I also want to thank our Past Exalter Rulers, Lodge Officers, Trustees and volunteers whose good works have given us a lodge that is one of the brightest stars in all of Elkdom. Traditionally, the new Exalted Ruler has appeared on the cover of the April Aloha Elk. This year, I asked all lodge officials to join me in a group photo. I requested that this be done to remind us that our continued success depends upon our combined efforts as we work together for the good of our lodge. The spirit of cooperation and working together begins with the Chair Officers that you elected to serve this year. Andy Watson (Leading Knight), George Del Barrio (Loyal Knight) and Charlie Stack (Lecturing Knight) have joined me in determining that our major focus for 2015 - 2016 will be to increase our service to our community through the performance of good deeds and charitable works. Throughout the year, you will hear of the various events and activities LODGE COMMITTEE CHAIRS for 2014-2015 Americanism........................................ Guy Hicks that the Chair Officers will be promoting, and we invite you to join us and support these events to ensure their success. This same spirit will be evident in the work that will be performed by the Board of Directors. Along with the Chair Officers, Trustees Deb Knight, Judy Rubano, John Nadler, Byron Apo and Augie Rey Fernandez will continue to perform the duties that will properly manage the lodge’s facilities and assets. As always, they will receive support from our Lodge Secretary, Keith Williams, and his administrative staff. Also, let us not forget the Committee Chairs. Committee Chairs are members who devote countless hours of their time to champion activities, from Americanism to Youth Paddling. We are blessed to have these Committee Chairs and the committee members who serve with them to support these activities. Finally, we must remember to come together to celebrate and enjoy the good things in life. The House Committee, along with Club Manager Ben Dowling and Chef Robert Goya, continually strive to create a pleasant experience for you every time you visit your lodge. As Exalted Ruler, in the spirit of cooperation and working together, I encourage all of you to support our charities and events so that we may remain true to the core values of all Elks: Brotherly Love, Justice, Charity and Fidelity. Fraternally yours, Hiram K. Keliipio PGER VISIT On Saturday, March 14, PGER Millard Pickering (who was our Grand ER/National President in 2013-14) and his First Lady Susanne, visited our Lodge and enjoyed a wonderful dinner and casual visit. Our own Club Manager, Mr Ben Dowling, prepared a special treat of “Cherries Jubilee” to the delight of all. The Pickerings returned to our Lodge on Tuesday, March 17, to enjoy our St. Patrick’s Day event. Susanne commented to me that this is the best St Patrick’s Day event they have ever seen. Bobbe and I really enjoyed their company and shared the special beauty of our Lodge. They promised to return again and again. Mahalo to all who helped make their stay special. Aloha, Augie Rey 3 STATUS OF CONSTRUCTION PROJECTS AND THE MASTER PLAN Every year your Board of Directors plans and budgets for Capital Improvements (CI) which includes building and property improvements, equipment replacement and upgrades, and major renovation projects for the current and coming fiscal years. This is a report on the status of CI projects from FY 15, some of which started in prior years, and what can be expected over the next few fiscal periods. Updates will be posted to the Lodge website at elkslodge616.org FY 16 projects, some continuing from FY 15: •• •• •• •• •• •• •• •• •• •• Lounge sliding door replacement: Doors on order – approx install date Oct 2015; Solar shades lounge/dining room following sliding door replacement; Swim step: In fabrication - approx install date April 2015; Kitchen exhaust system improvements: ongoing Elevator replacement: evaluating bid proposals, approx install date Jan/Feb 2016. Topographical survey of property: just completed; Engineering study for electrical upgrade: contract issued; Electrical upgrade via HECO will follow the engineering study. Time frame depends on HECO – maybe October 2015. Paint building exterior: no start date yet; Plan, purchase, install key card system: no start date yet. Master Plan FY 16: The proposal for the architectural design contract is in hand. Contract award awaits receipt of the Grand Lodge permit, the application for which has begun. The previous architectural contract addressed floor plans for layout, function, access, and flow. A Design Advisory Group participated in review of those plans and contributed their comments and advice. We are now moving into the design phase which will address such matters as ceiling treatment, flooring, kitchen organization, etc. and will include cost estimates. There will be an opportunity for the Lodge to review the plans and weigh in on the various aspects of the design. When the design plans are completed, we will seek competitive bids and begin awarding construction contracts. This Master Plan pre-construction process is time-consuming and depending on time taken up by discussion and feedback, permitting delays, and other matters, may take up most of the year. For the Board of Directors, Judy Rubano, 3Year Trustee March 9, 2015 Exalted Ruler Awardees for 2014-2015 Elk of the Year: Guy Larson-Hicks – Youth Paddling Chair Guy Larson-Hicks has done an incredible job of recruiting, training and making Paddling so much fun for our Youth Paddling kids. He started the year with 3 kids and now has over 30. Just this week they signed up over 30 more kids. Our Youth Paddling Kids are having fun and making our Lodge proud. Citizen of the Year: Senator Brickwood Galuteria – State Senator Waikiki Senator Brickwood Galuteria represents our own District 12 Waikiki. I have known Brickwood for over 40 years as an entertainer and radio personality. His venture into politics has allowed us all to benefit from his ability to bring people together to work out difficult and complex issues, and he was recognized by his colleagues when they chose him to serve as their Majority Leader for the past four years. Outstanding Service Award: Bobbe Joy Fernandez – Public Relations Chair Bobbe Joy Fernandez has been a do-all, be-all, dedicated volunteer. In mid-year she took on the role of Public Relations Chair. All the decorations in our Lodge all year were done by her and her team of volunteers. Wherever there was a need, Bobbe did it. She was one I could always count on to do any task for the good of the Lodge. She is my (MVP) “Most Valuable Person of the year”. Outstanding Service Award: George del Barrio – Lecturing Knight George del Barrio, our Lecturing Knight, has been a pillar of volunteering energy. He has been an MC for several events. An expert in IT needs , he continues to dedicate his time and energy to increase the facility of our Lodge in Social Media. Elks Living Treasure: Edna Huapala Ellis – Na Kupuna Chair Edna Huapala Ellis is our Living Treasure and Chair of the Kupuna Committee. From the early start as a talk-story group of Kupuna to a full-fledged committee of dedicated Kupuna, Edna was the Kupuna group leader. She has become a huge Lodge asset. Augie Rey Fernandez, PER PROPOSAL TO APPLY FOR A GRAND LODGE PERMIT For Architectural Design Services The Board of Directors proposes to apply for a Grand Lodge Permit in accordance with Grand Lodge Statutes Section16.050 for services relating to architectural design in accordance with the Lodge’s Master Plan. A written proposal was read on the Lodge floor March 10, 2015, at least two weeks but not more than eight weeks prior to the scheduled vote of the Lodge on the proposal setting forth the following: Purpose of project. Architectural design services for capital improvements relating to our Master Plan. Amount to be expended for each purpose: up to $550,000 for capital improvement design services.
