ALCO built a total of 131 Century 420 locomotives between 1963 and 1969, when the builder ceased all new locomotive production.
Powered by a 12-cylinder, turbocharged, 2,000-hp 251-series prime mover, the C420’s direct competitor in 1963 was the
EMD GP18. In fact, EMD did not offer a 12-cylinder, 2,000-hp prime mover until the GP39 model was produced in 1969.
The shorter 12-cylinder engine block allowed the C420 to have its distinctive set-back cab and extended short hood.
The first road to purchase the C420 was the Lehigh & Hudson River, with its first two units built in 1963. The largest fleet
was purchased by the Long Island Railroad, with 30 units built between 1963 and 1968. All were equipped with a high
short hood which housed a steam generator for passenger service. Over time, the largest fleet of C420s was amassed
by the Louisville & Nashville. While only 26 units were purchased new, their total fleet grew to well over 60 units through
mergers and acquisitions. The C420 can still be found in daily service today in the US. Currently the largest fleet of C420s
is operated by the Arkansas & Missouri Railroad.
This run of Atlas C420 Locomotives feature Phase 2 versions, featuring both Low & High Nose models. Early phase 2 locomotives feature phase 1-style walkways/sills with stanchions mounted into the top walkway deck (referred to as “Phase
2a” models). Later phase 2 locomotives feature a revised configuration where the stanchions are mounted to the sides
of the sill (referred to as “Phase 2b” models). Phase 2a production ran from December 1964 through September 1965.
Phase 2b units were produced from December 1965 through the end of C420 locomotive production in August 1968.

General Electric’s “Dash 7” locomotive line was introduced as a replacement for the older “Universal-Series” of the 60s
and early 70s. “Dash 7” series improvements included increased fuel efficiency, tractive effort and reliability. The B23-7
was a direct replacement for the 2,250HP U23B model, while the B30-7 replaced the 3,000HP U30B. The first B23-7s were
produced for Conrail in September, 1977, and the first B30-7s were produced for Frisco three months later.
B23-7 production continued through 1984, with a total of 535 units built. Conrail was the largest purchaser of the model,
with a total fleet of 141 units. 199 B30-7s were produced through 1981, with the combined fleets of Southern Pacific and
Cotton Belt being the largest at 110 units.
Several features distinguished B23-7s and B30-7s from predecessor models. The long hood stepped outward in the area
of the exhaust stack to accommodate a relocated oil cooler. In addition, the frame was 2 feet longer than that of the
U23B. An FB-2 style truck was offered as standard equipment, but some railroads opted to use “trade-in” trucks. Therefore, AAR type B and Blomberg trucks could be found on some models. Six power assembly doors (located near the
center of the long hood) indicated that the B23-7 was powered by a 12-cylinder GE FDL engine. Eight power assembly
doors in the same location help to identify the B30-7, which included a 16-cylinder FDL engine.

First built for Union Pacific in the late 1980s by General Electric, the DASH 8-40C diesel locomotives were identified by
an enlarged exhaust stack and the mounting of the dynamic brake grids in a square-like unit behind the cab, which
housed an enlarged equipment blower fan. These six-axle, 4,000hp engines are still in service today in North America.
The 4,000hp Dash 8-40CW was produced by General Electric between 1989 and 1993 as a follow-up to the successful
Dash 8-40C locomotive. The most distinguishing feature of this model was the introduction of GE’s version of the widenose “North American Safety Cab.” This style of cab would become a common sight on railroads across the country.
Four major railroads purchased the Dash 8-40CW in fairly large quantities, including Conrail, CSX, Santa Fe and Union
Pacific. Most of these units are still in regular mainline and heavy-haul freight service today. Due to various mergers,
they can also be seen operating for new owners Norfolk Southern and BNSF.

The H24-66 was consider by Fairbanks-Morse to be the “The most useful locomotive ever built.” Between 1953 and 1957,
Fairbanks-Morse and the Canadian Locomotive Works built 127 “Train Masters” for a variety of railroads with the largest
quantity going to Appalachian coal hauler, the Virginian Railway. The Train Master was the most powerful locomotive
at the time, developing a whopping 2400h.p.. This versatile locomotive could be seen in both passenger and freight
duties across the US and Canada. Not to be outdone, Atlas brings to you a finely detailed engine, featuring multiple
carbody phases, wire grab irons, razor sharp printing, and more! The Atlas H24-66 would look right at home in Bay Area
“Commute” duties for SP, dragging a string of coal hoppers through the backwoods of Virginia, or hauling an ore train
across Ohio on the Pennsylvania Railroad.

4th QUARTER 2016 ARRIVAL
HO MASTER AEM-7/ALP-44 Electric Locomotive
HO
SCALE
www.atlasrr.com/HOLoco/hoaem7a.htm
To Order Online: http://shop.atlasrr.com/c-543-h81.aspx
In the mid-1970s Amtrak was looking for a suitable replacement for the famed GG1 electric locomotives which had
been in service since the mid-1930s. Domestic designs were considered, but the approved locomotive design was
presented by the Swedish firm ASEA. Assembly began in 1978 at EMD, with the original bodies produced by the Budd
Company and other components imported from Sweden. Amtrak’s original order was for 47 units which were delivered
between 1980 and 1982. This effectively removed the GG1 from regular Amtrak service. An additional seven units were
delivered to Amtrak in 1988.
Several Northeastern commuter agencies also took an interest in this model, with Maryland’s MARC and Pennsylvania’s
SEPTA each purchasing a small fleet of AEM-7s. New Jersey Transit purchased the similar ALP-44 model from ASEA Brown
Boveri in the early 90s.
NJ Transit recently retired their fleet of ALP-44s, and Amtrak’s AEM-7 fleet has been greatly reduced as new ACS-64
locomotives are placed in service. It is possible that 2016 will be the last year of operation for this once common model
on the Northeast Corridor.
Included with this production run are several “what-if” paint schemes. All schemes represent railroads that, at one time,
operated electrified passenger service over parts of their system. This includes the Reading, which could be considered
a “heritage” paint scheme for SEPTA. The Pennsylvania Railroad developed the New York City to Washington, DC portion of the busy Northeast Corridor where Amtrak’s AEM-7s currently run. Finally, the Milwaukee Road had electrified two
separate portions of their famed Pacific Coast Extension.

In 1966 EMD introduced a new line of locomotives based on the 16-cylinder 645-series prime mover. The “40-series”
included a six-axle and four-axle model, the latter being the GP40. A total of 1,145 units were produced between 1966
and 1972. These turbocharged 3,000hp locomotives were used primarily in road freight service. The GP40 was a versatile locomotive that could be found across the US hauling drag freights over mountain passes and leading high-speed
intermodal trains across flat terrain. Three rooftop radiator fans at the rear of the long hood differentiate a GP40 from
its lower horsepower counterpart, the GP38, which has two fans at this location.
Concurrent with GP40 production, EMD offered a lower horsepower, non-turbocharged locomotive based on the
same 645-series prime mover. The four-axle GP38 was rated at 2,000 hp and had the advantage of costing less than
the GP40. A total of 727 units were produced between 1966 and 1971 when the model was superseded. The wheelbase of the GP38 was identical to that of the GP40. Both units shared the same EMD road-switcher style body that was
introduced with the GP35 in 1963. A desire for standardization caused the GP38 to share the same wheelbase, frame
and many external components as the GP40. The GP38 was purchased by large and small roads alike. It was routinely
found in local and road freight service throughout the US. Many GP38s and 40s are still in service today.
Options on the Atlas GP38 and GP40 models include a long hood with or without dynamic brakes and an underframe
with 2,600 or 3,600 gallon fuel tanks.

HO MASTER S2 LOCOMOTIVE

Production of ALCO’s turbocharged, 1,000 horsepower S-2 locomotive began in April 1940. The low hood S-1 and S-2
models replaced ALCO’s unique high hood switchers of the 1930s. S-2s rode on Blunt trucks, similar to the earlier high
hood models. While only 177 high hood switchers were produced, ALCO would produce over 3,200 examples of the
S-series switcher between 1940 and 1961. Part of this success may be due to the War Production Board’s requirement
that ALCO produce only switchers during most of World War II.
The S-2, specifically was produced between April 1940 and June 1950 with 1,376 units delivered in the USA, 103 to Canada and 23 to Mexico. Due to the number produced, these units could be found in service throughout North America
on nearly every major railroad of the time period. Many would go on to work for second and third owners throughout
the 1960s and 1970s. Only a few examples of this once common model exist today on tourist railroads, shortlines and
in museums.

www.atlasrr.com/HOFreight/ho894flatcar5.htm
To Order Online: http://shop.atlasrr.com/c-418-h130.aspx
The ACF® 89’ 4” flat car was introduced in the late 60s as a result of a continuing need for more intermodal platform capacity. The Atlas model is based on the 1973 version that was originally designed to carry two trailers or combinations
with containers. The cars have been used by Trailer Train and various railroads in intermodal service since that time.
Many of these were modified in the late 80s to accept longer trailers. Most of those remaining in TTX service, today,
have been modified with three hitches to accommodate up to three shorter package trailers.
FEATURES:
• Based on ACF® plans
• Two different styles of hitch
• Container pedestals
• Correct model year jack pads

HO MASTER Pressureaide Covered Hopper

To Order Online: http://shop.atlasrr.com/c-469-h28.aspx
The ACF® Centerflow Pressureaide was designed by American Car and Foundry (ACF®) to haul a variety of dry bulk
goods, in an enclosed, safe manner. The Pressureade hopper looks similar to any other 4-bay covered hopper, but it’s
intricate piping allows for quicker unloading. Some of the smaller, dry bulk commodities it is used for are: Corn Starch,
Flour, Talc, and Kaolin Clay, just to name a few. Atlas goes the distance to recreate this unique model with its durable
body, separate grab irons, etched-metal walkways, razor sharp printing, and of course, the methodical piping system.
Take advantage of the Atlas Master Centerflow Pressureade and don’t let your bakeries get baffled again.

In late 1991, Norfolk Southern debuted the first two prototypes of its TOP GON® re-body program. Looking for a way
to expand the capacity and the longevity of its coal car fleet, this program took in old hoppers, stripped them to the
frame, and built an entirely new gondola body on top of that frame. With production starting in July of 1992, spanning
multiple classes with multiple variations, NS’ Roanoke East End

The 1937 AAR Box Car is widely recognized as the first standard freight car design to be voluntarily adopted by the majority of railroads throughout the United States. Although previous USRA designs also achieved widespread distribution,
their success was mostly due to government control rather than popular acceptance.
The 1937 AAR Box Car also had many features that became standard on boxcars for years to come, including dreadnaught ends, straight panel roof and an inside length of 40’ 6”. They had an interior height of 10’ with a 3700 cubic foot
capacity. With only a few variations built, this design helped the industry realize the economic advantages of freight
equipment standardization; a concept that continues into the modern era.

Propane or Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) is both a naturally occurring product and a by-product of the refining
process. During the 1940s, the petroleum industry began marketing LPG as a cleaner and more efficient fuel than the
existing coal and oil. Transporting LPG requires specially designed high-pressure tank cars. During the early 40s the only
ACF® tank car that qualified was the 10,500 gallon high-pressure tank car. After the war, ACF® set out to design a whole
new car for the emerging industry. As a result the 11,000 gallon tank car was introduced by ACF® in 1947. Many thousands were built up through the mid-1950s.
The Atlas model faithfully reproduces this late steam/early
diesel era tank car in two versions (with and without platform
rails). The cars with top platform rails were used where there
was no elevated loading/unloading facility. The cars without
the top platform rails were often specified for customers that
had access to elevated loading and unloading facilities.

In 1972, Berwick Forge & Fabricating, of Berwick, Pennsylvania began producing modern 50’ sliding door box cars
which featured their new corrugated non-terminating “sine-wave” ends. Initially sold to over 35 railroads across the nation, these box cars were an unfortunate casualty of the economic recession of the late 1970s and Berwick was forced
to stop production in 1982. However, Berwick’s 50’ hauler found a place in railroad history through a strong second
hand market that continues even today.
FEATURES:
• Ready-to-run
• Full under body detail with brake rigging
• Overhanging X-panel roof
• Non-terminating sine wave ends

HO MASTER 42’ Coil Steel Car
www.atlasrr.com/HOFreight/ho42coilcar4.htm
To Order Online: http://shop.atlasrr.com/c-451-h166.aspx
The increased volume of coiled steel transportation gave rise to a new purpose-built freight car. Previously rolls of
coiled-steel had generally traveled in specially equipped gondola cars. In the 1960s a lighter type of car emerged
specifically for hauling coils of steel in an integral trough. The car type gained popularity and eventually over 17,000
cars were built. Atlas’ model replicates a 42’ design with a distinctive fishbelly side sill.

• Prototypical painting and lettering
• See-through walks

HO TRAINMAN® 70 Ton 9 Panel Hopper
www.atlastrainman.com/HOFreight/tmho70tonhopper.htm
To Order Online: http://shop.atlasrr.com/c-581-ht111.aspx
This familiar hopper was an industry standard on many railroads since the 1930s. It was adopted by the AAR as a recommended design, but fell out of favor by the mid-1950s. While
offering greater capacity over cars with conventional flat
sides, the original open hoppers created corrosive interaction
between acidic coal and the car’s joints, leading to costly rebuilding programs.
FEATURES:
• True scale dimensions with accurate details
• Weighted, detailed underframes
• Equipped with AccuMate® Knuckle Couplers
• Trucks equipped with free-rolling metal wheels
• Accurate painting and lettering
• Removable coal loads

ALP-45DP Locomotive
The ALP-45DP is a “dual mode” locomotive, capable of drawing power from either overhead electrical wires or its own
pair of 12-cylinder Caterpillar diesel engines. These flexible locomotives were designed to provide a one-seat commute
from NJ TRANSIT’s various diesel-only lines into the electrified territory that leads to New York City’s Penn Station. This
fulfills the requirement of not operating diesels through the North River Tunnels and within the subterranean Penn Station
complex. Produced by Bombardier Transportation in Kassel, Germany, the first ALP-45DP locomotive entered service
on NJ TRANSIT on May 30, 2012.
NJ TRANSIT’s 35 ALP-45DP locomotives are commonly seen on commuter trains traversing the Morristown Line, Montclair-Boonton Line, Raritan Valley Line, and North Jersey Coast Line. These lines do not have overhead electrical wires
for their entire length, necessitating a change of power source somewhere en route. Previously, locomotives or entire
trainsets would have to be changed, inconveniencing riders. The ALP-45DP alleviates this need, performing the switch
from diesel to electric power (or vice versa) in just under two minutes during a routine station stop.

Multi-Level Cab Car
Concurrent with its purchase of ALP-45DP locomotives, NJ TRANSIT also purchased 62 multi-level cab cars from Bombardier Transportation. These cab cars are used on the opposite end of the train from the ALP-45DP locomotive to
facilitate “push-pull” operations, where the engineer in the cab car can control the locomotive pushing from the other
end of the train. A cab car provides an engineer with all of the same controls as a locomotive cab, allowing the train
to reverse direction without turning around. Cab cars also include all standard locomotive safety features, such as a
horn and bell.
The multi-levels’ fixed 2-2 seating arrangement provides ample legroom and maximizes passenger comfort while increasing capacity. All of NJ TRANSIT’s cab cars also include toilets. NJ TRANSIT’s multi-level cab cars have a capacity of
127 commuters (approximately 17% more than its single-level counterpart, the Comet V). These cars routinely operate
over most routes on both the Hoboken and Newark Divisions of NJ TRANSIT, carrying more than 300,000 commuters daily
to and from destinations all over New Jersey and into New York’s busy Penn Station.
