Mayor’s Welcome
Welcome to scenic Haldimand County, located
in Ontario’s Southwest, where the waters of the
southern Grand River meet Lake Erie.
We are a premier cycling and motorcycling
destination with scenic views and flat paved rural
roads that are less travelled, compared to our
urban neighbours.
With 87 kilometres of Lake Erie waterfront and the the Grand
River, a designated heritage river running through the municipality,
Haldimand County offers numerous water adventures including:
fishing, waterside camping, kayaking, boating and swimming.
We have an abundance of cycling and hiking trails ranging in
difficulty and distance. The scenic waterfront trail runs along
Lake Erie’s coast featuring beautiful countryside and picturesque
lake views.
Haldimand has many towns and hamlets for you to explore, each
having their own unique attractions, quaint shops, cultural and
historic sites, accommodations and restaurants.
Why fight traffic? We are only a short drive from major urban centres
in southern Ontario. Many visitors are discovering the hidden gem
that is Haldimand County and our friendly small town charm keeps
tourists coming back year after year.
Visit Haldimand County and see for yourself why we are the perfect
undiscovered vacation destination in your own backyard.
Sincerely,
Mayor Ken Hewitt, Haldimand County

nine-span bridge, the only one of its type in Canada, links the
whole community. Incorporated in 1853, Caledonia’s historic sites
include the old Town Hall, known as Edinburgh Square Heritage
and Cultural Centre which preserves and profiles the history of the
community and the 100-year old Grand Trunk Railway Station, built
in 1908. The renovated Railway Station, open five days a week,
operates as a museum, office of the Caledonia Regional Chamber
of Commerce and Travel Information Centre. Caledonia’s parks and
green spaces provide a place to enjoy a range of activities: fishing,
walking, picnicking and bird watching. The Caledonia Kinsmen
Park is a great family escape with a pool and splash-pad, and
Riverwalk to the downtown. The Rotary Riverside Trail is a beautiful
6km off road trail along the Heritage Grand River. Notable events
include the Caledonia Canada Day Celebrations and the Caledonia
Fair which takes places on the 4th weekend after Labour Day.
Located downtown and along the river, the Caledonia Fair has been
delighting attendees for over 140 years.

Caledonia and Dunnville. The town of Cayuga offers unique
shopping and dining opportunities, access to the Grand River,
beautiful parks and many events for the whole family. While visiting
Cayuga, be sure to enjoy a picnic in the pavilion next to the river
or take a relaxing stroll along the river’s edge. Boaters can launch
from the public boat ramp on the river located in Bob Baigent Park
beside the bridge. Located on the edge of town, the 1,500 acre
Ruthven Park National Historic Site is a must visit with abundant
natural beauty and historic coach house and Mansion. Ruthven Park

Dunnville
Dunnville is a charming community located along the Grand
River on Highway #3, between the Niagara and Hamilton regions,
and less than an hour away from the U.S. border. The revitalized
downtown offers many unique shops and dining experiences.
Tuesdays and Saturdays are Farmers Market days. The Grand
River and nearby Port Maitland on Lake Erie offer a host of water
activities including kayaking, paddle boarding, canoeing and
features prime locations for fishing.
Nearby Dunnville are Rock Point Provincial Park and Byng
Conservations Areas, which are popular waterfront destinations
for campers. In June Dunnville hosts the annual Mudcat Festival,
held to celebrate one of the Grand River’s most well-known
inhabitants. The festival includes a parade, strongman contests,
midway, fireworks and more. Another popular event is the Dunnville
Agricultural Fair, held in late August, which includes heavy, light and
miniature horse shows, sheep and goat shows, midway and much
more. Dunnville is also the home of the Annual Dunnville Grand Tour
cycling event in August.

oriented town. The heart of the community is the Hagersville
Farmers’ Market founded in 1892. The market runs regularly on
Wednesday mornings April – October. The local urban community is
surrounded by prime agriculture land, creating an abundant supply
of fruits, vegetables, flowers and even baked goods at the market.

the Walpole region. They hold many events and open houses to
view their collection and learn about the area’s agricultural heritage.

Exploring on
Two-Wheels
Whether your travelling the north shore of Lake Erie, following along
the Grand River or riding through agricultural communities into quiet
countryside, Haldimand County offers cyclists numerous appealing
on-road cycling routes and off-road trails. For those same reasons
Haldimand is also a great destination for motorcyclists. Pick up a
copy of the Hiking and Cycling Map or the Cruise the Coast Map for
the most scenic routes in Haldimand County.
Birding
Haldimand County is a
popular destination for bird
watching enthusiasts.
The ecological significance
of our Carolinian Life Zone
attracts botanists, naturalists,
and conservationists.
The Carolinian habitats and ecosystems include forests, tallgrass
prairies and savannas, wetlands, streams, shorelines and other
aquatic habitats.
Canada’s Carolinian zone has a greater number of both flora and
fauna species than any other ecosystem in Canada and with close
to 400 bird species being recorded, it represents over half of the
species in all of Canada. This makes Haldimand County the perfect
destination for your birding adventure.
The most popular times to see the birds are in May (spring
migration) and late August and September (fall migration).

Camping
Agricultural
Food & Flavours
We are home to two Provincial Parks (Rock Point & Selkirk), two
Conservation Areas (Byng Island & Haldimand), and more than a
dozen privately owned campgrounds, resorts and trailer parks.
Whether you want to rent a trailer on-site, bring your own tent or
trailer, or stay in the luxury of a hotel style bed in a prospectors tent,
Haldimand County can accommodate your plans for an outdoor
adventure. See page 38 for a full listing of campgrounds.
Haldimand County has deep agricultural roots. Farms ranging from
livestock production to traditional crops and produce can be found
throughout the county. In any season, there is an abundance of
opportunities to enjoy local, fresh and flavourful foods!
With so much available, many restaurants within our borders have
sought local producers to supply them with meats, cheeses, produce
and spirits for their establishments. Businesses with a Harvests of
Haldimand sign are ones that use locally grown or produced goods.
Our Harvests of Haldimand Local Food Guide is a great directory
for those wishing to explore our local food attractions, farm fresh
producers, specialty stores, garden centres and more.
Haldimand is also home to three seasonal Farmers’ Markets in
Hagersville, Caledonia, and Dunnville. Come rain or shine, vendors
set up their various fresh fruits, vegetables, meats, maple syrup,
honey and specialty products for your culinary pleasure. Haldimand
County Farmers’ Markets supply the freshest tastes and best quality
that we have to offer—it’s the next best thing to harvesting yourself!

Along the South Coast of Ontario are many
distinctive B&B’s offering great hospitality. Come
relax and visit a number of exceptional wineries,
lavender and market gardening farms and many
artisan and craft studios.
Judging by exposed fossils embedded in limestone shelves along the beach,
this peninsula was a coral reef 350 million years ago. A platform above the sand
dunes offers the best view of Lake Erie, migrating birds and monarch butterflies.
Today the Carolinian forests here are home to opossum, Canada’s only marsupial.
