ANTRIM ROUND TOWER
Steeple Road, Antrim.
Free access all year round.
For further details contact
Old Courthouse Information Centre:
☎ 028 9442 8331
Antrim Round Tower was built
around the 10th century and is one
of the finest of its kind in Ireland. It
is 28 metres tall and was built as
part of a Monastic Settlement.
Witch’s Stone
Folklore tells of a witch who jumped
from the summit of the Round Tower
to express her dissatisfaction over
its construction. She apparently
landed on a large stone leaving in it
the impressions of her knee and
elbow. To this day the rock is
known as the ‘Witch’s stone’. It is
located next to the Round Tower.
DONEGORE MOTTE
24 Donegore Hill, Dunadry.
Free access all year round.
☎ 028 9443 2175
On a clear day, this historic preAnglo/Norman motte has views of
six Ulster counties. In earlier years,
the "Motte" was believed to have
been a Passage Grave, but around
1798 it was an important meeting
place for the United Irishmen
preparing for the ‘Battle of Antrim’.
The picturesque St John’s Church is
located close by.

HOLESTONE
Holestone Road, Parkgate.
The Holestone is located
on private farmland.
For further details contact
Old Courthouse
Information Centre:
☎ 028 9442 8331
On the crest of a hill sits a
Bronze Age standing stone
or "hole stone". It is 1.5
metres high, with a 10cm
diameter hole cut into it.
We can only speculate as
to why the Holestone was
created and its original
purpose.
The Legend of the Holestone
The Holestone is an ancient Celtic Stone that has attracted
visitors, seeking eternal love and happiness, to the Borough
since the 18th century. Upon reaching the Holestone, couples
undertake a traditional ceremony where the woman reaches
her hand through the circular hole and her partner takes it,
thus pledging themselves to love each other forever.
SPRINGFARM RATH
Located off Stiles Way, Meadows housing development, Antrim.
Free access all year round.
For further details contact Old Courthouse Information Centre:
☎ 028 9442 8331
Most raths were built between 700 and 1100 AD to house a
farming family and perhaps some livestock. This particular
rath is now an attractive landmark with mature trees on the
platform and varied plant and bird life.

CRANFIELD CHURCH AND HOLY WELL
Churchtown Point, Cranfield Road, Cranfield.
Opening Hours: Dawn To Dusk
Free access all year round.
For further details contact Old Courthouse Information
Centre:
☎ 028 9442 8331
On the shores of Lough Neagh at Churchtown Point lie the
ruins of a 13th century Church and St Olcan's Shrine. Near the
shore, a few yards east of the church, is a holy well which
produces fine spring water and amber coloured crystals.
Pilgrimages were made to Cranfield annually between May
Eve and 29 June.
The Legend of the Holy Well
The amber pebbles contained within the well are believed to
have great healing powers bestowed by St Olcan. They were
thought to protect women
during childbirth, men from
drowning and homes from fire
and burglary. In the last
century emigrants to America
believed that, if they
swallowed a pebble, they
would sail safely across the
Atlantic Ocean.
Also to this day, the healing
tradition of attaching rags to
the overhanging trees and
bushes continues. According
to the custom, one must
bathe the infected part of the
body with a rag dipped in the
well, pray and then tie the rag
to a large overhanging tree.
As the rag decays the
affliction is supposed to disappear.

Carrying a B1 Listing, the
Barbican Gate Lodge formed
the main entrance to Antrim
Castle from the town and was
built c.1818 as the final stage
in a process that began with a
major remodelling of Antrim castle in 1813. Its architectural
features of battlement and neo-Tudor twin towers framing a
great Tudor arch strongly echo the work carried out on the
Castle and are believed to be by the same architect, John
Bowden of Dublin. Having fallen into disrepair after years of
neglect, a major restoration scheme was undertaken that has
restored the building to its former glory.
RAM’S ISLAND

Ram’s Island is located
approximately one mile

Bay and Sandy Bay on the
eastern shore of Lough
Neagh.
It is nearly one mile long by a quarter of a mile wide and is the
largest island on Lough Neagh. Notable features of the island
are a round tower and the ruins of the O’Neills’ 19th century
summerhouse. Its remote wilderness and lost in time
qualities make Ram’s Island a pleasant and attractive place to
visit. A ferry service is available to take visitors to the island
and around Lough Neagh.

This historic corner of 18th century Antrim contains the
childhood home of Alexander Irvine, who became a missionary
in New York's Bowery and eventually pastor of the Church of
the Ascension on Fifth Avenue. His book "My Lady of The
Chimney Corner" recalls his boyhood years in Pogue’s Entry
and describes the lives of Irish country folk during the postfamine days.
The cottage is preserved in its original state as a tribute to Dr
Irvine and a memorial park is located at the junction of Castle
Way and Church Street, Antrim. The buzz of cottage industry
has made a welcome return to Pogue’s Entry. Visit the
resident ceramicist and watch him at work at his on-site kiln,
the only one of its kind in Ireland or perhaps take part in one
of his ceramics workshops.

Shane's Castle is the family seat of the O'Neills of Clanaboy.
The Demesne is one of the most beautiful and well maintained
in Ireland. Although the Castle has been in ruins since a fire in
1816, the remaining structure, including a unique Camellia
House, is a striking feature on the landscape.
The O'Neill Banshee
In olden times one of the O'Neills went to help McQuillan in
one of his warlike raids. On his arrival he saw a cow caught in
a thorn tree. As this tree was considered sacred by the fairies,
no one would cut a branch to release the poor animal. O'Neill
however did so and freed her. On his successful return home
he found that his daughter, Kathleen, had been carried off by
the "wee folk" to the bottom of the Lough. From then onwards
when evil threatened a member of the family, her shriek was
heard upon the shore and along the ruined walls of the castle.
Legend also blames the banshee for the fire, which destroyed
Shane’s Castle in 1816.
The Black Face of Stone
On one of the eastern walls of Shane’s Castle there is a
curious female figurehead, with a sad expression. Some say
that this figurehead was brought from the east and is much
older than the ruins among which it stands. Folklore states
that the O'Neill family will come to an end if ever it falls.

LOUGH NEAGH
Covering 383 square kilometres, Lough Neagh is the largest
freshwater lake in the British Isles and is one of the earliest
known inland sites of prehistoric man in Ireland. It is
generally shallow with an average depth, in the general body of
the Lough, of 9 metres (30 feet). The area around Lough Neagh
is one of the most important bird habitats in Western Europe.
A haven for wildlife and home to a wealth of flora and fauna,
Lough Neagh provides a unique and valuable natural resource,
offering a very productive eco-system, which supports
thousands of wildfowl and a large-scale eel fishing industry.

The Legend Of Finn McCool
The famed warrior giant, Finn McCool, was in hot pursuit of
his rival the thieving Scottish Giant. The Scottish Giant could
run faster than Finn and in a short time had almost reached
the coast. Fearing he would lose him, Finn scooped up a
mighty handful of earth and rocks and hurled it far into the sky
towards the fleeing giant. But not knowing his own strength,
he overthrew his target and the Giant Scot made his escape.
The great mass of rocks and clay flew far out into the sea
where it became the Isle of Man. In the place from where the
rocks were taken, there remained a giant hole. Gradually it
filled with water to become ………… Lough Neagh.

VISITOR ATTRACTIONS
The Legend of the Overflowing Well
A well stood in the centre of the space now occupied by the
Lough, the waters of which were supposed to possess some
wonderful charm and to be under the influence of the fairies.
An old woman, who locals believed to be a witch, looked after
the well. It was her responsibility to close the gate when
visitors left. However, one day the aged damsel forgot to do
this and the water then overflowed and followed the terrified
witch as far as Toome. There she was thrown into the water
by the local people and she forfeited her life for her lack of
care. When the overflowing ceased the Lough remained.
The Legend of the Under Water City
A long time ago the lands of Ireland were Kingdoms with many
houses, fine castles and towers. Deep within one of these
kingdoms was a magical spring of bright fresh water. The
people of this kingdom turned to greed and began to rob and
cheat their neighbours. At first the spring watched and did
nothing but then it rose up in anger and drowned the entire
kingdom. But still, on certain days, it is said that the towers of
this lost land can be seen shimmering far beneath the waves
of what became known as Lough Neagh.
Whatever its origin, Lough Neagh continues to attract
visitors from near and far.
