoes
(I have kept the Ham Hock
Terrine in mind for my next visit).
Sharing boards are always a
favourite of mine and Toast’s
offering reassured why, the
presentation was faultless and
the combined flavours of our
choices complemented each
other effortlessly, the platters are
also spot on for a quick nibble or
bar snack.
For mains my friend and I
decided to go for a bit of a
carnivores spread with me eager
to try the stone baked Meat
Feast Pizza, and my companion
as equally intrigued by The
Classic Burger. I don’t know
about you but when I see stoned
baked on the menu I expect an
authentic pizza that could give
the Italians a run for their money,
well Toast needn’t fear, the
floppy base with a crispy edge,
and the mozzarella covered
pepperoni, salami and chicken,
was just to my liking, and clearly
my friends as she wasn’t shy on
nicking a slice or two.
The locally sourced 100% beef
burger was served in a Brioche
Bun with smoked bacon,
cheddar cheese, tomato, pickles
and homemade relish, and was
accompanied by seasoned handcut chips, homemade coleslaw,
a mixed leafy salad and a rather
large onion ring. The burger was
of very generous proportions
and therefor was extremely
filling, but in true Man vs Food
fashion my mate (with a little
help from me) was not to be
beaten. Although it was all about
the meat, for us on our visit
Toast also have a decent range
of veggie dishes including the
somewhat appealing Carrot and
Halloumi Burger.
Having swiftly cleared our
cocktails off with our starters we
next decided to go for a crisp,
and very affordable, bottle of
Pinot Grigio with the rest of our
meal, being typical girls white
wine tends to be our drink of
choice however Toast also has
a great selection of beers and
spirits to suit all preferences.
As mentioned earlier Toast
seems to be a regular social
hotspot so I wasn’t surprised
that whilst we were there we
bumped into a couple of other
friends who, after we’d eaten,
we polished off a couple more
cocktails with in the large,
heated outdoor area.
With realisation that it was
only Wednesday it was time to
call it a night on our trip down
memory lane to Toast, but
fortunately with the perks of city
living there wasn’t far to stagger
home.
From this memorable, midweek
visit to Toast I came away feeling
as though I had a great night
filled with high quality food and
drink, impeccable service, and
a copious amount of company
induced belly laughs.
Toast is definitely back on
list of locals for me, catch
me there soon no doubt!

NAPOLEONSCASINOLEEDS
Our great city of Leeds
has had its fair share of
Casinos come and go or
change brands and owners
over the years but none
have stood the test of
time quite like Napoleons
Casino and Restaurant
Leeds, who over the past
twenty nine years have set
the bar high.
I recently checked out their
new Lite Bite menu in an
attempt to discover their
secret. Having been to
Napoleons a few times over
the years, I jumped at the
chance for a Wednesday
night dinner date with my
girlfriend.
On arrival we were greeted
by smiling front desk staff
who ask your name, if you are
a member and sign you up if
not - just the basic details.
After a minute or two, one
of the managers whisked us
away to the bar area. For
a Wednesday night, it was
surprisingly busy. This may
have something to do with
the laid back atmosphere,
well dressed and pleasant
clientele or the fact that the
cheapest pint is £1.50. I was
shocked that such a great
entertainment venue could
offer such value on drinks.
It rivals any pub in the land
and I know which one I would
prefer to be in.
Pleasantly decorated with
marble bar tops and a perfect
lighting level, I instantly felt
comfortable after a long day
at work as I enjoyed my first
glass of Prosecco.
Chatting away with the team,
I was able to a keep abreast
of the latest football scores
on Sky Sports.
I am a family man, I love my
family and whilst I was at
Napoleons I felt like part of
theirs for a few hours. It’s
easy to see why customers
keep on coming back after
nearly 30 years.
Before I drank too much
Prosecco, we were given the
Lite Bite menu which I can
assure you that this is not the
usual sandwich and chips you
would expect to find on bar
menus at other eateries.
The Lite Bites are served
from 5pm until 2.45am
Sunday to Thursday and
3:30pm until 3:45am Friday
and Saturday. We were spoilt
for choice, all the dishes
sounded amazing from
curry to gourmet burgers.
We couldn’t decide what
to have so one of the other
managers, Amanda, gave us
the option to have a bit of
everything. So we did.
I have never had so much
tasty food put in front of
me, it was a food lovers
heaven. Everything tasted
so fresh and was beautifully
presented and after
munching our way through
the whole menu we were full
to the brim.
The value for money was
literally astounding; nowhere
else would you be able to
eat this kind of quality food
for this price. I would 100%
recommend the BBQ rib the sauce would rival any
stateside rib restaurant.
The restaurant staff were
really helpful, happy and
delivered great service.
We headed into the casino
to have a flutter. I taught my
girlfriend Lauren how to play
Blackjack and Roulette. This,
however, was in vain as all the
croupiers at Napoleons were
really helpful in refreshing the
rules of the games to us and
all the customers.

I can speak for both of us
when I say we felt at home
all evening and after a long
day, it was the ideal way to
wind down.
Before we knew it, four
hours had passed and what
had began as a few drinks
and a Lite Bite had turned
into a memorable evening!
Besides the great tasting
food, fantastic customer
service, reasonably
priced drinks and warm
atmosphere I think their
greatest attributes are team
spirit, customer service
plus the positivity that runs
through the place.
It was clear to see that
all the staff had a passion
for their job - from the
restaurant staff, croupiers
and managers - everybody
wants to be there and that
really shows. You don’t

Yorkshire, I truly felt like my
custom mattered and I felt
taken care of by all.

LEEDS MARKET
REDEVELOPMENT PROJECT
Leeds Kirkgate Market
was built in the 1850s at
a cost of £14,000. Since
that time, the market has
grown and prospered.
Inevitably, there comes a
time when refurbishment
work is necessary to
ensure the continued
success of the market
and Leeds City Council has
committed £12.3m to this
redevelopment project.
The redevelopment will allow
Kirkgate Market to prosper
for many years to come. The
improvements to the structure
of the building will create a
better quality environment to
trade in, visit and shop. With
millions of visitors expected
when Victoria Gate opens, the
market will be able to make
the most of increased footfall
in the area. A major element of
8 | City Dweller Magazine
the refurbishment plans will see
a vibrant, new, fresh food area
created by moving the butchers
from their current location to
join traders on fish and game
row.
As well as this new fully
integrated fresh produce area,
a new ‘heart’ of the market will
be created which will contain
a central events space and
a covered daily market. The
programming of this area is
currently underway and is set
to bring themed events and
markets such as Victorian,
French, Moroccan and many
more.
Let’s not forget however
that the market is still
vibrant and buzzing.
With an impressive and eclectic
range of shops, cafes and food
stalls, the market offers the
perfect shopping destination.
Where else can you buy world
foods and fantastic quality fruit,
vegetables, fish and meat in the
heart of the city?
Restoring the past and
creating the future resonates
throughout the whole ethos
of the refurbishment of the
market. There have been plenty
of changes in the way you can
shop. A successful ‘click and
collect’ pilot will be rolled out
in the future. You can also use
the ‘Shop and Drop’ facility
where you can leave your
shopping for collection later
in the day, and why not take
advantage of online shopping?
Marketdelivered.co.uk means
you can have the quality
and freshness of the market
delivered straight to your home
or office.
Leeds Kirkgate market is iconic,
impressive and the jewel in the
new Victoria Gate quarter. It
has something for everyone
and if you haven’t been for a
while take a trip. Soak up the
atmosphere, find yourself a
bargain and tickle your taste
buds with the delights of the
best world foods right here on

AZUCAR
It’s hard to believe that
Azucar will be celebrating
seven years in business
as 2015 comes to a close
- it doesn’t seem like two
minutes since they first
launched their unique take
on tapas and rum.
Now firmly established as part
of the Brewery Wharf wallpaper,
I was keen to return and find out
if they still had the Midas touch
that put them so firmly on the
Leeds map.
I dropped in on a busy Saturday
night with a friend, absolutely
famished and more than keen
for some top-notch food and
drink. It was reassuring to see
Azucar has maintained its warm,
friendly, rustic charm that set it
apart from the competition in
the first place.
From the welcoming staff to the
shabby chic interior and candlelit tables, this is an establishment
that lives and breathes the
laidback vibe that you only get
when Howard Marks has had
creative input.
Rum and tequila galore
One thing I’ve always loved
about this joint is their selection
of booze - if Jim Morrison and
Amy Winehouse were alive,

well and living in Leeds, then
I’m almost certain they’d be
propped up at this bar from
dusk until dawn.
As well as a vast range of
fine rums and tequilas, they
also stock a cracking range of
bottled beers and wines. We
kicked things off with a bottle of
Modelo as we perused the menu.
Although it has shrunk
considerably, the latest menu
is all the better for it and has
retained all the best dishes and
added some new gems into the
mix too. We carefully selected
seven dishes to share, which I
might add is more than enough
as each portion seems geared
towards two people.
San Miguel battered
The King Prawns in paprika and
San Miguel batter (6.50) came
with a tasty lime mayo and really
hit the mark. San Miguel is my
least favourite beer (tastes like
someone dropped two pence in
your pint), but blended into this
dish it worked a treat.
Another new dish which proved
to be something of a highlight
had to be the Pork Ribs slow
roasted in honey and paprika,
which fell of the bone and
melted in the mouth.
The pork went really well with
our chosen bottle of red; Rio
Rosa Malbec (17.95), which came
from the ever reliable Chile. With
its smooth texture and fruity
flavours, it went down faster
than Madonna at the Brits–
definitely one you’d pick up for
guests at a dinner party or BBQ,
It was a real winner.
As a bit of a foodie and selfconfessed glutton, I eat a lot of
food and try new places all the
time, but it’s rare I eat something
which offers a completely new
taste experience. The Diced
Lamb (5.95), which came in
a sweet and spicy Caribbean
sauce did that however; it was
quite simply delicious.
A couple of Zombies
The Butterfly Chicken in Peri Peri
(5.95) sauce is an old favourite
I’ve had many times at Azucar
and it didn’t disappoint, with
a soft texture as though it had
been slow-cooked.
The last part of the evening is
something of a blur, which I put
down to the fact we decided to
round off the meal with some
Zombie Rum Cocktails. A heady
mixture of Bacardi Oakheart,
Bacardi Eight Years, Gosling’s,
Pusser’s Navy Rum, pineapple
and passion fruit juice, this super
strong drink was invented in
1930’s Hollywood (possibly by
a Satanist) and is topped with a
flamed Wray & Nephew.
Needless to say, it was amazing;
just don’t drink it if you’re a onepint wonder unless you want to
be carried home. So, the final
verdict? If you’re looking for
somewhere that puts as much
love and attention into its bar as
its food, then Azucar is the place
to be.

BLACK SHEEP
BREWERY
DAYS OUT FEATURES
City Dweller Magazine have
teamed up with the guys
at Welcome to Yorkshire
to look at some Yorkshire
days out. Here’s one of
their suggestions with all
the makings for a great day
out.
Ewe’ll love this great day out
in Yorkshire!
In 1992 Paul Theakston had
a dream that a brewery with
traditional values and rescued
equipment could compete
with the big companies and
their mass produced beer.
Over 20 years since the
founding of Black Sheep
Brewery, it is clear that the
dream became a reality and
a visit to hear all about the
tumultuous journey makes for
an amazing day out.
Taking a “shepherded” tour
of the brewery is a must and
here you will see the process
of brewing in full swing.
Beer will be bubbling in the
fermenting rooms that still
include Yorkshire Square
Fermenting Vessels which
were developed over 200
years ago and you will learn
all about how Black Sheep
brews its award-winning
beers; from the selection of
ingredients to the science
behind the process.
Make sure to visit the shop
before you leave to pick up
your Black Sheep branded
gifts and a case of your
favourite beer.
Of course no tour would be
complete without trying a few
samples, however if drinking
on an empty stomach is not
for you then grab something
to eat first in the aptly named
Bistro & Baa…r.
As expected the menu
resonates Yorkshire and
includes a Yorkshire Beef and
Riggwelter Ale pie which is
good and hearty.
The Black Sheep Brewery
offers a great experience and
it is no surprise that visitors
keep flocking back.

LEEDS RHINOS
RUN LEEDS’ 10K WITH JAMIE PEACOCK
With eight Super Leagues
trophies, two World Club
Challenge Cups and one
Man of Steel Award to his
name, Jamie Peacock MBE
is one of the most coveted
players in Rugby League
history. As he moves onto
his testimonial year with
the club, Jamie is urging
fans to take part in the
ASDA Foundation Leeds
10K to raise funds for the
Jane Tomlinson Appeal and
Leeds Rhinos Foundation.
For the last six years, the Leeds
Rhinos have invited supporters to
challenge themselves and have fun
by taking on the popular course.
This year, Jamie will be walking the
event with his family, taking in the
unique atmosphere and cheering
on the ‘Run/ Walk with the Rhinos’
team.
Jamie spoke to Leeds City Dweller
and said “I would urge as many
people as possible to sign up
and join me on the 12th July to
run or walk the Jane Tomlinson
Leeds 10k. In doing so you will be
benefitting two great charities, the
Leeds Rhinos Foundation and the
Jane Tomlinson appeal. In my final
season playing for the Rhinos it will
be great to be part of the Run with
the Rhinos team and to meet many
supporters who have cheered
me and my team mates on over
the years. Jane Tomlinson was a
truly inspirational woman and I
am delighted to be a part of this
massive event for the city.’
LEEDS

INSIDER
As well as the opportunity to take
part with Jamie, a number of other
familiar faces will be racing in 2015
including Barrie Mcdermott, CEO
Gary Hetherington and our own
Ronnie the Rhino!

Starting on the Headrow and

of spectator support and always a
buzzy atmosphere. This year, our
talented Spencer Properties Dance
team will be cheering on Team
Rhinos from two cheer stationswatch out for a couple of surprises
along the way.
We’re entering the final month
of what has been a typically
up and down season at Leeds

fortunes since the start of 2015,
however, has been great to see
and a real testament to the hard
work of the players, coaches
and those behind the scenes at
the club.
are the latest to make the step
up in joining fellow Thorp Arch
graduates Sam Byram and
Alex Mowatt as established
parts of the team. All four will
undoubtedly be chasing the top
honours at next month’s End of
Season Awards Dinner, although
it won’t be an easy decision when
the supporters cast their votes.
‘The Leeds 10K always seems a fun
and busy event and one I’ve always
fancied doing.’ Jamie Peacock
mentions, ‘a fair few staff at the
club take part every year and it can
get a bit competitive! With training
and the season ahead being my
priority- I’m choosing to walk it this
time so me, my wife and son Lewis
can do it together and take in the
sights on the day.’
The game against Nottingham
Forest on March 14 drew an
attendance of 30,722 – the
highest home crowd of the
season so far and the biggest
at Elland Road for just over
13 months. The 0-0 draw was
hardly one to remember, but
the whole sense of occasion
and atmosphere on the day just
demonstrated the good feeling
surrounding the club at the
minute.
The ‘Player of the Year’ Dinner
takes place in the Centenary
Pavilion on Saturday May 2nd.
All sponsorship raised by the Run/
Walk with the Rhinos team will
be split between Jane Tomlinson
Appeal and the Leeds Rhinos
Foundation. The Leeds Rhinos
Foundation too are celebrating
their ten year anniversary and
Jane’s Appeal has raised £7.6
million and fulfilled Jane’s ambition
to fund a new research project.

Good luck Jamie!
Hard work is a key factor, but it’s
no coincidence that the return
to form this year has included
eye-catching victories over
the likes of Bournemouth and
Middlesbrough – two promotionchasing teams regarded among
the best in the division. Ask any
fan on a match-day at Elland
Road and they will tell you
there is a wealth of talent within
this current Leeds squad to
complement that much-needed
hard work.
The club’s Academy has a rich
history of producing talented
youngsters ready for first-team
football at Leeds, and this
season has been no different.

JOHN LANE’S
FITNESS
TIPS
HOT IN LEEDS!
This Months
I’m John Lane, Great Britain
Athlete and British Record
Holder.
In each issue of City Dweller
Magazine I share health and
training tips to help you with
training and get the best out
of your health and fitness.
Here’s this months training and
fitness tips.
Add gradient to the treadmill
Running on a treadmill isn’t the
same as running in the park or
on the road. Although if you find
yourself running on one, add a
slight gradient to your treadmill.
Even a 2-3% gradient is enough
to force your body to work harder
and get you closer to replicating
running in the park..
Importance of footwear:
No matter what type of training
you do, its important to wear the
correct footwear. Everybody’s

Split up sessions
Breakfast - the most important
meal of the day
It’s important to split up sessions
in order to let your body adapt
and recover. Try and stay away
from doing the same exercises
two days in a row in the gym or
running the same sessions back
to back on the track. Split your
weights sessions from upper body
to lower body on a daily basis
to ensure the body makes the
necessary gains.
Relieve those aching muscles
After a hard session, there are
times that you will be sore and
stiff as a result of training. An easy
way to relieve your body of this
is to run a bath with cold water
and sit in for 10-15 minutes. You
can also throw in some ice cubes
if you want it colder. This process
is commonly known as “ice bath
therapy” and is used by athletes

Sporting Stars
Leeds is a sporting city, blessed with fantastic teams in
Rugby, Football, Cricket and more! The last month has been
a fantastic month for sport with two young boxers gearing
up for big fights, Leeds United on great form and huge news
about Kevin Sinfield. Here are our picks of the sporting stars
that are hot at the moment!
Neil Redfearn
On November 1st, Redfearn was
confirmed as head coach of Leeds
United. Since then, the form has
picked up and the football has
improved massively. Leeds have
only lost six league games in his
first five months in charge!
Josh Warrington
It was only a year ago when
Josh Warrington was a virtually
unknown young boxer. Now
he’s selling out the First Direct
Arena and fighting in World
Title Eliminators! It’s been a
whirlwind year for him and with
his potential, he can still achieve
more.
Adam Lyth
The 27 year old Yorkshire-born
opening batsman made his debut
for Yorkshire CCC eight years
ago and he is finally getting the
recognition he deserves. Ahead
of the new season, Lyth has been
called up to the England squad
and he may even open the batting
in an Ashes series.
Kevin Sinfield
The Leeds legend announced he
will leave Rhinos at the end of
the season to make the dramatic
switch to Yorkshire Carnegie to
play Rugby Union. As arguably
the greatest Rugby League
captain ever, can he lead Carnegie
to glory?
Nicola Adams
Olympic Gold medallist Nicola
Adams is gearing up to box in
England again next month! The
Leeds born amateur boxer will
compete in the England Boxing
Championships in April.

City Dweller fitness enthusiast,

Mountain Biking
An activity that is achievable for
most people - providing you don’t
stray too far from the path. The
best place to start is at the visitor
centre where you can pick up a
detailed map and choose from any
number of interesting routes with
varying lengths, from a quick 0.4
mile lake walk to a lengthy 4.5 hilly
jaunt, depending upon what you
hope to do.
The mountain bike trails at Dalby
are well renowned and attract
the type of cyclist who are often
seen around the forest entrance
lycra-clad, tinkering with bikes and
strapping on various bits of gear.
They will be getting prepped for
the tougher black or longer red 21
mile trail, each demanding either
high levels of stamina or technical
ability through steep drops, narrow
sections and rough terrain.
If you fall into neither one of these
camps, do not despair, there is
another option to hire a bike,
power assisted or otherwise at the
Dalby Bike Barn for around £15.
The experienced cyclists here
will be happy to talk you through
a further two trails of easy to
moderate ability, which start from
the visitor centre and skip the logs
and severe descents – the lycra is
optional.
Out of the two, the blue
(moderate) is the one to go for.
| City Dweller Magazine
Dalby Forest is a place where
flying is common, cycling
mandatory and cruising upright
on two wheels is just another way
to get from A-to-B. All of these
experiences are achievable over
the course of a day, so why not
challenge yourself and conquer
all three? Then make use of the
picturesque area and stop for a
coffee at one of the surrounding
villages to complete the entire
Dalby adventure.

One of the more popular routes
to take is the Bridestones. A walk
that covers a moderate 1.5 miles,

in places and reveals naturally
odd-shaped sculptured rocks
dotted around the highest peaks.
These are the aforementioned

In total there are 36 miles of
hiking and biking trails to explore
plus plenty of gravity-defying
activities, where visitors can
swing themselves Tarzan-like from
treetops among other things. If
you have yet to discover Dalby,
here is a closer look at the top
three experiences you can have
in possibly the most fun forest in
Yorkshire.
In a bid to liven things up on
a particularly dreary weekend
morning you could do no better
than to launch yourself from a 35
meter tall platform and plummet
to the ground on a wind-in-yourface zip-wire. Well this is the vision
of Go- Ape, an award winning
obstacle course filled to the rafters
with high-ropes, crossing tunnels,
bridges and of course zip-wires.
This 2 hour trail begins with a
gradual climb on a wider gravelled
pathway, which is lighter on the
legs and boasts some of the best
views. Meanwhile, the slope down
is an excellent opportunity to
loosen the brakes and whoosh
past trees and if you’re lucky a
startled deer before making your
way back to base, a little more
flushed and lot more energized.

PRYZM TITLE FIGHT SPECTACULAR
On Sunday 29th March, Pryzm Superclub hosted a fantastic afternoon of
championship boxing! Promoted by ex-professional Lee Murtagh, the star
of the show was heavyweight Graham Mattison who won the EBF Northern
Area Heavyweight title in a thrilling fight!
After being knocked down by a left hook only ten seconds into the opening
round, Mattison was on the back-foot. His opponent Richard Leak continued
to put pressure on him and Mattison had to dig deep to hang on early in the
fight and survive the first round.
Mattison then turned the fight on its head and went on the attack in the
second round. After landing a series of heavy blows, the referee stopped the
fight to give Mattison a knock-out victory. It was an enthralling, exciting and
wild fight that undoubtably stole the show.
Mattison later said about the fight: “When I was sat on the floor, I realised I’d
promised that my daughter would take the belt to school! I found something
in my self to get up and win.”
It was a fantastic event at Pryzm and it was enjoyed by everyone in
attendance! You can check out Graham’s boxing club Bethlehem Boxing at

THE SECRET OF
HEADINGLEY
City Dweller & seasoned property
expert, Andrew Baxter, presents
his monthly column.
It has been a growing trend
in recent times that more
students in Leeds are moving
closer to the city centre and
away from Headingley. Let’s
not tar every student with the
same brush, but it’s mainly
those who want to fall out of
bed into their lectures. But
apart from being 10-15 minutes
closer…is it really worth the
hype?
With Leeds rapidly becoming
one of the leading cities of
the North it’s easy to see why
more students are choosing to
study here. With a number of
new developments around the
city centre including the new
luxurious student apartments
IconInc, students are faced with
a difficult choice when it comes
to finding a house. We take a
look at some of the reasons
why Headingley is still the place
to be when it comes to living in
Leeds.
Express or Eccopizza, not
forgetting the award-winning,
family run Salvos and Jino’s
Thai.
There’s a need for people to be
‘trendy’ now a days and I find
these good old fashioned hot
spots are timely classics. To top
it off, this month has also seen
the opening of a new cereal
bar ‘Moo’d’, which is among
the first in the UK outside of
London, giving you a little taste
of Brick Lane in Headingley.
One of the main attractions of
Headingley is the location, and
that’s not just where you’re
situated in terms of the city
centre, but the overall look
and feel of the area. While
rival student favourite Hyde
Park is situated closer to the
city centre, Headingley has
the great advantage of being
a leafy suburb with attractive
scenery.
With excellent transport links,
you’re never too far from the
train station, with Burley and
Headingley station both short
walks from Headingley centre.
The Otley Run
Take a walk down Otley Road
and you are immediately
spoilt for choice. If you fancy
a good burger or some ribs
you’ve got The Pit or, my
personal favourite, Red True
BBQ. Craving a pizza then take
your pick with The Box, Pizza
Finally, we can’t mention
Headingley without talking
about the famous Otley run.
From Woodies Ale House in
far Headingley, to the Original
Oak, the Otley Run is the most
renowned bar crawl in Leeds
and attracts students from all
over the UK.
Amongst all the bars,
restaurants and shops…it’s
cheaper to rent in Headingley!!
With budgets, bargain hunting
and freebies being such a pull
for students, why wouldn’t you
try save £20 a week on rent?
That’s a night out for some!
Drop by and say hello
to us at Parklane!
Andrew

of world-renowned design
company YOO. YOO formed
in 1999, teaming the founding
partner of Manhattan Loft

Strong design elements
are evident throughout the
Manor Mills development
from the external facades to
the clever floor layouts and
striking interior design. The
apartments are all light and
spacious boasting floor to
ceiling windows throughout.
The communal areas are
undergoing refurbishment to
keep all areas looking sharp
and contemporary.
Eddisons Residential manages
180 of the spacious Manor
Mills apartments that are
spread over nine floors and
located in Holbeck Urban
Village close to the national

Station and key transport links.
This popular location is perfect

GET AHEAD OF THE CURVE WITH MARTIN & CO
As the weather now turns for the better
we traditionally see a big increase in
people moving around the city.
Leeds city centre is an amazing place to live but as
the population in the city increases, married with
the lack of new build schemes available, demand is
certainly competitive. We always suggest you start
doing your homework now if you are thinking about
looking for a new home.
The first point to think about is where in the city
you want to live, maybe along the river at Brewery
Wharf or Leeds Dock or further into the city to the
smaller boutique style developments like Harewood
Street or Vassalli House. Once you have a location
in mind you can start deciding on your needs like
parking, furnishings, and bathrooms and of course
number of bedrooms.
There is a great cross section in style of apartments
within the city and with a little work you can find
your perfect home. Once you have an idea of what
and where we suggest that you either visit or email
us to start a conversation, it is our job to find your
perfect home and that is exactly what we at Martin
& Co excel at. We want to know what makes you
tick.
Get yourself on our mailing list now and
be ahead of the curve in finding that
perfect home with Martin & Co and
Leeds City Dweller Magazine.

CRYPT FACTOR 2015 IS THE BIGGEST EVER
City Homes
with
Jonathan
Morgan
I felt a huge amount
of pride last month
when we hosted The
Crypt Factor, an annual
singing competition that
brings together leading
companies from the
region’s property industry
to raise money for two
great charities.
CITY DWELLER
This year’s event broke every
record in its nine year history
and saw 10 budding singers
and groups swap their day
jobs in property for a night
on the stage, and perform in
front of a huge audience of
approximately 700 people at
Elland Road.
In total, the event raised
more than £64,000 for two
charities- LionHeart and St
George’s Crypt and it’s a
great delight that Morgans
is a headline sponsor and
organiser alongside Bond
Dickinson, Bruntwood and
Town Centre Securities Plc.
LionHeart offers all types
of help and support to
the property industry’s
RICS members and their
families who face problems
that are often completely
unexpected.
St George’s Crypt is a
fantastic local charity based
within the thriving church
of St George’s in Leeds and
has been at the frontline
of support for homeless,
disadvantaged and
vulnerable people in Leeds
and its surrounding areas
since 1930.
“
St George’s Crypt costs
£1.5-million to run each
year and relies heavily on
donations to operate and
offer vital services that
benefit about 200 people
every day.
In total, the event raised
morethan£64,000fortwo
charities - LionHeart and
St Georgeʼs Crypt.
The charity has previously
spent the money we raised
on all types of initiatives
including its hugely
successful ‘Growing Rooms’
programme, which houses
and supports people as
they break alcohol and drug
related addictions.
The money has also gone
towards helping people
to improve their selfconfidence, make positive
decisions and ultimately
move back into society and
gain employment.
You can find out more
about The Crypt Factor

HOT PROPERTY- Leeds
city centre sales market
experiencing huge
demand!
Investors are flocking to
Leeds city centre in search
of buy to let residential
property investment and as a
specialist in the sector, we are
overwhelmed with demand at
present. At UK City Residential
we have currently either
sold subject to contract or
completed sales achieved with
a value of £24 Million in the
north of England within the last
12 months.
The huge demand for
residential money is
undoubtedly influenced by the
strength of the private rented
sector, low yields in the south
by comparison for investors
looking for investment
opportunities and a growing
confidence in residential
property generally.
In Leeds, rents are constantly
increasing due to the lack of
new residential property being
supplied to the city centre
market and although this isn’t
great news to people renting,
for investors, this is providing
an extra level of comfort when
making a choice to invest in the
residential sector.
28 | City Dweller Magazine
We are now working with
a number of developers in
appraising new schemes for
both the rental sector and
to sell in to the open market,
which means investors will
have to start considering
‘off plan’ investments. In the
meantime, we are calling
all potential vendors with
tenanted properties to get in
touch if they are looking to sell
this year.
We are currently selling East
Point, a new conversion
development in the city centre
for a developer which is
guaranteeing investors a net
yield of 6.94% for the first year
and this is proving to be
very popular with investors
and another indication that
developers are proactively
looking to convert office
buildings in the city centre to
residential using permitted
development planning consent.
We would love to hear from
any developers or vendors
looking to sell, so please get
in touch if you are thinking
about selling or developing
residential property in Leeds
city centre!

Hello Everyone,
As we enter Spring our
thoughts turn to renewal
and rebirth. Birds are
nesting and buds are
beginning to burst
through, bringing trees
back to life. The miracle of
nature presents itself for all
to see.
After a year of complete
personal transition, looking
out into my garden, I
am reminded that we
constantly have the
opportunity to reinvent our
own lives. Rebirth can be
ours at any point; in this
precise moment we can
change anything that we
wish to be different.
I know that it isn’t
always easy. Often we
have other people to
consider, responsibilities
and restrictions. Fear of
making the wrong decision
can disable us and we
very rarely recognise the
potential we have.
My work with the universe
has taught me that what
we believe to be true for
us will become our reality.
It is also true that what
we concentrate on feeds
on the energy we give it
and it grows. This is true
whether we concentrate
on good or bad aspects of
our life.
The great gift we have
is that we can shift the
destination of our energy
and ‘grow’ the things that
we really want to flourish.
We can choose to believe
that the route to our
dreams will be fluid and
benefit everyone in the
long run.
Reinvent yourself - if you
can visualise it you can
create it- just focus on the
new you not the problems
that stand in your way.
Why not follow ‘springs’
lead and have your own
rebirth- there’s nothing
that you cannot achieve.
Enjoy life!

Macmillan Cancer Support
is here to help everyone
affected by cancer making
sure no one faces cancer
alone. Every single day in
Leeds 10 people are given
the devastating news they
have cancer and this number
is growing, by 2030 it will
be 20 people every day. We
are here to support everyone
through this, family, friends

Locally, we fund a team of
specialists who are on hand
to provide essential support.
This includes the Macmillan

Vaughn Thomas from SovereignWealth
Private Clients, presents his financial
column in Leeds City Dweller.
Ask Dr Jones
Dear Dr Jones,
Recently my friends
have suggested that
I should go to get
my cholesterol levels
checked, I am a 42
year old male and
feel pretty healthy.
Would you advise
I should? And if so
how often would
you recommend me
doing so?
Dear Dweller,
It’s always a good
idea to get regular
health check
regardless of how
we feel as you do
not always feel
unwell with certain
conditions, for
example high blood
pressure. I would
recommend you see
your GP for a full
check up (you may
be able to see the
nurse if you explain
what you would
like). I would be keen
to get your blood
pressure and routine
bloods done as well
as your cholesterol
level, particularly
if there is a family
history of anything
such as heart trouble
or diabetes. I feel
it would be worth
doing annually.
Dr J
Dear Dr Jones,
I am a bit of a softy
and I have being
thinking about
having a tummy
tuck. I have read
that it’s quite an
invasive procedure
and can be painful.
In all honesty do
the results make
the procedure
worthwhile? I am
in my mid 30’s and
have had 2 children
Dear Dweller,
It depends on what
you are trying to
achieve. You don’t
mention if you are
back to your normal
weight or need to
lose some weight
first before the
tummy tuck can be
done and if you are
generally in good
health otherwise.
You’re right it is a
surgical procedure,
so yes it can be
painful. I would
suggest you come
and see one of our
plastic surgeons to
discuss the pros and
cons and the result
you are looking for.
Dr J
Dear Dr Jones,
A few years ago I
broke my ankle and
I was left with quite
a bit of scar tissue.
The majority of it
is external and on
the outside of my
ankle. What would
you advise to reduce
the amount visible
scarring?
Dear Dweller,
Scarring can be a
problem and can
sometimes depend
on your ethnicity.
You haven’t said if
you have already
tried any treatments
but generally creams
containing vitamin
E are quite useful
as is Bio oil. Certain
procedures used
aesthetically on the
face such as the
Dermal Roller can
help with scarring
and may be worth
looking into.
Dr J
Hi Dr Jones,
I am only 25 years
old and my hands
and feet are always
cold. It has been
suggested to me by
friends that it could
be due to poor
circulation. I am
not a smoker and
I haven’t suffered
from any medical
issues that I think
would affect this.
I also get pins and
needles regularly,
is this something
related or a different
issue?
Dear Dweller,
Poor circulation
can cause cold
peripheries but you
are right smoking is
generally the main
cause of peripheral
vascular disease.
Sometimes changes
in the small blood
vessels can be
an autoimmune
problem so it would
be worth seeing
your GP for a full set
of blood tests to rule
this out.

Vaughn Thomas from Sovereign
Wealth Private Clients looks
at the General Election and its
potential impact on pensions.
As politicians debate the future of
tax relief on pension contributions,
retirement savers might be wise to
take advantage of current rules.
Few would doubt Chancellor
George Osborne’s claim that
the pension reforms due to be
introduced in April represent
“the most radical change to how
people can access their pension
in almost a century”. Yet, before
the changes have even been
implemented, political parties are
warming up for May’s general
election with further proposals
that aim to close the retirement
funding gap and pay for other
campaign promises.
There have been calls from the
pensions industry for a period of
stability to give individuals and
providers time to adjust to April’s
new regime. However, it seems
those pleas could go unheeded as
the political parties stake out their
differences.
The Labour and Liberal
Democrat parties have in their
sights an overhaul of the tax
relief on pension contributions.
Currently, the government tops
up individuals’ contributions
according to the rate of tax
paid – 20% for basic rate, 40%
for higher rate and 45% for
additional rate taxpayers. At the
top end, that means a £10,000
pension contribution could cost
an additional rate taxpayer as little
as £5,500. The result is that 75%
of the £2.4 billion relief given to
individuals goes to higher earners;
however, these are the workers
who pay the most tax (And.com
March 2015).
Labour has pledged to abolish
45% tax relief for additional rate
taxpayers; those who earn more
than £150,000. Instead, these
would qualify for only 20% relief.
The Liberal Democrats propose
to abolish the higher rates of
relief and level the playing field
for all pension savers. They would
provide 50 pence of tax relief at
source for every £1 paid into a
pension, making an effective 33%
flat rate of tax relief for everyone.
Presently, the maximum amount
that people can put in their
pension pot – the lifetime
allowance – is £1.25 million;
anything above is taxed and does
not qualify for tax relief.
Labour says it will cut the lifetime
allowance to £1 million, however,
and plans to reduce further
the annual allowance from
£40,000 to £30,000. The Liberal
Democrats party has said it too
will reduce the lifetime allowance
to £1 million, although the party’s
pensions minister Steve Webb
has suggested there should be
no upper limit at all and that the
lifetime allowance should simply
disappear.
It is clear that a reduction in
higher rate tax relief would
increase the cost of a pension
contribution for some savers – and
these individuals would receive
greater tax benefits if they made
contributions now rather than in
the future. Individuals with the
required level of earnings who
make use of unused allowances
from this and previous years could
contribute more than £40,000
before the tax year-end – and take
advantage of current rules while
they remain in place.
In some cases it will be possible
to contribute considerably
larger sums: someone who uses
allowances for this year, the
previous three years and next year
before 6 April could pay in up to
£230,000 – if they have earned
income to support this level of
contribution in this tax year. Even
if that size of contribution is out of
reach, there are good reasons to
pay a single contribution before
the new tax year begins, when
the ability to exploit any unused
2011/12 allowance will fall away.
The levels and bases of taxation
and reliefs from taxation can
change at any time. The value
of any tax relief depends on
individual circumstances.

Vaughn!

BREAKFAST
Kam and I are helping
singletons in Leeds find
love!
For months now we’ve been
hearing stories from a lady we
call our Disastrous Anonymous
Dater. She’s been on a string
of disastrous dates, that have
ended in having to break into her
own house through the kitchen
window, being told she’d broken
all the rules at salsa class, and
being licked on the ear.
So we decided we’d help
Anonymous find a date. We’ve
had loads of interest, and finally
set her up on a date with Declan.
And while we were doing that,
we had loads more calls from
single guys and girls wanting us
to set THEM up on dates.
So Kam and Katie’s Dating
Agency was born!
So far on the books we have
Anonymous and Declan, and
Charlotte and Anthony. And
Tom, who’s still searching for his
ideal date. He likes rugby, has his
own car, and looks a little bit like
Steve McDonald from Corrie. If
you’re interested?
Now we’ve just got to figure out
where to send them…
We’ve also been chatting to
Sophie Ellis Bextor, who told us
about everything from being the
face of Dulux paint: “I love doing
interior stuff, I’m a bit obsessed
www.leedscitymagazine.co.uk
with doing up my house”, to
the medical benefits of chewing
gum for kids, to how she loves
getting searched at airports: “I…
quite like it when my bag gets
searched at security in airports. I
just feel like it’s a little bit of sort
of special attention for me and
my things. Yeah, sure, I’ll show
you the clothes I packed, I quite
like them”
“I got a leotard from Strictly
which is covered in Swarovski
crystals and if I take that away
with me it comes up really crazy
on the security little cameras. So
that pretty much guarantees a
search and I quite like the fact
that that’s what it is.”
We love Sophie! So down to
earth, but also so incredibly
showbiz!
And this month sees Olly Murs at

JOHN LEGEND
WEDNESDAY 1ST JULY
FIRST DIRECT ARENA
John Legend has nine
Grammy Awards to his name,
one Golden Globe and one
Oscar. His singles ‘Ordinary
People’ and ‘All of Me’ were
global hits, pushing him
towards superstardom and
he’s recently celebrated his
first UK number one single,
with Sam Smith for Red Nose
Day 2015. To top it all off
- two months ago his song
‘Glory’, from the film Selma,
won an Academy Award for
Best Original Song.
It’d be easy to say John
Legend is just the ‘Flavour
of the Month’ but the truth
is, it’s been a long journey
of constant hard work and
dedication to the music
industry. Legend’s passion for
music was evident through
his education, serving as
a president and musical
director of a young jazz
group as he slowly built
up a small fanbase in Ohio
and after finishing college,
Legend started producing,
writer and recording his own
original music, promoting
himself in places such as New
York, Boston, Atlanta and
Washington DC.
Since then he’s gone from
strength to strength and he’s
now soaring. With several
Grammy’s for his next two
albums, ‘Wake Up!’ and
‘Love in the Future’, signing
the national anthem at
the Opening Ceremony of
Super Bowl XLIX and the
mesmerising chart success
for ‘All of Me’, ‘Glory’ and ‘Lay
Me Down’ Legend is now a
huge name across the globe.
His first album was released
independently in 2000 and
it was only after help from
friend Kanye West that he
was able to secure a record
deal. Born John Stephens, he
was actually given the stage
name ‘John Legend’ by hip
hop artists J. Ivy and Kanye
West!
And capitalising on all that
unbelievable, hard-earned
success, John Legend is
embarking on a worldwide
tour, coming to the UK this
summer to put on a series of
huge concerts.
The 9-time Grammy winner
will be visiting the first direct
arena on July 1st 2015.
In the following years, Legend
collaborated with Will.I.Am,
Michael Jackson and Jay Z
but was still yet to become
a worldwide name. It wasn’t
till he released the Grammy
winning song Ordinary
People that people outside
the music industry started to
take note of him.
By 2008, he was starting to
make waves in America and
singing in a video for Barack
Obama called ‘Yes We Can’
must surely be a personal
highlight for Legend. The
same year, he made his film
debut alongside Samuel L
Jackson in Soul Men.

Hurts, Bombay Bicycle Club, Pulled Apart By Horses, George Ezra, Rudimental and The 1975 grace their
stages!
The festival will this year take place on the bank holiday weekend of 1st-4th May and features a huge
programme of gigs and supporting events.
The big names this year include Carl Barat & The Jackles, Lucy Rose and Lawson. The performances are
over 20 stages in more than a dozen venues around the city as the festival will literally take over the city!

runner up of the Urban, Pop & Acoustic category of Live and Unsigned at the age of 20.
She auditioned for The X Factor in 2012, performing her own composition, ‘Last Night’. She was
the first contestant in the show’s history to score a Top 40 single and album before the live shows
even aired with her independently released album Top Room At The Zoo.
After quitting the X Factor, Lucy released her second album and three singles. Her album charted
at number seven. Her third album is released this April and will be entitled ‘We Are...’
Lucy’s ‘Unsinkable’ UK tour will see her perform in Leeds at the Student Union at Leeds Beckett
University on the 12th May.
S CLUB 7
FIRST DIRECT ARENA
Tuesday 19th May
After months of feverish speculation cumulating in a triumphant return performance at BBC’s
Children In Need, pop powerhouse S Club 7 confirmed their hotly-anticipated return to the music
scene with their 2015 ‘Bring It All Back’ arena tour, their first in over 10 years, visiting the first
direct arena on 19th May 2015.
Bradley McIntosh, Hannah Spearritt, Jo O’Meara, Jon Lee, Paul Cattermole, Rachel Stevens
and Tina Barrett exploded on to the pop scene in 1999 with ‘Bring It All Back’ – their instantly
infectious debut single which topped charts around the world. They followed up with hit after
hit of essential, ubiquitous chart pop – ‘Reach’, ‘Don’t Stop Movin’, ‘Never Had A Dream Come
True’ and of course ‘S Club Party’ – storming charts and leading to global sales of over 10 million
records.
With 4 multi-platinum selling albums, 2 Brit Awards, and 9 number one international hit singles to
their name, S Club 7 are household names that are once again ready to rise.

I’ve found my new favourite
place in Leeds... PINTURA! It’s
the new Basque kitchen and bar
and I’ve already been 5 times
and that’s in under a month.
Aside from the stunning décor,
and the fact the basement
houses a gin bar (which will
ultimately house over 60 types
of gin) the food is really rather
good. It’s a tapas vibe, with some
incredible options to choose
from - the cured meats and
cheese are great, the big fat
chorizo sausages were pretty
special but tiger prawns with
chilli, garlic and tons of olive oil
stole it for me! I’m yet to try
the deserts but I hear they too
are pretty special. If you’ve not
been in get it checked out... I’ll no
doubt see you there ;)
If you’ve been into Fibre over
the last few months you’ll have
noticed they’ve been having a
