IMPORTANT DATES COMING UP
Wed 2nd – School Library Bus
Thurs 4th – Children’s Father’s Day Stall – helpers required from 8.45am onwards
Fri 4th – School Athletics Carnival – NO TAKEAWAY LUNCHES FROM TH SHOP
Book Week
Thank you to all of the teachers, parents and students who put such a great effort into our Book Week
activities. On Friday we saw many amazing costumes and some of the attention to detail was truly
astounding. Thank you also to all of those parents and community members who joined us for our
Friday morning book sharing. There was a beautiful atmosphere in the building as we all shared the
books that had “lit up our lives.”
Community performance
There was certainly many a laugh at last Thursday night’s community performance. The Prep to 2 students delivered a performance
high on cute factor to begin the evening. Our grade 3 to 6 students then followed up with some stunning mime performances; I have
received an enormous amount of favourable feedback on the confidence and theatricality shown by our students. After such a high
quality warmup, Circo Folklorico did not disappoint, causing many a belly laugh across the generations. It was also wonderful to see so
many members of the community who are not directly involved in our school show up on the night. We will continue our journey of
bringing performing arts to our community next term when we will be staging a performance by Valanga Khoza on October 23.
Cathy Olive Visit
Last Thursday, we were visited by one of the schools long-term friends and learning mentors, Cathy Olive. Cathy dropped in to see
how our students have been progressing with their Kids Teaching Kids project, bringing along a frozen Brush Tail Phascogale (the
topic of our students presentation) for our students to inspect and examine. Our KTK team are currently in the last stages of their
preparations, putting the final touches of polish on the presentation. We wish them all the best on their big day next Tuesday when
they deliver their presentation at the Yea Wetlands.
Athletics carnival
Due to the unfavourable weather forecast, we have postponed our athletics carnival until Friday. In doing so, I have almost certainly
ensured that Thursday will be the finest day that we have had in some weeks! Thank you to the 13 parents who have volunteered to
help out on the day; we need at least another seven parents to help us run a smooth and relatively stress-free day. If you are
interested in helping out, please return the reply slip which went home yesterday or alternatively you can leave your name at the office.
I look forward to a great day and I hope that you can be a part of it.
Fathers' Day Stall
Due to the rescheduling of our athletics carnival, the Fathers' Day stall will now be held on Thursday. Students are invited to bring up to
$5 along to buy something special for dad.
Parents and Friends Upcoming Events- Volunteers Needed
Our Parents and Friends association play a vital role in our school, driving our fundraising efforts and making countless unseen
contributions to give our school a lift. Over the coming months, there are a number of events for which we are seeking volunteers. If
you would like to be a helper at any of these events, please return the reply slip which went home yesterday.
Community survey
Thank you to the many people who have returned the community survey forms which we sent home last week. The feedback has been
very helpful in helping us to reflect on our practices. If you have not returned the survey, there is still time to do so as we have
extended the survey period for another week. We appreciate how busy everybody is but we would greatly appreciate your thoughts on
how the school has travelled over the last four years.
You Can Do It
This week’s Habits of The Mind focus on the important role that effort and deliberate practice play in learning.
Sporting Roundup – Junior Football and Netball
The students of Avenel Primary School have certainly been achieving success on the sporting field at the moment. Well done to all of
those footballers involved in the Tabilk's Under 12 side’s win over Saint Mary's on the weekend, a win which puts them through to the
Grand Final. Speaking of Grand Finals, congratulations to all those students involved in the recent netball Grand Final win by the
Avenel White netball team. Keep up the great sportsmanship.
All the best,
Neil

communities across Victoria.
Far more powerful and longer lasting than speed, ICE has
greater potential for devastating effects on individuals, families,
services and the community.
This information session is for anyone wanting to find out more
about the drug and its impacts, young people, parents,
community groups and sporting clubs.
Open community session

Community Survey
Dear Parents and Families,
As part of the review of our Avenel Primary School Strategic Plan 2012-2015, I would like to invite the
comments and views of the school community through a short anonymous survey. I would be grateful
if you could take the time to complete the short survey below. Answers need not be extensive; you
may choose to use bullet points if you wish. If you could return the survey by Friday August 28 th, it
would be much appreciated.
Kind regards,
Neil O’Sullivan
