A lady had a friend w h o called t o
s e e her one da7, accompanied by her
poodle. On the w a y they met an old
beggar woman, whose appearance so
annoyed the dog that it promptly bit
the mendicant, whose howU and lamentations terrified t h e Idnd-hearted
lady. "Here, my poor woman, here's
t e n shillings for you," s h e said, nerv*
ously tendering the coin.
T h e old woman grabbed It, and then
fell on her knees in the middle of the
'road and started praying for all she
w a s worth, regardless of mud or mo• tors;
— —
"And people s a y t h e lower orders
are irreligious and ungrateful," soliloquized her ladyship, w h o w a s quite
touched by the exhibition.
At last t h e supplications became
more and more vehement, and curiosity prompted the donor to inquire
what special blessings w e r e being invoked. "What are you praying for?"
said she.
Tbe old vagrant stopped and looked
at her sympathetic inquirer. "Sure,
an' I'm askin' the blessed saints t o

the other leg!" she answered.—London Tit-Bits.
