EXALTED RULER’S
MESSAGE
ALOHA from the
EXALTED RULER,
Happy Birthday,
USA! With the explosion of colorful fireworks lighting the sky
and the many celebrations on the 4th of
July, we are reminded
how lucky we are to live in these United
States. We can be proud to live in the
greatest country on earth. Along with that we
can also be proud to be members of the
Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks,
who certainly make us the Best People On
Earth!
I, along with several others of our officers,
just returned from the California Hawaii
Elks Association Convention in Anaheim.
While there, we attended various business
meetings and workshops that give us the
necessary tools and guidance to manage the
Lodge. This is also the time when our State
officers are elected and installed. This year’s
CHEA president is Richard “Dick”
McDonald from Pittsburgh, California,
Lodge #1474. State Vice President is PER
Barbara Nance from Kona Lodge #2616.

Dick’s priorities for this year focus on five
areas: Americanism, Lodge Activities, Major
Project, Membership and National Veterans’
Service Programs. Our Lodge has strong
committees in all these areas and I am
excited as we progress through the year to
address these important goals.
The convention concluded with the
presentation of the CHEA Major Project
theme child and the Exalted Rulers March.
The theme child for 2013-14 is 2-year-old
Andrew Bowring of Red Bluff, California.
Diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy, he has made
rapid progress and continues to improve with
the help of the physical therapists provided
by the Elks. This was then followed by the
Exalted Rulers March where the ER from
each Lodge marches across the stage and
announces their Lodge’s contribution for the
year to the Major Project. No one could have
been more proud and privileged than I to be
able to announce that Honolulu Lodge, with a
per capita of nearly $40, contributed
$118,610. For that, I, or I should say YOU,
got a standing ovation. Our Lodge had the
largest donation of all the Lodges in
California and Hawaii. Thank you all so
much for your generosity!
But now is not the time to sit back and
relax. In August, Augie Rey will be putting
on “Member Appreciation Day” and the
ever-popular “Opportunity Drawing”. When
you get your letter and tickets in the mail,
please send back your donation. Although
this is strictly voluntary and no purchase is
necessary, let’s keep Honolulu Lodge on top.
We can do even better than last year. Every
little bit helps our children to walk, talk, see
and play.
In July I will be attending the Grand Lodge
Convention in Reno, Nevada. One question
that will come up and be voted upon is
whether the club can remain open during a
Lodge meeting. Currently the club is closed
during Lodge meetings. The proposal would
be to change this to allowing the club to stay
open, but the bar must remain closed. I would
welcome your feedback on this as I will have
to vote on it.
Finally, I hope you all have a joyous 4th of
July and a safe and relaxing summer.

BOARD BULLETIN
BOARD OF DIRECTORS
MASTER PLAN
The Master Plan development process
continues on schedule. From receipt of eight
proposals, the selection process has been
reduced to two finalists. For a provided fee
the two finalists will be tasked with
providing renderings of their vision, guided
by member input, of two aspects of the
renovations, (1) the dining room/lounge area
and (2) the front of the building, to include a
new extension along the entry and features to
enhance overall appearance.
Renderings will be posted in the lobby
entrance for a 30-day period with member
preference ballots provided at the front desk.
Once selected and subject to the Grand
Lodge permit approval process, more
detailed discussion with the architect will
commence on the various areas to be
addressed with subsequent contractor bidding
and selection. The entire process, for all
areas, taken sequentially, will span
approximately three years.
FACILITIES MANAGER
After lengthy study and discussion of (1),
member input regarding daily janitorial and
maintenance servicing, (2), growing concern
regarding adherence to regulatory health and
safety compliance and (3), continuity of asset
preservation, the Board of Directors has
decided on the establishment of a new, much
needed, management position, that of
Facilities Manager. An encompassing job
description has been developed. Reporting
to the Board, the new position will be
responsible for all facilities maintenance/
repair, both daily routines and recommendations for long term asset preservation or
replacement. Daily janitorial servicing will
report to the position. Responsibility will
include supervision of in-house staff as well
as oversight of outside vendors. Support of
the Lodge Safety Program will be a key
functional responsibility. Another very key
aspect of the job will be providing logistical
support and coordination to the other
functions of the Lodge—Administrative
Staff, Club and Committees. An
independent employment agency has been
retained for the search with the selection
process reduced to two finalists who are
going through final interviews. It is targeted
to have the position filled within the month.
The overall objective of the job is to provide
enjoyable and safe experiences for the
membership while instilling and maintaining
a sense of pride for all——- staff and
membership.

DRUG AWARENESS
PROGRAM 2013
The Elks National Drug Awareness
Program continues to support all Elks Lodges
to get involved in their communities to fight
the use and abuse of illegal drugs by all
members of society and believe in order to
ensure a bright future for our country, it is
essential that our children be raised in a
drug-free environment. Parents, you are the
first line of defense when it comes to your
child’s future. YOU make the difference!
Here are some tips for parents . . .
1. Set Rules. Let your child know alcohol
and drug use is unacceptable in your family.
Enforce stated consequences when family
rules are broken.
2. Know where your teens are and what
they will be doing during unsupervised time.
3. Talk to your teen. Casually ask how
things are going at school, with friends, and
about plans for the future.
4. Keep your teens busy, especially
between 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. and into the
evening hours. Teens who are involved in
constructive, adult supervised activities are
less likely to use drugs than other teens.
5. Take time to learn the facts about
marijuana and underage drinking and talk to
your teen about the harmful effects on young
people.
Many of you have already taken the steps
to educate your teens and pre-teens about
drug abuse, and yes, education starts at home.
The committee is looking for more
volunteers for the program. Please feel free to
contact me at [email protected] or
leave me a note with the front desk.

HOUSE COMMITTEE
REPORT
Well, summer is already upon us. How
time flies. I just want to update our members
as to what your House Committee has been
working on.
Phyliss Horner has temporarily replaced
Mark Sutterfield as a member of the House
Committee while Mark is on vacation all
summer in Canada. Phyliss was one of the
two advisors named by ER Bud Lush to the
House Committee. The second advisor is
Penny Sweeney.
After a solicitation for applications and an
interview process, the House Committee has
hired Robert Goya as the new Chef/Kitchen
Manager. A graduate of the Kapiolani
College’s Culinary Arts Programs, he has
worked at several establishments here in the
food industry including Paradise Cruises and
Indigo Restaurant. We feel confident that
Robert will provide the leadership, direction
and stability for our food service, so that we
can provide a good and consistent dining
experience for our members. Committee
members Phyliss Horner and Lynda Jacques
really did a lot of work on the solicitation and
interview process, along with members Peter
Dietrich and Fred Martinez.
We hope you are planning to spend the 4th
of July with us at the Club. Your committee,
management staff and employees hope to
make it an enjoyable day for you, your family
and guests. Come down early and enjoy
breakfast in the restaurant and lounge area.
Service will be at the usual breakfast hours.
Later on there will be plate lunches available
out by the pool area. Augie Rey, Chairman of
our Veterans Committee, will be handing out
a free Haagen Daz ice cream cup to anyone
who purchases a plate lunch, while supplies
last! There will be drink specials offered
from the bar. Just a reminder, we want all of
those enjoying themselves to remember to
drink responsibly. Entertainment will also be
provided.
Just a reminder to our members and guests
who enjoy the swimming pool this summer.
Please familiarize yourself with the posted
“Pool Rules.” They are there for everyone’s
safety.
Regarding entertainment, the Club will
commence to provide entertainment on
Sundays during the “sunset hours.” So for
those enjoying the pool during the day, come
on in and enjoy the music to end your day.
Wish you all a happy summer!
Fraternally!

MANAGER’S
SPOTLIGHT
Aloha Members,
By now most of you are aware that we
have a new chef here at the club. Chef Robert
Goya came on board here on June 8. He has
been active in the culinary world since 1990
and brings more than twenty years of
experience. His formal training was at
KCC and progressed through four local
establishments. Most recent positions were at
Indigo and Paradise Cruises. We are happy to
have him on board.
4th of July schedule:
We will be serving breakfast on July 4
from 7:30 a.m. until 11:00 a.m.
Barbecue poolside will start at 11:00 a.m.,
until 6:00 p.m.
Full lounge menu will start at 11:30 a.m.
Dinner service in the dining room from
5:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m.

COMMUNITY FOOD
DRIVE REPORT
Aloha Elk members and thank all of you so
much for your generous contribution to our
“If I CAN, You CAN” Food Drive Project
these last two months and a good turnout at
our packing party on June 29. We hit the
goal of 800 lbs. and will be delivering the
boxes of packed can and dry goods to Mayor
Wright Housing. You are welcome to come
along for the drop off. Watch for future
announcement.
To our precious volunteers who helped
pack boxes, and to our musical groups for
keeping us in tune while being entertained as
we pack the goods, thank you so very much.
To our bidders for the mystery auction, thank
you for making it fun. Monies made will
help purchase a little bit more to feed our
families.
A nice young couple told me years ago
when I started doing the food drive for Elks,
“People need to eat every day.”, so, I hope
what all of us raised will extend in the hearts
and minds of each family we helped feed.
Fraternally yours,
Pi’ilani Kealakai,
Community Chairperson
AMERICANISM
Aloha Honolulu Elks,
July of course, is an important month for
Americans. We are all familiar with the
signing of the Declaration of Independence
and the birth of our nation in 1776. However,
it was not until
October 1781 with the
British surrender to
General Washington
at Yorktown that
independence was
won. It is a time much
like Thanksgiving,
Memorial Day, and
Veterans Day to
reflect on the spirit
and sacrifices of those
who went before us and to rightfully
celebrate the results of their achievements . . .
results we all enjoy.
The drafting of the declaration was
assigned by congress in June 1776 to the
famous “Committee of Five”. All were
northerners except for one Virginian,
Thomas Jefferson. Jefferson wrote a few
drafts and consulted his bitter rival, John
Adams for the final draft. In 1826, Adams
and Jefferson, now both former presidents,
both former political
enemies, died on July 4th.
This seemed to usher in,
what was seen by the
young country at the time,
an “Era of Good Feelings”.
As we all enjoy a great
Independence Day celebration in these somewhat
tumultuous times, perhaps
we can all reflect on what
it took to build this
country, imperfections and all, and what its
citizens can do to carry on the spirit of ‘76.

Americanism Chair

MEMORIAL
DAY at Elks
Lodge 616,
May 27, 2013
Memorial Day is a
United States federal
holiday which occurs
every year on the final
Monday of May.
Memorial Day is a day
of remembering the
men and women who
died while serving in the United States
Armed Forces. Formerly known as
Decoration Day, it originated after the
American Civil War to commemorate the
Union and Confederate soldiers who died in
the Civil War. By the 20th century, Memorial
Day had been extended to honor all
Americans who have died while in the
military service. It typically marks the start of
the summer
vacation
season, while
Labor Day
marks its end.
Many
people visit
cemeteries
and memorials, particularly to honor
those who have died in military service.
Memorial Day is not to be confused with
Veterans Day.
Memorial Day is a day of remembering the
men and women who died while serving,
while Veterans Day celebrates the service of
all U.S. military veterans. Exalted Ruler
Arthur “Bud” Lush placed a wreath in
memory of the men & women who gave their
lives to protect the flag and our freedom. He
was accompanied by the Elks Lodge Officers
and The Boy Scouts of America, troop 616.
We come, not to mourn our dead soldiers,
but to praise them. The 21 Gun Salute and
Taps was performed by the Troops from Fort
Shafter, thanks to Lt Col Matt Goodman,
Elks member and Americanism Committee
Chair.
The Star Spangled Banner was sung by
Augie Rey (Leading Knight)
Hawaii Pono’i was sung by Andy Watson
(Lecturing Knight) Augie Rey & Eddie
Kamai (above) joined in the patriotic
ceremony. ER Bud Lush: After moving
remarks of why we celebrate Memorial Day,
led all in the Pledge of Allegiance. Everyone
joined in singing “God Bless America” in
closing. The lodge then provided
Watermelon pieces to all in attendance.
