About us
We design and manufacture furniture and play equipment in the UK for
primary schools and early years settings. Together with visionary educators,
we have been creating beautiful learning environments for over 65 years.
Designed for children
The way that children play influences
our designs. Each item is designed to
support open-ended play, making sure
a child’s imagination is never limited by
what they play with. The environment
children play in has a great effect on
them. Our furniture is modular and
adaptable, enabling the environment
to be changed and developed. Calm,
protected areas allow children to
concentrate on their play. Children who
have ample opportunities for play go
on to become eager learners.
Creating environments
We offer a complete, end-to-end
solution that creates a perfect learning
environment. From our free room
layout service to installation, we
can save you time. Our free training
resources will help you maximise the
benefit of your investment. Whether
you’re updating an activity corner or
designing a new school, you can call
0800 387 457 and talk it over with us.
Value for money
Community Playthings products
never last less than ten years, and
still look beautiful even then. Budget
furniture mostly lasts less than four
years, and can look terrible after
just a few months. But product
replacement costs are not the whole
picture. Hidden cost such as a poor
Ofsted rating and unimpressed
parents leading to unfilled places
have far greater economic impact.
Who we are
Anyone who visits our workshops
soon understands why Community
Playthings products are different.
They are designed, made and sold
by a community of people that have
been caring for children since 1920.
Over 65 years ago we started selling
toys and furniture that reflect our
care and love for children. Believing
that children thrive on imaginative
and open-ended play, the first
products sold were wooden blocks
– the same shape and size we still
make today!
”Some of the products
purchased by this nursery
in the 1970s are still in
use today. Now that is
value for money!”
Liz Rook Eastwood Nursery School
Children come first
From the sales office to the
workshop floor, everyone at
Community Playthings cares about
children. That includes spending
time with them, having fun, and
observing how they learn.
Harpenden Nursery Community Playthings’ room layout team collaborated with Harpenden
Nursery to create learning areas in this log cabin classroom. The furniture is adaptable and the
staff rearrange the room frequently to follow the children’s interests.

Using Roomscapes
1. Choosing shelves
Consider the kinds of storage needed
for the activities in each area. This will
determine shelving amount as well as
type. Shelves double as boundaries
and display when they are away from
the wall and can face either direction.
Space between shelves can be filled
with panels.
2. What height of shelving?
41 cm shelves are nice within an area
for babies. 61 cm shelves provide
a good counter surface for most
children, and 81 cm shelves maximise
storage space and can bound cosy
areas. You may prefer a tall height
around a quiet area or near the wall,
coming lower within the room.
6. Stability

straight line, use 2 posts and a filler.
Panels
• No more than two panels in a
straight line. (Options: create 45º
or 90º angles, add a shelf, or use
wings, p68)
• If panels are stacked on shelves
or other panels to create a higher
divide, combined height must not
exceed post height.
Gate, Teacher arch and door
• Must be connected at both ends to
a shelf or panel at least 61 cm high.
• P osts must be at least 81 cm high.
• If 61 or 81 cm high corner units
are connected to the Gate, Teacher
arch or door, then the corner units
must be connected to other
panels or shelving.

both ends.
4. How do Roomscapes connect?
No tools are
needed. Connectors
on the end of each
shelf or panel slide
into grooves on
the posts, allowing
you to position your panels or shelves
at various angles. Posts are 6 cm wide
and should be reckoned into the total
measurement. Choose post height to
match that of the neighbouring shelf,
panel, or stacked combination. (When
connecting two heights, posts must
match the taller height.)

Where do you eat out?
When you eat out, do you choose
the exposed table in the path of
traffic? No, you look for a protected
spot. Children are no different. In
a protected space, they can relax,
communicate and play.

A place to concentrate
Children are born scientists who
instinctively want to learn about
the world they live in. Discovery
is serious business that requires
full attention. Create a protected
space where a child can pursue
her interests in peace.

Communication is key
Communication and language
skills are key to children’s success
in school and in life, so the
classroom environment should
provoke communication. Who
can resist conversing with friends

Environment reflects ethos. Just

and individuals are unique, so

staff love their work.

Play is a child’s work
Combining the right physical
environment with simple props
will inspire imaginative role play,
which children take seriously.
Two centuries ago Friedrich
Froebel emphasised that children
do not differentiate between
work and play.

from distraction and their
towers from being bumped.

Three in one
These movable shelves serve
three functions: they provide
child-accessible storage, they
can divide the classroom into
areas – which is why their backs
are attractive – and they afford
both horizontal and vertical
display surfaces.
Corner and Sweep shelving
Sweep shelves add elegance to any room, and Corner shelves complete a run of Roomscapes
with an aesthetic touch. Their curves soften the building’s straight lines and right angles.

A corner for everyone
Supporting an array of activities
within one room can be
challenging. Panels help by
separating cosy areas from active
ones. Some panels have a fuzzy
surface and can be fitted with
mirror covers, others are clear
Perspex or warm bamboo.
Curved panels
Children naturally gravitate to curves, which are more
welcoming than hard corners and right angles.

An inviting place to snuggle

impression and is friendly to the

out to stroke wood. (Have you
ever seen anyone stroke plastic

Why adjust table height?
Children come in different
sizes. Some activities require
sitting and others standing up.
A slightly slanted table may
give fuller control to a child with
special needs, but does not look
“different” from other tables.

Imagination thrives when
children have access to openended materials like cardboard

Blocks

Unit blocks
Modular blocks teach mathematical ideas of
length, fractions and geometry. They also support
knowledge and understanding of the world as
children create miniature environments. Architect
Frank Lloyd Wright attributed his success to an
early love of block play.
Blocks also support literacy, which starts with
representational learning. On top of all this learning
potential, blocks are jolly good fun!
Are your blocks accessible?
Open shelves are the best way to store blocks,
because they can be sorted according to size
and shape. It’s also important for children
to be independent both in accessing and
packing away the blocks.
Shelving should be used to create
boundaries around the area so
children can work undisturbed.

Mini unit blocks
Mini unit blocks are perfect for a toddler’s small hands and ideal for schoolage tabletop play. Mini unit blocks are exactly half the size of our well-known

Window into a child’s world
Child-initiated play provides
opportunities for staff to step
back and observe. We learn so
much about each child as we
watch and listen, because play
opens a window into children’s
perceptions of life.
Drama centre
Role play, dramatic play, imaginative play – everyone agrees it’s
essential. It starts with a dress-up unit with lots of storage space.
Click the arches into the Dress-up unit, toss a Flowie over them,
and you have an instant stage or cosy space.

PlayFrame
The PlayFrame’s versatility means children never tire of it, as with a
fixed structure. Children use it to re-enact important experiences
and play at imaginary characters. Exercise happens naturally as they
stretch, climb, swing, jump and slide. Moving the platforms turns
yesterday’s barn into a home with bunk beds.

Like you, we care about the world we are raising children in and leaving to
them. Here are some of the certifications and initiatives we subscribe to.
Care for the environment Craftsmanship
Wood is a renewable resource. We make sure more trees
are planted than are cut down. Our products are certified to
the globally recognised forest management schemes shown
below. Please call us if you have questions about certification
details for a particular product.
Two third-party accreditations, ISO 14001 (Environmental
Management Systems) and FISP (Furniture Industry
Sustainability Programme), mean we meet or exceed all
environmental requirements and are committed to continuous
improvement. For example, we re-use or recycle all cardboard,
stretch film and wood packaging from our suppliers.
Made in the UK
Our products are designed and made at our workshops
in Kent and East Sussex. You always have direct access
to the company who made your items, so there will never
be the excuse that a mistake was made by some far-away
manufacturer. Considerable stocks of raw materials are held
at our logistics facility in Kent, meaning that interruption of
supply is extremely rare. This enables us to respond within
hours to large or urgent orders.
We use a blend of traditional craftsmanship and modern
process control. Each part is inspected and assembled by
hand, and the final product is inspected twice before it is
packed. This stringent quality control means customers rarely
find fault with our products. Our Quality Management System
is certified to ISO 9001:2008.
Real wood is at the core
of our designs. Wood
is natural and looks
beautiful, creating a
relaxing, home-like
environment. Wood is
also extremely durable.
Rate your setting
If you’ve ever wanted to evaluate the quality of your early
years setting, the ITERS and ECERS rating scales are for you.
ITERS (Infant/Toddler Environmental Rating Scale) and ECERS
(Early Childhood Environmental Rating Scale) utilise a broad
range of research-based, developmentally appropriate criteria
to guide practice. The scales are used for self-assessment by
staff and by Local Authorities to determine areas for targeted
improvement funding.
Both scales measure the quality of the overall care and
learning environment. For more information and the UK
Addendum to the ECERS-R go to: www.ecersuk.org

we aim to foster both the craft and the industry of furniture
making in the United Kingdom.

Care
Community Playthings products are worth caring for. We recommend a regular
programme of maintenance. Refer to the specific product guide for maintenance
suggestions. Replacement parts are available through customer service, often at no cost.
Unfinished wood: Unit blocks are natural,
unvarnished wood. If they become soiled, you
can wash them, but remember, wood and
water are natural enemies. Don’t soak; work
quickly. Use a stiff brush with washing-up
liquid and water. Let the blocks dry thoroughly before next
playtime.
Preserved wood: Hard outdoor use may
roughen your H
 ollow blocks. To renew
them, sand with fine sandpaper. Follow
manufacturer’s instructions; apply a coating
of good quality boiled linseed oil. Let it
penetrate the wood for an hour, then wipe off any excess oil
with a clean soft rag. Repeat in 24 hours.
Finished wood: The clear finish used on
Community P laythings is guaranteed safe for
children. To refinish, lightly sand the entire
surface. Any remaining finish need not be
removed. Then, following the manufacturer’s
instructions, apply one or two coats of childsafe varnish, using
a brand you trust.
Carpet cleaning: Our carpets are made of
stain-resistant nylon fibre. Vacuum carpets
frequently. To wash, lift any corner of the
carpet to take it off, shampoo it with carpet
cleaner, then replace the carpet when it is dry
(on some products, partial disassembly is required for proper
re-installation). For stubborn stains, refer to your product guide.
Disinfecting: A solution of household cleaning agent
is commonly recommended for use as a disinfectant. We
have tested this and found that it will not harm Community
Playthings products. All products should be rinsed with plain
water and dried after any cleaning agent is used.

Free training resources
Respect for childhood underpins our free training resources.
We offer a range of booklets and DVDs for staff development.
In addition we offer PowerPoint presentations
and trainer’s notes for those training others. We
hope these tools will support and inspire anyone
privileged to work with young children.
Actually it’s no secret that Community Playthings products
last a lot longer than ten years. This truck is at least 50 years
old and still rolling. How do we know? In 1964 we changed
our logo, and so the logo you see branded on the side of the
truck means it was made before then. We found this truck in
a nursery where the children still use it daily.
