EXALTED RULER’S
MESSAGE
Aloha my Brothers and Sisters,
I thank you for bestowing upon me the
honor of serving as your Exalted Ruler. I
also want to thank our Past Exalter Rulers,
Lodge Officers, Trustees and volunteers
whose good works have given us a lodge
that is one of the brightest stars in all of
Elkdom.
Traditionally, the new Exalted Ruler has
appeared on the cover of the April Aloha
Elk. This year, I asked all lodge officials to
join me in a group photo. I requested that
this be done to remind us that our continued
success depends upon our combined efforts
as we work together for the good of our
lodge.
The spirit of cooperation and working
together begins with the Chair Officers that
you elected to serve this year. Andy Watson
(Leading Knight), George Del Barrio (Loyal
Knight) and Charlie Stack (Lecturing
Knight) have joined me in determining that
our major focus for 2015 - 2016 will be
to increase our service to our community
through the performance of good deeds and
charitable works. Throughout the year, you
will hear of the various events and activities

that the Chair Officers will be promoting,
and we invite you to join us and support
these events to ensure their success.
This same spirit will be evident in the
work that will be performed by the Board
of Directors. Along with the Chair Officers,
Trustees Deb Knight, Judy Rubano,
John Nadler, Byron Apo and Augie Rey
Fernandez will continue to perform the
duties that will properly manage the lodge’s
facilities and assets. As always, they will
receive support from our Lodge Secretary,
Keith Williams, and his administrative staff.
Also, let us not forget the Committee
Chairs. Committee Chairs are members
who devote countless hours of their time
to champion activities, from Americanism
to Youth Paddling. We are blessed to have
these Committee Chairs and the committee
members who serve with them to support
these activities.
Finally, we must remember to come
together to celebrate and enjoy the good
things in life. The House Committee, along
with Club Manager Ben Dowling and Chef
Robert Goya, continually strive to create a
pleasant experience for you every time you
visit your lodge.
As Exalted Ruler, in the spirit of
cooperation and working together, I
encourage all of you to support our charities
and events so that we may remain true to
the core values of all Elks: Brotherly Love,
Justice, Charity and Fidelity.
Fraternally yours,
Hiram K. Keliipio
PGER VISIT
On Saturday, March 14, PGER Millard
Pickering (who was our Grand ER/National
President in 2013-14) and his First Lady
Susanne, visited our Lodge and enjoyed a
wonderful dinner and casual visit. Our own
Club Manager, Mr Ben Dowling, prepared
a special treat of “Cherries Jubilee” to the
delight of all.
The Pickerings returned to our Lodge
on Tuesday, March 17, to enjoy our St.
Patrick’s Day event. Susanne commented
to me that this is the best St Patrick’s Day
event they have ever seen. Bobbe and I
really enjoyed their company and shared the
special beauty of our Lodge.
They promised to return again and again.
Mahalo to all who helped make their stay
special.
Aloha, Augie Rey

STATUS OF
CONSTRUCTION
PROJECTS AND THE
MASTER PLAN
Every year your Board of Directors plans
and budgets for Capital Improvements
(CI) which includes building and property
improvements, equipment replacement and
upgrades, and major renovation projects for
the current and coming fiscal years. This is
a report on the status of CI projects from
FY 15, some of which started in prior years,
and what can be expected over the next few
fiscal periods. Updates will be posted to the
Lodge website at elkslodge616.org

Master Plan FY 16:
The proposal for the architectural design
contract is in hand. Contract award awaits
receipt of the Grand Lodge permit, the
application for which has begun. The
previous architectural contract addressed
floor plans for layout, function, access, and
flow. A Design Advisory Group participated
in review of those plans and contributed
their comments and advice. We are now
moving into the design phase which will
address such matters as ceiling treatment,
flooring, kitchen organization, etc. and
will include cost estimates. There will be
an opportunity for the Lodge to review the
plans and weigh in on the various aspects
of the design. When the design plans are
completed, we will seek competitive bids
and begin awarding construction contracts.
This Master Plan pre-construction process
is time-consuming and depending on time
taken up by discussion and feedback,
permitting delays, and other matters, may
take up most of the year.
For the Board of Directors,
Judy Rubano, 3Year Trustee

Palace and the Mission
Houses, a visit to the US
Army Museum in Waikiki
and luncheon at the Hale
Koa Hotel, special holiday
luncheons at the Club,

to all members and friends,
guest speakers, community
service activities, and
