7th Annual Oktoberfest
Over one hundred volunteers
met under the Sunnyside arch on
Saturday October 5th. They meant
to make a difference in the neighborhood. They did.
In three hours they polished
the streetscape and helped insure a
bright spring in 2014. Sunnyside
Shines and Council Member
Jimmy Van Bramer’s office provided experienced management,
guidance and support. They united
with Greening Western Queens,
Trees New York and the New York
Restoration Project to employ three
local girl scout and brownie troops,
a contingent of students from NYU
and a medley of neighborhood
denizens to green up the heart of
the neighborhood.
The organizations outfitted
people with weeders, trowels, compost, mulch and daffodils. The people
split into self-assigned teams. First
went the rakers, then the cultivators,
composters, planters and mulchers.
Sweepers and baggers followed up
everywhere. A lone tree trimmer—
trained in the detailed art of removing damaged and dead twiggery—
wielded his long-poled saw like a
knight brandishing his lance.

With good weather, a neighborhood came together to celebrate the seventh annual
Oktoberfest, Arts and Crafts Fair,
with Pumpkin Patch, at Sunnyside
Gardens Park on Saturday October 5th. There was something for
everyone in the neighborhood.
Lisa Jacobsen, the president of
the Sunnyside Gardens Park said
“ We have a variety of activities
taking place all within the confines of the park.” Over 20 local
artists sold their wares and were
organized by Samantha Hogan
and Jenn Busnel. Local musicians
provided live performances including Richard Younger, “Super Cools” from Sunnyside
AHRC, “Bad Poets”-a Brooklyn
duo, “Little Fiddlers” from
Sunnyside String School along
with “There They Go” a group
organized by Alex Hegyi , a
Woodside resident. Children’s activities were numerous with face
painting by Laura Senicea, crown
making, sand art and pumpkin
painting. All-in-One Entertainment
provided pony rides, a 20 foot high
giant slide and a 28 foot high climbing wall. The pumpkin patch was
bursting with 1000 pumpkins. As
in years past the picnic area transformed into a classic german beer
garden with bratwurst and
sauerkraut to black forest cake and
flowing beer truck from Budweiser.

On the evening of Saturday
September 28th Sunnyside Community Services on 39th Street was
transformed back in time as the
Kiwanis Club of Sunnyside and
Sunnyside Community Services
(SCS) co-sponsored an “Oldies
Night” complete with pasta supper.
The fundraiser, the proceeds of
which will be used to help fund the
programs of the Kiwanis Club and
Sunnyside Community Services,
was attended by a mixed aged crowd
of approximately sixty very enthusiastic and energetic “oldies lovers” who showed their best moves
to tunes covering the decades of the
50’s, 60’s and 70’s. The musical
group Tony K. and Boardwalk kept
the crowd excited and engaged as
they played songs from musicians
as varied as the Beach Boys to
Frank Sinatra and you can believe
the group did it “Their Way,” which
of course they ended the night with.

At the request of Senator
Michael Gianaris, the Department
of Transportation approved a street
resurfacing project at Hazen Street
and Ditmars Boulevard. Astoria
residents reached out to Senator
Gianaris to express concern regarding the lack of safety at this
location due to poor pavement conditions, and he pushed DOT to
address the problem.
Local residents are concerned
about surface conditions at this
location in particular because of
the high volume of foot and car
traffic. Seniors worry they could
trip and fall and drivers have expressed concern about difficulty
approaching the Grand Central
Parkway, which is one block away.

wary of damaging their cars due to
poorly paved roads,” said Senator
Gianaris. “I am glad the DOT listened to our community and is
taking steps to remedy this problem as quickly as possible.”
Senator Gianaris has a long
history of working to improve
transportation safety and making it easier for Queens residents to travel around our neighborhoods. This summer he requested DOT make traffic safety
improvements in Dutch Kills,
and in the past he successfully
advocated for safety improvements and traffic pattern redesigns in Queens Plaza. He will

Yoga, once practiced by a few,
continues to receive a lot of press.
Why has this form of exercise,
which has survived thousands of
years, become so popular today?
Let’s face it. If something has
survived this long, there must be a
good reason.....especially since everything changes so rapidly nowadays and the pace of the world is
almost impossible to keep up with.
Perhaps, this is precisely the
reason why yoga has become so
popular! We need something to
slow down our internal pace, our
mental chatter and self-talk, and
release our reactive tense muscles.
Focused stretching and coordinated
deep breathing helps the body to
SLOW DOWN naturally.
How does this happen? Hatha
Yoga is a series of exercises designed to stretch and strengthen
the body. Yoga provides greater
freedom of movement and relieves
mental and physical stress. The
yoga postures or asanas stretch the
muscles, tendons, ligaments,
glands and internal organs. The
asanas also relax and calm the central nervous system. Along with
proper coordinated breathing, the
internal organs can release deeply
held tension.
I have taught yoga classes at St.
Sebastians for about 16 years! The
classes are designed for older adults
and for anyone seeking a gentle,
softer approach to classical hatha
yoga. Postures are modified so all

Richard Italiano Corner Unveiled

corner of 102nd Street and Strong Avenue to former Community Board 4 District Manager,

Street and Strong Avenue in Corona conaming the corner for Richard Italiano, a
former Community Board 4 district manager and Corona community activist.
“Richard Italiano was a beloved member of the Corona community,” said
Dromm. “His contributions to the neighborhood range from serving as the district
manager of Community Board 4 for more
than seven years, on the Community Emergency Response Team, the Flushing Meadows Corona Park Conservancy, the New
York Hospital-Queens Community Advisory Council, the 110th Precinct Community Council and the Italian Heritage and
Culture Committee of Queens County.
With a voice he never raised, Richard
accomplished big milestones for the community he loved so dearly. He is sorely
missed by all.”

Neighborhood Shine’s Up Sunnyside Sidewalks
From one tree and its inelegantly
named home in the concrete—its pit—to
the next they spread out. On Greenpoint
Avenue, Queens Boulevard and 46th
Street they got on their knees to transform
the earth. Depressions in the sidewalks—
usually strewn with the plastic bottles
and caps, paper cups, chewed gum and
cigarette butts city dwellers leave in their
wake—became tidy open patches. When
the work was done the mulched, enriched
earth lay ready and able to nurture the 90
hard-working street trees and 2,400 newly
planted daffodils.
“This was such an exciting collabora-

tion between so many great local organizations, and a great first step to care for
Sunnyside street trees. A cleaner and
greener commercial district is better for
local businesses and we look forward to
more events like these to bring the community together,” said Sunnyside Shine’s
director Rachel Thieme.
Looking around at the biggest cleanup
in the four years he has sponsored them,
Van Bramer said, “It never ceases to
inspire me that we have so many good
people in this neighborhood.”
It seems their work transforms more
than just the sidewalks.

Division of Kiwanis, congratulates Kiwanis Club of Sunnyside
President Carol Masiello on another wonderful event as he
encouraged the Club to do bigger and better things for the youth
in the community.
These ladies knew not only all the moves but all the words as
well as they danced a storm during “Oldies Night”. Well

October 8th enjoyed a 3rd return
visit from Seth Bornstein, who is
in his fourth year as Executive
Director of QEDC. Seth explained
how he ‘enjoys the job and the
people he gets to meet. His office
helps to create and retain jobs,
working with over 1,000 people
per year and helping to operate a
number of programs.’

7th Annual Oktoberfest
This festival is Sunnyside Gardens largest fundraiser during the year. The funds are used to
help maintain the park and to keep low membership fees so that any family can become
members. “None of this could have happened without park members volunteering, donating
goods and using their talents.” Said Debra McGowan, Chairperson of the Oktoberfest. “They
do it all for the love they have for this very special park.”
